2011-12 UCONN ROWING2

“Being the head coach of the University of Connecticut women’s rowing team has been tremendously rewarding. I have had the opportunity to see the team grow each year. We ask our student-athletes for three characteristics when they become a member of our program…positive attitude, positive effort and coachability. When those characteristics are present, great things happen. Part of our programs’ success can be attributed to our support staff. Joe Staub, our strength and conditioning coach, plays a major part in developing creative, yet challenging, workouts for our winter training program. Our academic advisor Becky Taylor offers the support needed to accomplish our academic goals, as shown by our continued success in the classroom. Of most importance, being a member of the UConn rowing team means being a part of a second family, a family that helps you through thick and thin during your college experience and creates friendships that last a lifetime.” – Jennifer Sanford-Wendry

HEAD COACH JENNIFER SANFORD-WENDRY

J ennifer Sanford-Wendry is in her 15th

season as the head coach of the University of Connecticut rowing program in 2011-2012. She was named the head rowing coach in the fall of 1997 when women’s rowing became a varsity sport at UConn.

Sanford-Wendry led the team to its most successful season in 2005. The team won the points trophy at the Dad Vail Championship as the varsity eight won, the junior varsity eight finished second, and the novice eight finished third.

In 2005 the team also finished fourth at the BIG EAST Championship – its highest finish at that event. The second varsity eight, novice eight, and novice four all finished third, while the varsity eight placed fifth, and the varsity four was sixth.

In 2004, Sanford-Wendry saw the UConn junior varsity eight win the Dad Vail Championship. In 2010, Sanford-Wendry saw the UConn novice eight win the Dad Vail Championship.

Last season, UConn sent three boats to the semifinals of the Dad Vail Regatta and finished fifth at the BIG EAST Championship.

In the classroom, the UConn Women’s Rowing team members are role-models for all students at the University of Connecticut, as they continually have a 3.0 or higher team GPA, and often have several student-athletes earn GPAs of 3.5 or higher.

Prior to coming to UConn, Sanford-Wendry was the novice women’s

coach at the University of Pennsylvania, where she led the Quaker novice eight to the finals of the Eastern Sprints. In 1996 and 1997, she was the United States Junior National Development Team coach.

Sanford-Wendry, a 1993 graduate of Syracuse University, has been associated with rowing her entire life. She began rowing when she was seven years old and had her first race in a single when she was 10. Her coaching career began at age 16, when she began coaching youth programs for the Syracuse Chargers Rowing Club. After graduating from college, Sanford-Wendry taught elementary school for three years while coaching the Liverpool High School women’s crew. In 1995, her Liverpool High School senior eight won the Scholastic Rowing Association National Championship.

In addition to her coaching responsibilities at UConn, she is a mem-ber of the Female Athlete Performance Committee and works with the Female Athlete Peer Group.

Sanford-Wendry comes from a large coaching family. Her father, Bill Sanford, retired in 2002 after coaching the men’s crew at Syracuse University for 37 years. Her sister Kris was the head women’s rowing coach at Syracuse from 1996 to 2010. At Marist College, her cousin Tom Sanford is the Director of Rowing and Head Women’s Coach.

Sanford-Wendry resides in Coventry, CT with her husband, Brian, sons Will (9), Wyatt (7) and Wade (2), and dog Libby.

52011-12 UCONN ROWING

2012 SPRING PREVIEW

T he 2012 University of Connecticut

women’s rowing team looks at the spring season with a very positive out-look.

All nine members of last season’s Varsity Eight return and the team is joined by some very solid freshman recruits and walk-ons.

The 2011 fall season was high-lighted by a third place finish in the Club Eight event at the Head of the Charles Regatta and a third place fin-ish at the Head of the Fish Regatta for both the Varsity Eight and Second Varsity Eight.

UConn goes into the spring rac-ing season with the largest squad its had in years, with 54 student-athletes competing for seats. UConn will race a Varsity Eight, Second Varsity Eight, Varsity Four, Second Varsity Four, Novice Eight and Second Novice Eight.

The Huskies will send the top two eights to the Murphy Cup in Camden N.J. this season for the first time, with an opportunity to race sev-eral teams that they will see at the Dad Vail Regatta at the end of the season.

