From the architecture on campus to the landscaping, the University of Alabama campus is one of the most beautiful places in the state of Alabama.

The Ferguson Center was completed in 1973. Plans at the time called for the building to be constructed over Woods Hall, but it was built slightly to the north thanks to a student campaign to save the art building.

The Ferguson Center Game Room is the perfect place to unwind, test your skill at a video game, play a friendly game of pool or Ping-Pong, or enter a campus tournament. With seven pool tables, video games, a Ping-Pong table, computer gaming and televisions, the Game Room offers a fun escape to the daily pressures of college life.

The University of Alabama offers a complete educational, cultural and social experience. Whatever your interests, you’ll nd a group, an organization, an activity or a program that will appeal to you at UA.

The newly expanded Student Recreation Center offers rst-class recreation facilities to students, faculty and

staff. It includes two multi-use gyms, nine multi-purpose courts, weight machines, 1/8-mile jogging track, extensive cardio area, locker rooms, indoor swimming pool, dry and steam saunas, 12 lighted tennis courts, four aerobics rooms, eight racquetball courts and a squash court—together encompassing more than 200,000 square feet. The facility’s outdoor aquatic area, which opened in the summer of 2003, features a lazy river, lap swim, large water-park-type slide and plenty of deck space.

MAL M. MOOREA T H L E T I C S D I R E C T O R

The University of Alabama’s director of athletics since 1999, Mal Moore has made an in-delible mark on one of the nation’s most storied athletic programs, leading a department that has enjoyed tremendous success athletically and aca-demically and has undergone an unprecedented period of growth during his tenure. Through his guidance, Alabama’s athletic department remains focused on his vision of having all Crimson Tide athletic teams and student-athletes competitive at the highest level nationally while continuing to elevate athletic fa-cilities at the Capstone to premier status nation-ally for all sports. During his tenure as director of athletics, Moore has overseen more than $200 million of capital improvements to University of Alabama athletic fa-cilities. Those projects have encompassed the entire scope of all Crimson Tide athletic programs and have bene tted every Alabama student-athlete, coach and administrator. Throughout his career, Moore has worked with a diversi ed eld of constituents, from fellow coaches and former players, to fans and the busi-ness community. All of those experiences and relationships - in addition to his ability to unify those many constituents - have made him the ideal person to lead Alabama athletics in the 21st century.

Moore’s dedication to and love of the University of Alabama was recog-nized on March 28, 2007, when, as a permanent tribute to his life-long contribution to the University of Alabama, the Board of Trustees of the University of Alabama of cially dedicated the facility formerly known as the Football Building as the Mal M. Moore Athletic Facility. Under Moore’s direction, Alabama’s athletic teams have produced na-tional championship teams in football (2009 and 2011), gymnastics (2002, 2011 and 2012), women’s golf (2012) and softball (2012) and Southeast-ern Conference championships in football, basketball, baseball, gymnastics, men’s golf, women’s golf, men’s cross country and softball. Alabama athletes have earned some of the highest honors the SEC and NCAA have to offer, including SEC Athlete of the Year, SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year, NCAA Top VIII, NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships and NCAA Sportsperson of the Year. These honors are over and above the individual conference and national titles that Alabama athletes continue to bring home to the Capstone on a regular basis. In addition to making his mark on Alabama, Moore also has made a national impact as a key member of several prestigious NCAA and college football committees. Moore has served on the NCAA Division I Football Issues Committee, the SEC Athletic Directors Bowl Advisory Committee, and the Big Six Conferences Minority Coaches Forum. Moore’s distinguished record of service to UA began more than 50 years ago when he joined the Crimson Tide football squad as a scholarship player for coach Paul “Bear” Bryant from 1958-62. Moore has the distinction of being a part of nine national championship football teams as a player, coach and athletic director (1961, 1964, 1965, 1973, 1978, 1979, 1992, 2009, and 2011), 16 SEC championships, and 38 bowl trips. He is the only individual connected with the Tide program to be a part of nine national football championships. In 2011, he was elected to the State of Alabama Sports Hall of Fame for his accomplishments as a coach and an administrator. The National Foot-ball Foundation then named Moore its 2012 John L. Toner Award winner, which goes annually to the athletic director who has “demonstrated superior administrative abilities and shown outstanding dedication to college athletics and particularly college football.” During a coaching career that spanned 31 years, Moore spent 22 of those at Alabama with stops at Montana State, Notre Dame and the NFL’s St. Louis and Phoenix Cardinals. At Alabama, Moore started as Coach Bry-ant’s graduate assistant in 1964, and then was defensive back eld coach for six seasons beginning in 1965 before becoming quarterbacks coach from 1971-82, also serving as the Tide’s rst offensive coordinator starting in 1975. He returned as offensive coordinator under Gene Stallings from 1990-93 before moving into athletic administration. A 1963 graduate of the University of Alabama, Moore holds both an undergraduate degree in Sociology and a 1964 Master’s Degree in Secondary Education from the Capstone. A native of Dozier, Ala., he was married to the former Charlotte Davis of Tuscaloosa for 41 years before she passed away after a long illness in 2010. He has one daughter, Mrs. Steve (Heather) Cook of Scottsdale, Ariz., a granddaughter, Anna Lee, and a grandson, Charles Cannon.

Dr. Judith L. Bonner was named the 28th president of The University of Alabama on Nov. 1, 2012. Founded in 1831, the University is the state’s agship and a student-centered comprehensive research university.

Dr. Bonner recently served as interim president from March 5 until Aug. 31, 2012. She was promoted to executive vice president and provost on April 1, 2006, after serving as provost and vice president for Academic Affairs since March 2003. During the decade she served as provost, the University underwent transformational change growing from 19,000 students in 2003 to more than 33,600 in 2012. Each year, the academic strength of the student body and the faculty exceeded the record set the previous year.

Alabama’s athletics programs likewise have excelled in recent years with four teams winning national championships in 2011-2012. Athletics Director Mal Moore lauds Dr. Bonner’s commitment to athletics as well as academics. “Dr. Bonner has long been a supporter of Alabama athletics and I am excited about her leadership of our great University. We have a unique unity on our campus, a special bond between our athletics program and the University at-large. Dr. Bonner’s leadership will only serve to enhance that relationship and the unity that has been such a vital part of our athletics and academic success over these many years,” Moore said.

