P.S.

A WORLD-CLASS SKI DESTINATION AND SECRET SUMMER GETAWAYWhen it comes to year-round, family-friendly fun, Steamboat Springs, Colorado, is unlike any other destination. The town boasts world-class skiing in the winter and a plethora of summer activities, including hiking and fishing. Whatever season you come, you’re sure to fall in love with the area’s natural beauty and the welcoming locals, just as I have.

Steamboat Springs is best known for its winter skiing. In fact, Steamboat is sometimes referred to as “Ski Town USA,” and it has produced more winter Olympians than any other town in America.

What few visitors know is that Steamboat Springs actually started as a summer resort town in the early 20th century. Today, the warmer months are still one of the best times to visit. It’s also the perfect season to appreciate the ‘Boat’s western heritage—there’s a rodeo every weekend!

MY TOP RECOMMENDATIONS BY SEASONAs a Steamboat local, I’m often asked to share my top recommendations for activities, restaurants, and events. Of course, there are more things to do than I can possibly include in a single conversation or email. That’s why I’ve created this guide—to share some of my favorite insider’s tips with you.

Whether you book your lodging with us or not, I hope you find this guide to be useful as you plan your trip to Steamboat Springs. I’ve included my favorite winter and summer recommendations, plus some year-round activities you’re sure to love and a calendar of local events.

I hope your time in Steamboat Springs becomes one of your most treasured memories!

STEAMBOAT SKI RESORTThe mountain is the hub of town during the Winter months and can entertain your entire family for the whole week! The base area is where the gondola is located, ski school for your kids, several rental shops and numerous dining and shopping establishments. www.Steamboat.com • (970) 879-61112305 Mt Werner Cir, Steamboat Springs, CO 80487

First tracks!

The historic More Barn

Steamboat Springs is the quintessential winter destination. With close to 3,000 acres of skiable terrain, 3,668 feet of vertical, 165 named trails and the best tree skiing in the States, you will be hard pressed to find any reasons why you should not visit Steamboat for your winter vacation. I also have to add that our snow is pretty special, so special that the resort trademarked a term that describes the powder that falls here as some of the lightest and driest you will ever ski (Hint: pop the bubbly)! So grab your skis and snowboards and hit the slopes of the Steamboat Ski Resort.

MY FAVORITE RUNSI am not going to give out all my secret stashes and I also realize that not everyone wants to ski the trees or be stuck on some double black diamond run scared out of their pants. So I am going to give you 3 great runs that include a green, blue and black.

GREEN RUN - SUNDIALIf you are looking for an easy rolling green run that is always groomed, not steep and still allows the wind to blow through your hair, I would head over to what we call Wally World! There is a green run off the Sunshine lift called Sundial. Take a few runs on that and you will be totally ok breaking out to a few of the other blue runs that surround it (Tomahawk being the next in line), all are mellow rolling groomers, but tons of fun!

BLUE/BLACK RUN - TWILIGHTActually this run is a Black, but the factor that makes it a black run is due to the aspen trees that you have to ski between. If you are comfortable skiing trees that are well spaced, and there was new snow in the last couple of days, definitely add this one to your to do list. Skiing the trees on a powder day reminds me of the original Star Wars movie when Luke Skywalker was flying his X-wing fighter, yes it is that cool! You can reach this run by taking Sundown Express over to three o’ clock.

BLACK RUN - NORTH ST. PATSThis is actually a double black, the face of the run is not that long, but it is steep. You also have to pop your skis off and walk up to the radio towers above the Morningside Lift to get to it. If you time it right, the snow can be pretty deep in here, but please be careful of the tree wells and also some large rock outcroppings. Those are a few of the other reasons why it is a double black. So ski with a buddy and wear a helmet if you are heading here.

DISCOUNT LIFT TICKETSBecause these deals are always changing, please visit our website at www.SteamboatVacationRentals.net for the latest updates. You can also see our “Top 10 List” for the best ways to get discounted lift tickets here as well. Remember that Steamboat’s Kids Ski Free program allows 1 child 12 and under to ski free with an adult 5 day lift ticket purchase.