The Knecht Cup, also in Camden N.J. a few weeks later, is a large regatta with a similar format to the Dad Vail through a progression of heats, semifinals and finals.

In between the large regattas, UConn will have dual races both home and away and will race teams including Trinity, Marist, Massachusetts, Holy Cross and Miami.

The Dad Vail Regatta is what the Huskies have their eye on at the end of the season with the hopes that each crew will be fast enough to make the grand final in their respective event. UConn will conclude its season the day after the Dad Vail Regatta with the BIG EAST Championship. UConn is looking forward to the new format of heats where qualifiers take place in a time trial format.

UConn will be led by its nine seniors who have shown to be excel-lent leaders both on and off the water. Jessica Chames, Brittanie Reinold, Katie Visentin, Amanda Sibley, Sara Trevisani, Diana Filipek, Mary Grace Haggett, Andriel Doolittle and Kate Clarke will be spread out across the top three varsity boats, and their senior leadership within the crews will have a major positive impact across the board.

2011-12 UCONN ROWING6

2011-12 ROWING CAPTAINS

Kaitlyn ClarkeSenior Tolland, Conn. Tolland

AT UCONN: Is in her third year as a member of the team. HIGH SCHOOL: Attended Tolland High School … was a four letter winner in cross country, All-Conference all four years, All-State freshman and senior years, MVP sophomore, junior, and senior years, and team captain junior and senior years … Scholar-Athlete … high honor student … class valedictorian.

PERSONAL: Kaitlyn Shoushan Clarke … biomedical engineering major … born on March 29, 1990.

PLANS AFTER GRADUATION: “After graduation, I plan on having a great weekend of rowing at Dad Vail and the BIG EAST! The weeks and months following that, however, are a little more uncertain. I have been actively pursuing a lot of biomedical engineering jobs in hopes of gaining field experience before returning to school to pursue my master’s degree.”

CLARKE ON ROWING AT UCONN: “A lot of people ask, why rowing? And to an outsider it must be hard to understand. The long hours at practice and in the weight room are tiring and time consuming - it’s a lifestyle most would turn away from. However, for a rower these are things you thrive on. The hard practices that seem impossible yet somehow you manage to get through, the sunrises, the feel of the water underneath the boat and the thrill of winning medals are my fondest memories from college. My teammates, who have become my closest friends, are the amazing women that I have been fortunate enough to share all these memories with.”

PLANS AFTER GRADUATION: “After graduation I plan to roam free for a year until settling in at a graduate school as part of my quest to become the Dr. Doolittle of children.”

DOOLITTLE ON ROWING AT UCONN: “Through my four years at UConn, no matter what was going on in my life, rowing was, and will continue to be, what got me through each day. Whether it was a beautiful morning on the lake or a dreadful erg practice midway through winter training, it was something reliable, welcoming and even comforting. As much as we complain about being tired, having to go to practice or how hard a workout was, we continue to come back each day because deep down we all know how much we simply need and flat out love this sport and the people in it. We turn to our teammates in times of need and the water in times of stress. For a few hours each day, rowing is all that exists in our lives and that’s what I’ll miss the most.”

2011-12 ROWING SENIORS

Jessica ChamesSenior Hooksett, NH Manchester Central

AT UCONN: Is in her fourth year as a member of the team. FALL 2011: Competed in five seat of the second varsity eight that placed third at the Head of the Fish. 2010-11: Spent the season recovering from an injury. 2009-10: Competed in both the junior varsity eight and first varsity four; finished the season as stroke of the first varsity four. 2008-09: Competed in the junior varsity and novice eights; finished the season in four seat of the junior varsity eight.

PLANS AFTER GRADUATION: “After graduation, I plan on returning to New Hampshire to pursue sales and marketing positions within the business sector, with the hopes of eventually returning to school to get my master’s degree.”