Dr. Bonner joined the faculty at The University of Alabama in 1981 as associate professor and head of the department of human nutrition and hospitality. She served as assistant academic vice president from 1985-1990 and as special assistant to the president from 1989-1991. Promoted to professor in 1988, she was named dean of the College of Human Environmental Sciences in 1989 and held that position until 2003. Prior to coming to UA, she held faculty appointments in the department of pediatrics at UAB and the department of medical dietetics at The Ohio State University.

Dr. Bonner earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from The University of Alabama and her Ph.D. from The Ohio State University, all in nutrition. Her research, focused on nutritional needs of chronically ill children and on eating disorders, has resulted in numerous publications.

Dr. Bonner is an active member of civic, scienti c and professional organizations. Among other awards and honors, her accolades include the Distinguished Alumni Award from The Ohio State University, the AHEA Leader Award and the award for Outstanding Dietitian for the state of Alabama.

It’s obvious that Larry Davis, now in his seventh season as the Crimson Tide’s head rowing coach, with a true passion for the sport of rowing and a strong relationship with the city of Tuscaloosa, is doing exactly what he’s always wanted to. “I love the sport of rowing and I really have a commitment to the sport, the University and the city of Tuscaloosa,” Davis said. “It makes it easier to do this job when you have student-athletes who are hungry and want to achieve and have that same kind of approach to the sport that you do. I’ve been involved with rowing a long time and it makes coaching easier when you have a bunch of people around you who love the sport as much as you do.” Now in his 15th year in Tuscaloosa, Davis has been involved in the local rowing community for a vast majority of that time, still getting on the water himself on a regular basis. During that span,

he has helped the sport grow and ourish, making the Tide one of the fastest rising teams on the national scene. “One of the things that I’ve learned over time is that good things take time and you have to put them all in layers, build on the pace and keep building,” Davis said. “The University has been very good about giving us the tools we need on a step-by-step basis to achieve that goal.” It’s no easy task taking a club team and building it into a successful NCAA Division-I program, however six years down the road, Davis and his staff have much to be pleased with. “We want to be one of those sports that represents the University at the highest level,” Davis said. “I think everybody involved with the program feels that way.” Success has come early and often for Alabama rowing under Davis. In the program’s rst year, the Tide earned top-5 nishes at

many of the regattas it competed in and won a number of races in dual-meet competitions against established programs. At the Dad Vail College Championships, the Tide advanced to the semi nals in all of its races, unheard of for such an inexperienced squad. The next two seasons saw the Tide continue to make enormous strides, including a silver medal at the esteemed Head of the Charles Regatta when the Varsity 8+ grabbed second place in the women’s Club race. That spring, Alabama went to the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Championships and came away with another silver medal in the Varsity 8+ race. In 2009, the Tide posted a top-10 nish at the Head of the Charles, bettering 35 other boats as well as advancing four boats to the nals of its rst South/Central Sprint Championships. In 2010, led by the program’s rst group of fourth-year seniors, Alabama earned another medal at the Head of the Charles when it

took third in the Club 8+ race. The Tide also earned its rst varsity gold medal at the SIRA Championships when the Varsity 4+ took top honors. The 2010 season also saw Alabama take another step in its development when it joined with eight other programs from across the country to make up Conference USA’s rowing contingent. “One of the things the team hadn’t had up to that point was the ability to chase a conference championship,” Davis said “It is a great motivator throughout the year. Instead of just pushing along and seeing how we do, we have our sights set on speci c teams and getting past them.” The 2011 season saw the Tide take a huge step forward, starting with another top-10 nish at the Head of the Charles, followed by several outstanding performances in the spring. At the renowned San Diego Crew Classic, Alabama’s First Varsity 8+ took home the gold, winning the SeaWorld Cal Cup and earning Davis’ squad the inaugural Conference USA Boat of the Week honor as well as the Row2K.com Crew of the Week recognition. The Tide followed that up with a prodigious showing at the SIRA Championships, where Alabama not only repeated as the First Varsity 4+ champions but added gold in the First Varsity 8+ and the Second Varsity 8+ as well, giving UA a sweep of the open Varsity events. “Seeing what we’ve been able to accomplish up to this point in time is always a shot in the arm for me to keep excited about what’s going on,” Davis said. “We’re not where we want to be yet, but we keep making progress and the students we have associated with the program are buying into what it takes to be a top-level program.” The Tide started off the 2011-12 season by earning a gold and silver medal at the Chattanooga Head Race. They followed that by medaling in the Club 8+ race at the Head of the Charles Regatta.

The 2012 spring season, the Novice 8+ boat took rst place and the Second Varsity 8+ nishing second at the Oak Ridge Invitational.

Returning to the San Diego Crew Classic, Alabama again saw success with the First Varsity 8+ and the Second Varsity 8+ posting a top-10 nish.

The Tide had a solid showing at their third Conference USA Championships, nishing just one point out of sixth place, taking seventh overall with 20 points. Under Davis’ direction, Tide rowers have not only seen success on the water but they have excelled in the classroom as well. Over the past six years, Alabama rowers have earned the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association’s Scholar-Athlete Award 49 times, including ve in 2011-12. In 2010, the Tide’s 11 CRCA Scholar-Athlete Awards led the nation.

On a conference level, Alabama’s rowers have been named to the Southeastern Conference Academic-Honor Roll 109 times, including 17 in 2012. In its rst three years as a member of C-USA, Davis’ crew has tied the conference-best with eight spots on the league’s All-Academic team. During his tenure, Davis’ rowers have also made a marked difference in the community, leading the athletic department’s community service efforts in four of the past ve years. That kind of success for such a young program is nothing short of astounding, but it is certainly in line with Davis’ goals when he took the job as Alabama’s inaugural head coach. “We have a plan and it’s an aggressive plan but there’s no doubt in my mind that it’s one we can ful ll,” Davis said. His plan includes steady, continuous improvement in all phases of the program each year and competing for an NCAA Championship bid within the program’s rst eight to 10 years. “Starting from almost scratch, to see it move along to this point, it’s very rewarding to see that kind of growth,” Davis said. “We need to realize that we still have a long way to go, but there’s so much opportunity here I can’t see us not achieving the kind of success we’re capable of.” This success has been part of his vision from

day one, Feb. 2, 2006, when after an exhaustive search, the University’s athletics department named Davis its new rowing coach. “Larry is well-respected and connected in the rowing community and brings immediate respect to our program,” Alabama Athletics Director Mal Moore said. Davis’ past in rowing spans four decades, including more than 25 years as a coach. Before starting the Crimson Tide’s program, he coached the Alabama Crew Club starting in 1998. In addition to his duties with the club team, he has served as the Director of Wellness and Aquatics at the YMCA of Tuscaloosa County. Prior to his time in Tuscaloosa, Davis spent 1981-93 at Marist College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., where he was head coach of the varsity crew and served as the school’s compliance of cer. He led Marist to wins at the MAAC Championship