NIGHT SKIING & RIDINGFor this first time in Steamboat (2013/14), the resort is offering night skiing and riding Thursdays – Sunday from 5:30pm – 8:30pm. There will be over 1,100 vertical feet of terrain on 5 different runs that are accessed via the Christie Peak Express Lift. Purchase your tickets at least 7 days in advance and adults are only $20, teens $10 and children $5.

BEST SKI & SNOWBOARD RENTAL SHOPLocated about 1 mile off the base of the ski area is Ski Haus, which I think is the best ski and snowboard rental shop in town. They carry great gear, have good pricing and will even shuttle you between your condo and their shop to outfit you with all your rental equipment. If you have kids, don’t forget to take advantage of the kids rent free program when an adult rents equipment for 5 or more days. If you reserve your rentals with Ski Haus through www.SteamboatVacationRentals.net, you can also save an additional 15%. www.skihaussteamboat.com • (970) 879-03851457 Pine Grove Rd, Steamboat Springs, CO 80487

BEST APRÈS SKI BARI am going to give you two locations that are great for enjoying a cocktail or two after a day on the slopes. Both of these bars are located at the base of the ski resort, so you can belly up the bar in ski boots, no questions asked. The first is Slopeside Grill which is located just above the base of the ski area on skier’s right in Ski Time Square. This is a great spot that is ski in/out, family friendly and serves great pizza and bar food. This is a great local hangout on sunny days! In the spring time they even have an outdoor bar carved out of ice. The second spot is the Umbrella Bar located outside the Bear River bar in Gondola Square. The deck here has a great view of the slopes and also the new Steamboat Stage for any live music taking place during the Bud Light Rocks the Boat Free Concert series.www.slopesidegrill.com • (970) 879-0385 1855 Ski Time Square Dr, Steamboat Spgs, CO 80487www.steamboat.com • (970) 871-51502300 Mount Werner Cir Steamboat Springs, CO 80487

WINTER ACTIVITIESSLEIGH RIDESThere are a few options for sleigh rides in and around Steamboat. The first option you have is taking the snow-cat driven sleigh ride from the top of the Gondola to Ragnars for a 5 course Scandinavian dinner. If you are looking for a sleigh ride being pulled by actual horses (Belgians) and not so frou-frou, the second option is heading out to Saddleback Ranch, which is west of town. They have a couple different options that include a sleigh ride and hot chocolate at the Longhorn Lodge or also an option with Dinner. Saddleback Ranch is definitely more “Steamboat” in my opinion and if you have kids in your party, I would go this route!Ski Resort Sleigh Rides: www.steamboat.com • (970) 879-61112305 Mt Werner Cir, Steamboat Springs, CO 80487Saddle Back Ranch: www.saddlebackranch.net • (970) 879-371137350 County Road 179, Steamboat Springs, CO 80487

WINTER SNOW TUBINGIf your legs need a break from the slopes, but you are still looking for that rush of excitement, take the family snow tubing! There are two great locations in Steamboat for winter tubing:

HOWELSEN HILL - located in downtown Steamboat Springs next to the Nordic jumps. All you have to do is ride the magic carpet to the top, jump on your tube and let gravity take you down the course. Children are not allowed to ride on laps, and helmets are recommended. www.tubingsteamboat.com • (970) 819-8010 845 Howelsen Parkway Steamboat Springs 80487

SADDLEBACK RANCH - head out to a real Western Ranch and hit the Yee-haw Tubing Hill. The hill is groomed and includes a state of the art tube-tow system that pulls you and your tube back to top. Warm up at the Longhorn Lodge between runs with a bite to eat and a cup of hot chocolate. They provide free transportation via a shuttle that picks you up at the Gondola transit center. www.saddlebackranch.net • (970) 879-371137350 County Road 179, Steamboat Springs, CO 80487

COCA-COLA ADVENTURE ZONELet’s face it, if you have kids in tow, they are not always going to want to ski all day during your vacation. One great activity at the base of the Ski Resort that will help keep them happy is The Coca-Cola Adventure Zone. This is where the Slingshot Bungee Jump Trampoline helps save the day and makes Mom and Dad the hero! www.steamboat.com • (970) 879-61112305 Mt Werner Cir, Steamboat Springs, CO 80487

