Kick off your shoes(Or buckle them up)
WELCOME!
ELCOME TO ROSSLAND.
Kick off your shoes, or buckle them up. Whether you want to slow it down or ramp it up,
either attitude works in Rossland, as long as you’re up for doing it Kootenay-style.
This guide is your cheat sheet, our humble at-tempt to describe what gives this town its mojo. Our goal is to paint a picture of what you can ex-pect should you choose to make the journey to our corner of the world. We like to think of this little book as giving the kind of message we’d give to a cousin who was thinking of coming our way for a visit. We’d want that cousin to know what to expect and what not to expect. That’s what family does.
We’re going to share some stories and intro-duce you to a few of the characters you might meet at the post office, in the deli section at Ferraros, on the Motherlode chair, or on the first tee box at Redstone.
Last summer, for example, a group of artists got together in the high alpine of the Sel-kirks for a week of paint-ing, hiking and kinship. They took what would normally be a solitary

pursuit of their art and turned it into a great excuse for getting together and playing in the mountains. That’s pure Kootenay. That’s Rossland for you.
Then there are the wolf packs of renegade trail builders who each summer lug chainsaws and hoe-dads into the surrounding mountains to build new mountain bike trails. No pay, thanks, it’s just for kicks. That’s Rossland — pay it forward by creating some fun that everyone can enjoy.
And there’s our women’s roller derby team, Gnarlie’s Angels. Here’s a bunch of women, mostly moms, who can’t quite get enough thrills and chills from living in Rossland and raising kids.So they buckle up their roller skates and bash away at the Babes of Brutality, or the Dam City Rollers, and almost always win.
Or how about the gang of ex Red Mountain employees who still host snow dances and fun races 20 years after they received their last paycheque from Red. About a year ago — over a jug of beer, or was it two — they thought it would be a good idea to raise a statue of Rossland’s original ski bum, Olaus Jeldness.
Jeldness set a tone for this town that still flourishes 125 years
ROSSLAND FACTS
Incorporated in 1897
Founded by Ross Thompson – hence “Ross”land.
Rossland is situated within an extinct volcano with an elevation of 1023m and is one of Canada’s highest cities.
By 1887 Rossland had a population of 7,000 with 42 saloons, 4 banks and 17 law firms.
The Centre Star, War Eagle and Le Roi mines produced 96% of Rossland’s one and a half million tons of ore to 1903.
In 1929, after forty exciting years of mining gold with a combined output of almost 165 million dollars, the treasure vault on Red Mountain was closed.
Olaus Jeldness was inducted into the Canadian Ski Hall of Fame in 1988.
Voted as Canada’s #1 outdoor town by Explore Magazine, Rossland is widely renowned for its rugged outdoor adventure, small-town warmth and hospitality.
Visit the Rossland Museum for the complete story on the area, or pick up a copy of the Historical Heritage Walking Tour brochure, available at the Rossland Chamber of Commerce and the Museum.
Museum open daily July & aug, 10am–6pm

MEET RICHIERichie Mann started skiing at
the age of four and hasn’t quit yet. Richie can be found on his cross-
country gear on most days dur-ing the winter, either on the groomed trails at Black Jack, or more likely, heating up his grill cheese sandwich, wrapped in tinfoil, over the heat of a woodstove in one of the dozens of little hide-aways in the woods.
Back at the ranch, Richie can be found offering horse-
drawn sleigh rides to kids of all ages at local events and parades.
About this place: “Downtown hasn’t changed
much in 60 years. People stay the same, we have that core. Everyone turns out and chips in. It was how Red (Mountain ski area) and Black Jack (cross country club) got started. Volunteerism!”
Makin’ it work:Richie is a retired rancher
and farrier. Need your horses shod?
Favourite pastime:Playing his fiddle with the

later. This Norwegian miner was passionate about skiing and laid the first turns down Red Mountain. The “Father of Competitive Skiing in Canada” organized the first “Tea Party,” complete with bottles of liquid courage marking the trek up Red, while the trail back down was marked by skis, speed and garage sale carnage. Olaus went on to organize the first Rossland Winter Carnival in 1898.
Maybe peeking into our history is one possible way to explain why Rossland is like it is. As small as we are, big things happen here. The Toronto stock exchange was formed because of the frantic trading in local gold-mine stocks. And the global debate on whether to use AC or DC power was settled in Rossland as they were figuring out how to use hydro to power the mines. Back in those gold-rush days, Rossland had an opera house and four newspa-pers. This was a cosmopolitan hub, despite the hardrock miners and the tough life they led.
It may be that our appetite for fun is simply a part of our history — a part of our DNA.
On your first trip to town, you’ll see on the surface a vast, un-crowded four-season playground. The Ross-land mountain range — with the town itself tucked right in the middle — has fun written all over it. You’re only ever minutes away from skiing, biking, golf or a walk on our maze of trails that radiate in all directions.
And take in our charming down-town core — all four blocks of it. What you won’t find is a gauntlet of big box stores here. Instead, check out our local art, browse the boutique shops, chill in our coffee '