Regatta and the New York State Small College Championships. He was also the head coach of the University of Alabama-Huntsville’s varsity crew from 1977-81. Davis also spent time with the United States National Team. In 1983, he was an assistant coach for the U.S. Men’s Rowing team and later, in 1987, he served as team

manager. In 1983, Team USA competed at the World Championships in Germany and the Pan American Games in Venezuela, with the men’s 8+ winning gold at the Pan Am Games. The 1987 squad quali ed for the World Championships in Denmark and the men’s 8+ once again won gold. “I’ve worked with a lot of different programs at a lot of different levels and I try to bring that experience to bear in everything I do, from putting together workouts, to talking with the rowers, to race day,” Davis said. As an athlete, he rowed for Washington-Lee High School in Virginia, where he was a member of the last varsity 8+ to win gold at the Royal Henley Regatta in England. Davis continued his rowing career at the University of Virginia where he won numerous competitions, including the Mid-American Championship and the Southern Collegiate Rowing Association Championship. During his time in Charlottesville, the Cavaliers naled at the Dad Vail Small College Championships three times, earning a bronze medal in 1971. Davis spent all his undergraduate and graduate years at Virginia, earning a bachelor’s degree in accounting in 1973, followed by a master’s in counseling in 1977. He is married to the former Vicki Barnes of Madison, Ala.

Derek Tuten is in his sixth year as an assistant coach for the Alabama rowing team. While he is involved in all aspects of the program, his primary duties include coaching the novice rowers and serving as the program’s boatman/rigger, in charge of keeping the Tide’s boats in top condition.

“Derek brings a wealth of rowing knowledge to our program,” Davis said. “As a Tuscaloosa native and an Alabama graduate, he knows the pride everyone has in the Crimson Tide and he knows the Alabama rowing community. His experience and knowledge help our student-athletes become acclimatized to all phases of the collegiate rowing experience.”

Tuten served as head coach of the Alabama Crew Club prior to joining the Crimson Tide staff in the summer of 2007. As the club coach, he led the men to a win at the Head of the South and a nalist spot at the S.I.R.A. Championships.

“Derek is an excellent teacher when it comes to rowing,” Davis said. “He brings a balance and patience to the program in terms of how he goes about his coaching. A keen observer, he takes what he sees and works individually with the student-athletes to teach them the skills they need to be successful.”

A 1997 graduate of Central High School, Tuten coached the Alabama Crew Club for two years as an assistant under Davis before taking over the reins in 2006. During that period, the club was a consistent medalist, including earning gold at the S.I.R.A. Championships.

“Having worked with coach Davis in the past with great success, I was excited about the opportunity to do so again at the Division I level,” Tuten said. “With the university’s dedication to athletics and academics, I know this program will succeed.”

Tuten was a four-year member of the Alabama Crew Club while pursuing a psychology degree at Alabama. He also rowed for the Riverside Boat Club and Community Rowing in Boston, one of the nation’s top cities for competitive rowing.

As a competitor, Tuten rowed at the U.S. Rowing National Championships as well as the C.R.A.S.H. – B Sprints World Indoor Championships. He won gold at the Southeastern Championships, Head of the South and Chattanooga Head Race during his career. Tuten also medaled at the Head of the Chattahoochee, Head of the Tennessee, Augusta Invitational, Tennessee Indoor Sprints, Atlanta Indoor Sprints and Clemson Sprints.

Megan Patrick is in her second year as an assistant coach with the Alabama rowing team. Her primary duties include serving as the Crimson Tide’s recruiting coordinator and coaching UA’s small boats.

“Megan has experience at the highest level of rowing,” head coach Larry Davis said. “What’s more, after she completed her undergraduate degree, she had the interest and fortitude to go to Europe and spend time there not only continuing her education but coxing and coaching as well.”

Prior to joining the Tide, Patrick was an intern coach at the University of Virginia, working with both the women’s and men’s rowing teams. She served as an assistant coach for the Oxford University Women’s Boat Club from 2006-09 where her record coaching the junior varsity was 2-1 for the Reserves Race. During that time, she was also the men’s and women’s coach for St. Hugh’s College Boat Club.

As a coxswain for Princeton University’s Heavyweight Men, Patrick was a three-time Eastern Sprints Champion between 1998-2001 and a silver medalist in 2000. She also earned two silver medals and a bronze at the IRAs during that time.

In 2001, she set a course record at the Eastern Sprints and competed in the nal of the Ladies Challenge Plate at Henley Royal Regatta. Patrick went on to cox for Oxford University and Oxford Brookes University. She competed in the Isis-Goldie race in 2003 and was a member of the

winning Women’s Blue Boat in 2004 and 2006, setting the Women’s Boat Race course record in 2006.

“Megan had the chance to hone her skills and eye as a coach, in addition to be able to pick up a number of degrees, including her doctorate,” Davis said. “She gives our program a little more diversity and vision as to where we want to go.”

As a ve-time Henley Royal Regatta competitor, Patrick was a Ladies Challenge Plate nalist in 2001, a Britannia Cup semi nalist in 2003, a Remenham Cup quarter nalist in 2004, a Temple Challenge Cup semi nalist in 2005, and a Henley Women’s Regatta champion in 2006.

Patrick earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Princeton in 2001 and followed that with a pair of master’s degrees from Oxford, a master’s degree from Oxford Brookes, and a doctorate in education from Oxford in 2010.

Leigh Ann Terch is in her rst season as a graduate assistant coach on the Crimson Tide’s staff. Terch’s coaching career comes after a standout four-year career as an Alabama rower, which culminated in the Birmingham, Ala., native being named to the All-Conference USA rowing squad as a senior.

“Throughout her rowing career, Leigh Ann was one of the top hustlers on the team year-in and year-out,” head coach Larry Davis said. “Her ener-gy and her enthusiasm for the sport and Alabama is a big positive for the team. With her experience with this program, there won’t be a learning curve and she’ll be a big boost to our program.”

Terch started her career by earning Alabama’s Row Tide Pride award after leading her crew to a gold-medal nish in the Grand Final of the SIRA Championships Novice 8+ race.

As a junior, Terch was once again a part of a gold-medal-winning boat at the SIRA Championships, leading the Tide’s Second Varsity 8+ to a rst-place nish.