HORSEBACK RIDINGOften thought of as a summertime activity this is another great option for taking a break from the slopes and still enjoying Mother Nature. Del’s Triangle 3 Ranch has been operating a ranch in the valley for 6 generations and have been outfitting and riding horses through Mt Zirkel Wilderness area since 1962. They are located just past the town of Clark which is 16 miles north of town. They also provide a shuttle service from the Gondola transit center.www.steamboathorses.com • (970) 879-349555675 County Road 62, Clark, CO 80428

SNOW BUDDY DOG SLED TOURSExperience the thrill of dog sledding firsthand as you race past white-capped trees and fields of freshly fallen snow. Learn to mush in a full day of adventure, or take one of the half-day tours through the wilderness. Either way, you’ll leave with warm memories and adorable photos of you with the team.www.snowbuddydogsledtours.com • (970) 291-1114Oak Creek, CO 80467

SNOWSHOEINGSnowshoeing is easier than it looks, and it’s a low-key way to explore the local trails. Steamboat Ski Resort has a snowshoeing area by the gondola, but more adventurous souls will want to head to Fish Creek Falls or Emerald Mountain. My personal favorite spot would be heading up to the west summit of Rabbit Ears Pass and hiking on the A and B loops. You can rent any gear you might need at Ski Haus.

NORDIC SKIINGSteamboat boasts numerous Nordic ski tracks, including something for every age and ability level. The Steamboat Ski Touring Center, Lake Catamount Touring Center, and Howelsen Hill Nordic Center are the most popular.www.steamboatxcski.org • (970) 879-8180

GILPIN LAKE - Wind through aspen groves and past stately pine trees until you reach this untouched alpine lake, which affords sweeping views of the Sawtooth Range. The moderate-level hike is nine miles roundtrip. You can reach the trailhead by taking Elk River Road (County Road 129) 18 miles to Seedhouse Road (NFSR 400; also CR 64), where you’ll turn right and drive another 11 miles to the Slavonia trailhead parking area. FISH CREEK FALLS - The 283-foot cascades are a favorite with tourists and locals alike. The falls are only a quarter of a mile from the road, but there are plenty of options for extending your hike, including a six-mile route to Long Lake and a half-mile overlook trail. Head east on Lincoln Avenue, turn left on Third Street, and then take a right on Fish Creek Falls Road. You’ll find a parking area three miles further; the Forest Service charges $5 per vehicle per day.

DEVIL’S CAUSEWAY - Looking for a more challenging hike? The land bridge is only three miles from the trailhead, but getting there will leave you breathless—both from the exertion and the views. Take Routt County Road 7 from downtown Yampa until it ends nearly 17 miles later and becomes Forest Service Road 900. Drive until you reach the parking lot on the north end of Stillwater Reservoir. This trail is strictly for hikers.

HOWELSEN HILL/EMERALD MOUNTAIN - Located within walking distance of downtown Steamboat, the Emerald Mountain area or Howelsen Hill, boasts over 4,000 acres of public land and 24 miles of trails with exceptional views of the valley.

Hiking on the_____

While winter provides endless amounts of family fun, summers in Steamboat are an even better time to visit. With fewer crowds, an abundance of outdoor activities and fresh mountain air – you will find plenty to do for everyone. Check out our favorite and highly recommended summertime activities in ‘The Boat’

HIKING TRAILSVisitors can explore numerous hiking trails in the area, including the ones detailed below. Many of the trailheads are only a few blocks from town.

BIKING TRAILSSteamboat has a bike trail for every age and skill level. Take a leisurely ride with the family or challenge yourself on one of the many local mountain bike trails. Visit www.steamboatbiketown.com for up-to-date trail conditions, maps, reviews and more.

SUMMER ACTIVITIES

FAMILY RIDES ON THE YAMPA RIVER CORE TRAIL - Suitable for kids and adults alike, this paved, seven-mile trail follows the Yampa River through downtown Steamboat Springs and past groves of cottonwood, until you reach Bear River Park. It’s the perfect place for a picnic, and you’ll find several excellent fishing holes along the way. The trail begins at Dougherty Road.

