HeadCoachJuanMascaroisbeginninghisfourthyearatthehelmofthe Brevard College men’s soccer program, as the Tornados into their second yearasfullNCAADivisionIIandSouthAtlanticConferencemembers.
MascarowasselectedtotheNCAADivisionIISoutheastRegional AdvisoryCommitteein2010-2011andwillhelpwiththegathering and sharing of results for teams within their conference or geographical area,therankingofthetopteamsintheregion,theprovisionofinput intheselectionofofficialsforthechampionship,theprovisionofinput intheselectionofsitesforchampionshipcompetitionandtheserviceas asoundingboardfortheNCAADivisionIIMen’sSoccerCommittee.
In2008,Mascaroledthemen’ssoccerteamtoa5-14-1recordin theirinauguralseasonasmembersofNCAADivisionIIandtheSAC.The TornadosrecordedtheirfirstSACwinoverLincolnMemorial,2-1,onOct. 24.ThehighlightoftheseasoncameonOct.15whentheytook DivisionIWinthropintodoubleovertime,beforefalling2-1.
DuringhistimeatBrevard,Mascarohasguidedthemen’ssoccerteam to a 9-28-2 record, playingafullSACslate, which includes four NCAADivisionII National Tournament participantsandthe NCAADIINational Championship runner-up.
Mascaro comes to BrevardfromCampbell Universitywherehe
spent two seasons as theAssistantWomen’sSoccerCoach.DuringhisfirstseasonatCampbell,hehelpedtheFightingCamelstoadvanceintothe2005AtlanticSunConferenceChampionship.Fromthisoutstanding performance the Camels ended their season witha6-3-1leaguerecordand8-9-2overall.WhileatCampbellhisdutiesincludedtrainingthegoalkeepers,recruitingcoordinatorandmonitoringtheacademicprogressofthestudentathletes.
PriortoCampbell,hewastheAssistantMen’sSoccer CoachfortheUniversityofCentralFloridaforfive seasons. During his tenure, the Golden Knights were rankedashighasnumber-13nationallyandwonthe AtlanticSunConferenceChampionship.Duringhislast three seasons with the Golden Knights the team finishedwitha35-20-1overallrecord.Hismainareas ofresponsibilitiesfortheKnightsincludedtrainingthe goalkeepers,recruitingcoordinatorassistingthehead coach in all areas of team training.
AnativeofElSalvador,Mascaroearnedhisundergraduate degreeinBusinessAdministrationin1994andhisMaster ofArtsinAppliedEconomicsin1999fromtheUniversity ofCentralFlorida.HecurrentlyholdshisNSCAANational CoachingDiplomaearnedin1994andAdvancedNational Diploma in 1995.

Witharosterspanningsixcountriesandmultiplestates,CoachMascarowillbelookingtoseniorsHenriErti,NiclasStolt,MiroMustonenandRenatoBarbosatomentorthesquadfeaturing17underclassmenandexpectstheseniorstoprovidestabilityandleadershipfromthetopinoneofthepremierconferencesintheNCAA.
ForwardsReturningupfrontfortheTornadosattheforwardpositionareErtiandsophomoreAlecDarcey.Ertirecorded11 shots last season and was one of three Tornados to play in every single contest last season, while Darcey recordedanassistlastseasonamonghissixstartsand18gamesonthepitch.JuniortransferJaimeVillacisandfreshmenSeanAllisonandAndrewGallowitcharealsoexpectedtobattleforplayingtimeupfrontandeacharecapablegoalscorerstohelpraisetheoffensiveoutputfromlastseason.
MidfieldersStoltandBarbosareturnstoguideaveteran-ladenmidfieldforBrevard,andStoltistheteam’sleadingshottakerreturningfromlastseasonwith12shotslastseasonwithfiveongoal.BarbosaisthereturningleadinggoalscorerfortheTornadosfromlastyear,findingthenettwiceasasophomore,withgoalsagainstErskineandSACOpponentLenoir-Rhyne.JuniorsAnthonyCardenas,TimBlevinsandDimitriusMcCloghryalsoreturn,aswellassophomoresPaulBergvinandIanBakertochallengeforplayingtimeandwillhelpmentorthefreshmenclassofJacobParker,JamiUuttu,PatrickUrmson,AdamMartinandNinoJessup.
DefendersMustonendotstheTornadosmen’ssoccerrecordbooksandplayedin17gameslastseasonasadefenderfortheTornados.HereturnswithjuniorScottSchuurmanasamemberofoneofthestrongestgroupsonthesquadfortheseason.AlsoreturningissophomoresLandonReidandRyanGuill.GuillscoredagoalforBrevardlastseasonagainstNorthGreenvilleandiscapableofprovidinganoffensivethreatfromthebacklinefortheTornados.
GoalkeepersReturninginbetweenthepipesislastseason’sstarterJackShawandjuniorThomasKombol.ShawfinishedfourthintheSouthAtlanticConferencelastseasoninsaveswith81lastseasonandrecordedthelonevictoryforBrevard.Kombolsawactioninthreegamesaswelllastseason,providingdepthfortheTornadoskeeperposition.NewcomersRyanBaileyandPauliJussilawillalsocompetefortimeinthegoalforCoachMascarothisupcoming season.