CHAMES ON ROWING AT UCONN: “Often discussed in regards to rowing is its complete reliance on the ability of a group to function as a single unit, which vastly differs from sports that are able to both recognize and rely upon MVPs. Many, therefore, praise the humility of a rower who sacrifices recognition granted in more individualized sports for the sake of togetherness in a boat. However, I find few circumstances as compelling as being placed in a boat and given the responsibility of never shying away from exhaustion, pain and nausea for the sake of my teammates, if not myself. The last four years have only reaffirmed my belief that rowers are credited for being far more humble than they truly are. For what rower cannot attest to the incredible sense of duty and pride she feels towards her teammates as she sits amongst them at the start of a race? I can personally assure unaware appreciators of the sport that the last sensation a rower experiences seconds before the official cries out ‘Ready, Row!’ is that of humility. Rather, an instant before the official’s final call is delivered, the rower straightens her back and raises her chin. She sinks her oar into the water and locks herself into three-quarters position, ready for the two thousand meter course behind her. This single second is the moment that has always seen me through. It is a moment of anything but humility. It is an empowering thrill - for rower, coxswain and crew team alike. Thank you to the University of Connecticut Women’s Rowing team and coaching staff for this and so much more.”

Diana FilipekSenior Sewell, NJ Bishop Eustace Prep

AT UCONN: Is in her fourth year as a member of the team. FALL 2011: Stroked the varsity eight that placed third at the Head of the Charles and third at the Head of the Fish. 2010-11: Stroked the varsity eight. 2009-10: Competed in the varsity four and the junior varsity eight; finished the season as two seat of the junior varsity. 2008-09: Stroked the novice eight that placed third at the Dad Vail Regatta.

HIGH SCHOOL: Attended Bishop Eustace Prep … earned three varsity letters as a member of the rowing team … was a member of the varsity eight that was Stotesbury Cup Champions and the Philadelphia City Champions … in junior year, stroked the 2V8 that won bronze at the Philadelphia City Championship and SRAA Nationals … participated in the Women’s Royal Henley Regatta … graduated with honors having completed the cum laude program.

PERSONAL: Diana Rae Filipek … nursing major … born on November 3, 1989.

PLANS AFTER GRADUATION: “After graduation, I plan to take the NCLEX and start work as a registered nurse. I am looking to work on the East Coast, preferably. I hope to work either on a medical-surgical floor, or a critical care unit, so that I am able to gain the experience to pursue graduate school to become a nurse anesthetist.”

FILIPEK ON ROWING AT UCONN: “After four years of rowing at UConn I have found a new love and appreciation for the sport I have dedicated nine years of my life to. The program at UConn allowed me to not only have a “family” here, but also promoted self-discipline and determination. I have been part of the ultimate team sport, and know that the knowledge and skills I have regarding teamwork will definitely translate to my Nursing career. I have found some of my best friends within the Rowing family, and I know that these four years of rowing here have allowed me to grow as an athlete, as well as an individual. The Coaching staff has fostered a strong positive environment and always promoted the concept of a Student-Athlete, strongly emphasizing success on and off the water. The hard work that I put into this program over the past four years has fostered the mindset that I can do anything I put my mind to. I have learned so much through rowing, especially at UConn, and believe that it has allowed me to find who I truly am. I am so proud of what I, and my fellow seniors, have accomplished in rowing, as well as academics, at UConn. I know that I will cherish these memories and friendships for many years to come.”

I would like to thank the coaches for always pushing me to my limits and teaching me to never give up.” “Rowing, like success, is a journey, not a destination”- Rick Clother

UCONN ROWING AND MIAMI

T he UConn rowing team has been a regular Miami Beach

visitor since taking its first South Florida training trip in January 1999. Since 2006, the team has made two Miami Beach trips each season – once in January during winter break, then again in March during spring break.

The winter break trip is strictly training, while the spring break trip includes both training and racing. The Huskies typically open their spring racing season against the hometown Miami Hurricanes.

The team’s home base in Miami is the Ronald W. Shane Center on scenic Indian Creek. The “creek”, actually a large protected waterway, leads into several canals and the Biscayne Bay, allowing for miles of rowing in all directions.

“I can’t think of a better place to bring the team for winter rowing than Miami,” says UConn head coach Jennifer Sanford-Wendry. “We can always count on warm

temperatures, and given the amount of water access there, we can always find good water to practice on. The Shane Watersport Center is a well run training facility that has been very hospitable to us year after year. Having the opportunity to race the Miami Hurricanes in March, in addition to scrimmaging other collegiate teams that train there, completes the experience.”

uConn’s results at the dad vail reGatta

UConn won the Jack and Nancy Seitz Trophy at the 2005 Dad Vail Regatta for the women’s points championship.

