LONDON BOROUGH OF SUTTON SEEKING PARENT VOLUNTEERSWould you like to volunteer to become a Member of Sutton’s Admission Forum? The London Borough of Sutton is looking for Parents and Local Community representatives with an interest in school admissions to volunteer to become Members of its Admission Forum.

The Admission Forum is a statutory group and provides a vehicle for admission authorities and other key interested parties to discuss the ef-fectiveness of local admission arrangements, consider how to deal with di!cult admission issues and advise admission authorities on ways in which their arrangements can be improved. Its main focus is to consider the fairness of admission arrangements in their local context.

Sutton’s Admission Forum usually meets three times a year at Civic O!ces in Sutton and meetings normally last for two hours. Members comprise of representatives from Schools (Governors and Headteach-ers), the Local Authority, Parents, the Local Community and the Catholic and Church of England Diocesan Bodies.

Parent RepresentativeIn order to be considered as a parent representative, you must not cur-rently be a governor at a Sutton maintained school and you must be resident in the London Borough of Sutton and be the parent of a child who:a) has attained the age of two and is receiving primary education, orb) is of compulsory school age (Years 1-11)

Local Authority RepresentativeIn order to be considered as a Local Community representative you must not currently be a governor at a Sutton maintained school or qualify as a parent representative. Applicants under this category will be asked to set out the groups within the local community that they feel able to represent, what quali"es them to represent them and how they might represent them in the context of school admissions.

Application FormsApplication forms must be received by 1 October 2010. For more infor-mation or to request an application form please telephone Claire Potier, Head of Admissions, on 020 8770 6080 or email [email protected]

Can you help with the above? If so, please do consider applying. There are signi"cant political moves afoot in Sutton to bring about a change in the pattern of places allocated in the Grammar Schools, which if suc-cessful would certainly change the character of the schools over time. It is important that there are parental voices from the Grammar Schools in the Admissions Forum to ensure that the Grammar School voice is heard clearly. If you are interested in applying and would like to discuss this with the Head, please drop him a line at [email protected] D M Charnock, Head

JUNIOR ENSEMBLESStudents in Year 7 (and other lower school years) are reminded that there are several musical ensembles available to them! Boys interested in the Junior Choir or Ju-nior Strings should speak to Mr Lissimore as soon as possible, while those interest-ed in Junior Orchestra should approach Ms Bright in the Music Department.

LOST PROPERTYA reminder to parents that we are only able to return lost property to students if their names are in the items that they lose. Please do remind your sons to put their names on any items of clothing and equipment that they bring in to school. If they have lost something please remind them to check the lost property area (which is currently bulging at the seams) at lunchtimes. This is located by the side of the school office.

CONGRATULATIONSCongratulations to the following boys on their recent music examination results. Jeremy Wong ( 11S ), passed grade 4 Alto Saxophone; Joshnu Seelan (10C) passed with merit his grade 3 Alto Saxophone; Maksymilian Tobiasiewicz (U69) passed his grade 6 singing with distinction; Rowan Brearley (U61) passed his grade 6 singing with distinction; and Priyank Shah passed his grade 4 singing with distinction. Well done to all of them.

CHESS AT WILSON’SWilson’s hosted the Russell Inter-school Chess Jamboree on Friday 10th September. Eight schools took part with each team having eight players. In the first round Wilson’s scored a per-fect 8/8 against a mixture of all the schools. However, in the tougher second round, when playing in a group of the leading four schools, we only scored 3.5/8. Our total of 11.5 was only just enough to win, ahead of Hampton with 10.5, Whitgift with 9.5 and Sutton Grammar with 8.5. This is the first time in fifteen years that any school has successfully defended the Russell trophy, and hopefully bodes well for our first team’s defence of the Surrey League.

With more chess teams (five) than any other secondary school in Surrey, there is the opportunity for many pupils to represent the school at chess. Any boy who would like to can come along to chess club which meets on Monday, Wednesday and Thurs-day lunchtimes in Room F12. We already have over 50 mem-bers but there is always room for more - last year over 100 boys came to chess club! It is not easy to get into even the fifth team, but do let Dr Cooper know if you are interested.

We are looking forward to meeting our new Year 7 parents socially this evening. Copies of the black and white photo-graphs on display will be available briefly for download from the school web-site.

Academy StatusMany thanks to all those parents who attended the meeting concerning Academy status last Tuesday. We had a good turn out and a stimulating discussion. The views, questions and concerns raised by parents at the meeting were reported back to Gover-nors at their meeting yesterday evening. The Governors had a very lengthy discussion of the full and complex range of issues that we need to think about. They have now passed a resolution to move to the next stage which will be to make an application for Academy status. We will now start a detailed process of due diligence and formal written consultation with staff, parents, lo-cal authority and schools. The Head will be writing shortly to all parents with further details. The school will not adopt Academy status unless and until it signs a formal funding agreement with the Secretary of State and the school can pull out of the process at any time until them.

ErratumThere was an error in the information about examination re-sults given in last week’s newsletter. William Gunnell, Ashok Menon, Michael Moneke, Alexander Nash, Kushal Patel, Kenny Pydiah and Yash Shukla obtained 9A* grades plus two short courses at A* ( not 9A* grades as stated).

£4079.05 RAISED FOR ST RAPHAEL’S HOSPICE Last June, Lower Sixth students from Wilson’s and Wallington Girls participated in a two day joint Management Event one of the aims of which was to raise money for charity. In teams students, aided by a business advisor, had to come up with a project and business plan to raise money for the hospice and were given a week to put the plan into action. The amount raised was fan-tastic. Students were inspired by the cause and approached their tasks with humour and very high levels of enthusiam. The Wilson’s 7 a side 2010 competition was once again a huge success. Nine schools and eighteen teams competed in both the Y7 and Y8 age groups. There was a great atmosphere with the focus upon scoring goals as the top two teams with the most goals went on to play in the semi-finals and then the final.

The Y7s came fourth and the Y8s came second losing to Riddlesdown in the final, after beating last year’s champions, Carshalton, in the semi-final 1-0.

A massive thank you to all the boys, staff and leaders involved for helping with the organisation, refereeing, refreshments, collation of results, first aid, coaching and setting up.

Objection to the admission arrangements of Sutton Grammar School for Boys, Wallington County Grammar School and Wilson’s School Case references ADA/001770, ADA/001771 & ADA/001772

Dear Parents/Carers, Sta and Governors

We have received an objection to the admission arrangements of Sutton Grammar School for Boys, Wallington County Grammar School and Wilson’s School for September 2011.

The adjudicator appointed to determine this case is Mrs Janet Mokades. She has decided to hold a public meeting at 6.30pm on Wednesday 6 October 2010 at The Civic O ces (meeting room 1) St Nicholas Way, Sutton SM1 1EA, to enable all those who wish to present their views to do so. She is particu-larly keen to hear the views of parents.