In the classroom, Terch was a regular on the Dean’s and President’s List and earned Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association Scholar Athlete honors as well as a place on the Southeastern Con-ference Academic Honor Roll and the Conference USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll. She graduated with a bachelor’s degree in health studies

Prior to joining the Tide rowing team as a fresh-man in the fall of 2008, Terch played softball for Mountain Brook High School, serving as team captain as a senior.

2012-13 ALABAMA ROWING OUTLOOK

Continual growth is important for any team that wants to improve, but it is especially important for the 2012-13 Alabama rowing squad. To say that this year’s Crimson Tide roster looks a little young is a vast understatement, with more than 70 percent of the team coming from the freshman and sophomore class. The Tide is also looking to replace a very experienced senior class that included First Varsity 8+ and First Varsity 4+ coxswains Paige Storey and Emily LeBeau as well as All-Conference USA rower Leigh Ann Terch, who is now a graduate assistant coach for Alabama. The Tide is also missing two-year captain Kristen Iverson, as well as Audrey White, Erika Baranek, Stephanie Varner and Maria Styer, who all spent time in the First Varsity 8+ boat during their careers. “There’s no doubt that we’re young and that we have some de nite holes to ll from last year,” head coach Larry Davis said. “But because of our circumstances last year, a lot of younger rowers had a chance to gain experience in the upper boats and I think that will carry over this year.” The Tide went through a majority of the 2011-12 season trying to overcome the injury bug, which meant that the rookies of 2012 had opportunities for a higher level of experience than they might ordinarily have had in a normal season. Two members of the 2011-12 freshman class, Emily Chadwell and Logan O’Neil, nished the year in the First Varsity 8+. There was also a trio of rookies - Caroline Blackington, Alyssa Drevenak and Maureen Purcell - in the Second Varsity 8+ at the end of the 2011-12 season. Last

year’s freshmen made their biggest impact on the First Varsity 4+, where, outside of LeBeau in the coxswain seat, the entire boat - Emily Osborne, Jennifer Wagner, Jackie Woudenberg and Melissa Etter - were in their rst year with the Tide. “Our current sophomores gained a great deal of experience in their rst year with us,” Davis said. “In general, a large percentage of that class has come back ready to go, which bodes well for us moving forward.” As large and as experienced as the sophomore brigade is, that’s not to say that the upper classes aren’t prepared to lead the way. The 2012-13 senior captains, Tabitha Coleman and Jessica Parker, both earned their leadership roles throughout the rst three years of their careers, having both spent time in the First Varsity 8+. “I have faith in our captains both as rowers and as leaders,” Davis said. “There isn’t any doubt in my mind that they are ready to go out and do what they need to do as captains, be role models, and do the things we need to do as a team to develop this year.” Senior Canella Tinker, along with juniors Brianne Hadar and Lynsey Marshall, all nished 2011-12 in the First Varsity 8+ and will once again look to compete for seats in the upper boats. Senior Kiffy Balchon spent time in both the First Varsity 8+ and Second Varsity 8+ last season and will be joined in the coxswain corps by sophomores Zoe Lynch and Elizabeth Van Zandt as well as junior Bernadette Bucher. “Most of our returners are set to take on leadership responsibilities as well as be able to

help make a boat move,” Davis said. “I’m looking forward to seeing what they can do once we get to racing.” In addition to the 24 veterans, Alabama welcomes a dozen newcomers to its roster, including 11 true freshmen and one junior transfer. Making up a third of the Tide’s roster, the newcomers are a talented group who should make an immediate impact on UA’s fortunes. “This is the second year in a row that we’ve had a strong signing class and that will de nitely give us a boost, especially when this group settles into the realities of collegiate rowing,” Davis said. “We have certainly laid a solid foundation as we continue our climb up the ranks as a program.” The 12 newcomers that populated the Tide’s roster when classes began in August do not include the slew of walk-ons who will join the Novice squad in the fall. That group will be made up almost entirely of Alabama students with no rowing experience but the athletic ability to make the transition to NCAA Division I student-athlete. The Tide’s fall season will get underway in October and will feature a trio of events starting with the Chattanooga Head Race and nishing with the Head of the Chattahoochee, both in Chattanooga, Tenn. In between, Alabama will once again compete at the prestigious Head of the Charles in Cambridge, Mass. A challenging spring season wil get underway in mid-March, and both opens and closes in Oak Ridge, Tenn., with the Louisville Invitational and the Conference USA Championships, respectively.

A SHORT HISTORY OF ALABAMA ROWING

THE LAUNCH PARTY: Tuscaloosa Mayor Walt Maddox, Director of Athletics Mal Moore, former

UA President Dr. Robert E. Witt and Associate Athletics Director Marie

Robbins were all on hand for the announcement that Alabama would add

rowing as a varsity sport on the banks of the Black Warrior River in the fall

of 2005. The Black Warrior River was the scene for the historic inception of Crimson Tide rowing in October 2005. Director of Athletics Mal Moore, accompanied by former University President Robert E. Witt, stood on the river’s bank and announced the addition of rowing to the varsity lineup. With the scenic river behind them, rowing was going to the next level by becoming the 21st varsity sport at the University of Alabama.

LAYING THE FOUNDATION For over 20-plus years, the sport of rowing had been growing in the Tuscaloosa community and with rowing’s popularity expanding on the national scene, it almost seemed as if a varsity team had not come soon enough. At the Capstone, club rowing began in 1987. Mainly a social club whose intentions were to go out and have fun, rowing at Alabama was no different than racquetball or rugby – among team members there was no previous rowing experience or real desire to succeed on the water. A few athletes with rowing experience joined the club in

1997, bringing with them a desire for change. The team adopted a more competitive attitude, spent more time practicing, and began expanding its fundraising efforts. In 1998, Larry Davis and wife, Vicki, moved to Tuscaloosa so she could take on a new job, leaving the former rowing coach looking for local work. When news of the University’s co-ed club rowing program’s need for a coach came to light, it seemed like a comfortable t for the former University of

Virginia rower. In January 1998, Davis was introduced as the team’s volunteer coach. “Like any club that has never been organized or supervised, there was a learning curve,” Davis said. “Many of them had never been in a competitive sport before.” In the meantime, Marie Robbins and others in the athletics department at Alabama were having discussions about adding a 21st varsity sport. There were a number of candidates to ll the slot, but Robbins, the senior woman administrator, could not get past the stories she was hearing about a successful club that was making the best of its limited resources a little way up the Black Warrior River.