UConn coach Jennifer Sanford-Wendry accepts the “College Coach of the Year” award at the 2007 Dad Vail Regatta.

The 2009 UConn novice eight finished third at the Dad Vail Regatta.

The Dad Vail Regatta began in 1934 and was started by two men with ties to rowing at the University of Pennsylvania – Rusty Callow and Lev Brett. Callow was the coach at Penn and laid the foundation for the event, while Brett is credited with being the architect. Their goal was to have a college regatta for develop-ing crew programs.

Today, the Dad Vail Regatta is the larg-est collegiate regatta in the United States, with over 100 colleges and universities from the U.S. and Canada. Thousands of student ath-letes visit the city of Philadelphia during the weekend of the second Saturday of May.

Harry Emerson “Dad” Vail was one of America’s early college coaches. He coached at Wisconsin between 1911 and the late 1920’s. His crews competed against great odds since little rowing took place in Wisconsin.

STRENGTH & CONDITIONING / CPIA

Strength and ConditioningThe strength and conditioning program for the University of Connecticut rowing team is under the supervision of UConn strength and conditioning coordinator Jerry Martin. Kristen Heavens serves as the rowing team’s strength and conditioning coach.

Heavens is a 2009 graduate of the University of Vermont with a bachelor of science in physical education and a minor in exercise and sport science. She is currently pursuing a master’s degree in exercise science at UConn.

Heavens was a field hockey All-American at Vermont and was a team MVP and captain.

She is a graduate of Lewis Mills High School in Burlington, Conn.

Sports MedicineThe Department of Sports Medicine in the University of Connecticut Division of Athletics works as an integrated multidisciplinary team whose purpose is to provide the optimal, safe environment for the student-athletes to train and participate in their sport.

The staff takes great pride in the individual attention paid to each student-athlete. They are devoted to preventing injury, rapidly diagnosing and treating injury and maximizing athletic performance. The disciplines of athletic training, strength and conditioning, sports medicine, orthopedic sports medicine, optometry, nutrition, exercise physiology and psychology work in concert to provide comprehensive care.

Mario Diaz works with the rowing team and is in his third season as an Assistant Athletic Trainer at UConn. He oversees the day-to-day sports medicine needs of each UConn rowing student-athlete, while working closely with the rest of the sports medicine staff.

Prior to joining the UConn staff, Diaz was a graduate assistant athletic trainer at Marshall University from 2006-08 and worked with a number of teams there. He earned his undergraduate degree from Central Connecticut in athletic training in 2006 and a master’s in sport administration from Marshall in ’08.

He is a certified athletic trainer from the National Athletics Trainers Association.

Counseling Program For Intercollegiate AthletesThe Counseling Program for Intercollegiate Athletes, a unit within the Division of Academic Affairs, is the academic support program for The University of Connecticut’s 650 student-athletes. The primary goal of the program is to assist student-athletes in reaching their educational goals while they compete in intercollegiate athletics.

As academic affairs officers, CPIA counselors function as liaisons between the athletic and academic communities. Our counselors work closely with coaches, faculty and a variety of campus resources in order to help facilitate students’ successful transition into college life by instituting academic and social support programs, including but not limited to Counseling, Pre-Advising, Tutorial and Life Skills Programs.

The CPIA staff includes a director, eight full-time counselors, three graduate assistants and a large compliment of tutors.

Becky Taylor works with the women’s rowing program. She is a 1994 graduate of the University of Massachusetts.

UCONN IN THE COMMUNITY

The University of Connecticut Division of Athletics believes that the responsibilities of student-athletes reach beyond the classrooms, libraries, field and courts. Community service is an integral part of the UConn experience as Husky student-athletes contribute countless hours each year of a num-ber of worthy causes.

Much of this community service is coordinated through the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. The Committee consists of representatives from each of UConn’s intercollegiate teams. In addition to community service, the SAAC promotes fellowship and camaraderie between student-athletes from dif-ferent sports.