MOUNTAIN BIKING AT HOWELSEN HILL/EMERALD MOUNTAIN - The mountain is a bikers dream—it includes over 24 miles of single track. The two-mile Quarry Loop is a favorite; it is a short climb of moderate difficulty. Looking for a longer intermediate excursion? My personal favorite Emerald Mountain ride is looping the Beall and Ridge Trails together with the front side of Emerald, so you get over 20+ miles of exceptional single track! Click here for a map and directions: www.steamboatbiketown.com845 Howelsen Parkway Steamboat Springs, CO 80487

MOUNTAIN BIKING AT THE STEAMBOAT SKI AREA - The resort’s gondola makes mountain biking a breeze. Simply purchase a ticket for the lift, and both you and your bike will be transported up the mountain. With the hard part done, you will just need to discover the most thrilling way to get down. The ski resort boasts over 50 miles of trails, all with varying ability levels and viewpoints. www.steamboat.com • (970) 879-61112305 Mt Werner Cir, Steamboat Springs, CO 80487

TUBINGEscape the summer heat by tubing down the Yampa River. I recommend starting at the 5th Street Bridge and exiting the river approximately one hour later at the James Brown Bridge or the Transit Center. You can typically rent tubes and shuttles beginning in June, when the river flow has dropped to a safe level. www.backdoorsports.com • (970) 879-6249841 Yampa St, Steamboat Springs, CO 80487

IN TOWN - The Yampa River passes right through town and you’ll find excellent fishing spots all along the way. There are approximately four miles of public catch-and-release water, making it easy to ski during the morning and fish in the afternoon!

SARVIS CREEK STATE WILDLIFE AREA - The secluded, 311-acre wildlife area is located south of the Stagecoach Reservoir and is home to both brown and rainbow trout.

CHRISTINA STATE WILDLIFE AREA - The Elk River passes through here, making it a prime spot for trout fishing. The wildlife area also offers access to the Mad Creek Trail, which leads into the Routt National Forest and Mount Zirkel Wilderness Area.

CHUCK LEWIS STATE WILDLIFE AREA - The area includes a 50-acre manmade pond that’s brimming with pike. You can also fish the Yampa River, which runs through the wildlife area.

SUMMIT AND JONAH LAKES - By far my favorite fishing spots! These two lakes are hidden away on Buffalo Pass. You can drive to Summit Lake, but the real gem is Jonah Lake, which is only a one-quarter of a mile away. This is along the continental divide, so the views are just as good as the fishing. The trail is unmarked, but you can find detailed directions in Diane White-Crane’s popular book, Hiking the ‘Boat II.

YEAR-ROUND FUNRESTAURANTSWhen it comes to eating out, these local favorites are sure to please. From barbecue joints to sushi bars, Steamboat has something for every palate.

FRESHIE’S - This family-friendly eatery serves up fresh, wholesome breakfast fare, including epic, homemade cinnamon rolls that are too big not to share. Everything on the menu is mouth-wateringly good, but the breakfast croissant sandwiches are our favorite.www.freshiessteamboat.com • (970) 879-8099 595 S. Lincoln Ave. Steamboat Springs, CO 80487

DOUBLE Z BAR & B - The restaurant may be small, but its barbecue ribs and French fries were voted best by “Best of the Boat” for a reason. The pork sandwich is equally good, especially when stacked with crispy French fries. In the summer, take your meal out on the deck, which overlooks Howelsen Hill and the Yampa River.www.doublezbbq.com • (970) 879-08491124 Yampa Street, Steamboat Springs CO 80487

MAZZOLA’S - This Italian diner is known for its pizza and calzones, which are made to order. While you’re waiting, indulge in a baked mushroom appetizer and a glass of Chianti.www.mazzolas.com • (970) 879-2405917 Lincoln Ave. Steamboat Springs, CO 80487

SAKE2U - Munch on edamame and crab rangoon as the sushi chef prepares your super-fresh sushi rolls. The Steamboat Crunch is by far the best. Happy Hour runs from 5 pm to 6 pm each day.www.sake2u.com • (970) 870-1019609 Yampa Street, Steamboat Springs CO 80487

FIESTA JALISCO - There are a few options for Mexican food in town, but if you are looking for authentic food from across the border, you need to stop at Fiesta Jalisco. The family that operates this restaurant knows what it takes to be successful in a Colorado ski town. My favorite dish is the Camarones Mexicanos, after the complimentary chips and salsa and a large margarita!www.fiestajalisco.net • (970) 871-6999445 Anglers Drive, Steamboat Springs CO 80487

What’s happening this month in Steamboat Springs? Check out our handy calendar for upcoming events.