Meanwhile, if you would like to submit any written comments, please send these to: Mrs Lisa Short O ce of the Schools Adjudicator Mowden Hall Darlington DL3 9BG Email: [email protected]

If you require further information please call 01325 735617. Yours faithfully Mrs Lisa ShortCase Manager

NJDC DEBATING COMPETITIONMany congratulations to George Driscoll, Harry Gower, Conrad Je eries and Will Ries, who as the Y11 team made a successful debut at the NJDC, a national tournament run by the same administration as the Cambridge debate but in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. After coming through three very competitive rounds, Wilson’s missed making the nal four out of sixty teams by only two points. It is a tribute to the hard work put in by our students that, with no prior experi-ence of the British Parliamentary style, they individually placed within the top quart .

ENTRANCE EXAMINATION This year, for probably the rst time since the school was re-opened in 1883 (and possibly for the rst time since its foundation in 1615), the school’s Entrance Examination was held in September. With over 1500 candidates, the organisation required was extensive and as ever the sta and students of Wil-son’s rose to the challenge with aplomb. Special thanks must go to the Year 9 & 10 boys who acted as friendly guides within the building and of course the CCF who masterminded the external operation!

The school was tremendously grateful to have the expertassistance of Police Sgt John Withersby and his team who helped minimise disruption to the local com-munity by monitoring the roads around the school. We must also acknowledge the support of the Surrey Health & Racquets Club (ESPORTA) who kindly pro-vided us with access to their car park in order to keep tra c owing on Hannibal Way.

We wish all the candidates the best of luck.

HOUSES TO SPONSOR CHILDREN VIA ACTIONAID

Last term the 6th formers were asked to consider each House sponsoring a Child via Actionaid. This would mean that every member of the house would need to contribute £1 each school year for a minimum of ve years. The Houses would be able to write to their sponsored child and receive correspond-ence and photos from them too. As a sponsor you can help end poverty for the child, their family and others in the com-munity thus giving poorer people the chance to work their way out of poverty and improve their living conditions.

We are proud to say that 3 of the houses decided to sponsor a child and they will each be receiving 180 points for their house.

For more information you can visit the Actionaid website.http://www.actionaid.org.uk/

If you would like to nd out more information about the children being sponsored do keep an eye on the House noticeboards which is where the information will be placed.

Meet Relebohile Molia from Lesotho who is being spon-sored by Camberwell House.

Meet Boaz Mahiri who is being sponsored by Green-coat House.

Meet Mukeshimana who is being sponsored by Southwark House.

U6 PARENTS’ EVENING - REMINDERA reminder that U6 students are expected to make the necessary appointments for them-selves and their parents to see any staff that they wish to discuss their progress with. If they have not already done this then they need to do so very soon. Ms Nye would be grateful if parents could confirm their attendance with Mrs Kitchin in the sixth form office.

MUSIC NEWSThere has been a lively start to the year in the Music Department, with rehearsals already well underway for the Charity Orchestral Concert (Wednesday, 1 December) and several other events towards the end of term. The new Wind Band has swelled to around 30 students, while the Senior and Junior Orchestras are building on their progress from last year; we are already planning another formal collaboration with WHSG in the Spring Term in which we hope to perform Prokofiev’s ‘Peter and the Wolf ’ as well as a large choral work. Over a dozen other ensembles rehearse regularly throughout the week, and there is truly an opportunity for every student (instrumentalist or not); please contact the Music Department for more details. There are a wide range of further possible experiences for GCSE and A level musicians – last week’s concert visit to see the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Christopher Warren-Green (pictured below) started our season of external concert visits.

Congratulations to our Jack Petchey Award winners who received their Jack Petchey medal from the Mayor of Sutton at an award ceremony last week. The ceremony which involved 19 schools from across the borough, celebrated the positive contribution made by young people in schools and acknowledged the range and diversity of those individual achievements.

Hans Woyda Inter-School Maths Competition

Wilson’s convincingly beat Whitgift School 57 to 33 in the first round of the Hans Woyda Inter-School Maths competition. The team comprised of Alex McMillan (U6), Daniel Hunt (L6), Keith Barker (11S) and Philip Knott (9B). All team members did well to answer all their starter questions correctly as well as the Geometry questions, a feat rarely achieved by the team. Well done to all who took part.

MUSIC INSTRUMENT STORAGEWhere possible, instruments should be stored in lockers in the link corridor; padlocks can be obtained from Mr Lissimore or Ms Bright. Only larger instruments should be stored in the cupboard at the end of the Music Department corridor.

British Physics OlympiadAn amazing 18 boys (from upper and lower sixth) have met the criteria to take Paper 2 of the British Physics Olympiad 2010 and 4 boys achieved Merit level scores. This is an unprecedented success in the Olympiad’s first round – hopefully it signifies a great Wilson’s performance in the tougher sections of this well respected national competition. This performance provides a strik-ing demonstration of the high quality of candidates we have taking Physics at Key Stage 5, and gives us an early insight into the exam successes we can expect of our boys later in the year. Well done to everyone involved

PUBLIC MEETING WITH THE SCHOOLS’ ADJUDICATOR

Many thanks to those who either attended the public meeting with the Adjudicator at Sutton Civic Offices yesterday or who have already contacted the Adjudicator’s office with their views.

The public meeting was certainly a lively affair but firmly handled by the Adjudicator. The issue at the heart of the Adjudication is whether parents in Sutton should have an advantage over those applying from outside Sutton and whether it has become too difficult for boys from poorer areas and homes to apply to the school. The objector, sup-ported by the local counsellor Kirstie Jerome, who chairs the Admis-sions Forum, and one of the LA officers, wished to see a lowering of the pass mark and the application of a distance criterion . This would mean that the standards required to gain access to the school would be lower and that places would go first to boys who, having passed the test, lived closest to the school. Alternatively, the introduction of a catchment area focussed on Sutton but including limited access from outside the Borough was suggested.

The School’s view, which was articulated by the Head at the meeting, is that the school has to be open on an equal and fair basis to applicants both within and outside the borough. We fully accept the principle of the Code of Practice that the school must serve the local area but hold strongly that the school’s physical location at the boundaries between Sutton and Croydon means that its ‘local area’ must include the areas surrounding Sutton, particularly to the East, North East and South. It is a fact that 86% of the school’s population come from an area notion-ally delineated by a circle with a radius of five miles. Five miles is the distance from Wilson’s to the furthest boundary of Sutton in Worcester Park. If it is fair, as it must be, that a boy from Worcester Park should be able to apply then it must be fair that a boy five miles to the East should also be able to apply and be treated equally. We need also to recognise that the key issue is not distance but the length of time it takes to get to school.

