WHAT MS?Multiple sclerosis, or MS, is a chronic disease

of the central nervous system. It is as unique as

the individual who has it, causing unpredictable

symptoms ranging from numbness and tingling to

blindness and paralysis. At least a million

Americans live with MS: the estimated 400,000

women, men and children who have it, and all

those it affects – their families, friends,

colleagues and community.

For more than 60 years, families affected by MS

have turned to the National MS Society for

information and support. The Pacific South Coast

Chapter provides programs and services for the

45,500 people affected in Orange, San Diego and

Imperial counties. Our programs include:

Corporate Participation Strengthens the Workplace and CommunityIt’s no coincidence that some of our region’s most successful companies support Walk MS by walking, volunteering or sponsorship of the

event. Participation in community events offer a range of workplace benefits that can translate into increased employee productivity and

ultimately impact your bottom line. In addition to helping important causes, community events can serve as an extension of the

workplace for employees by fostering teamwork, communication, camaraderie and pride in their company. Participating CEOs agree that

getting involved with Walk MS and other National MS Society fundraising events has helped improve employee productivity and even

boost retention rates. San Diego County Credit Union, Sycuan Resort & Casino, Walmart, Intuit, Provide Commerce, Qualcomm, ROEL

Construction, Frazee Paint & Wallcovering, HSBC Auto Finance, and Websense are just a few of the area’s well-known companies

participating this year. Form a team for your company today at MSwalk.com!

If you’ve ever been greeted by a friendly associate at your local

Walmart, you understand the power of positive morale. When

associates are proud of their company and given opportunities to feel

a part of something meaningful, positive morale ignites across the

company, improves customers’ experience and ultimately impacts the

bottom line.

Steve Markey, District

Manager at Walmart, sees

a big boost in morale each

year when Team Walmart

participates in their lo-

cal Walk MS. He says, “The event gives associates a real feeling

of community. Not only are they helping a great cause, but also

coming together with fellow associates to reach a common goal.”

Volunteering can also serve as an extension of the workplace by

promoting desirable behaviors such as teamwork, dedication

and enthusiasm.

As a retail business, Walmart encourages associates to get involved

with the community that is home to its many shoppers. This has

propelled Team Walmart to participate in Walk MS for five years in a

row. In fact, last year they were the largest team at the Carlsbad

location last year with 363 members.

Through a strong sense of giving and a corporate matching program,

Walmart raised an incredible $16,328 last year alone, which helps

research a cure for MS. “When it comes to helping the community and

great causes such as MS,

Walmart associates are

self-starters,” says Steve.

The widespread

volunteerism in the

company’s fundraising

events such as breakfasts

and barbeques leading up to the Walk certainly demonstrates this.

While Walmart’s slogan may be “Save money. Live better.”, members

of Walk MS Team Walmart know first-hand why raising money for

others in need helps them live better.

Lauren’s Crew

After waking up one morning with blurred vision, Lauren Doughtery saw anoptometrist who misdiagnosed her with something she couldn’t even pronounce. She

had also seen a chiropractor for monthsto treat what she thought was a seriesof pinched nerves. Finally, when anophthalmologist identified an inflamedoptic nerve—a common first symptom ofmultiple sclerosis (MS)—she wasdiagnosed with MS shortly thereafterat age 26.

That was seven years ago and todayLauren feels fortunate to have relativelymoderate symptoms such as fatigue andnumbness. Although these symptomsare often invisible to others, they havea tremendous impact on her life. Laurenis determined to raise awareness aboutMS. Her goal is to help others avoid thewinding road she took to diagnosis andfurther research.

Lauren’s uplifting drive illustrates thewidespread difference that just oneindividual can make. Today, she is a topfundraiser for Walk MS joined by nearly

30 walkers from all corners of her life including family, friends, coworkers and even herdog, Bartlett. About half of Lauren’s Crew are her coworkers from Red Door Interactive—a local award-winning Internet presence management agency. Lauren’s efforts haveeven reached a national level through a friend that walks on her behalf in the ChicagoWalk MS, and a coworker’s mother with MS who flies in from New Jersey to participatewith Lauren’s Crew.

Personally, Walk MS has allowed Lauren to build a support network, stay educated onthe disease and control stress, which is crucial to managing her symptoms. She said,“In my lifetime, I foresee a cure or at least a way to stop the progression of MS, which iswhy the Walk is so important.”

“The Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation is one rich with history and tradition, and for thousands of years has been committed to building strong communities,”Sycuan Tribal Chairman Daniel J. Tucker says. Accordingly, the leaders of Sycuanwork to foster an environment that encourages community involvement andenables their employees and tribal members to represent Sycuan in all areas oflife, whether it be at work, at home or amid their communities.

It is this long-standingtradition of buildingcommunities and helpingindividuals within thosecommunities that leadsSycuan to be a Walk MSsponsor, for eight yearsrunning. In addition tosponsorship, Sycuan alsoassembles a team ofwalkers with 2010 markingthe fourth yearof participation.

Involvement among Sycuanteam members has grownwith each Walk and nowmore than 150 teammembers excitedlyanticipate the event eachyear. Walkers come fromevery segment of Sycuanincluding tribal members, individuals from their firedepartment, the pokerdepartment, marketing, housekeeping and the tribal clinic, just to name a few areas. The Walk enables thisdiverse group to meet together and get to know one another, creating anatmosphere conducive to communication, camaraderie and team building.

In addition, participating in Walk MS allows Sycuan team members to support theefforts to find a cure and raise awareness for those living with MS. Anita Norton,Director of Community Development for Sycuan and team participant, feels thatTeam Sycuan’s involvement in Walk MS is truly an extension of their community.Anita says, “It’s a great day for everyone involved. The Wall of Hope is a 48-foot billboard installment that celebrates the resilience of the human spirit.Photos and messages of loving support and hope fill the Wall, sometimes with words felt – but never

before spoken. Reading it always brings home how many different people are touched by MS, in so manydifferent ways. Leaving a message on the Wall is a great way to honor the person you are walking for.

Walk MS is made possible in part by the following sponsors...

As San Diego’s largest locally based financial institution, San Diego CountyCredit Union® (SDCCU®) has discovered many ways and reasons to give backto its community beyond a financial sphere.

SDCCU is a well-recognized corporatecommunity leader that supports morethan 75 non-profit organizations eachyear, such as health and humanservices, community education andthe environment.

Walk MS is one cause that SDCCU haspassionately supported for the last 13years. With nearly 300members, Team SDCCU CommunityCrew has earned recognition as thelargest team in the San Diego Walk MSfor seven consecutive years. Inaddition, SDCCU has served as theWalk’s title sponsor since 2002.

Tum Vongsawad, Interim President &CEO of SDCCU, said, “Financialsupport alone is not enough to makea lasting impact on such an importanthealth issue like MS. It’s important toignite the spirit and support of volunteerism, raise public awareness andprovide the resources necessary to champion great events like Walk MS.”

While these aspects of support are certainly imperative, financial contributionsremain inarguably critical to funding research towards finding a cure andtreatment for MS. In fact, SDCCU has raised nearly $250,000 throughout the

years including $23,949 at 2009’s WalkMS. Through the power of theirwidespread volunteerism andgenerosity, SDCCU has raised hope andfunds for more than 45,500 peopleaffected by MS that live in thecommunities they serve in San Diegoand the surrounding counties.Vongsawad underscored that when hesaid, “At SDCCU, we value people andcommunity. Because we live, work andplay here just like our customers, weare committed to more than justhelping them manage theirfinancial needs.”