The UConn rowing team has a long tradition of being involved in SAAC and performing community service. The rowing team is one of the highest represented teams in SAAC, usually having over half the team participating in various events. This year, rowers have helped with food, coat, and toy drives, and have also spent time reading in elementary school classrooms. Members of the rowing team are also involved in the Goal Line program that works with East Hartford Middle School girls.

Most recently, the rowing team took on a community ser-vice project of its own. Each student-athlete raised money for the Jump Rope for Heart program and spent time jump roping with children from Coventry Grammar School.

E.J. Joseph of the rowing teams reads to students at the Hebron Elementary School.

Kate Hughes of the rowing teams reads to students at the Hebron Elementary School.

Members of the UConn rowing team take part in a “Winter Wear Drive” at a Husky football game at Rentschler Field.

Member of the UConn rowing team work with student-athletes from other sports gather toys and books from drives at Husky basketball games.

The UConn rowing team took part in the Jump Rope for Heart program at a local

Students enjoy the familiarity of an intimate academic institution, while being just a short drive from major cities. UConn’s regional campuses are strategically placed across the state in Avery Point, Stamford, Torrington, Waterbury, and West Hartford, offering a quality education to meet our students’ distinct needs.

huskyManiaDivision I in all sports, we have a variety of men’s and women’s varsity athletics. Home of Huskymania, sports at UConn include baseball, basketball, cross country, field hockey, football, golf, ice hockey, lacrosse, rowing, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, indoor and outdoor track, and volleyball. Since 1995, UConn athletic teams have captured 11 NCAA national championships, including unprecedented dual men’s and women’s basketball championships in 2004 – the first University to do so in NCAA Division I history. UConn’s standard of athletic excellence extends to the gridiron, where the Huskies, who have played in four-straight bowl games, play for sellout crowds of 40,000 roaring football fans at the ultra-modern Rentschler Field.

STORR CENTER

On Wednesday, June 29, 2011, the Mansfield Downtown Partnership joined with the Town of Mansfield, the University of Connecticut,

and Storrs Center master developer LeylandAlliance, LLC and their part-ner Education Realty Trust (EDR) in welcoming Mansfield residents and friends in celebrating the ceremonial groundbreaking of Storrs Center.

Governor Dannel P. Malloy, United States Congressman Joe Courtney, Secretary of State Denise Merrill, State Senator Don Williams, State Representative Gregory Haddad, Mansfield Mayor Elizabeth Paterson, UConn President Susan Herbst, and Mansfield Downtown Partnership Board President Philip Lodewick addressed the crowd of over three hundred who gathered at the intersection of Dog Lane and Storrs Road (Route 195) in Mansfield. Mansfield resident and current UConn student Spencer Hamlin performed the National Anthem to begin the ceremony. Following remarks from the visiting officials, the ceremonial groundbreak-ing took place near the site of the first building to be constructed as part of the future downtown.

Storrs Center, which has been in planning and development for almost ten years, will be a mixed-use, pedestrian-oriented town center located within an easy walking distance of the UConn Storrs campus, Mansfield’s Town Hall and Community Center, and E. O. Smith High School. The new downtown will host a wide variety of shops, restaurants, offices, and cafés, along with new residential options, including studio, one-, two-, and three-bedroom units.

The new, market-rate residential units will appeal to young profes-sionals, empty nesters, faculty, graduate students, and other residents of the area – anyone who desires a quality lifestyle in an upscale town center with all of the social and cultural advantages found near one of the nation’s top universities.

Storrs Center has been planned as an environmentally-sensitive and sustainable downtown that combines residential, commercial, civic, and recreational uses within a walkable area. Of the nearly fifty acre site, only about fifteen acres will be developed (twelve acres of which were previously developed). The remaining acreage will be set aside as a conservation area,

which abuts the Whetten Woods, a preserved area held by Joshua’s Tract Conservation and Historic Trust. An intermodal transportation center, adjacent to the new parking garage, will accommodate buses, shared cars, electric cars, and bicycles. Mansfield residents and visitors will have conve-nient access to many amenities without needing to make multiple car trips.

The first phase of Storrs Center, scheduled to open in the fall of 2012, will be located north of Dog Lane, near Buckley residential hall, and will include 127 apartments and 27,000 square feet of commercial space. The second phase, consisting of 160 apartments and 40,000 square feet of com-mercial space, will be south of Dog Lane and is scheduled to open in fall of 2013.