We believe strongly in rank order allocation of places. If you accept the premise upon which grammar schools are based, it is simply contrary to natural justice that a boy who comes 150th in the rank order should displace the boy who comes first just because he lives half a mile from the school rather than five miles away, even though they can both get to the school in a very reasonable amount of time.

As a school, we are completely committed to our role in enabling social mobility to the disadvantaged sections of our society. Although the number of pupils in the school with free school meals entitlement is low, according to the an important measure of social deprivation used by Ofsted and based on the IDACI index, the school has been successful in recruiting significant numbers of boys from deprived areas and that number is rising. We are now very close to the average for the Borough. We’d like to see it rise further. One thing that bothers us is that we seem to be more successful in recruiting these boys from outside the Borough rather than within it. The boys’ Grammar Heads have resolved to have another go at tackling this issue together. We know from many informal contacts that the issue is not one of inaccessibility ( it stands to reason and is a matter of fact that boys from poor families can and do reach the appropriate standard - level 5a and 5b in the SATs) but a matter of perception, parental aspiration and peer pressure on boys to go to the same school as their mates.

Of course, it is an interesting question just how selective a selective school should be. At the moment about 16% of Sutton boys get selec-tive places (including the selective places at Greenshaw High School). We think that is about right unless we were to seriously affect the balance between the Grammar Schools and Comprehensive schools in Sutton. We have no desire at all to make the comprehensives into Secondary Moderns which is what would happen if the objection were to succeed. If it did it would be an unmitigated catastrophe for those who don’t want a Grammar School education - and many don’t. Many just want a coeducational school and it is only the comprehensives that provide that.

What happens now? The adjudicator has allowed one further week for written representations to be made. If you feel strongly one way or the other then use your right to make your voice heard. One of the problems yesterday was that the meeting was dominated by Sutton parents. If you want the Grammar Schools to continue to be available on an equal basis to those living outside the borough, then let your voice be heard. Email [email protected].

The adjudicator has powers to uphold the objection in full, in part, with modifications or to lay it aside altogether. Her judgement will affect this year’s applicants.

The adjudication will be available before the closing date for the submission of the Common Application Form on October 31st. The adjudicator has promised to make her determina-tion as soon as possible. Parents who are applying for this year and who are anxious about the implications for their son can therefore afford to wait and see before submitting their CAF.

Y7 ENTERPRISE SKILLS DAY - 22 OCTOBEROn Friday 22 October Y7 will be taking part in an enterprise skills activity day. Two entrepreneurs will join us to share their experience and help judge the skills, presentation and design ideas. Mr Haggett, an old boy of the school, whose business is www.honeyslug.com, will be setting a 21st century challenge to design a new com-puter game. Mrs Wood of Pampered Chef will brief the boys on how to present their product idea for the inter house competition. Could each boy please bring in one magazine or Sunday supplement on the day. Any questions please email Mr Jones via the school office.

JANUARY 2011 - EXAM RETAKESSixth form students who have requested a re-sit in January 2011 need to give cheques to Mr Harmsworth in the School Admin Office by 10.00 a.m. Monday 18 October. Failure to do so will result in the candidate not being entered for the exam or having to pay double. The charge for each unit is £21. All units can be paid for with one cheque. On the back of the cheque should be listed the student’s name, candidate number and the unit code of the retake.

MOBILE PHONES IN LESSONSParents should be aware that from half term the following policy will be applied to mobile phone use.1. Students taking mobile phones out during lessons can expect to have them confiscated and handed to their Year Manager.2. On the first occasion a Year Manager receives a student’s phone following confiscation he will return it to the student at the end of that day.3. On all subsequent occasions that a Year Man-ager receives the student’s phone following con-fiscation it will be available for collection by the student’s parents at the end of that school day.

For the first time the school is running the DofE Gold Award. It is aimed at L6 students who have completed Bronze and Silver or those who have joined the school in the Sixth Form. Participants will enjoy many new experiences, discover talents they never thought they had, challenge themselves and the fact that achieving an award will give them skills, confidence and a view on life that everyone is looking for, from employ-ers to colleges and universities. There will be recognition for doing things they want to do (and may even be doing already). They will make a difference to other people’s lives and their community, be fitter and healthier, make new friends and have memories to last them a lifetime. The boys who sign up to the award will spend 12 months on a Volunteering project, 12 months on either a Physical or Skills project and six months on the other (they decide which way round they do it). The big difference at Gold is they will also do a Residential section - staying away from home for five days and four nights completing a shared activity with people they don’t know. If the participant has begun with the Gold DofE programme they will need to do a further six months either volunteering or on one of the physical or skills activities they spent the most time on.For further information please contact either Mr Beggs or Mr Jones at the

school.

Wilson’s Launches DofE Gold Award!

Our congratulations once again go to Will and Tom Johnson for their performances in the British Judo Championships last weekend. Will won the Under 60 kilos Cadet Championship against the best from England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland (31 boys had qualified via regional heats) winning every fight. Tom competed in the U55 kilos category. Having reached the last four in a group of twenty nine, he lost his semi-final contest on judges’ flags. His opponent was the reigning British Champion. Tom then went on to beat the Welsh champion for the Bronze medal.

Both Will and Tom retain their places on the England Squad and will be in-vited for an assessment to establish whether they stay on the England Talent Squad.

As national representatives for their sport, their names will be inscribed on the school’s Honours Board.

British Judo Championships

Bronze DofE

This week was the first practical exercise for the boys – after a lecture on equipment and safety whilst camping – they were all challenged to see if they could put up a tent. D of E supervisors were on hand if needed – but as the objective was to build up team sprit, the teams were very much left to themselves. Those who communicated and read instructions finished early – those who did not were there quite a while…..

School’s AdjudicatorMany thanks to the many parents who have written in support of the school’s position outlined in last week’s newsletter concerning the present adjudication on our Admissions Criteria. It really is much appreciated.

The match was split into six 6 board matches, the top four of which were league matches. Wil-son’s therefore could not field their second team as Trinity do not have a team in that league. The individual match results were:

Wilson’s staff show their support for the Combined Cadet Force (CCF)Over the past two Tuesday lunchtimes school staff members have visited the CCF to undergo a familiarisa-tion range session with the No. 8 target rifles. In addition Major Burton, Contingent Commander gave them a tour of the CCF buildings and a valuable insight into what the cadets do at CCF. Both sessions were well attended with high praise from all involved. The staff proved more than average shots with everyone managing to hit the target! Special mention goes to Mr ‘Crackshot’ Walters who managed to gain an extremely impressive grouping with his 10 shots. Although he did fail to mention he was a Sutton Grammar cadet during his school years! Thank you again to everyone who attended these events. The support for the CCF is greatly appreciated.