hangouts, or nosh at our fine local eat-eries. On our idyllic main street, what you see is what you get.
But surrounded by Rossland’s natural beauty, if you take just a bit of time and are open to connecting with us, you’ll come to know this place as much for its laid back and welcoming character as you will for our outdoor fun. Don’t be shy about asking a passerby where to explore first. This is your invitation to do just that. We’d love to get to know you.
To get you started, we’re going to introduce you to Rossland’s charms
through the eyes of some of our local characters. We’ll let them tell you about their sense of this place, about the forces that drew them here and the forces that keep them here.
So read on. We hope you enjoy the words, the pictures and the people of Rossland presented in these pages. The hope is that if you see a fit for yourself in our town you’ll make plans to come for a visit. We’d love to show you around. You might end up staying longer, much longer, as so many have done before. n
MEET DEREKHere’s a classic Rossland transplant
story. Derek Frankowski grew up in Re-gina, Saskatchewan, coming to Rossland for a ski trip and to visit family. Ross-land’s gingerbread houses covered with snow made it love at first site, but it was the people who cemented the deal. You can find Derek, his partner, Kari and their four-year-old daughter Odessa skinning to the backcountry cabins at Strawberry pass. That’s getting them started early!
About this place: “The lifestyle here is pretty special.
Most people live here because they want to live here. 95% have chosen to and have sacrificed something to be here. These people are down to earth and there’s a positive energy that everyone in Rossland embodies.”
Making it work:Award-winning Cinema-
tographer and photogra-pher. See lifecycles.com
Favourite pastime:“Fly fishing along
the Columbia and local smaller lakes. The Columbia is an excellent secret that many don’t realize is right there at their doorstep.”

RED MOUNTAIN FACTS
At Red Mountain Resorts, visitors can choose from 88 runs spread across two stellar mountains (Red and Granite) that feature everything from wide-open groomers to steep, powder-filled glades. The abundant snow, friendly staff and locals, and the short lift lines are just a few reasons why guests fall in love with Red. Ski Canada has once again placed Red’s trees, steeps and powder amongst the best in Canada. Along with this, Red’s Silverlode and Paradise areas offer plenty of wide-open groomed runs for beginner and intermediate skiers and snowboarders.
Massive terrain expansion is now underway on Grey Mountain, RED’s 3rd peak, which will add 997 new ski-able acres to the existing 1,685. For winter 2013, a snowcat will shuttle skiers and snowboarders to the summit of Grey. A quad chairlift will be installed summer 2013.
The Rockstar Energy Terrain Park has a variety of rail features including kinks, a rainbow, flat downs, boxes, a battleship, and street rails. New jumps, hips, and XL kicker are in place for this winter.

FORGIVE US for bragging, but Red is foot-for-vertical-foot one of the best powder experi-ences you can get without ponying up for a helicopter. Red itself is 1400 vertical feet of fall line magic. The legendary Cliff will test the strongest skiers, while the other 360 de-grees of Red offers everything in between, including some of the best glade skiing you can imagine from a seven-minute chairlift.
Then there’s Granite Mountain — a whopping 2900 vertical feet of big groomers in Paradise Basin and Granite’s Main Run, and then acres and acres of more mythic tree skiing. Gentle trees, open glades, steep trees, steep chutes. This is a moun-tain that will keep intermediate and advanced skiers giggling for… well, if you ask the retirees, forever. On the lower slopes, the Silverlode chair keeps the beginners happy and their hot chocolate and a warm lodge is just a few minutes away.
But never content to let things rest, the owners of Red have just upped the ante once again by adding Grey Mountain to the in-bounds skiing experience in one of the biggest ski area

terrain expansions anywhere in North America in recent years. No lift on Grey this year, but powder hounds will be able to hitch a cat ride up to test out more powder and more trees.
And speaking of cats, Big Red Cats, just up the road, continues to book solid, offering some 20,000 hectares of more trees and more Kootenay powder.
For those who like to earn their turns, the side country touring in this area keeps ev-ery powder hound happy.
Rossland’s reputation as a skier’s mountain comes honestly. Check out the Wall of Fame in Rafter’s Bar and you’ll get the picture. Olympic gold medalists Nancy Greene and Kerrin Lee-Gartner highlight the ranks of the many national team skiers who earned their stripes here. Today, pick up any ski mag and odds are good that there is some shot of a Rossland-raised free skier collecting some kind of award or some major piece of airtime. For instance, Dane Tudor — IF3’s 2009 Best Male pro skier — makes Rossland his home mountain.
Rossland even has a ski academy. The local high school is now gearing their programs to allow students to get their