“We started to delve into the issue about 2003,” Robbins said. “We began to talk about the opportunity to add an additional sport for women and provide additional participants the opportunity to compete.” With a program and sport already in mind, it seemed natural to Robbins and those at the University to elevate the program’s coach as well. Davis had turned rowing into a grassroots success on campus, building up a team of college students that was bringing home numerous medals, as well as back-to-back points trophies at the Augusta Invitational in Augusta, Ga. “We looked at a lot of coaches internally and externally and ultimately at the end of the day we decided that coach Davis, in terms of local knowledge and familiarity with the club program and local operation of the river also had a wealth of collegiate experience under his belt,” Robbins said. “For coach [Mal] Moore, Larry’s loyalty to the university was helpful in that for 10 years he worked in addition to his paid job to volunteer and coach these young ladies who had come out for the club team.” Davis’ resume included head coaching jobs at Marist College and the University of Alabama-Huntsville as well as an assistant coaching spot on the 1983 U.S. Men’s National Rowing Team. As of February 2006, Davis would be able to add one more school to that already impressive list. For a school with little experience in rowing a seasoned coach like Larry Davis was the obvious answer, Robbins said. “With Coach Davis, it’s local knowledge,” she said. “Having been here for 10 years helps those of us with less knowledge about the sport.”

STARTING OUT The transition from club to NCAA Division I proved challenging. The team was forced to move on without former club athletes who could not adjust to the commitment necessary to varsity-level rowing. Davis set up a challenging rst-year schedule to help with the transition, including competitions against notable Division-I crews such as Notre Dame and Cincinnati as well as Murray State and Creighton, two

schools that had previously beaten Alabama’s club team. “There was no uff in the schedule, but there were some teams I thought we could beat,” Davis said. To the surprise of many in collegiate rowing, they did just that, defeating past foes Murray State and Creighton and coming from behind to beat the Bearcats of Cincinnati. Alabama medaled in all four events at the Head of the South Regatta, winning two of them. The Tide also beat schools such as North Carolina and Duke while giving Notre Dame a bit of a scare, holding close to them in a couple of events. Success came quickly to the rst-year program despite unfamiliarity with the sport by both the athletes and the athletic department’s support staff. Rowing was a sport that Robbins and her colleagues had to learn the nuances of - things such as what equipment and facilities were necessary and how many staff members to hire were among the initial challenges. “The biggest challenge is attitude,” Davis said. “When you’re dealing with walk-ons, I think a lot of people don’t understand the sport and how much hard work is involved. When you take somebody who is used to a club mentality, the varsity level is much more intense. It takes athletes who are driven, dedicated and committed. It takes a lot of hard work, focus, discipline and sacri ce. “What I’m asking the students to do is move a boat over a mile and a quarter distance as fast as they can, which means they’re running at out for somewhere near eight minutes,” Davis said. “It’s enjoyable in one way, but it’s very painful. It’s not something your average person is going to want to do.” In the classroom, seven rowers earned 2007 Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association Scholar-Athlete Award while nine earned a place on the Southeastern Conference Academic Honor Roll. The Tide followed up a successful rst season spring with an extremely successful fall, opening the season with a pair of top-three nishes and a silver-medal nish all

at the Head of the Charles Regatta. A gold-medal nish followed at the Hobbs Island Regatta in Huntsville. The team continued to excel in the spring of 2008,

SMILESTONE: One of the early milestones of the Crimson Tide Rowing team was winning a silver medal at the 2007 Head of the Charles Regatta which is one of the largest and most pres-tigious regattas in the world.

winning race after race during the dual-meet season, including a program- rst sweep against UNC on their home water at Chapel Hill. Strong dual meets propelled Alabama into the 2008 postseason, where they earned a silver medal at the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Championships and nished second overall at the SIRA Championships, a major accomplishment for such a young program. At the Dad Vail College Championships, Alabama continued to take big strides, reaching the Grand Final of the Novice 8+ race, taking fourth overall. Individually, Bryn Crawford became the rst UA rower to earn a place on the Collegiate Coaches Rowing Association’s All-South Region team. In the classroom, nine rowers earned the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association Scholar-Athlete Award while 16 were named to the Southeastern Conference Academic Honor Roll. The Tide kept stride and continued its winning ways, carrying over into its third season, a season emblazoned in bronze, silver and gold. Success came early as the women earned a pair of bronze medals and seven top-10 nishes at the Chattanooga Head Race to open the season. In their second race of the season, the squad split up with the varsity crews heading to Cambridge Mass., for the prestigious Head of the Charles Regatta and the novice crews heading to Huntsville, Ala., for the Hobbs Island Regatta. Both teams experienced great success with the varsity squad placing 10th, beating 35 other teams at one of the most competitive races, while the novice crews brought home rst and second place in the Novice 8+ race. The Tide earned ve top-three nishes, including a pair of gold medals, at the Head of the Tennessee Regatta.

Closing out the fall season, the novice squad performed exceptionally well, bringing home three medals - a bronze, silver and gold - at the Head of the Hooch Regatta. As the 2009 spring season got under way, Alabama made major strides, achieving success in meets against the likes of Clemson, Kansas State, Tennessee, North Carolina and Southern Methodist. The success against these established crews propelled the team to the postseason, earning two Grand Final berths at the SIRA Championship Regatta. As they continued through the postseason the team would see two crews head to the semi nals and one boat head to the petite nals at the Dad Vail Regatta. The girls advanced four crews to the nals of the South/Central Sprint Championships to cap off a very successful season. “This season was a transition where most of the club athletes were gone and we didn’t have as many seniors,” Davis said. “We increased our boat speed but we also toughened up our schedule. It was probably a little frustrating for the girls because we were going faster but we weren’t seeing some of the wins that we saw the year before because we were now rowing a lot

of the top-20 teams in the United States.” Academically, nine rowers earned the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association Scholar-Athlete Award and 24 UA rowers earned a place on the Southeastern Conference Academic Honor Roll. GROWING THEPROGRAM From joining Conference USA to enjoying their rst gold medal at the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships, Alabama rowing’s fourth season was a season full of rsts. The rst group of fourth-year seniors provided the Crimson Tide with the most experience at the highest level since the program’s start, which paid dividends right away with bronze medal in the Club 8+ competition at the prestigious Head of the Charles Regatta early in the 2009 fall season. Alabama closed out the

fall with a gold-medal sweep of the Secret City Regatta races. Alabama started the 2010 spring season off with a sweep, taking rst place in all of its races in a home dual meet against Kansas State. The Tide secured another rst by taking gold in the Varsity 4+ at the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships. At the 2010 South/Central Sprint Championships, Alabama earned a place in the nals of all its races. The South/Central Sprints also served as the rst Conference USA Rowing Championships, marking the rst time that Alabama participated in a conference event. The Tide nished sixth in C-USA while junior Laura Skaggs earned All-Conference USA honors. On the academic side of the ledger, Alabama was one of only two teams with three rowers on the Conference USA All-Academic Team as seniors Stacey Ogle, Bailey Sanders and Katie Spohr all came away with the honor. Other classroom accolades included 11 rowers, the most of any team in the nation, earning the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association Scholar-Athlete Award. A program-best 27 Alabama rowers earned a place on the Southeastern Conference Academic Honor Roll.