RUGBY REPORT Year 11/12 Friendly: Wilson’s School 12 – 12 Raynes ParkAn even game throughout with both teams defending exceptionally. Adam Drew scored in the corner after some good build up play and Tom Carnegie scored late on after being camped on the Raynes Park line for 10 minutes. Matt Taylor scored the conversion from out near the touch line via a drop kick, which sailed through the middle of the post, seconds before the final whistle. Superb performance by all involved, especially Peter At-kinson and Henry Kyriacou who carried a lot of ball and gained ground on every attempt.Year 9 Friendly: Wilson’s School 27 – 24 GraveneyAn excellent performance by Wilson’s, who were playing a Graveney side made up of Year 9s and 10s. The backs were sublime with Jake Field scoring 2 tries on debut. Marcus Christie and Jordan Smith were also on top of their game, scoring 4 tries between them. Pack leader Harry Rogers led from the front, followed by ever present Aaron Mallet and Ahmed “the Ark” Elgharably, who took the game to Graveney and made sure that every ruck, maul, scrum and lineout was won. A very promising start to a long hard season.Year 10 Friendly : Wilson’s School 45 – 0 GraveneyA very one sided affair against a tired and lacklustre-Graveney side. The forwards were strong and set up a lot of good ball for the backs, making it easy for the likes of Rob Webster and Chris Mallet to score underneath the posts. Special mention must go to Karim Abu-Seer and Samir Dewan who scored their first tries for Wilson’s. Harder games to follow this season but a good game for confidence.Year 7 Croydon, Sutton, Merton and Wandsworth League: Wilson’s School 40 – 35 CheamThe Year 7s had their first game for the school, with a team containing 3 boys who had played the game before. After being 15-25 down at half time, the boys battled to earn a well earned victory! Notable perfor-mances being Amartyadeep Pal, scoring 3 tries and Man of the Match, Tom Hudson with 2 tries and countable try saving tackles!

News of Wilson’s Old Boy, Denis JamesOld Boy Denis James, who was colour sergeant in the Wilson’s CCF, is now a Major in the Royal Dragoon Guards. He is at the moment the Squadron Leader of the Green Horse, a part of the Viking Group, in Helmand, Afghanistan. His squadron’s task is to defend a road which the coalition forces are trying to build to help develop the local economy. The troops are encouraged not to give details of precisely what they do or where they are but, according to Denis’ parents, they seem to spend much of their time fighting on foot outside the vehicles.

Denis took 72 men under his command and they began their work in July. Of these so far three have been killed and 14 seriously wounded and returned to hospital in the UK, some with what they nowadays call “life changing” injuries. Two were blown up the day last week.

Denis has recently been home on a few days “rest and recuperation” with his wife and three young sons at Catterick, where the regiment is based, and flew back to the front line on Saturday.

Denis is front row, second from the right.

ADJUDICATOR ‘S DETERMINATION

The adjudicator’s determination on the objection made to our admis-sions arrangements has now been received. The adjudicator has not up-held the objection and has determined that admissions arrangements for 2011 should be as determined by the school’s Governing Body. Accordingly, there will be no change to this year’s arrangements.

We are pleased that the objection has not been upheld as we felt that the proposals that were being suggested would have been unfair and would have had a detrimental effect on the community schools which serve the majority of Sutton’s children. That said, we recognise that the objection raised serious issues which we have no intention of ignoring. It is a fact that the number of applicants to this school has risen very significantly over the last ten or so years and that has placed greater pressure on places. The Governing Body will be considering a range of possible ways in which we might be able to limit to some extent the number of applicants to the school and protect the interests that Sut-ton parents have in our school. We certainly share the concerns of the objector that boys from deprived areas within the authority are not cur-rently gaining places in sufficient numbers and we wish to work closely and urgently with primary schools and the local authority in addressing that issue in particular.

THE BANK OF ENGLAND 2.0 CHALLENGEMock Competition

Wilson’s vs. Wallington Boys’

Each year the Bank of England runs an inter-schools contest in which competing teams have to argue how they would keep inflation at or below the target rate of 2. 0 %. Every year Wilson’s enters a team and generally they acquit themselves very well. In preparation for the main event in November, the Economics department organised a mock contest with Wallington Boys which took place on 19 October. The two Wilson’s teams consisted of Jack Di Lizia, Wilson Lou , Nikesh Shah, James Daly and Mayghal Vijapura. With fifteen minutes of detailed presentation and two minutes of close questioning from the judges (one of whom was Mr Fletcher) the teams displayed excellent subject knowledge and the ability to respond to pressure. They also demon-strated that rare ability to communicate difficult issues with clarity and a winning persuasiveness. So, well done!

The event highlighted the learning opportunities for all the students who took part and the sense of achievement in competing against worthy opponents and coming out the victor. The team consisting of Wilson Lou and James Daly came out on top with a performance of cool teamwork and individual flair. Congratulations!

APPLE DAYOn Tuesday we celebrated our orchard and the Fruit-full Schools scheme by spending our lunch having fun with apples. Fresh apple juice was made us-ing a traditional wooden apple press; the competition for the longest unbro-ken peel was tightly fought, seven apple dishes were made for our judges to taste( from crumble to soup), and the apple bobbing was all going smoothly with varied degrees of success… that is until Mr Parkinson’s turn came!

The result of our house competitions were as follows:

APPLE BOBBING1st place went to Mr Parkinson of Greencoat with a whopping 10 ap-ples bobbed in a minute. The winning apple was spotted by the students amongst the mess on the floor – see the school website for the video.2nd place very close on his heels was Jordan Smith of 9S with an impressive 9 apples.

LONGEST PEEL1st place just got in after school and snatched victory from his head of house. Daniel Gonsalves of Camberwell managed to make an unbroken peel of 110cm.2nd place went to Mr Carew-Robinson whose specialist peeling ability got him a peel of 107cm.3rd place was Miss Wills who was not far behind for Brecon with 105cm. The next nearest student was Zaid El Bakkouri in 7 Hayes with 44cm.

BIGGEST APPLEWell, this was nearly a clean sweep for year 7 with Vasily Berdnikov of South-wark who took 1st and 3rd place.2nd place went to George Heinemann also in Southwark.

MOST APPLESThis looked like a tight contest until Oliver Tollford and Miss Keen turned up and swept Hayes to victory 1st Hayes – 62kg2nd Southwark – 30kg3rd Brecon – 15kg4th Greencoat – 8kg5th Camberwell – 6kg

THE BIG APPLE BAKE OFF1st place Max Riddings, 7 Camberwell2nd place Robert Cooke ,7 Hayes3rd place Daniel Hunt, L6 CamberwellSpecial mentions go to Rio for his soup and Miss Lemaire for her cake.

A huge thank you for all the support and we hope to see you all at the same time next year. Anyone who is interested in sponsoring the expansion of our school orchard can find the form online or ask Mr Phillips for a copy.