MEET SIMONRossland’s reputation as breeding ground for great skiers is nowhere more visible than young Simon Hillis, who just turned 10 this season. The diminutive Simon was forced to ski in two-buckle tod-dler’s boots until this season when he could finally fit into a more high performance boot. Keep your eyes peeled on the mountain for a waist-high muppet on skis who shows perfect form at mach ten, whether he’s carving the groom-ers or in the air.
Simon has been near the top of the free skiing circuit for his age group, competing against kids three and four years older.
Keep an eye on this one.
About this place: Simon says, “It’s great to know everyone in town. I feel very comfortable here.”
Makin’ it work:Bein’ a kid, and making his dad follow him around Powderfields is a full-time job.
Favourite pastime:Skiing powder and mountain
biking in the summer. Duh!
Perfect technique at three years.
Rippin’ it up on Big Red Cats terrain.
education while spending much of their days being coached in alpine racing, snowboarding, free skiing or Nordic skiing.
But for the rest of us mere mortal skiers who come to ski or ride in Rossland, the first thing you’ll notice — after you quit staring up at all those trees and terrain - is that this place still has a club feel. You’ll see ski moms or ski dads wrestling their three-year-olds into their helmets and boots, priming them early for life in the mountains. Keep on the lookout for these young apprentices as they weave through the trees or huck a little air with parents in tow. Toddler huckers. Daddy huckers. Mother huck-ers. You get the picture.
At the other end of the age spectrum, you’ll see a sizeable retirement crowd, fixtures on the slope who put in 100-day ski seasons as faith-fully as all of the itinerant ski bums who move to town, exist on pasta and homebrew, and live for their turns.
There’s some good ski areas out there, and even a few great ones. We like to think ours fits nicely into the second category. But with the added charms of our town and its people, it’s one of a kind. n

OUNTAIN BIK-ING has become as much a way of life around here in summer as skiing is in winter. Long before the ski lifts stop turning, the shovels come out to clear the snow off a trail on the south end of town appropriately known as Spring Cleaning. All the young dudes and Bettys are itching to start the new season before the winter one has even finished.
The network of trails that radiate out of Rossland’s town centre have been built and maintained by a vari-ety of people networks. On the struc-tured side of that equation, our local trails society is constantly building, signing and maintaining trails. On the down low, local chainsaw gangs are always working on some new pet project trail, or constructing another bridge, or skinny, or launch pad.
MEET MIKEMike Hopkins — pro mountain bike rider. If Mike isn’t being filmed in some far away exoticlocale (last seen heading to New Zealand) he’shoning his riding skills around his hometown of Rossland.
About this place: “It is like a vacation every day around here. Seriously — it’s a crazy town with so many activities and sports at your fingertips. The active lifestyle sets Rossland apart, makes it beyond special. I miss the hometown atmosphere when I’m on the road. I walk down the street and there are so many conversations I have within a block… everyone knows everyone. The coffee shops are the social hubs for the community for sure!.”
Makin’ it work:Professional mountain biker.
Favourite pastime: “Spring and fall are really cool because you can ski and bike in one day! Summer is rad — wake up, get a coffee and ride. In the summers Nancy Greene lake is pretty cool. Love the rope swing.”

Word spreads like wildfire, and new trails like Larch Trail or SuperMegaDeath (which is anything but) suddenly become the talk of the town.
If you’re just earning your mountain biking chops (or feeling lazy) take a flat cruise on the old railgrade. On the other end of the scale, tackle the Seven Summits — a 30 km International Mountain Bike Association “epic” where a solid bike, solid legs, good bike skills and extra water are compulsory.
Biking around Rossland offers countless options and combinations of trails fit for every rider and every style of
riding. The town sits in the exact middle of things, so you’re never far from that well-earned bever-age at the end of your ride.
Piece of advice. Don’t be shy about asking for advice or directions. With so many options and junctions, it’s easy to get turned around, despite the signage. n

The Kootenay Columbia Trail Society’s extensive trail network spans 170 km, and includes Rossland’s “urban trails” that complement the network.
The Seven Summits trail was awarded the 2007 “Trail of the Year” by Bike Magazine. Seven Summits, one of only 36 IMBA “Epic” rated trails, is a 30.4 km ridge ride that passes within a half hour ascent of seven major peaks in the Rossland area.
Rossland has hosted several mountain biking races, includ-ing the Rossland Fat Tire Festival, the Rubberhead, and a Noram.