The Crimson Tide’s fth season was a quantam leap forward, including top honors at a national regatta and winning a trio of gold medals from the SIRA Championships.

“The 2010-11 season was a huge step forward for us,” Davis said. “It was big in terms of knowing what it takes to be competitive and then being able go out and execute it. I think in the past we might have had an idea of what it took to be successful, but that was the rst time we were able to bring it all together and execute on a consistent basis. Alabama posted a huge win at the 2011 San Diego Crew Classic, an event billed as “America’s Premier Spring Regatta,” when its First Varsity 8+ boat took rst place in its race, winning the

SeaWorld Cal Cup. Alabama’s squad was among more than 4,000 rowers out on Crown Point Shores on Mission Bay. “We attacked a bit more than we did in the prelims and had a more aggressive race plan in nals,” Davis said after the race. “The Varsity 8+ dug down a little deeper and did what they were capable of doing. They made a really good move about midway through the race, pulling ahead, and really pushed through the third 500.” Following its success at the San Diego Crew Classic, Alabama’s Varsity 8+ was named the inaugural Conference USA Boat of the Week as well as Row2K.com’s Crew of the Week. Alabama followed up their 2010 Varsity 4+ SIRA Championships gold medal by repeating the feat in 2011, as well as bringing home gold in the Varsity 8+ and Second Varsity 8+ races, in the midst of rough weather conditions. “To sweep all the Varsity Open races is a really big step forward for our program,” Davis said after SIRAs. “There aren’t too many programs that have done that, so we were pretty happy with that.” The Tide was looking forward to carrying its success into the 2011 Conference USA Championships, but the April 27th tornado that ripped through Tuscaloosa cut the academic semester and the rowing team’s season short. It also trimmed a dual meet with Clemson and the Tide’s second appearance at the C-USA Championships from Alabama’s schedule. “We were certainly disappointed to not be able to carry our success into the postseason, but it was still a very good year for us,” Davis said. “To be able to go and travel across the country and compete at a very high level

against teams that are making it to the NCAAs, and to turn around and not only win one race but the three open championship races for varsity women at the SIRA Championships, shows that we learned how to execute in a high pressure situation at a high level.” Senior Alissa Kranz earned 2011 All-Conference USA honors and became the second Alabama rower to earn CRCA All-South Region honors. On the academic side of the ledger, Alabama became only team to put three rowers on the Conference USA All-Academic Team each of the rst two years of the program when senior Jessica Allaway, Kranz and junior Stephanie Varner came away with the honor in 2011. Other classroom accolades included eight rowers earning 2011 Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association Scholar-Athlete Award honors and 17 rowers earning a place on the SEC Academic Honor Roll. Allaway also earned the 2011 Brad Davis SEC Community Service Award, which earned her a $3,000 postgraduate scholarship while the team received the athletic department’s community service award for the fourth year in a row. Despite having a team slowed by injuries, Alabama’s sixth season provided the young program a clinic in ghting through adversity. In their rst race of the 2011 fall season, the Chattanooga Head Race, the Tide earned two medals, taking gold in the Novice 8+ race and silver in the First Varsity 8+ race. Alabama also medaled in the Club 8+ race at the prestigious Head of the Charles Regatta. The 2012 spring season showed improvements, with the Novice 8+ boat taking rst place at the Oak Ridge Invitational and the Second Varsity 8+ nishing second. Returning to the San Diego Crew Classic, Alabama again saw success with the First Varsity 8+ posting fth- and sixth-place nishes and the Second Varsity 8+

posting a sixth-place nish. The Tide had a solid showing at the Conference USA Championships, nishing just one point out of sixth place to take seventh overall on Melton Hill Lake. Senior Leigh Ann Terch earned All-Conference USA honors. On the academic side, Alabama placed two rowers on the 2012

Conference USA All-Academic Team, marking the third year in a row that the Tide placed multiple athletes on the list. Senior Stephanie Varner earned her second consecutive unanimous selection while junior Canella Tinker made her debut. Other classroom accolades included ve rowers earning the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association Scholar-Athlete Award while 17 Alabama rowers earned a place on the SEC Academic Honor Roll and 23 were named to the C-USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll.

MOVING FORWARD As the Alabama rowing program continues to make a name for itself, recruiting continues to play a large factor in achieving success. The coaches know that success does not always come quickly, but with time and patience all the hard work can pay off. It is a process that has helped such a young program blossom into a legitimate contender. “What we tell recruits is that they can have a bigger impact here,” Davis said. “But they have to have the patience and insight to make things happen, and they have to want to be a leader. They’re not just going to t into a group, they are going to help elevate that group and build the tradition.” For those who join the Tide, the challenge is to never rest, to never slow down and to keep the success rolling along to ever higher levels. “As a team, we are learning how to work at this level,” Davis said. “We are learning how to not only train extremely hard, but to also do that over a sustained period of time. “The challenge is to get this team to a point where it is ready to compete at the highest level. Each new group has to realize that we can’t be satis ed with where we’ve been and still get to where we want to go.” For the Tide, success is not measured by each individual race or every nish line crossed. Success comes from a consistency and dedication that begins in the weight rooms and on the water at practice and is carried over to race day. Consistency is continually winning medals when no one expects you to. Consistency is Alabama Rowing.

ALABAMA ROWING AND CONFERENCE USA Even in its rst year, Alabama rowing enjoyed all of the amenities of the 20 other Crimson Tide athletic programs, from getting a top-notch staff and equipment to having access to UA’s state-of-the-art academic center, training room and weight room. However, there was one thing that the rowing team was missing: conference competition. In the SEC, where the rest of the Tide’s teams compete, only Tennessee sponsors rowing on the NCAA Division I level. Though the Tide and Lady Vols do have a growing rivalry, it’s not the same as competing in a fully developed conference. In 2010, during Alabama’s fourth year as an NCAA Division I rowing program, that all changed. Nine schools came together to compete under the Conference USA banner. Alabama and Tennessee, along with Big 12 schools Texas, Kansas, Kansas State and Oklahoma, joined as af liate programs with member schools SMU, Tulsa and Central Florida to create a “super conference” and began competing for a conference championship. “It’s a good strong group,” Davis said. “You’ve got some teams who have been in the NCAA before like Tennessee, Central Florida and Texas. As far as teams that are in the mix right now for NCAA slots, Tennessee is a strong contender and some of the other schools are close, Texas and Central Florida for example.”

