TOP-NOTCHFACILITIES

The Clemson Rowing boathouse is located on the western edge of Clemson’s campus, overlooking beautiful Lake Hartwell. Only a quarter of a mile from the other athletic facilities, the boathouse seems worlds apart lying in a secluded wooded area on the shore of one of the Southeast’s largest lakes. With 56,000 acres of water and 962 miles of shoreline, Lake Hartwell offers plenty of rowable water. Built as an Army Corps of Engineers project in 1962, the lake includes many pristine rivers, creeks and inlets that provide sheltered water on even the windiest of days. Lake Hartwell facili-tates an ideal venue for the Tigers’ fully bouyed, six-lane 2000 me-ter race course. The entire course is visible from the boathouse.

The Tigers row state-of-the-art, custom built Pocock Racing Shells from Everett, Washington. Pocock is the leading boat builder pioneering racing shell specifically designed for the speed at which women row. The Tiger fleet includes four 8+, four 4-,

four 4+, twelve 2-/2x and singles.

Construction was recently completed on a new training facil-ity, which is one of the best facilities in the ACC and the South Region. The 11,500 square foot facility houses an expanded locker room, additional workout space, a team meeting room,

an athlete lounge, a kitchen, and coaches’ offices.

SEASON OUTLOOK After recording the most successful season in program history last year, the future looks bright for Clemson rowing. The list of accomplishments from last season is long, highlighted by winning an individual National Championship in the Varsity 4+, winning an ACC Championship, and competing in the NCAA Rowing Championshipsasateamforthefirsttime.Clemsonhopestobuilduponlastsea-son’s successes for an even more victorious season this year.

The Tigers return a wealth of talent from last year’s squad, including 18 mem-bers who competed in the NCAA Rowing Championships. The entire national champion Varsity 4+ crew returns this season, led by junior captain Lydia Hassell. Clemson also returns most of its ACC Championship team, including four members of the reigning ACC Crew of the Year.

“We certainly have experience returning with 18 of 23 members from the 2009 NCAA squad, “ said Head Coach Richard Ruggieri. “The leadership we are looking for is simply to re-state what is needed to be an elite program. This leader-ship will focus on the future, with a passion and dedication to be the best.”

The Tigers have an accomplished senior class, led by Brittany Cummings and Michelle Nance. Cummings, a second-team All-American last year, enters her fourth season and will attempt to be a four-year member of the Varsity 8+ crew. An All-ACC selection last season, Nance brings two years of experience competing at the U23 World Championships to the team. Both Cummings and Nance are two-time participants in the NCAA Championships. National champions Allison Colberg, Callen Erdeky, Kelly Murphy and coxswain Meredith Razzolini also return for their finalseasonwiththeTigers.Two-timeteamcaptainMairiTrimboli,JennAgee,An-drea Belbusti and Olivia Shomaker will also contribute strong leadership skills and experience to the team.

“This a very successful senior class,” said Ruggieri. “They have reached the highest level in rowing both at Clemson and around the nation. I expect each and every senior to use this experience to complete their career with pride for them-selves, their teammates and Clemson University. I also expect them to teach our younger rowers what it means to be successful and how it is done at Clemson.”

Clemson returns a talented bunch of juniors and sophomores, including team captains Connie Gorman and Lydia Hassell. Junior Liz Robb, honored as the ACC Freshman of the Year in 2008, brings two years of experience at the NCAA Cham-pionships to the squad. Grace Wolff spent most of last season with the Varsity 8+, whileNicole Bowen, SarahDaanen,CoreyGeer,VictoriaGraham, PaigeGriffith,Kelsey Hudome, Leah Kelly and Jenna Zylstra also bring a lot of racing experience to the team. Jessica Gaul, a transfer from Duke, will add speed and depth to the Tiger squad.

