Since 1992, we have hosted the Fraternal House Directors Conference which helps fraternity/sorority housing professionals improve their skills and efficiency while becoming more aware of the value and importance of their roles. The Fraternal Housing Conference is the premier opportunity for fraternity and sorority House Directors to gain valuable skills and keep up with the issues that impact them in today’s ever changing campus environment.

CONFERENCE GOALSAt the conference, housing professionals of all types will learn to create appropriate and effective relationships with their many constituencies (students, parents, alumni, faculty, vendors, and house employees). The goal of the conference is to provide housing professionals with unique and comprehensive skills and knowledge that encourage teamwork, leadership, fraternal values, and effective use of resources while supporting the shared mission of fraternities/sororities and the university.

Conference participants will develop skills in problem-solving, communication, resource allocation, and facility management and will leave the conference with a better understanding of issues and trends affecting higher education.

EDUCATION The conference education draws from major areas of focus that housing professionals have identified as their key interests. Some of the topics we plan to discuss at this year’s conference include:

THURSDAY, JUNE 25DOWNTOWN DINNER CRUISE A vibrant setting enhanced by dazzling city sights and city lights. This cruise on the Willamette River goes through the city and underneath Portland’s beautiful city bridges. An evening filled to the brim with festive cuisine, locally sourced and prepared fresh on board, entertainment, and live performances.

FRIDAY, JUNE 24BUS TOUR OF PORTLAND FEATURING STOPS AT PORTLAND ROSE GARDEN & JAPANESE GARDEN Portland’s International Rose Test Garden, unofficially known as the Portland Rose Garden, features more than 10,000 roses and spectacular views of downtown and Mount Hood. The Portland Japanese Garden is a haven of meticulously maintained, tranquil beauty. Proclaimed one of the most authentic Japanese gardens outside of Japan.

PRE-CONFERENCE: THURSDAY, JUNE 25PITTOCK MANSION & URBAN WINERY TOUR The Pittock Mansion was home to Portland pioneers Henry and Georgiana Pittock from 1914 to 1919. During the late 1800s and early 1900s, their lives and work paralleled the growth of Portland from a small Northwest town site to a thriving city with a quarter million population. After the tour, the group will visit an Urban Winery for a tour with wine tasting and lunch.

SUNDAY, JUNE 26COLUMBIA RIVER GORGE & WATERFALLS TOURPlummeting 620 feet from its origins on Larch Mountain, Multnomah Falls is the second highest year-round waterfall in the United States. Nearly two million visitors a year come to see this ancient waterfall making it Oregon’s number one public destination. Fed by underground springs from Larch Mountain, the flow over the falls varies usually being highest during winter and spring.

MONDAY, JUNE 27OREGON COAST & OLD GROWTH FOREST The perfect combination of stunning Oregon Coast and coastal old growth forest filled with Cedars, Douglas firs, and giant old growth Stika Spruce Trees! The Oregon coastline is graced with unforgettable vistas, dramatic cliffs, offshore monolith, and beaches. Stops include Oswald State Park, charming town of Cannon Beach, and Haystack Rock Marine Sanctuary.

TUESDAY, JUNE 28WILLAMETTE VALLEY WINE TOURSit back and enjoy the best wines on this distinguished wine tasting tour through Oregon’s Willamette Valley. Located less than an hour from Portland, The Willamette Valley is home to hundreds of vineyards and six distinct American Viticultural Areas. Sample the pinots that have put this wine country on the map and enjoy a day amidst the beauty of wine country.

During the conference, your guest will join you for all the scheduled meals (opening dinner, two lunches, and the closing brunch) and the city tour. SCHOLARSHIPSWe are pleased to continue to offer the Shelley Sutherland Scholarship. In honor of Shelley, a longtime leader in the fraternal community, these scholarships are specifically designed for those participating in the Fraternal Housing Conference.

The conference will be held at the Embassy Suites Portland - Washington Square, located beside Washington Square shopping mall. This unique location offers central access to some of the best-known Portland attractions. Each attendee is responsible for making his/her hotel reservations.

Room rates: Two Double Beds: $174/night plus taxes and feesKing Bed: $164/night plus taxes and fees

AFLV has reserved a limited number of rooms at this special contracted rate. Rooms are available on a first come/first serve basis.

Travel into the Portland International Airport (PDX). Attendees should arrive prior to sessions beginning at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 23. To get to the Embassy Suites Portland – Washington Square hotel from the airport, taxis are located center section of the airport terminal’s lower roadway on the baggage claim level. Alternatively, shared-ride shuttles are available at a less expensive cost.

The conference will end on Sunday, June 26 at 12:00 p.m. Departing flights should be booked after 2:30 p.m. that Sunday for those not staying the for the post conference. Post conference attendees should book departing flights for Wednesday, June 29.