Of the nine Conference USA rowing programs, seven are more than 10 years old, though none have clocked over 20 years. All nine are considered strong programs on the upswing. “Any one of these teams in a given year can be tough,” Davis said. “Anyone of the Conference USA teams can certainly give you a ght all the way down the race course.”

The NCAA Rowing Championship eld, which was lled by at-large bids prior to this season, will begin to extend automatic bids to conferences in 2013. Joining C-USA gives not only a shot at an automatic NCAA bid, but a strong base of competition year-in and year-out. The importance of conference af liation goes beyond the chance at an NCAA Championship automatic bid and extends into the drive and competition that conference competition brings for a program, plus the built-in rivalries and the focus that goes into a season. “It gives us an ability to focus,” Davis said. “We have something to shoot for. Before, we didn’t really have a true championship at the end of the season to shoot for. With other things that will be changing with NCAA Rowing, there are going to be opportunities in the coming years where if you win your conference championship, you will get an automatic quali cation in the NCAA big process. With teams like Texas and Tennessee,

who won the Conference USA title in each of the rst three years, we have a very good league.” Alabama is keeping its eye on the prize of not only having a chance to advance to the NCAA Championships, but also bring home conference gold and a trophy for the boathouse. “It is a really big step to have the ability to win the conference, with some of the teams that are in there, and have an opportunity to get a boat to the NCAA Championships,” Davis said. “It gives us an avenue to focus our energy and know what we have to do to achieve that kind of excellence.” The Tide and the eight other C-USA teams have competed for conference titles at Melton Hill Lake in Oak Ridge, Tenn., for the past three seasons. The Tide nished sixth in 2010 and saw Laura Skaggs earn All-Conference USA honors. The Tide did not compete at the 2011 conference championships in the aftermath of a devastating tornado that tore through Tuscaloosa, which left the team safe and largely unaffected, but cut the program’s season short. For her work during the regular season, Alissa Kranz was named the 2011 All-Conference USA Team. Alabama returned to the conference championships in 2012, nishing seventh, with senior Leigh Ann Terch earning All-Conference USA honors.

ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE AND THE CRIMSON TIDE For coach Larry Davis, the goal is simple. He wants his student-athletes to leave Alabama with medals around their neck and a diploma under their arm. Success, by that criteria, has been immediate for the rowing program. “One thing that we have laid as a foundation for this program is to be the absolute best in all areas, athletically and academically,” Davis said. Giving credence to that statement is the fact that in 2010, Alabama led the nation in Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association Scholar Athlete Awards, with a program-high 11 Crimson Tide rowers earning the honor, tying UA with Brown University for the national lead. “To lead the nation in this award speaks volumes about the commitment placed on academics at the University of Alabama,” Davis said. “It also shows that as we improve on the water, our dedication to academics hasn’t wavered in the slightest.” To earn CRCA honors, a rower must hold a 3.5 grade point average for her career, be at least a sophomore in eligibility and have competed in 75 percent of the team’s spring races. In Alabama’s six-year history as an NCAA Division I program, 26 Tide rowers have earned a total of 48 CRCA Scholar Athlete honors. On a conference level, Alabama’s rowers have been named to the Southeastern Conference Academic Honor Roll 109 times, including an amazing 27 who made the list in 2010. In 2009, Stacey Ogle became the rst Tide rower to earn a place on the prestigious CoSIDA Academic All-District At-Large second team, an award that spans several NCAA Division I sports. In 2012, Alabama earned two spots on the

15-member Conference USA All-Academic Team, marking the third year in a row that the Tide placed multiple athletes on the list. Alabama is tied with Kansas and Oklahoma for the most honorees in the award’s three-year history, with eight selections. To make the ballot for the C-USA all-academic team, a rower has to have earned a 3.2 cumulative grade point average or better and is a key contributor to her team. The team is then selected by the league’s sports information directors for rowing. In the three-year history of the award, two UA rowers have been unanimous C-USA All-Academic squad selections - Katie Spohr in 2010 and Stephanie Varner in 2012. Varner also became the rst Alabama rower to earn a place on the C-USA

All-Academic Team more than once, earning her second consecutive nod as a senior. Spohr, Ogle and Bailey Sanders were named to the inaugural C-USA All-Academic squad as seniors in 2010. Alissa Kranz and Varner were named to the team in 2011. Varner was joined by Canella Tinker on the prestigious list in 2012. While the Conference USA All-Academic Team is limited to rowers, Alabama athletes also earned recognition on two Conference USA-wide lists in 2012. A total of seven UA rowers earned the C-USA Commissioner’s Medal, which requires a 3.75 grade point average while 23 Tide rowers earned a place on the C-USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll, which requires a 3.0 GPA. The secret behind the academic success for Tide student-athletes is really no secret at all. Alabama’s Center of Athletic Student Services, located in the state-of-the-art Bill Battle Academic Center, housed within Paul W. Bryant Hall, stands

ready to help Tide student-athletes get the most out of their academic experience at one of the nation’s nest universities.

CASS is headed by Assistant Athletics Director for Student Services Jon Dever. Dever is assisted by Tyler Roberts, rowing’s academic advisor, as well as Heather Anders, Tom Buttram, Brenda Elliott, Fern Hampton, Lance Walker, Lisa Patrick, Evan Cardwell, Molly Dowd, Stephanie Godfrey and Joy Burroughs. Joining this group are ve interns and more than 60 part-time tutors. The entire operation is housed in the Bryant Hall Academic Center. The CASS staff works as a liaison between the athletics department, undergraduate divisions and the administrative of ces of the university. The staff assists with class scheduling and registration, makes sure all athletes are maintaining satisfactory progress toward their degrees, monitors academic eligibility and provides career counseling. The advisors also secure tutors and schedule study sessions. From the moment a recruit rst walks on to campus to the moment an athlete graduates with diploma in hand, the academic services provided are outstanding. For the rst year at the Capstone, freshmen and junior college transfers are required to attend nightly study halls. After that, the attendance is based on the individual’s GPA and study needs. The dedicated CASS staff can only give guidance and direction. Achievement is left in the hands of the student-athlete. If an athlete wishes to succeed in the classroom then Alabama’s CASS will provide them with every opportunity to achieve the highest goals.