TheTigerswillbenefitfromatalentedgroupofsophomores, ledbyKristenAgee, Taylor Hoynacki, and coxswain Melissa Weaver, who competed at the NCAA Rowing Championships with the Second Varsity 8+ as freshmen. Other sopho-mores that are expected to compete for spots on the varsity squad include Becca Brown, Brittany Burns, Rebekah Clogston, Amber Coyne, Kenzie DuBrul, Marissa Henry, Kate Mosier, Bre Przestrzelski and Sarah Young.

Clemson has a strong freshman class this year, representing one of the largest signing classes in Clemson history. The healthy blend of experienced rowers and athletic walk-ons allow this class the opportunity to excel.

“The future of Clemson Rowing is on solid ground,” said Ruggieri. “We have the talent capable of being successful, but ultimately this success will be based upon hard work, good leadership and accountability.”

The Tigers are led by two-time South Region Coach of the Year and reigning ACC Coach of the Year Richard Ruggieri. In just two years at the helm, Ruggieri has ledtheClemsonrowingprogramtonewheights,includinga12thplacefinalrankinglast season. Robbie Tenenbaum, Missy Fiesler, and Erin Ruggieri join Ruggieri on this year’s coaching staff.

“I am very pleased to have a staff committed to the same ideals that reinforce excellence both on and off the water,” said Ruggieri. “Our rowers will get the very best, which is what I expect each and every day. The level of knowledge coupled with strong leadership is something I am proud to be a part of. I am also thankful for a staff that works well together while sending a clear and united message to all. This staff is complete and the very best in rowing.”

Clemson has an exciting and challenging schedule lined up for the spring, high-lighted by a return of the ACC Championships to Lake Hartwell on April 24. The Tigers hosted the conference championship for four consecutive seasons before a drought caused a move to Oak Ridge, Tennessee last season. This season will mark the eighth time overall that the ACC regatta has been held in Tigertown.

“It is exciting to host the ACC Championships in Clemson this year. We take a lot of pride in our facility and the support from the University and city,” said Rug-gieri. “We were fortunate to take home the championship in 2009, but understand that more is needed to repeat. We will do our best to race at the highest level which will be needed in a conference so well respected by our coaches and athletes.”

Clemson will begin the spring season at home on March 6, followed by a regatta against Boston University on Lake Hartwell the following Saturday. The Tigers will welcome Alabama, Indiana, Marist and Purdue on March 20 for the Clemson Sprints, while Cornell will round out a busy month of racing at home for the Tigers on March 27.

TheTigerswillhittheroadforthefirsttimeonApril3tocompeteintheACCand Big Ten Challenge on Lake Monticello in Virginia. Clemson will travel across the country the following weekend to race against UCLA and Southern Cal in Los An-geles, California. After hosting the ACC Championships, the Tigers will travel to Oak Ridge, Tennessee for the Aramark South/Central Sprints. Clemson has had great successinOakRidge, includingwinningtheACCChampionshipandtwicefinishingsecond in the South Region.

“The race schedule is put together to enhance race experience, maintain con-sistent training and race out of region,” said Ruggieri. “We are fortunate enough tocoverallfiveregionsinourraceschedule.Thelevelofcompetitionishighandwewillneedtofindawaytomaintainconsistencythroughout.Ultimately,itisthisconsistency that separates the good programs from the best. We will challenge our rowersandcoachestofindaway.”

The Tigers hope their talent and experience will help them to capture another NCAA berth this season.

“Our goal is the same each and every year: commitment, hard work, account-ability and a desire to be your very best both on and off the water,” said Ruggieri. “When we achieve this, our results will take care of themselves. At Clemson, we are working towards becoming National Champions. To get there nothing can be left to chance.”

Senior Brittany Cummings, a second-team All-American last sea-son, is one of the Tiger’s most experienced and talented rowers

this season.

