My granddad had poor eyesight, too, when he was just a kid.

He, too, had horn-rimmed spectaclesbehind whose rims he hid.

Some kids called him four eyesand other nasty names.

He couldn’t join a football team,or play at certain games.

But, he didn’t sook, he didn’t cry.He got a library card.

A whole new world opened up for himwhich he studied long and hard.My granddad still wears glasses

and he really doesn’t care. You see,

My clever four-eyed granddadis today a millionaire.

CAMPING NIGHTSCarmel Randle

On nights when we go campingAnd the others are in bed,

I like to lie and watch the starsThat twinkle overhead.

‘Cause when you go out campingYou can see so many more!

And I can spot some satellitesI’ve never seen before!

Dad says it is the darknessAway from city lights,

And certainly the nights at homeAre not like camping nights!

But sometimes when the moon is highShe puts the stars to shame!

Although those nights are beautiful,They’re somehow not the same!

For camping nights, when pinpoints danceLike brilliant fire-flies

Are magic times to contemplateThe mystery of the skies.

PUZZLEMENTAnnette Kosseris

I used to be so puzzled. Yes, it really worried me!I searched all through the park for it

and climbed every tree.I questioned everybody as to where it could be found;

did it fly like a bird? Burrow in the ground? Was it cuddly? Was it scruffy?

Did it roar? Did it squeak?Would you find it in the water? Does it have a beak?

Is it furry? Is it scaly? Is its body straight or twisted?

I’d search through the dictionary,A “YA” wasn’t listed!

My Gran gave a home to a little stray dog;I saw a stray cat as I went for a jog;

abandoned in the street was an old stray car;but my question was – what’s a stray “YA”?

They were always in the news –‘A STRAY YA WINS THE GOLD!”

‘A STRAY YA’S GOING TO THE POLLS!’‘A STRAY YA”S WHEAT IS SOLD….’

I’m older now, the puzzle’s solvedbut please – speak with care;we often hear the phrase sung

“Advance A Stray Ya Fair!”

Consider little children too young to read or spell. When next you say our country’s name

please put in the L. Austra - L - ia!There’s many a stray cat, and perhaps a stray car,

but there’s no such thingas a stray “YA”!

PSALM 1: 1 - 6 True Happiness

1. Happy are thosewho reject the advice of evil men,who do not follow the example of sinnersor join those who have no use for God.

2. Instead, they find joy in obeying the Law of the Lord, and they study it day and night.

3. They are like trees that grow beside a stream, that bear fruit at the right time, and whose leaves do not dry up.

They succeed in everything they do.

4. But evil men are not like this at all;they are like straw that the wind blows away.

5. Sinners will be condemned by Godand kept apart from God’s own people.

6. The righteous are guided and protected by the Lord, but the evil are on the way to their doom.

JOHN 15: 1 -17 Jesus the Real Vine

1 “I am the real vine, and my Father is the gardener. 2 He breaks offevery branch in me that does not bear fruit, and he prunes every branch thatdoes bear fruit, so that it will be clean and bear more fruit. 3 You have beenmade clean already by the teaching I have given you. 4 Remain united to me,and I will remain united to you. A branch cannot bear fruit by itself; it can doso only if it remains in the vine. In the same way you cannot bear fruit unlessyou remain in me.

5 “I am the vine, and you are the branches. Whoever remains in me,and I in him, will bear a great deal of fruit; for you can do nothing without me.6 Whoever does not remain in me is thrown out like a branch and dries up;such branches are gathered up and thrown into the fire, where they are burnt.7 If you remain in me and my words remain in you, then you will ask foranything you wish, and you shall have it. 8 My Father's glory is shown by yourbearing a lot of fruit; and in this way you become my disciples. 9 I love youjust as the Father loves me; remain in my love. 10 If you obey my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed my Father's commands andremain in his love.

11 “I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joymay be complete. 12 My commandment is this: love one another, just as Ilove you.

13 The greatest love a person can have for his friends is to give his lifefor them. 14 And you are my friends if you do what I command you. 15 I donot call you servants any longer, because a servant does not know what hismaster is doing. Instead, I call you friends, because I have told youeverything I have heard from my Father. 16 You did not choose me; I choseyou and appointed you to go and bear fruit, the kind of fruit that endures. Andso the Father will give you whatever you ask of him in my name. 17 This, then, is what I command you: love one another.

GIGGLES AND WOESAnnette Kosseris

Giggles and woes and anything goes?I know what a giggle is; but what is a ‘woe’?

I think I know!I sometimes hear people say“Ah-woe! ‘Ow ya goin’ t’day?”

I think they mean ‘hello’, you know.

Yes. I know. But they say ‘Ah-woe.’

Let’s get the book and have a look. Then we’ll know without a doubt!

Yes! The dictionary will sort it out!

Let’s see now……..Woe.

Here we go! It says “distress or trouble.”So that’s what it means!

Yes. Like lots of ‘woe’, if you don’t eat your greens!

Everyone has a woe or two!A woe is sometimes good for you!

But if you giggle a giggleThree times a day,

The woes will all just fly away!

That’s true! You’ll see! It works for me!

I know it’s true. Yep! As true as can be!

THE THINGAnnette Kosseris

Pshhh! Gor! Reee! Pquarrr! Pshhh! Gor! Reee! Pquarrr!Pquarrr! Reee! Gor! Pshhh! Pquarrr! Reee! Gor! Pshhh!