Lu Citeroni

We were very sad to learn this week of the death of Lu Citeroni who taught science and chemistry at Wilson’s between 1989 and 2003. Lu died in his sleep on Mon-day after a long battle with cancer. His wife, Virginia and his family were at his bedside in hopsital. As well as teaching here, Lu also ran the Chess Club for many years. After retirement he wrote a book on Opera and Wine, both of which were his great passions. He will be fondly remembered especially by members of the science department who worked with him.

Wilson’s vs. Carshalton

Y10 Wilson’s won 24 - 2Having been 0-17 down during the second half, the boys turned it on with tries from Chris Mallet (2), Rob Webster and Man of the Match Cameron Clark. The boys were thoroughly pleased with their efforts in the second half and hope this continues after half-term.

Y8 Wilson’s won 17 - 15The game started at a frantic pace, with Wilson’s dominating from the kick off! Wilson’s scored through James Sheridan, Ayo Akin-Agunbiade and Murdo Hepburn (plus a Murdo conversion) to lead 17-0. The weather turned very cold making it difficult to spread the play and get the ball to the wings, one of our many strengths. Carshalton started to gradually get back into the game, scoring 3 tries of their own, to make the score 17-15. The boys managed to defend for their lives to hold on for a fantastic well-earned victory.

CAMBERWELL HOUSE SPONSORED RELEBOHILEPlease find below some background information on Relebohile who is being sponsored by Camberwell House.

Relebohile Molia was born in 2001, and he is one of a family of four children. The family are Christian and they speak Sesotho. His family live in a house built of stones with a thatched roof. Houses in rural areas are either round and called ‘randabole’ or traditional rectangular houses called ‘heisi’. Relebohile’s father is a farmer and his mother works on their land.

HIV/AIDS affects education. Many teachers are infected and too ill to teach. Inadequate classrooms, unqualified teachers, remoteness of villages and compulsory school fees hinder children’s ability to receive a basic primary education. Relebohile goes to the local state school where he is learning to read and write.

ActionAid is working with Relebohile’s community to access their rights to food, liveli-hoods, water, education and helathcare, with particular focus on women and children affected by HIV/AIDS.

NEW CAR PARK GATESThere comes a point in each year, usually sometime in the spring term, when the number of sixth formers who have passed their driving test and who then wish to drive to school rises to the point that intolerable pres-sure is put on parking spaces in the car park. The result-ing overcrowding causes a health and safety hazard. That point has not yet arrived, and until it does, the new gates will remain open. When we decide that the time is right, however, the car park gates will be closed and locked by the car park attendant once the car park is full and no later than 8.30 a.m and will remain locked until 2.30 p.m. Places outside the gates will be reserved for the school minibuses, disabled parking, visitors and for staff who need to come and go during the school day.

Year 7 Enterprise Day

The future captains of industry were challenged and stretched on the Friday before half term. Mr Haggett, an old boy of the school who runs his own company designing computer games, tasked the boys with the challenge of designing a new computer game in 40 minutes. Excellent ideas included one involving zombies and a rail track, the concept of which went over most teachers’ heads, including that of Mrs Mitchel-more the Deputy Head, who was helping to judge the competition.

The boys were then given training on the best way to get a product idea across by entrepreneur Mrs Woods of Pampered Chef. The boys used their new skills to design and then present their ideas for a house prod-uct to Deputy Head Miss Smith and also Mrs Woods. Well done to team Laughs of Hayes House with their working model of a game and musical instrument which won them all the title of Young Entrepreneur 2010.

MARK McDONALD

Mark had decided to retire at the end of this aca-demic year. As it is he has cruelly been denied what was sure to have been a full and happy retirement.

Mark joined the school in 1989 and worked tire-lessly in and for the German department for over twenty years.

Staff will remember Mark as a witty conversa-tionalist and an avid crossword solver who was always ready with some newly minted merry quip. His light-hearted exterior opened up to reveal a thoughtful, supportive and considerate person. Mark was also always most welcoming to new members of staff and was able to empathise with their situation. He was ever helpful in the depart-ment and endlessly supported his colleagues, organising work schemes and supplying the necessary equipment and materials without any fuss at all. Mark also made an impact on school drama performing memorably in some of the staff pantomimes.

It goes without saying that he was a hardworking colleague who always put the students first. He built up very positive relationships with generations of pupils and gave up many lunchtimes to help those for whom the intricacies of German gram-mar were proving overwhelming. He will be fondly remembered by his A level students in particular. There are also many pupils who will delight in re-membering the trips to Germany that he organised.

Mark enjoyed his role as Form Tutor and many are the pupils who are still grateful for his unobtrusive but full pastoral care, helping them to meet the demands of school life without ever being an over-bearing presence. Earlier in his career at Wilson’s Mark helped out with football teams on a Saturday morning showing a sound sporting sense and an awareness of how important extra-curricular activi-ties are.

Mark will be sadly missed by all the staff and pupils at Wilson’s School.

If anyone would like to make a donation in Mark’s memory, his family have requested that it should go to either St. Christopher’s Hospice or to the Royal Marsden Hospital.

Wilson’s CCF returned on Friday from a very successful half term camp at Longmoor Training Camp. The camp has in recent years become a perma-nent fixture for the contingent, utilising the perfect training environment provided by the MOD to deliver a variety of exciting training topics such as fieldcraft, range experiences (both indoor and outdoor), obstacle courses, Drill, PT and sport. This year the CCF took away over 30 cadets to the range camp (held at the start of the week) and 21 boys to the JNCO camp (held during the later stages of the week). The cadets recorded some excellent scores during the shooting phase of the programme along with activities such as the military obstacle course (with all of the cadets getting over the 10 foot wall), military planning exercises (some excellent results shown by Wilson’s cadets), PT (every morning at 0530hrs, again a high degree of de-termination shown throughout each session.) and sport. The second half of the week saw the arrival of the Year 10 cadets, on their JNCO cadre (working towards their first promotion to Lance Corporal within the CCF). The cadre was designed to show them the standards required to achieve their initial rank in the contingent. Training subjects covered, amongst others, were leadership, fieldcraft, physical fitness, drill and military knowledge, all of which were well received. Maximum effort and determination were shown throughout, a mark of Wilson’s CCF cadets.

All the cadets commented on how much they had enjoyed their time at Longmoor and whether it was improving their shooting on the range camp or getting an insight into the requirements to be a successful JNCO in the CCF: they all agreed it was a very worthwhile experience.

Applications are now being taken from this year’s Year 9 to join the CCF. Letters were given out during the recruits’ day held on 22 October and should be returned by end of school day on Monday November 8.