THE REDSTONE RESORT course cradles the lower elevations of town while framing fan-tastic views of Red Mountain and the rest of the Rossland
range to the north. Should you play your three-wood on this teeshot, or just take pictures for a while. Why not do both?
An integral part of Rossland for generations, the beautiful old nine-hole course set within a rich, tree-filled valley was run as the Rossland Trail Country Club for many years. But in re-cent years, it has been transformed into Redstone Resort — a stunning 18-hole mountain track. Canada’s renowned course designer Les Furber made this
his first signature golf course. This place isn’t just scenic. It’s a course where both strategists and heroes can do their thing.
Every hole is a completely different golfing experience and many of the tee boxes are elevated. Each one offers a different postcard view of the surround-ing peaks. The big greens are friendly, but the ravines, deep bunkers and roll-ing terrain will keep any golfer honest.
Choose your tees carefully, especially the first time. The mountain air and elevated tees will have your shot flying further than usual, but the back tees (6,863 yards) on this par-72 layout are definitely for the scratch handicappers and professionals.
Join the locals for a post-round beverage in the classic log clubhouse.
Each Hole a New Experience
REDSTONE FACTS
In 2010 Redstone Resort was selected by SCOREgolf as one of its top five new golf courses in the country.
The original nine hole course at Red-stone was built in 1927.
Redstone is now a signature Les Furber design 18-hole championship course.
Cominco built the original nine hole course in 1927 as well as the original clubhouse still in use today.

You can’t manufacture the kind of history that has been made there over the years.
Another option just 10 minutes away from Redstone is Birchbank. Located above the Columbia River, golfers will ap-preciate its classic serenity and expansive, walkable fairways. Keep an eye out for mountain
goats on the rock bluff across the river.
There are many other beauti-ful courses scattered through-out the region, stretching from Grand Forks and Christina Lake in the west, through to Castlegar and to Nelson and Balfour in the east. It is simply a golfer’s paradise! n
MEET BILL & LORILori and Bill Craig were on tour through Southern B.C. in a bor-rowed motorhome when they stumbled onto Rossland. They knew within the first hour they had found their new home.
About this place: “It’s the people. We end up chatting to everyone and ev-eryone gets to know everyone. The Rossland lifestyle has a lot to do with that sense of health and fitness. But when we first arrived it was so friendly, and felt so safe. We knew this was where we wanted to bring up our kids.”
Makin’ it work:Today, Lori runs their gym, Better Life Fitness Centre, while Bill sells real estate.
Favourite pastime:“For us it’s golfing! We love how Redstone is right in town and how the new 18 has changed golfing here to the max. And then in the winter we put our snowshoes on.”

IN THE WINTER, the buzz around skiing is pal-pable, but in the summer, there’s a sweet, laid-back vibe that whispers in your ear that your list of to-dos or must-sees can wait until tomorrow, or the next day.
By late April and early May, the trails are usually snow free. People are walking their dogs or strolling deep in conversation. An occasional jogger might pass you by, but there’s a whole world out there telling you to simply head out the door and go for a walkabout. In a half hour, you can be on top of KC mountain, staring down on Rossland’s brightly coloured roofs, 360-de-gree panoramas of the Rossland Range, and the mighty Columbia river valley.
Back in town, grab a heritage map and have a gander at some of our fine old buildings. Or hit the farmers’ market for some tasty treats and some good people watching. Check out the Rossland Museum for more of how this town grew into itself.
Towards June, the alpine calls the more adventur-ous. Take a day to hike to Old Glory or along the Seven Summits. By July the huckleberries are showing their colours. Within a few minutes of leaving town you can be competing with the bears for this delicious fruit. (I’d tell you just where to go for the motherlode of hucks, but then I’d have to kill ya. Sorry, you’re on your own here.)
When the weather heats up you can take refuge with a dip in Nancy Greene Lake. Or find your cool in the dark shadows of another walk in the woods. Or cast your gaze down to the Columbia River – one of the premium trout streams in North America.
Ahh, summer in Ross-land. It’s all good. n