From the day the rst boat went on the river, Alabama rowing has dedicated itself to excellence in all things. Success and excellence have come swiftly during the program’s six years. On the water, the Crimson Tide has made an immediate impact, climbing the ranks at the top regattas and sweeping several dual meets. In the classroom, Tide rowers already rank among the best, turning in outstanding grades in some of the University’s toughest majors. The Tide doesn’t stop there, though. In only six years as a varsity team, the rowers have amassed the most community outreach hours of any team at the Capstone four times. The rowing program volunteers on a regular basis with a wide variety of organizations. Overall, rowers participated in over 5,000 hours over the last six years. “As a program, it is important to us, that our student-athletes excel in all areas of the collegiate experience,” head coach Larry Davis said. “We want them to be at their best athletically and academically, but more than that, we want them to understand and embrace the concept of being active and positive members of their community. I am very pleased with how our ladies have responded to that challenge and the work they do in the University and Tuscaloosa communities.” Individually, Jessica Allaway collected the highest community service award offered by the

Southeastern Conference when she received the 2011 Brad Davis SEC Community Service Award and the postgraduate scholarship that goes along with the award. Over the past ve years, when the Alabama Athletics Department has singled out individual student-athletes for their work in the community, the rowing team has again led the way with 10 honorees in that span. In 2011, Kendal Williamson earned the Crimson Tide’s Community Outreach Award and 2010, when six UA student-athletes were

honored, half that number - Tacoma Morrisey, Jessica Autrey and Erika Baranek - came from the rowing team. During the 2008-09 school year, 10 student-athletes were honored for their work in the community, including four rowers - Amy Allison, Autrey, Baranek and Katie Smith. In 2007-08, rowers Amy Alison and Katie Tippey were among the six Tide athletes honored with the Tide’s Community Outreach Award. Alabama rowers were extremely active in the Tuscaloosa community in the aftermath of the April 2011 tornado that ripped through Tuscaloosa, leaving a trail of destruction that left the UA campus unscathed, but not the surrounding town. In October 2011, Logan O’Neil and her father, Tim, along with teammates Ashley Allison and Erika Baranek and coaches Davis, Megan Patrick and Derek Tuten, delivered more than 2,500 used elementary books collected during the late spring and summer, to the Tuscaloosa County School System for use at the schools that were damaged and/or destroyed during tornado. The rowing team also takes part in Alabama Athletics Power of Pink initiative, which raises awareness in the ght against breast cancer, as well as a wide range of projects sponsored by the Alabama Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.

The Bill Battle Academic Center at Paul W. Bryant Hall is the crown jewel in Alabama’s $125 million Crimson Tradition building initiative. Through the auspices of the Crimson Tradition Fund, Alabama took its former athletic dorm and converted it into a 55,000-square foot state-of-the-art facility that bene ts the more than 500 Crimson Tide student-athletes. The building’s many amenities includes a 48-seat computer lab with new equipment. The computer lab also houses 25 laptop computers that can be checked out by student-athletes for use on road trips. There are math, English and writing labs as well as individual study rooms. The athletic academic advi-sor of ces are also housed in the building, along with several study lounges, two 50-seat classrooms and a 140-seat classroom. The classrooms feature cutting edge teaching devices, including digital overhead projectors and “smart boards” that allow instructors to interact with students on the go. Throughout the building, there are 16 information stations that provide student-athletes with news about tutorials, study sessions and even practice schedules.

It is one of the best practice and competitive courses in the nation, giving the University of Alabama’s young rowing team an immediate boost. The Black Warrior River, where the Crimson Tide practices and competes, features high banks, with long, protected straightaways and minimal current which makes it a rower’s dream. The Tide also bene ts from having the river largely to itself. Alabama is also fortunate that the river is dotted with prime viewing areas for dual meets and regattas, including The Park at Manderson Landing, which sits near the nish line of most of the Tide’s

home events. With its multi-tiered slope down to the edge of the river, the park is a natural ‘stadium’ for cheering on the Crimson Tide. Already endowed with one of the nation’s top competition and practice venues in the Black Warrior River, plans are underway to build a state-of-the-art boathouse for the University of Alabama rowing program that will encompass everything the Tide needs to continue moving up through the ranks of collegiate rowing. Another step toward that new facility was taken in the fall of 2012 when the location and architect for the new boathouse

was chosen and the project of cially got underway. When completed, the boathouse is projected to include a walking bridge that will connect the facility to campus. It will include three boat bays, a repair bay as well as storage for the coaches’ launches. The project also includes an access way to the Tide’s specialized oating dock facilities on the river. The new boathouse will combine with the Tide’s already stellar athletic training, strength and conditioning and academic facilities in providing Alabama rowers with the best of all things.

ALABAMA ROWING ON THE BLACK WARRIOR RIVER

8+ and 4+: Eights (8+) and fours (4+) are the most common collegiate competitions and the two events held at the NCAA Championships. The plus indicates a coxswain on board. Blade: The end of the oar that pulls the boat through the water.Bow: The forward end of the boat that crosses the nish line rst; the rower in the seat nearest the forward end of a shell, who typically has a quick catch, stable technique and a shorter arc.Bucket Rigging: Two riggers on the same side next to each other instead of alternated.Coxswain (cox): Person who steers the shell from a seat located in the stern or a lying position in the bow.Ergs: Short for ergometer; individualized rowing simulators that help strength and conditioning.Lightweight: A crew on which each athlete weighs under a speci c amount (130 pounds for women).Novice: A rower in the rst year of collegiate competition.Regatta: The name of rowing events in which several crews compete.Repechage: A second-chance race for those crews that did not automatically advance to the nals of an event.

Rigger: The part that attaches an oar to the shell.

Run: The distance the shell moves during one stroke.Sculling: Type of rowing where each rower uses two oars.Shell: Boat used in the rowing races. It seats nine people for an Eight and ve people for a Four, and ranges in length from 45 feet for a Four to 58 feet for an Eight.Sprints: Used in collegiate competition, this type of race features a course that is 2000 meters long, usually with four to six unmarked or buoyed lanes and a oating or staked start.

Stern: The back of the boat; the end the rowers face during competitions.Stroke: A complete cycle of moving the shell through the water; the rower who sits closest to the stern, looks directly at the coxswain in a stern-coxed boat and sets the rhythm for the shell.Sweeping: Type of rowing where each rower uses one oar.Varsity: The collegiate rower who competes beyond the novice level.