Master Chef FinalTempers were high, ovens were hot – the pressure was on as four teams battled it out for the 2010 Senior Master Chef final. The challenge was to deliver a full meal; starter, main course and dessert within a time limit of one and a half hours. The standard was certainly higher than in the previous heats with teams really trying to impress our judge Mr Handley. Mr Handley is Executive Head Chef at the Royal Opera House where he manages four restaurants and a team of thirty eight chefs. Commenting on Wilson’s Master Chef he said “the boys rose to the challenge, delivered on time and all had at least one dish that I would happily include in a menu”. Well done to this year’s winners, Laurence De Souza and Patrice Ng Wing Wye of Greencoat House. Our thanks go to Mr Pryse-Hawkins for helping to organise the competition and to Mr Handley for judging it.

The Cambridge Union Schools’ Debating Competition 2010/11

A Debating Triumph for Wilson’sCongratulations to Damjan Veljanoski and Brandon Lundini for making it through to the regional finals of the Cambridge University Schools Debate. The southern heat was held at Epsom College with competition from a number of schools in the area including Whitgift, Epsom, Coloma and Wallington Grammar. The boys took part in the prepared debate “This House would ban music that glorifies crime”, and the unprepared debate “This House would ban faith schools”. The debate was extremely tough, and the boys had to debate hard against worthy opposition from Coloma and Epsom College. In the end, the judge awarded the win to Damjan and Brandon, complimenting both boys on their debating skills, and in particular Damjan’s strong and innovative summarising skills. The boys will progress to the regional final which will take place next term. Congratulations to the winners, as well as Kes, Beojan, Ashley and Dhruv who also took part in the competition. 6th form debating is held every Friday in room 10 at lunch time. If you are interested in taking part in upcoming debates including The London School of Economics Debate and the Oxford University Schools Debate, please see Miss Androlia.

Mr Handley with Ciaran Gowan of Hayes House.

Debating : World Schools ChampionshipsGeorge Driscoll, Harrison Gower, Conrad Jefferies and Will Ries took part in a in a warm-up competition for the World Schools Championships last weekend, gaining valuable experience within a different debating style. Competing against some experienced sixth formers, they creditably won their third round tie, although they are not eligible for the final. Congrat-ulations to all four students on their excellent performance.

GREEN BOXESYou may have noticed a rash of Green Boxes spread-ing around the classrooms in school. The boxes can be used for recycling paper or card and are emptied once a week. A group of mainly Year 10 students have been performing this task over the last half term and in the process have been scoring each room out of 10 for their recycling prowess. After six weeks of recy-cling it is our pleasure to announce that the History and RE Office (which also includes Citizenship and Govt and Politics) was the best room, beating off stiff competition from Mr Cole’s office and room 25. The award will be up for grabs again at the end of this half term. In order to obtain high marks, the Green Box should be well used with no sign of paper or card in the classroom rubbish bin. We are trying to expand the scheme to include as many rooms as possible, so if there is no green box in your room currently, we will try and get one to you as soon as possible.

ECO-SCHOOLS MEETINGThere will be an Eco-Schools meeting on Wednesday 17 November in room 21 at 1.20pm. We will be discussing plans for progressing to our Green Flag Award. All members of the Eco teams who have been at previous meetings are invited to attend. If you have any questions please speak to Mr Seymour or Mr Phillips.

SIXTH FORM OPEN EVENINGOur thanks go to those boys and staff who gave up their time to help out at the sixth form Open Evening on Tuesday 9 November. Everything ran smoothly due to to all their hard work, enthusiasm and energy.

Young Geographer of the Year Army Scholarship Competition

Our congratulations go to Ed Hicks who has been provision-ally awarded an Army Scholarship. These are notoriously hard to come by and we wish him well in the final part of the competition.

Our congratulations go to Chris Hogg (U61) who has been named Young Geographer of the Year (16 – 18 year old) by The Royal Geographical Society. Chris will receive his prize at an award ceremony in Kensington on Friday 19 November. His entry for the competition, themed ‘Sorting the wood from the trees: the future of forests’, beat entrants from across the UK and Europe.

ATTENDANCE AT INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC LESSONS

There is now a new system of registering a student when they should be at an instrumental lesson. Codes are entered into the system in advance, which means that if your son has for-gotten to go to his lesson, the classroom teacher will be able to remind him. This system will not apply to boys who have a music lesson during either morning or afternoon registration.

If a student does not arrive for an instrumental lesson, after 5 minutes the instrumental tutor will fetch him from his lesson. A note will be left on the door of the practice room if a teacher has left the room so that the student will know to wait for them to come back.

It is hoped that this will significantly decrease missed instru-mental lessons. It will also allow for any clashes to be identified early and resolved. If a lesson does need to be changed, please contact the instrumental teacher in the first instance, who will notify the school.

GCSE MUSICIANS’ EVENING - 17 NOVEMBERWe do hope to see as many students and parents as possible at our GCSE Musicians’ Evening next Wednesday 17 November at 7pm in the main school hall.

You can drop them off at reception and they will be passed on to Mr Phillips for Gardening club on Thursday lunch time.

Your son will shortly be coming home with a voucher from Woodcote Nursery. All you have to do is hand in the voucher with any purchase and the school will be awarded 25p. If you happen to go to their Christmas Grotto you can hand in your voucher to Santa and he will give you a gold ver-sion worth £1 to the school if handed in! As student gardening goes from strength to strength at Wil-son’s we always need funds to support the students and your continued support is greatly appreciated.

MARK MCDONALD

The McDonald family would like to thank all students, staff and parents for their support and generosity throughout this sad time. Your cards, emails and kind words gave us an insight into how much Mark meant to everyone and your tributes to him have provided much comfort.

We would also like to extend our thanks to all those who attended the funeral last week and helped make it such a poignant celebration of his life. You have also helped us to raise a lot of money for The Royal Marsden and St. Christo-pher’s Hospice where Mark received such excellent care. Thank you so much.

WILSON’S REMEMBERS

The School and The Combined Cadet Force marked Armistice Day and Remembrance Sunday in a number of ways. On Monday, Tuesday and Thursday Mr Charnock conducted moving remembrance assemblies based around the story of the Battle of Fromell and the recent excava-tions at the site of the battle. Each assembly included the laying of a wreath by the School Captain escorted by two senior cadets drawn from the Army and RAF sections of the CCF. On Armistice Day F/Sgt Guy Morgan and Sgt Ben Newman-Sanders provided escort to the Mayor of Croydon as she laid a wreath at the Cenotaph outside the town hall. On Sunday more than five officers, the SSI and more than sixty cadets paraded through Croydon Town Centre with the TA, Sea Cadets, ACF and ATC and Police Cadets in Number 1 Contingent of the formal Remem-brance Sunday parade in the town. They were complimented for their turn out and bearing and were rightly proud to lay wreaths on behalf of the Corps and the School.