“It is one of the most exciting public/private initiatives in the state,” Governor Malloy remarked during the groundbreaking ceremony. “This project does all the right things: It maximizes the value of the University of Connecticut, puts people to work, and creates a town center to enhance the quality of life around a great university.”

CLOSE TO STORRS

In addition to all that the city of Hartford and the state of Connecticut has to offer, the region within two hours of Storrs is ripe with cultural and entertainment possibilities.

NEW YORK CITY (142 mi les)

The United States’ largest city and “the media capital of the world,” New York City is located approximately two hours from Storrs and offers a wide array of cultural opportunities. From the glitter of Times Square, to the vast expanse of Central Park, to the majestic skyline, New York City is an incomparable destination and one that can be easily reached by the Metro-North train lines that run into southern Connecticut. UConn students also enjoy the city’s active sporting landscape. The BIG EAST Conference men’s basketball tournament, played every March at fabled Madison Square Garden, is one of the country’s premier collegiate conference championship events. The New York metro area also boasts 10 major professional sports franchises, including the NFL’s New York Jets and Giants, Major League Baseball’s New York Mets and Yankees, the NBA’s New York Knicks and New Jersey Nets, the NHL’s New York Islanders, New York Rangers and New Jersey Devils and the WNBA’s New York Liberty.

SPRINGFIELD (47 mi les)

The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame is located less than an hour from Storrs in Springfield, Mass., just minutes from the YMCA where Dr. James Naismith invented the game in 1891. A must-see for any fan of the hardwood, the Hall of Fame reopened in the fall of 2002 in a brand new $45 million home just off of Interstate 91 in Springfield. The pinnacle of any basketball career, the hall’s long list of inductees now includes UConn men’s basketball coach Jim Calhoun, a 2005 inductee, and women’s basketball coach Geno Auriemma, a 2006 inductee. Once you finish your tour of the Hall of Fame, Springfield’s neighboring suburb of Agawam is the home of Six Flags New England, the region’s largest amusement park.

The birthplace of the American Revolution, Boston’s historic Freedom Trail is a living history textbook, covering everything from the Battle of Bunker Hill to the midnight ride of Paul Revere. Meanwhile, the city blends its old world charm with a cosmopolitan new world attitude that is evidenced by some of the trendier shops and restaurants that line both historic Faneuil Hall Marketplace and the Back Bay’s Newbury Street. One of the world’s foremost centers of education, Boston is home to over 50 colleges and universities; perhaps the entire world’s most concentrated collection of colleges. The greater Boston area also includes the summer beach resorts on Cape Cod and the islands of Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard. A hub of sporting activity, the 2004 and 2007 World Series Champion Boston Red Sox have called fabled Fenway Park home since 1912. TThe 2008 NBA Champion Boston Celtics and the 2011 Stanley Cup Champions Boston Bruins also can Beantown home, while the 2002, 2004 and 2005 Super Bowl Champion New England Patriots and MLS’ New England Revolution play outside of the city in Foxboro’s Gillette Stadium.

CITY OF HARTFORD

I t has long been known as the “Insurance Capital

of the World” and it serves as a daily busy hub for some of the most dynamic corporations in the nation. It also serves as the home for UConn football at Rentschler Field and a home-away-from-home for the UConn men’s and women’s basketball teams at the XL Center.

The City of Hartford, Connecticut’s state capital, and the Greater Hartford region are ranked highly for workforce productivity, accessibility, income levels, technology, education, the arts and heritage. Hartford is resource-rich with desirable residential real estate, communications, infrastructure, parkland and nature trails, health care and pubic safety.

The city serves as the headquarters for several Fortune 500 companies, including United Technologies Corporation, The Hartford Financial Services Group, Aetna, Inc., and Northeast Utilities. Hartford employs seven time more people in the insurances field than the average metropolitan area. Among those employers are Aetna, Hartford Steam Boiler, ING, CIGNA, Travelers and The Phoenix Companies.

Hartford is home to the nation’s oldest public art museum (Wadsworth Atheneum), the oldest public park (Bushnell Park), the oldest continuously published newspaper (The Hartford Courant), the second-oldest secondary school (Hartford Public HS), and until its closure in 2009, the sixth-oldest opera company in the nation (Connecticut Opera).