WINTERDecember - March

CALENDAR OF EVENTS

TORCHLIGHT PARADE AND FIREWORKS DISPLAYNew Year’s EveThe Steamboat Ski Resort puts on a spectacular fireworks and torchlight parade show for both visitors and locals to enjoy. There are a few of these events throughout the year, with the biggest even taking place on New Year’s Eve. The best area for viewing these events is at the base of Ski Resort along the new promenade.

ANNUAL BUD LIGHT COWBOY DOWNHILLMid JanuaryThis event coincides with National Western Stock Show in Denver and brings up the Pro Rodeo stars to Steamboat for a ski rodeo. You get to watch a bunch of bronco busting cowboys wear ski boots with leather chaps and while racing down the ski course. After the race ends, there is also a Free Bud Light Rocks the Boat Concert Series event at the Gondola stage.

WINTER CARNIVALFirst week in FebruaryThis annual celebration has been taking place for over 100+ years and embraces both Steamboat’s western heritage as well as our love for winter sports. The main street in town is shut down, so kids can be pulled on skis behind horses, adults partake in high speed shovel races and the high school band leads the parade through town while wearing skis! The week’s events are capped off with the Lighted Man at the Night Show Extravaganza.

BUD LIGHT ROCKS THE BOAT FREE CONCERTSJanuary - AprilNothing beats ending a day on the slopes with a Free Concert that takes place right at the base of the gondola. There is also the new Steamboat stage in Gondola square surrounded by heated pavers and plenty of seating at the Bear River Deck. Past performances for the Bud Light Free Concerts series have included Rusted Root, Big Head Todd and the Monsters, Jeff Austin (YMSB), North Mississippi All Stars, Robert Randolph and the Family Band and the Young Dubliners.

There is also a limited number of handcrafted-by-the-vendor arts and crafts.

FREE SUMMER CONCERT SERIESJune - AugustIf you can’t tell, one of the best things about living year round in Steamboat is that we get the opportunity to see a lot of free concerts! It is more like a town meeting with nothing on the agenda, so everyone is excited to relax and enjoy the tunes. The Free Summer Concert series takes place at either Howelsen Hill in downtown or at the base of the Steamboat Ski Resort in Gondola square. There are food vendors, beer sales and kids’ activities as well. ABOUT BRAD LUTH AND STEAMBOAT VACATION RENTALS

According to legend, in the early 19th century, a Ute tribal leader “cursed” the Yampa Valley, saying that those who visited the area would never be able to leave. Apparently, we’re under the valley’s spell.

We didn’t originally intend to live full-time in Steamboat Springs, but as we vacationed here season after season, we fell so in love with the area that we eventually decided to become year-round residents.

Today, we own a few vacation rental properties in Steamboat, and we manage several others for out-of-town owners. Whether you’re a couple on a romantic getaway or a large family gathering, we have a property that is perfectly suited for your needs.

The great thing about renting from a locally-run property management company is that you have a Steamboat local to count on (via phone or at your doorstep). You have a local friend who will help ensure your vacation is as carefree as possible for you and

your family. We are also more than happy to provide input towards the little things you wonder about when planning your vacation to Steamboat Springs. Whether you are looking for the best restaurants in town, a secluded place to fish, scenic mountain bike trails, or those leftover powder stashes, we can definitely give you a local’s perspective.

Feel free to contact me, Brad Luth, at (800) 421-3150 if you have any questions while planning your trip to Steamboat Springs. You can also visit www.steamboatvacationrentals.net for additional area information and to view our available vacation rental properties.