TIGER PRIDE

“Being a part of Clemson Rowing has been a great experience. I have made lifelong friendships and created strong bonds with my teammates. Rowing is such a neat sport because it is mostly a team sport focused on making the boat as fast as possible. I know that both on and off the water my teammates have my back and are always there to support and encourage me!” -Victoria Graham

“Coming into a sport I had never participated in in high school, I would have never thought that I would get to be a part of a division I program that has already made so many accomplish-ments. I feel so fortunate to get to have been a part of ACC’s and NCAA’s.” -Corey Geer

“Clemson Rowing brings together some of the most talented and special people in the world. We are a family that trains together and supports each other both on and off the water. Together we are fighting to win a National Championship.” -Paige Griffith

“While rowing at Clemson, I have learned what a diverse sport rowing is. Rowing is extremely challenging yet rewarding. We all work so hard to reach our individual and team goals. There is truly nothing like the great feeling of reaching the high goals we set for ourselves. We are all so passionate about rowing and being the best we can be. Although rowing takes personal strength, agility and grace, it also takes our group of girls to come together and row in unity, which we do well.” -Amber Coyne

“Being a member of the Clemson Rowing team has taught me so much about teamwork and discipline. We have fun working hard together and are all trying to reach a common goal. I couldn’t do what I do everyday without the help from my teammates. Know-ing that my teammates are giving their all makes me give nothing but my best.” -Jenn Agee

“Clemson Rowing has given me a college experience that I never could have dreamed of. While it is a lot of work and dedication, along with it comes the feelings of accomplishment by starting the morning off right with a solid workout and a beautiful sunrise, or it may be when your bow ball crosses the finish line at NCAAs as the number one boat in the country. Clemson Rowing has be-come my home away from home and my teammates have become my family. These ladies are friends whom I never thought I would find. Together we support each other, push each other, and love each other. Through the hard work, perseverance, and dedication we are the underdog team rising to the top!” -Taylor Hoynacki

“The sport of rowing has pushed me past whatever I thought to be the level of my potential both mentally and physically, but at the same time it is a team where everyone knows that no level of in-dividual talent will allow us to reach our goal, instead it is what we are able to accomplish together. Every member of this team shows up day in and day out to help push each other to be a champion-ship team. It is our trust in each other that has made us successful in the past and will continue to propel us forward.” -Mairi Trimboli

“In a sport like rowing, it is impossible not to become bonded to your teammates. Clemson Rowing has introduced me to some of my best friends who I will have for my entire life. We have learned to push each other beyond our limits and support each other. Being a part of this team has also allowed me to reach athletic goals that I previously thought were unattainable. Being a part of an ACC Championship team and a National Championship Four is something that we will share forever and I could not ask for better teammates to share it with.” -Kelly Murphy

Academics, Leadership and Community Outreach. The rowing team scored the most points in the athletics cat-egory by winning their first ACC title and having a national cham-pion in the Varsity 4+ crew. Academically, the team was among the top five teams for both the fall and spring semesters. In addition, eight rowers were named CRCA National Scholar Athletes and 10 were named to the ACC All-Academic team. Senior Michelle Nance was named the ACC Scholar Athlete of the Year and recent graduate Megan Bendik was awarded a postgraduate scholarship by the ACC. Six Tiger rowers were named to the All-ACC team, four were named to the All-Region team, and three student-ath-letes were named All-Americans. The rowing team amassed 107 total points by averaging over 35 hours of community service per student-athlete. The President's Pride Cup is the highest overall award a team can receive at Clemson.

Clemson rowing has been well rep-resented at the U23 World Cham-pionships over the past three years. A highlight for Clemson rowing was in the summer of 2008, when Clem-son sent more rowers to the regatta than any other University. Four Ti-ger rowers comprised the Women’s 4- boat, which was coached by Clem-son Head Coach Richard Ruggieri.

