Incorporated in 1897, The City of Rossland isnestled in the crater of an ancient volcano at anelevation of 1023 m (3410 ft) making it Canada'sAlpine City.

The town came into existence as the historicalDewdney Trail, starting in modern day Hope BC,then Fort Hope was built next to what is nowRossland. In 1865 road builders were complete-ly unaware of what lay just across from the trailon the slopes of Red Mountain.

It seemed inconceivable that deep mineralstains, evidence of the buried wealth beneath, went unnoticed for almost a quarter of a century.

In the spring of 1890 Joe Moris was hired to doassessment work on the restake Lily May miner-al claim. In July of the same year, he and partnerJoe Bourgeois crossed over the valley to RedMountain where the buried riches were finallydiscovered.

Rossland’s colourful past was a direct reflectionof the cast of characters who came to mine itsresources. By 1897, the population was abustling 7,000 with 42 saloons, 4 banks and 17law firms. There were also four newspapers anda daily train from Spokane.

By 1929 the combined output of the main minesin Rossland totalled almost $165 million dollars.During this explosion of gold mining revenues, bankers around the world christened Rosslandthe “Golden City”.

With the thirties came the Great Depression &most mines had to “pinch out”. With no money toinvest on the costly process of mining, the townshrank to 3000.

Rossland’s heritage as a rough and ready miningtown never hindered its continued growth into athriving town with the current population at 3400.The zeal for outdoor adventure intermingles witha strong affinity for cultural pursuits making thetown a vibrant mixture of interests and still rich incultural history.

Many Rosslanders have been fearlessly preserv-ing this rich heritage past and it can be seen ingroups such as The Gold Fever Follies, a livemusical theatre show held in the restored 1898Miners Hall where you can relive the days whenRossland was in the grip of “Gold Fever”.

A visit to the Rossland Gold Mine Tour andMuseum will take you back in time to whenRossland was once a booming gold mining town. The Wild West had its start in Rossland whenminers flocked to our town to strike it rich andmake their claim. Visit the mine and tour mineshafts that have been preserved for decades.

For the complete story on the area, visit theRossland Museum www.rosslandmuseum.caOr pick up a copy of The Historical HeritageWalking Tour available at the Rossland Chamberof Commerce office and the Museum.