WHILE ROSSLAND’S alpine skiing gets most of the sexy press around here, skinny-ski skiers are quick to give a sly smile when asked what ski-ing around
here means to them. The Black Jack trail system — located right across the road from its big cousin Red — is every bit as impressive in its own right. Black Jack has 40 kilometres of groomed skating and classic trails with three warming huts spread along the way. There’s a variety of begin-ner, intermediate and expert terrain, the grooming is pro-style, and the folks you’ll meet will remind you once again that you’re in a special part of the world.
How does a moonlight ski and fondue sound to you? “Le Petit Fromage” is yet another weird and wonderful ex-ample of how people around here mix snow and people for an altogether good time.
The Castlegar Nordic Club, just a few more kilometres up the road from Rossland, grooms 45 km of tracks. These trails are a bit flatter and geared more to classic skiers than Black Jack’s mix of classic and skating, but every bit as special.
And for those growing numbers of skiers taking up light touring, Strawberry Pass is seeing more and more people wandering around on their “bush skis.” Fish scales for climbing, a bit of shape for turning, these skis are opening up a whole new world of low impact, low angle skiing. Skiers with a decent map or a bit of local knowledge (just ask) will help you sniff out the best skiing and the funky warming huts that pepper the landscape. It’s around these cookstoves that you can learn the all-important life skills of how to light a fire with one match, and then properly cook a cheese sandwich in tinfoil. n

ROSSLAND’S REPUTATION for being one big play-ground is well deserved, but
the arts scene in this town is making a good case for the ar-gument that we are more than just ski wax and knobby tires.
An emerging cadre of young Rossland filmmakers is figuring out how to com-bine passion for the outdoors with creative flair. Lifecycles — a film by Rosslanders Derek Frankowski and Ryan Gibb — is a stunning example how art mimics mountain bike life.
The annual Rossland Mountain Film Festival, held in November showcases filmmakers and multi-media presentations.
On the stage, you can take in summer stock theatre with a historical twist with the Gold Fever Follies. The live musical theatre show has been held in the restored 1898 Miners’ Hall during July and August since 1987. This lively show brings to life stories from Rossland’s rich gold mining history. Great for the whole family!
Or you can catch the production that the Rossland Light Opera Players, British Columbia’s oldest amateur musical theatre group, stages each winter.
The Council for Arts and Culture is Rossland’s pipeline for local culture vultures. Live music and theatre make up their Performance Series, all of which make the Miners’ Hall the go-to place through-out the year. And on the third Sunday of every month you can take in the Joe Hill Coffee house, where local talent each get their ten minutes at the mic. The impressive acts range from local rock stars to the Boomtown Garter Girls, whose can-can dance has been going strong for over 30 years.
The beautiful new gallery in the old Bank of Montreal building is now home to rotating art exhibitions, rang-ing from sculpture to painting to fabric to graffiti art.
And in the summer, the Rossland Mountain Mar-ket creates a Thursday streetscape of live music, artists and artisans, fresh local produce and yummy treats. n
Film & TheatreArt & MusicMEET STEPHANIEStephanie Gauvin is but one of a number of rising stars in our visual art scene whose work you can find in local galleries and coffee shops. As handy on skis or on a bike as she is with acrylics, Stephanie divides her time between playing in the great outdoors, raising her kids, and making brilliant paintings of our local landscapes.
About this place: “Rossland is a place of unpretentiousness and the people of Ross-land embody this. I love knowing everyone. It feels like you can trust people. Everything is in our backyard, and close by.”
Makin’ it work:Professional artist and mom of two kids who is an avid mountain biker and skier. It’s a great big life.

More and more “nomadic entrepreneurs” are setting up their home offices in Rossland, drawn by the comparatively low cost of housing, and the high quality of life.
Meet Paula and Kieren Gaul — owner operators of Big Red Cats cat skiing.
“We met a friend from Kieren’s younger ski rac-ing days and she told us that Rossland had the best ski ter-rain she’d ever seen.“
“It was stories from other parents that drew us here too. That the kids at the high school have a really positive attitude about school and each other. I wanted to raise my kids in a town with a culture like that.”
Big Red Cats has grown into one of western Canada’s
biggest cat skiing operations, while at the same time, provid-ing the Gauls with a great way to make it work for them and their children.
If you’re thinking of trans-forming your life, make your first stop in Rossland at the Rossland Chamber of Com-merce. They can help you with information about the commu-nity and starting up a business in our area.
Members of the Rossland Chamber have access to a business service centre con-veniently located downtown. Marketing, advertising and a connection to the community are just some of the benefits of membership. The Chamber welcomes you to drop by for any information or assistance. Email them at [email protected] or find the members’ directory at www.rossland.com. n