2008-09 SEASON REVIEW The spring of 2009 was full of success and firsts for the Clemson rowing pro-gram. The Tigers garnered a variety of individual and team honors on the way to recording the most successful season to date for the program. The Varsity 4+ crew brought home the program’s first National Championship in Clemson’s first team appearance at the NCAA regatta. Clemson also won its first-ever ACC Champion-ship last season. In just his second year at Clemson, Head Coach Richard Ruggieri collected ACC Coach-of-the-Year and South Region Coach-of-the-Year honors after leading his team to an exceptional season. Three Tigers were named to the Pocock All-America team, the most elections from Clemson in a season. Senior Jessica Leidecker was a first-team honoree, while junior Brittany Cummings and senior Hilary Cumbest earned second-team honors. All three rowers were members of the Varsity 8+ boat, which had one of the most successful seasons in school history. “It is a great individual honor to be named an All-American,” said Ruggieri. “Re-ceiving three selections was a great statement about Clemson rowing and where it is going.” Clemson also had four rowers named to the CRCA All-South Region team last season. Leidecker and Cummings were named to the first team, while Cumbest and Stefanie Kozuszek were second-team selections. Leidecker concluded her career as one of the most decorated rowers in pro-gram history. She was a second-team All-America pick in 2008, becoming just the third Clemson rower to be a two-time All American. In addition, she was a two-time All-Region and a two-time All-ACC selection. In addition to having a successful spring season, the Tigers also fared well in fall competition. The non-traditional fall season got underway for Tiger rowing with a trip to Welland, Ontario. At the Head of the Welland, Clemson’s Varsity 8+ finished first in its race with a time of 16:26.43. Next up for the Tigers was a trip to Boston for the world’s largest two-day rowing event, the prestigious Head of the Charles. The Varsity 4+ finished in second place overall, and were the first university crew to cross the finish line with a time of 18:58.85. The Varsity 8+ finished in 11th place out of 38 boats with a time of 16:45.76. In the final race of the fall season, the Tigers traveled to Chattanooga, Tenn. for the Head of the Hooch. Three boats finished in first place in their respective races, including the Varsity 8+,Varsity 4+ and a Varsity 2- crew consisting of Leidecker and Michelle Nance. As a team, Clemson accumulated 338 points, the highest scor-ing college team at the regatta. The Tigers also won the Schlachter Cup, which is awarded to the highest scoring ACC team at the Head of the Hooch. The Tigers opened the spring season in March with a sweep of Eastern Michigan in a scrimmage held on Lake Hartwell. Clemson won all nine 1500-meter pieces, despite rainy conditions. Clemson hosted Alabama, Marist, and Pennsylvania on March 14, and won 15 out of 17 pieces. The following weekend, the Tigers won eight out of 15 pieces against Indiana, Marist, and Purdue. The Varsity 8+ crew, winners of all three pieces, was named the ACC Crew-of-the-Week for their performance. The Tigers headed to the West Coast to compete in the Pac-10 Challenge in Redwood Shores, Calif. during the last weekend of March. The Varsity 4+ and Nov-ice 8+ both earned a pair of victories over Stanford and UCLA. Clemson traveled to Charlottesville, Va. on April 11 to compete in the Virginia Invitational. The Tigers won nine out of 10 races, including victories over Tennessee and Central Florida. After an outstanding performance in its races, the Varsity 8+ was named the ACC Crew-of-the-Week for the second time during the spring. The Tigers took to the road to Oak Ridge, Tenn. on April 20 to compete in the ACC Championship. Clemson had hosted the previous five championship regattas on Lake Hartwell, but a change of scenery turned out well for the Tigers. The team got off to a good start when the Varsity 4+ won the first race of the morning with a time of 7:43.10. The winning crew consisted of Callen Erdeky, Caitlin O’Neill, Brit-tany Robinson, Lydia Hassell, and Meredith Razzolini (coxswain). With the victory, the Varsity 4+ became just the fourth non-Virginia boat to win a race at the conference championship. Clemson is the only other team to have won individual races in the history of the regatta. Virginia won the Second Varsity 8+ race, but Clemson finished in second place with a time of 6:57.13. Clemson saved the best performance for last in the Varsity 8+ race. The Tigers finished first ahead of Virginia with a time of 6:38.40, the first time in the history of the conference championship that Virginia did not win the Varsity 8+ race. The Cavaliers finished with a time of 6:47.92. With a total of 55 points, Clemson became the first school to defeat the Univer-sity of Virginia for the conference title in the ten-year history of the championship regatta. Virginia had never before lost two races at the ACC Championship. The Varsity 8+ earned ACC Crew-of-the-Year honors after defeating Virginia for the title. The winning crew included Leidecker, Meg Bendik, Liz Robb, Nance, Kozuszek, Grace Wolff, Cummings, Cumbest, and coxswain Carla Englund

The 2008-09 Clemson rowing team recorded the most success-ful season in program history, winning both an ACC and National

Championship.