TheSouthAtlanticConferencewasfoundedin1975solelyasafootballconference.Theleaguereceivedits name from a contest in which Kurt Brenneman of Greensboro,NCbecamethefirsttosubmittheSAC-8moniker.
TheSAC-8consistedofCarson-NewmanCollege,CatawbaCollege,ElonCollege,Gardner-WebbUniversity,Lenoir-RhyneCollege,MarsHillCollege,NewberryCollege,andPresbyterianCollege.Dr.Fred Bentley, of Mars Hill College, was named league presidentforitsinauguralyear,byavoteofthememberinstitutions.
In1989,theleague’s15thyearofoperation,theSouthAtlanticConferencebecameacomprehensive,all-sportsconference.ThatyeartheSouthAtlanticConferencesponsored10sports-football,men’sandwomen’sbasketball,baseball,softball,men’ssoccer,volleyball,men’sgolf,men’sandwomen’stennis.Latertheconferencegrewto14championshipsportsbyadding women ‘s soccer (1990), men’s and women’s cross country (1993) and women’s golf (1999).

Brevardfinishedtheseasonwitha1-18record in 2009, and went 0-8 in South AtlanticConferenceplay,buttheTornadosplayed hard throughout the season, nevergivingupandpulledoffthelonewin on the pitch on the BC Soccer Field.
TheTornadosopenedthe2009seasonontheroadonAugust27th,fallingontheroadinCentral,S.C.toSouthernWesleyan,beforereturninghomeonAugust30thfortheirfirsthomegameoftheseason.LedbygoalsbyseniormidfielderIanTownsonandfreshmanforwardChrisLandvik-Larsen,Brevardwentup2-1againstthePfeifferFalcons,butthevisitorswereabletocomebackandwinthegameinovertime,3-2.
TheTornadosnextgamewasinAsheville,N.C.againstNCAADivisionIBigSouthopponentUNCAsheville.Brevardputupafight,recordingfiveshotsinthegamewithtwobyseniorforwardCraigGallowaygoingontarget,buttheTornadoswereunabletoovercometheBulldogs.
AfterreturninghomeandfallingtoCoker onSeptember6th,theTornadoshosted theErskineCollegeFlyingFleetontheBC SoccerField.Sophomoremidfielder RenatoBarbosaputashotinthenet withinthefirst10minutesofthecontest to give the Tornados the early lead. Erskineplacedinagoal10minutes beforethehalftoknotthegameupat 1,butGallowayrespondedwithagoal ofhisownjustbeforethehalftonet the Tornados a 2-1 advantage. Freshman goalkeeperJackShawstoppedfourshots inthesecondhalfandLandvik-Larsen added an insurance goal as the Tornados

Brevarddroppedtheirnextmatch againstNCAADivisionIBigSouth opponentWinthropbeforeopening conference play with a match on September19thagainstCarson- Newman.
The Tornados fought throughout conferenceplayasBarbosaandGalloway eachscoredgoalsinSACcompetitionon theseason,butBrevardwasunableto top any other opponents the rest of the season in ending with a 14-game losing streak.
Duringtheseason,theTornadoswererankedamongtheSACleadersinsavespergame,averaging4.42percontest,whilefinishingninthingoals,assistsandshutouts.
TeamleadersthroughouttheseasonincludedLandvik-LarsenandGallowayastheduoplacedinthreegoalsapieceduringtheseason,leadingfiveplayerswhofoundthenetforBrevard.Townsonaddedapairofgoalsonpenaltykickstojointheduoinmultiplegoalsontheseason.Landvik-Larsen,BarbosaandNathandeCockhadassistsintheseasontohelptheTornadosoffensiveeffort.
Defensively, Shaw led the way in the goal, recording 79 saves on the season, while playing 17 games. Shaw was also the keeperintheTornadoslonewinontheseasonaswell.ThomasKombolplayedinthreegamesaswellbetweenthepipesforCoach Mascaro.
Brevard loses four seniors from this season’ssquad,butwiththeexperiencegainedbytheteam’s15underclassmen,BrevardwillbelookingtobuildonthefoundationsetthisseasonastheycontinuetheirgoalofcompetingintheSouthAtlanticConference.

Sincetakingthehelm,PresidentVanHornhasledcollaborativeefforts to enhance Brevard College’s commitment to engage and educate its studentsinthetheoreticalandappliedliberalarts.
UnderPresidentVanHorn’sleadership,theinstitutioncontinues tochallengestudentstointegrateknowledgeandpracticalexperience sothattheycanbecomecompetent,confidentandresponsible citizens,servingtheirlocalandglobalcommunities. In2004,PresidentVanHornledoneofthemostambitiouscapital campaigns in Brevard College’s history. By the conclusion of the campaign in May 2006, the College exceededits$14milliontargetbymorethan$5million.Funds raised from the campaign were used to provide significantstudentscholarships;increasetheCollege’sendowment;enhancestudentenrollmentandretentionefforts;andrenovatemanyoftheCollege’sfacilities,including residence halls and classrooms.