ANIMATED CHRISTMAS CARD COMPETITION

There will be an inter-house best animated Christmas card competition. The card must be produced from scratch and this will be verified by Mrs Gill. House points will be awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in the following groups:

Years 7 & 8Years 9 & 10Years 11-13

Entries should be sent to Mrs Gill and the deadline for the receipt of entries is Wednesday 8 December.

Year 10 House Chemistry ChallengeOn Friday 12 November 7 teams (one from Brecon, Greencoat and Hayes and two teams from Camberwell and Southwark) comprising 4 boys each took part in the annual Royal Society of Chemistry Challenge for year 10 boys. After four demanding rounds to find the Kings of Chemistry at Wilson’s the final scores were very close. The ‘Camberwell 2 ‘ team were the overall win-ners with the Brecon team a close second and the ‘Southwark 1’ and Greencoat team drawing for the third place. Both the Camberwell 2 team and the Brecon team are now put forward to the South East Regional competition. We wish them well. The Camberwell 2 victors were Tanay Verma, Simon Phillips, Callum Mance and Arslan Rana.

HOUSE POINTSCamberwell remain top but are looking behind them at Brecon who swept the board in the debating. Southwark in third continue to put pressure on the leaders after second place in the debate. Year 7 also earnt them 30 points after a nomination for best efforts in the ‘Love in a Box’ campaign. Greencoat have a poor showing in the debate, with no shows to some rounds of the competition, meaning a gap opens up above them and below them........ Hayes continue to gain ground.

Year 10 Rise to the ChallengeFor enterprise week teams from each of the school houses were challenged to design a product or service that could be sold on a market stall. The brief stipulated that it should be ready for Christmas and be different from anything else that might be available. The day started with a team building task which allowed the groups to elect a leader and allocate team roles. Once ideas were generated they were further developed and prices and costs calculated ready for presentation to the judges, the Headmaster Mr. Charnock and Year Manager Mr. Phillips. The ideas appeared to centre around food and smells, these included a one stop stall for all your sustainable Christmas products, a world food stall, cards with a Christmas fragrance, a hot fruit soup and winners - Fragrables, an air freshener in the shape of a bauble. Well done to Camberwell who both won points for their house and whose entry will be put forward for the national competition. Pictured: Tanay Verma, Ben Flook, Sam Wright, Karim Abu-

Rotary DebateThere was a valiant effort to defend their title at the Rotary Debate held at Wilson’s on 16th November. Teams from Surrey schools including Wal-lington, Nonsuch and Carshalton gathered to battle it out on the debat-ing floor. The 3 teams from Wilson’s included controversial topics such as “Is money really the root of all evil?” and “Nuclear Weapons should Not be Disarmed”, and the main school put in an excellent argument that “Society is crushing our independent thought”. In the end, Wilson’s were beaten by an experienced team from Wallington, but hope to regain their title next year. Well done to all the boys concerned. A reminder that main school debating is held in room 16 and 6th form debating is held in room 10 – both on Friday lunch times.

Senior Team Maths ChallengeThis is a tough tournament where participants work as a group or in pairs. The Wilson’s Team, comprising Alex McMillan (U6), Mayghal Vijapura (U6), Matthew Rogers (L6) and Aditya Gutpa (L6) travelled to the central London regional final. They all worked together in the group round and solved all but one problem successfully. They then tackled the cross number in pairs, where each pair only have half the clues. Again they only lost a couple of marks. Finally came the mini-relay where the answer to a question solved by one pair was needed by the other pair to solve their problem. Despite another excellent performance Wilson’s were just pipped at the end by City of London Boys School, and so came an excellent second out of the fifteen schools taking part.

Senior Maths ChallengeWilson’s students taking this toughest of the individual maths chal-lenges have obtained outstanding results. A record 9 pupils performed exceptionally well and qualified for the British Mathematical Olympiad. Leading scores were achieved by Alex McMillan (U6), Charlie Osborn (L6), Reaz Baksh (L6), Keith Barker (11S) and Joe Sutcliffe (U6). Daniel Hunt (L6), Michael Vereycken (10C), Victor Mikhno (U6) and Scott Eng-land (11S) also qualified for the Olympiad. Another 13 students gained gold awards (making a school record of 22 in total), with 42 silver and 36 bronze. Hans Woyda MathsIn their second league match in the inter-school Maths tournament, Wilson’s played against Trinity, last year’s beaten finalist. Wilson’s took an early lead, but the match remained very close until the final race round. Trinity then pulled ahead to win the match 50 to 41.

SIXTH FORM DEBATING CLUBTwo important debating competitions are coming up. The London School of Economics is holding its annual 6th form debate on 4th December, in which teams will speak on a range of topics, breaking to a final and dinner provided by LSE. The second competition is an unfamiliar competition to Wilson’s, and is being held 15th January at the School of African Studies, which will be an all day debate similar to LSE and Oxford. This will be a great opportunity for the boys to flex their debating skills, and prepare for the upcoming Oxford and Cambridge Debates, as well as having the opportunity to spend time at the universities they may consider applying to in the future. If you are interested in taking part in any upcom-ing debates, please see Miss Androlia. 6th form debating club is held every Friday lunch time in room 10.

MODERN FOREIGN LANGUAGES SUMMER VISITSLists of the students who are participants in the Modern Foreign Languages trips to Cologne or Northern France are now posted on the school website, (on the Modern Foreign Languages page) Please consult them to see that your deposit payment has been recorded. Please make the cheques payable to Wilson’s School Private Funds and ask your son to place the pay-ment in the red post box underneath the stairs in the main foyer.

WILSON’S TARGET 2.0 VICTORYTarget 2.0 is the interschool contest organised by the Bank of England to encourage the nations most able and enthusiastic economics students to debate the thorny issue of how best to use interest rates and money supply to keep inflation at the target of 2%. The decision also requires consideration of other key economic objectives; economic growth, unemployment and imports and exports. The contest involves each team arguing their case in the form of a detailed 15 minutes presentation and then being subjected to close and prolonged questioning from the judges (representatives from the Bank of England) on aspects of their argument – a very tall order.

The first round of the contest took place on Wednesday, 23 No-vember at the Croydon Aerodrome Hotel and this year Wilson’s was able to field a particularly strong team in the form of Jack Di Lizia, Wilson Lou, Nikesh Shah and James Daly, all in Year 13. The competition was formidable, with entrants from Whitgift, Non-such, Coloma and Sutton Grammar amongst the line up. How-ever, the Wilson’s team argued convincingly for keeping interest rates at 0.5 % and holding off on quantitative easing. The team gave an excellent account of themselves: knowledgeable, well rehearsed, confident and more than ready for the panel’s inter-rogation - they swept all before them. So, it’s on to the regional final in February 2011! Congratulations once again to the Wil-son’s team for their hard work – several months of preparation, competitive spirit and willingness to stretch themselves in the cause of excellence. Many thanks to Mr Ormonde for mentoring the team.