Five student-athletes were named to the All-ACC team, the most all-conference team members ever from Clemson. The honorees included Cumbest, Cummings, Leidecker, Nance and Englund. With the exception of Leidecker, all of the rowers were first-time All-ACC selections. “To win an ACC Championship was a testament to a work ethic and a belief in what we do each and every day,” Ruggieri said. Clemson also had a strong showing at the Aramark South/Central Sprints, where they finished second in the South region and sixth overall for the second consecu-tive season. The Varsity 8+ finished fifth in the grand final with a speedy time of 6:09.5. The Second Varsity 8+ finished sixth in the grand final, while the Varsity 4+ also com-peted in the grand final and finished fourth. The best finish of the day came from the Second Varsity 4+, which finished second in the grand final of the Open 4+. For the first time in school history, Clemson was selected to participate in the NCAA Rowing Championships as a team. The Varsity 8+, Second Varsity 8+ and Varsity 4+ each traveled to Cherry Hill, N.J. to compete against 15 other schools. The Tigers got out to a strong start at the NCAA Championships, with all three crews advancing to the semifinals after the first day of competition. The Tigers were one of 10 schools that had all three crews advance to the semifinals. The Varsity 4+ provided the top performance for Clemson by winning its heat and advancing to the grand final. Both Varsity 8+ boats advanced to the petite finals. On the final day of competition, the Varsity 4+ boat captured the National Championship with a time of 7:26.28. Clemson led by more than two seconds at both the halfway mark and the 1,500-meter mark before holding off Wisconsin by 1.76 seconds to win the first-ever national title in program history. The winning crew consisted of Kelly Murphy, Hassell, Erdeky, Allison Colberg, and coxswain Mer-edith Razzolini. Clemson earned fifth- and sixth-place finishes in the petite finals of the Second Varsity 8+ and Varsity 8+, respectively. As a team, the Tigers finished in 12th place overall with 43 total points, just three points shy of a top 10 finish. “It was a wonderful experience to bring our entire team and compete with the best in the nation,” said Ruggieri. “It was amazing to see all three crews make it to the semifinals and ultimately see the four win a national championship.” Clemson’s Varsity 8+ finished the season ranked No. 12 in the USRowing/CRCA poll, the highest final ranking in program history. The crew was ranked as high as 10th during the season, which is the highest ranking the program has ever achieved. Not only was Clemson successful on the water, but the program also posted outstanding performances in the classroom. The list of rowers on the academic honor roll included All-Americans Leidecker and Cummings and four members of the National Championship 4+ boat: Colberg, Erdeky, Murphy and Razzolini. Thirty-four rowers were named to the ACC Academic Honor Roll and 11 were named to the ACC All-Academic Team. Varsity 8+ crew member Michelle Nance was named the 2009 ACC Rowing Scholar-Athlete, becoming the first Clemson rower to earn the distinction. In addition, the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association named eight rowers Na-tional Scholar Athletes. They included Andrea Belbusti, Bendik, Colberg, Melanie McDaniel, Murphy, Nance, Nicole Rau, and Mairi Trimboli. The ACC awarded senior Megan Bendik with the Weaver-James-Corrigan post-graduate scholarship. The scholarship is given to student-athletes who have per-formed with distinction in both the classroom and on the field of play, while dem-onstrating exemplary conduct in the community. Bendik will use her scholarship to pursue graduate studies at Johns Hopkins University. The rowing team received the President’s Pride Cup for the 2008-09 school year, which is the highest award a team can receive at Clemson. The award recog-nizes excellence in athletics, academics, leadership and community outreach. With construction on a new boathouse complete and a strong foundation of success to build upon, the future of Clemson rowing is certainly bright.