In 2010, the Hartford metropolitan area ranked second nationally based on per capita economic activity, behind only San Francisco, California. Hartford is ranked 32nd of 318 metropolitan areas in total economic production and, with its Knowledge Corridor sister city Springfield, Mass, the two cities metropolitan areas generate over $110 billion GDP, more than nearly half of the 50 U.S. states.

Hartford’s neighborhoods are diverse and historic. The central business district, as well as the State Capitol, Old State House and a number of museums and shops are located Downtown. Parkville, home to Real Art Ways, is named for the confluence of the north and the south branches of the Park River. Frog Hollow, in close proximity to Downtown, is home to Pope Park and Trinity College which is one of the nation’s oldest institutions of higher learning. Asylum Hill, a mixed residential and commercial area, houses the headquarters of several insurance companies as well as the historic homes of Mark Twain and Harriet Beecher Stowe.

The West End, home to the Governor’s residence, Elizabeth Park, and the University of Connecticut School of Law, abuts the Hartford Golf Club. Sheldon Charter Oak is renowned as the location of the Charter Oak and its successor monument as well as the former Colt headquarters including Samuel Colt’s family estate – Armsmear. The North East neighborhood is home to Keney Park and a number of the city’s oldest and ornate homes. The South End features “Little Italy” and was the home of Hartford’s sizeable Italian community. South Green hosts Hartford Hospital. The South Meadows is the site of Hartford-Brainard Airport and Hartford’s industrial community.

The North Meadows has retail strips, car dealerships, and Comcast Theatre. Blue Hills is home of the University of Hartford and also houses the largest per capita of residents claiming Jamaican-American heritage in the United States. Other neighborhoods in Hartford include Barry Square, Behind the Rocks, Clay Arsenal, South West, and Upper Albany- which is dotted by many Caribbean restaurants and specialty stores.

Hartford has also attracted many significant businesses in other industries including aerospace, precision machinery, information technology and

health and medical. Four of the nations Top 25 Companies For Executive Women, as recognized by Executive Female, are located in Hartford.

The newest attraction in Hartford opened in 2005 with the debut of the Connecticut Convention Center — a $230 million, 1.6 million-square-foot convention facility that is one of a series of projects that is bringing new life to the city.

One of the hubs of downtown activity in Hartford is the XL Center, which is also the home facility for the Hartford Wolfpack of the American Hockey League. Each year, the finest golfers in the world compete at The Travelers Championship, which is played at Cromwell’s Tournament Players Club at River Highlands and is part of the PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup.

UCONN ATHLETICS

University of Connecticut

ATHLETICSIt was a remarkable year for UConn Athletics in 2010-2011. The men’s basketball team won its third NCAA Championship in school history and, in the process, UConn became the first school to ever advance to a BCS bowl game and both the men’s and women’s NCAA Final Four in the same academic year.

UConn sponsors a total of 24 sports that compete on the NCAA Division level and is a member of the BIG EAST Conference. UConn has won 11 national championships since 1990 and has won 100 BIG EAST regular season or tournament championships.

The UConn men’s track and field team hit the “BIG EAST Double” as it won both the indoor and outdoor championships.

Consensus All-American Kemba Walker and the men’s basketball team won the NCAA Championship and

made the customary trip to the White House.

Danielle Cecco became the first UConn’s women’s diver in history to

qualify for an NCAA Championship.

ATHLETIC DIRECTOR WARDE J. MANUEL

W arde J. Manuel, who has had a distinguished career in intercollegiate ath-

letics that ranges from being a student-athlete to a director of athletics, became the Director of Athletics in March. Manuel, a 1990 graduate of the University of Michigan where he played both football and track and field, has most recently been the Director of Athletics at the University at Buffalo for the past six years.

Manuel led a 20-sport program at Buffalo, an institution that is a member of the prestigious American Association of Universities. Buffalo enjoyed an unparalleled period of success during his time there from an athletic, academic and community service perspective.