GCSE AND A LEVEL MUSICIANSGCSE and A level musicians enjoyed a visit on Wednesday night to the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra’s performance of Holst’s Planets Suite and Bruch’s Violin Concerto performed by former BBC Young Musician of the Year Nicola Benedetti.

SUTTON SECONDARY SCHOOLS CHALLENGEOn Monday this week, six boys from Year 8 represented Wilson’s in the inaugural Sutton Secondary Schools Maths Challenge. This was led by STEMNET (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Network) Ambassadors who were able to inform students first hand about mathematics used in context. This included real life examples from the Actuarial profession, Project Management and Pharmaceutical Manufacturing upon which each of the challenges were based. The boys representing Wilson’s were: Harry Goodburn, Luke Curran, Max Rivens, Yusuf El-Hilly, Neev Trehan and Harry Fairman, all of whom were exem-plary in their teamworking skills and determination. Although we did not collect the spoils on the day, the boys gained valuable experience competing as a team and discovered first hand about maths used in real life professional applications.

YEAR 7 HOUSE POINTS MATHS CHALLENGEThis term has seen the Year 7 House Points Maths Challenge take place. Each week, Year 7 boys have competed against each other in their houses to be the first to answer challenging maths questions correctly. This has been a closely fought competition with all houses being very keen to claim victory each week. The overall winning house for the competition though is Southwark who have hauled the most house points over the series and claimed the trophy. Well done to all houses though as every house has demonstrated real teamwork and enthusiasm!

WILSON’S CHARITY WINTER CONCERTThe festive season started in style on Wednesday evening with an excellent Winter Concert in aid of St Raphael’s Hospice featuring all of the school’s major ensembles and culminating with a stun-ning performance of Warlock’s Capriol Suite and Superman Returns by John Williams. The concert had been postponed from last week so many thanks to the parents for their patience and will-ingness to turn out a week later on still icy roads. It was certainly worth the effort as the quality of the performances was first rate. It was particularly pleasing to see so many more of the school’s musicians performing in the ensembles and obviously enjoying the experience. Thanks and congratulations to all who performed and thanks particularly to the teachers; Ms Bright, Mrs Dennis and Mr Willey who led ensembles, and most especially to Mr Lissimore for his work in directing and masterminding the evening as well as preparing and conducting several of the performances.

Southwark gained points for second place in the Geog-raphy quiz and James Daly being in the Target 2.0 team. Green-coat came third in the quiz but are the only house to have two representatives, Jack Di Lizia and Nikesh Shah in the Target 2.0 competition. Hayes slipped back after their cake bake showing with fifth in the quiz and nobody picked for the Target 2.0 team.Next week’s totals will include credit totals so make sure your Year Manager gets them this week!

WILSON’S GETS COOKING - FROM JANUARY

After successfully completing a one day cooking demonstra-tion course with “Let’s Get Cooking” the school is aiming to set up two cooking clubs next term. Jake South, Sam Giles and Milan Patel all attended the one day course with Mr. Jones and Ms Keen. Skills learnt included how to use a knife properly, how to measure ingredients correctly and most importantly how to wash up…..

The aim of the “Let’s Get Cooking” club at Wilson’s will be to encourage students and parents to take an interest in food issues, diet and cooking. The course will include teaching not just how to make a chocolate cake, but also how to make it healthy! Let’s get cooking are providing some funds to help the school set up the cooking club.

It is hoped that the club will run for Year 9’s after school on a Thursday and during Thursday lunchtime for Lower Sixth. If any parent would like to become involved, is willing to share their expertise or would like to learn the best way to slice an onion then please do get in touch. To make the club a success we are looking for parent volunteers to help out with the Year 9 after school club. Any interested parent should contact Mr. Jones through the school office.

For more information on Let’s get cooking visit their web site.

DIRK GENTLY DETECTIVE SERIESCongratulations to Elliot Sutherland (9G) who will be appearing in the BBC drama Dirk Gently detective series, written by Douglas Ad-ams of Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy Fame. This will be screened on the evening of 16 December on BBC4. We look forward to see-ing him in future productions.

YEAR 7 MENTORSOn Friday 26 November, twenty hand-picked Sixth Form studentswere put through their paces by Cynthia Jones a lecturer in Psychology from Kingston University. The day’s training provided the boys with all the skills necessary to provide support and guidance to the new Year 7 students. They will work closely with the pastoral team and will be available as a ‘listening ear’ should Year 7 students have questions and issues they wish to discuss. They will be introduced to the Year 7 dur-ing Year assembly at the beginning of December and the Mentors have been told to be ready to provide support on a whole variety of issues ranging from help with homework to ‘Why have I not been picked for the school football team?’!!

MATHS, FURTHER MATHS, EVEN MORE MATHS.......During the Autumn term, Dr Cooper again ran a series of four twilight maths sessions for top sixth form maths students in the area. Sessions were about being prepared for Senior Maths Challenge, the Oxford Maths test, University interviews and the British Maths Olympiad. Students from a range of schools attend these, including Wallington Girls, Nonsuch, Rosebery, Sutton High School, Harris City Academy and Trinity School, as well as Wilson’s.

Also during this term we have held a series of joint Upper Sixth ‘Future in maths’ sessions with Wallington Girls. These included an introduction to mathematical topics such as game theory and fractals as well as prepara-tion for Senior Maths Challenge and University interviews.

In the spring term we will be running STEP maths sessions jointly with Old Palace School for sixth form pupils who wish to look at tough maths problems. Whilst for those in the lower sixth such problems can be treated as an enjoyable challenge, for others, learning how to tackle such problems is vital as doing well in the STEP papers (Sixth Term Entrance Papers) is a condition of studying maths at Cambridge, Warwick or Bath.

TABLE-TENNIS RESULTSThe school U16 team were close to winning the London South team championship at Whitgift last Friday week. They won their quarter final by beating Orleans Park 8-0 and then beat Woodcote Park 7-1 in the semi-final. The final against Stanley Park was as close as it gets with the final score at 4-4. In these situations, the result is on count back of games and we lost 15-13, a difference of two games. Needless to say, the whole team played very well with Alex Yee and Liam Grant losing just one match throughout the tournament. They had excellent support from Amar Shukla, Kartik Iyer and Alex Rolls. They may get into the E.S.T.T.A. regional event as a close loser, where they will join our U19 team who have al-ready qualified. This will be held at Kemnal T.T.C. Sidcup on Sunday 16 January. The U13 team also went down bravely when they played in the same event hosted by Wilson’s last Tuesday. They comfortably beat Hayes 8-0 but then narrowly lost to the eventual winners, K.C.S. Wimbledon by 5-3. Alex Sparks remained unbeaten throughout the afternoon and Curtis Rose only lost one match. The rest of the team consisted of Ewan Robert-son, Christian Kouppas and Vyas Raina.