I know that sounds a funny noise, but that is what we heard! It wasn’t made by a gorilla, nor a tiger, or a bird.We were walking home from school, after getting off the bus,When suddenly, we heard this – ‘Thing’ making such a fuss!

Pshhh! Gor! Reee! Pquarrr! Pshhh! Gor! Reee! Pquarrr!Pquarrr! Reee! Gor! Pshhh! Pquarrr! Reee! Gor! Pshhh!

BOP!

We ran in the direction from which the noise had come,It led us round a corner – then we were struck dumb!Oh, you’ll never guess what confronted us that day.Our eyes stood out like saucers! We tried to run away!

It had a sort of oblong body, and a dome upon its head,And coloured lights that flashed, yellow, blue and red!Our feet were stuck! And our knees wouldn’t bend! Then Bill said, in his bravest voice,“Are you…(gulp)enemy….or…friend?”

The ’Thing’ began to tick – and make a funny sound. Its mouth typed a message, which fell to the ground!Bill picked it up and read aloud the message in his hand:I’ve come to earth..to help you..form..an electronic band!

We all began to cheer then! We knew it would be funTo make those cool noises! Now our practice has begun!Beeeeeep! Bee-Bee! Beep! Clang! Clang! Clink!Pshhh! Gor! Reee! Pquarrr! Pshhh! Gor! Reee! LORIKEETSPeter Skrzynecki

North from the rainforestsThey invaded our treesIn their screeching flocks –

Each morning, bringing summerOn green-and-gold wings, crimson breasts,Purple rainbows of outspread tails:

These nomads they lay wasteTo orchards and crops – camphor laurels,Silky oaks, black bean trees

Arching with blossoms and honey.Leaving the ground darkenedWith torn leaves, branches, empty buds,

By midday they were goneLike a storm cloud – south or northWe could never tell

As they wheeled in circlesAbove the valley forestsOr skimmed the river like driven snow:

Back and forth over a green mirrorThat would not show the colourOf their eyes – leaving a forecast

Of hail or mountain firesWritten in a strange, piercing tongueOn every tree and morning dream they had ravaged.

CRAB MEATRyhll McMaster

We would go down along the creekwhich tainted its way, drain-choked, to the beach, over a sand strung bridgeto where stain-red tins and drums rusted in a bend. That was where we bought our crab meat.

A not youngwoman owned the place –lived among discarded claws and legs, rotting carapacesand a dead sea stench.Death-clenched or mangled-open claws grew on the drivealong with a forest of dried-upcrabs’ eyes.

Opening the finger-marked doorwe would pause as the breathfrom the pots grabbed at our teeththen reach in, for the crab womanto say “More?”

Yes – more sweet, red tipped, white strung meatwrapped, paper-clean, small-packaged by her stalk-eyedsullen children.

They would scuttlesideways, gazing at our feetwhile we discreetlyignored the whistling screamsand steam-dim, hot water strugglesof the tossed in victims.

Then, out again,into the stiff air,away from the scraped-out armour carapacesand the papier-mâché faces of the crab woman and herbrood;

and just think of it as sea foodto be delicately eaten.

ISAIAH 53; 1 - 9

1 The people reply, "Who would have believed what we now report?Who could have seen the Lord's hand in this?

2 It was the will of the Lord that his servant should grow like a planttaking root in dry ground. He had no dignity or beauty to make us take noticeof him. There was nothing attractive about him, nothing that would draw us tohim.

3 We despised him and rejected him; he endured suffering and pain. Noone would even look at him - we ignored him as if he were nothing.

4 "But he endured the suffering that should have been ours, the pain thatwe should have borne. All the while we thought that his suffering waspunishment sent by God.

5 But because of our sins he was wounded, beaten because of the evilwe did. We are healed by the punishment he suffered, made whole by theblows he received.

6 All of us were like sheep that were lost, each of us going his own way.But the Lord made the punishment fall on him, the punishment all of usdeserved.

7 "He was treated harshly, but endured it humbly; he never said a word.Like a lamb about to be slaughtered, like a sheep about to be shorn, he neversaid a word.

8 He was arrested and sentenced and led off to die, and no one caredabout his fate. He was put to death for the sins of our people.

9 He was placed in a grave with evil men, he was buried with the rich, even though he had never committed a crime or ever told a lie."

ISAIAH 6: 1- 9

GOD CALLS ISAIAH TO BE A PROPHET

1 In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord. He was sitting on histhrone, high and exalted, and his robe filled the whole Temple.

2 Around him flaming creatures were standing, each of which had six wings. Each creature covered its face with two wings, and its body with two, andused the other two for flying.

3 They were calling out to each other:"Holy, holy, holy!

The Lord Almighty is holy! His glory fills the world."

4 The sound of their voices made the foundation of the Temple shake, andthe Temple itself was filled with smoke.

5 I said, "There is no hope for me! I am doomed because every word thatpasses my lips is sinful, and I live among a people whose every word issinful. And yet, with my own eyes I have seen the King, the Lord Almighty."

6 Then one of the creatures flew down to me, carrying a burning coal that hehad taken from the altar with a pair of tongs.

7 He touched my lips with the burning coal and said, "This has touched yourlips, and now your guilt is gone, and your sins are forgiven."

8 Then I heard the Lord say, "Whom shall I send? Who will be ourmessenger?" I answered, "I will go! Send me!"

9 So he told me to go and give the people this message: "No matter howmuch you listen, you will not understand. No matter how much you look, youwill not know what is happening."