“I am so honored and excited to come to the University of Connecticut,” said Manuel. “UConn is synonymous with greatness, excellence and achieve-ment. It is without a doubt one of the legendary schools that is at the pinnacle of intercollegiate athletics. The opportunity to be the athletics director at UConn and lead this extraordinary division is the role of a lifetime. You have remarkable coaches, great leadership, outstanding student-athletes and a wonderful base of fans, alumni and supporters. Our focus will be on academic success, compliance, ensuring great relationships with our fans, friends and supporters and, without a doubt, victory on the field and the court. My family and I are so happy to call UConn home.”

From an academic standpoint, teams at Buffalo enjoyed incredible aca-demic success. When Manuel arrived at UB, there were four programs - foot-ball, men’s basketball, wrestling, and baseball - that fell far below the NCAA Academic Progress Rate (APR) cut score of 925. With a focused academic plan, all four teams posted a four-year APR rate above the cut score and at the end of 2009-10, 10 of UB’s 20 sports had scores of 975 or above.

Buffalo enjoyed great on-field success during Manuel’s time as the football team participated in the 2009 International Bowl and the men’s basketball team made postseason appearances in three of the past seven years. Olympic sports also thrived under Manuel’s leadership with accomplishments such as three-straight Dad Vail Regatta titles by the rowing team, six wrestlers earning spots at the 2011 NCAA Championship and the women’s tennis team making an appearance in the 2008 NCAA tournament. The sports of baseball and softball won a record number of games during his tenure and student-athletes earned All-American and all-conference honors at record rates.

Under Manuel’s direction, UB student-athletes, coaches and staff are committed to community outreach and developed a comprehensive outreach program that reached across social and economic borders. UB student-athletes, coaches and administrators conduct over 2,500 community service hours in the Western New York community on an annual basis. UB’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) also coordinates 16 community service projects

per year including internal campus related projects and external community projects. Each of Buffalo’s 20 athletic teams also conduct at least one community service project per year.

Manuel was honored by Sports Business Journal as a 2008 national 40-Under-40 honoree after receiving the same honor from Business First of Buffalo in Fall of 2007. Manuel has served on a number of national and confer-ence committees and boards.

In September of 2011, he was one of only three Athletic Directors asked to serve on the Collegiate Model Rules committee, a working group of the Division I Committee on Academic Performance, charged with broad overview of the current NCAA Rules Manual.

He also currently serves on the NCAA Division I Championships/Sports Management Cabinet and served for four years as a member of the NCAA’s Academic Cabinet. During that time he was selected as Chair of the NCAA Academic Eligibility & Compliance Transfer Ad Hoc Committee. He is a member of the Boards of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics and the D1A Athletic Directors Association. He also serves as a mem-ber of the Council of Presidents Budget & Finance Committee and served for three years as the Chair of the Mid-American Conference Director of Athletics Finance Committee.

In June of 2007, Manuel accepted the Opportunity Award by all-time tennis great Billie Jean King, as Buffalo was recognized by the Women’s Sports Foundation as one of four “standout” colleges and universities in the nation for outstanding achievement in providing equitable athletic opportunities for its female student-athletes.

Prior to his time at Buffalo, he was the assistant and associate director of athletics for the University of Michigan, where he oversaw that school’s football and men’s basketball programs. In February 1998, he was named an assistant athletic director at Michigan with responsibilities for overseeing operational facets of the university’s athletic program. He was named an associate athletic director in September 2000.

Born May 22, 1968, Manuel is a native of New Orleans, who was a high school All-American football player and played for the University of Michigan under its legendary coach, Bo Schembechler. Manuel earned multiple letters and started at defensive end in his sophomore year. His football career was cut short by a neck injury and he subsequently earned two letters on the Wolverines’ track and field team.

After graduating from Michigan, Manuel was coordinator of the univer-sity’s Wade H. McCree, Jr., Incentive Scholars Program from June 1990 to August 1993. The program is a partnership with The President’s Council of State Universities and Detroit Public Schools that helps students prepare for higher education at public universities in Michigan. He subsequently worked briefly as an academic advisor with the Georgia Tech Athletic Association before being named assistant athletic director of academic affairs.

In the course of working on a PhD in social work and psychology at Michigan, he earned a master’s degree in social work in 1993 and an MBA from Michigan’s Ross School of Business in April 2005.

Manuel and his wife, Chrislan, have a daughter, Emma (17), and a son, Evan (13).
