The AFLV National House Directors Conference exists to stimulate the growth and development of fraternity and soror-ity house directors by promoting leader-ship, fraternal values and resource man-agement. The educational programming at the con-ference is the foundation of the entire experience. It is the premier opportu-nity for house directors to gain valuable, tangible skills and keep current on issues that impact today’s ever-changing cam-pus environment. New or experienced, the conference provides each participant with a wealth of knowledge and resourc-es to enhance an already developed skill set.Participants will develop skills in prob-lem-solving, communication, resource al-location, and facility management. They will leave with a better understanding of issues and trends affecting higher educa-tion. EDUCATIONALProgrammingSince 1992 we have been planning and implementing the National House Director Conference. We understand what a valuable asset a well-prepared house director is for the fraternities and sororities to which they serve. Professional house directors pro-vide a safe, constant, and stable home for students within an envi-ronment that supports both aca-demic and experiential learning. The presence of mature and ex-perienced house directors not only reassures parents, but also supports the goals of the alumni and house corpora-tions and even can increase retention to graduation.The conference exists to assist house di-rectors in improving their skills and ef-ficiency while becoming more aware of the value and importance of their roles. House directors learn to create appro-priate and effective relationships with their many constituents: parents, alumni, vendors, faculty, house employees, and residents. Our goal is to provide house directors with the opportunity to devel-op a unique and comprehensive blend of skills and knowledge that encourages teamwork and effective use of resources while supporting the shared missions of fraternities, sororities, and universities.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND THIS CONFERENCE?This conference provides the perfect professional development experience for house directors, potential house direc-tors, house corporation officers, frater-nity or sorority headquarters staff, and volunteers who work with house man-agement.

NYC POST CONFERENCE

A renaissance city in the midst of the beautiful Northeast, Providence is a compact, thriving city that neatly cross-stitches the fabric of New England history with an edgy and vibrant culinary, historic, artistic, musical, and cultural scene. Blessed with a rich history, Providence is home to the first Baptist church in America, over 100 houses dat-ing from the colonial period, and a church bell cast by Paul Revere. Set along the Prov-

idence and Woo-n a s q u a t u c k e t Rivers on seven hills of tree-lined streets, this colo-nial city is full of the charm and beauty so famous in the Northeast.

PRE-CONFERENCE TOUR: GILDED AGE MANSIONS OF NEWPORT, RI The 2011 Pre-Conference Tour is a short trip to Newport, Rhode Island, a center of trade, culture, wealth, and military activity for over 300 years. Newport is a true sightseeing mec-ca. Historical firsts abound in this small city: America’s first naval college and syna-gogue are here, as are the oldest library in the country and one of the oldest continu-ously operating taverns. This year’s trip includes a tour of the city’s famous mansions dating from the Gilded Age of the late 1800’s. Each summer, the rich and famous flocked to Newport to beat New York’s heat. The tour will include a drive along Ten Mile Ocean Drive and Bellevue Avenue, as well as a tour of the famous Vanderbilt home, the Breakers. The trip begins Thursday, June 23rd at 8:00 am and ends about 1:00 pm. The conference opening session will begin at 3:00 pm.

Registration is $75 and includes transportation, a guided tour of Newport, the audio tour of the Breakers, and lunch.

Providence is served by the T.F. Green Air-port (PVD), which is located in Warwick, Rhode Island.

Warwick is 20 minutes away from the conference hotel in Providence.

Fly to and from T.F. Green Airport (PVD) and take the shuttle to Providence to the Providence Biltmore Hotel. The shuttle operates between 5:00 am and 7:00 pm. The fee is $11 per passenger each way. Guests planning to return to the airport on Sunday, June 26th, should make round trip shuttle reservations.

Even if you’re visiting New York for the first time, you’ve undoubtedly seen some version of this city before. Its images are ubiquitous—in movies and on television, in novels high- and low-brow, in songs, in classic photographs, and on the nightly news. You’ve probably watched enough Times Square ball drops and late-show lead-ins to anticipate its blaring horns, mega-watt neon lights, and skyscraper canyons—and, to be sure, New York will deliver them all. You could spend your whole life exploring New York and never exhaust its riches. With its city sky-line, great museums, fabulous stores, and bright lights of Broadway, New York is a city of superlatives. We are going to have a fabulous stay in the city that never sleeps; the opportunities are endless!

Our time in the Big Apple will i n c l u d e site seeing, a trip to Radio City Music Hall for the o p e n i n g of the new Cirque du Soleil show, a chance to

visit the Today Show, and enjoy a leisurely guided tour through the theatre district. Attendees will also visit a Broadway Re-hearsal Studio for private entertainment including an in-depth discussion with a leading cast member from a hit Broadway

musical. A demonstration of the sensual art of Theatrical Flamenco dancing and singing accompanied on the piano by the keyboard artist from “Wicked” will be the highlight of the day.

For theater aficionados or fans of Broad-way, attendees will have the option of purchasing Broadway show tickets for Tuesday, the final night of the official visit. AFLV will provide a list of several available shows, which will be posted, in order for guests to select the show of their choice. Participants can preference three shows. While first choices cannot be guaranteed, the earlier you register and pay for the show ticket, the more likely you are to receive your first choice.

The traditional closing dinner will be a once-in-a-lifetime event at one of the city’s most famous restaurants, located in the heart of the theatre district. Dinner will take place on Tuesday night before the Broadway shows.

The opening session begins Thursday, June 23, at 3:00 pm. Following a recep-tion at 6:00 pm, the opening dinner will be at the Johnson and Wales Culinary Museum. Friday morning is full of educational sessions. In the afternoon, participants and guests will enjoy lunch and a guided tour of the unique and historic city. Saturday is dedicated to educational pro-grams and includes a networking lunch.Sunday, June 26th, following educational sessions, the location of the 2012 confer-ence will be announced and there will be a special closing breakfast. The confer-ence will end at around 11:00 am.

FIRST TIME PARTICIPANTS ORIENTATIONFirst timers are invited to attend an ori-entation session on Thursday, June 23rd, from 12:30 pm to 2:00 pm. The session will provide attendees with the knowl-edge and background needed to be suc-cessful and fully participate in the confer-ence. The House Director Manual and

other resources will be reviewed. There is no charge for the session, but partici-pants are asked to make a reservation.

GUESTS One of the nicest features of the confer-ence is the opportunity to bring a guest.The AFLV National House Director Conference started a tradition many years ago of allowing friends and family to join participants at the conference and would like to honor that tradition again this year. Please consider inviting a friend or family member to accompany you to the conference or on the Pre-Conference or Post-Conference Trips. Guests en-joy the same benefits as conference at-tendees for the Pre-Conference Trip and Post-Conference Trip. During the con-ference, guests are welcome to join their host/hostess at all the meal functions and for the city tour. Guests are on their own to enjoy the sites during the educational sessions. The fee for guests is $275.
