Dear Partners,From the Director

scott sabin

As we look back on the past year, we have much to be grateful for. Thanks to your help, the expertise of our

field staff, and God’s grace, we surpassed our program goals for 2011. We are humbled and thankful for our

partnership with you in this work of transforming the lives of the rural poor.

Plant With Purpose focuses on addressing the root causes of poverty – holistic development as opposed

to disaster relief. However, the 2010 earthquake in Haiti demanded a massive and immediate humanitarian

response, and drew us into the world of emergency relief. We were able to quickly raise and put into place

$1 million in disaster recovery programs and garnered additional funding for our existing programs in Haiti.

With the emergency over, support for our 2011 fiscal year returned to pre-earthquake levels. Despite the weak

economy, the aid we provided to our long-term programs grew significantly. At the same time, our field part-

ners discovered new efficiencies and were able to do more with less, making it a very successful year.

In 2011, Plant With Purpose completed our triennial Impact Evaluations designed to measure the outcomes of

our activities. The results were very encouraging. The following are highlights from the Impact Evaluations:

· In Tanzania, where we have been working with savings groups the longest, 50% of member households now say they

have sufficient savings to meet household needs for 6 months, compared to only 6% of non-member households.

· In the Dominican Republic, participating farmers showed improvement in most indicators of wealth and are 4 times

more likely to make their living planting trees.

· In Haiti, families involved with Plant With Purpose actively saved cash 4 times more frequently than non-Plant With

Purpose households. They owned 30% more land and planted 3 times as many trees.

· In Mexico, Plant With Purpose families showed significant improvements to economic conditions compared to non-

target households, measured by factors such as: frequency of saving, incidence of concrete floors, cattle owner-

ship, amount of land worked, and diversity of income sources. They suffered from 50% less diarrheal illness and

also planted substantially more trees.

Reflecting on these accomplishments makes us grateful for what has been done, but also reminds us that

there is much work to do. As our program excellence grows, so does our desire to continue reaching out to

make a difference in many more lives.

With Gratitude,

Scott Sabin

· Plant With Purpose partnered with 523 members from 14 associations in nine communities. Plant With Purpose received requests to collaborate with three additional community groups, which will extend our work to new regions and prov-inces.

· Program participants built 151 fuel-efficient stoves. These stoves use less firewood and re-duce the amount of smoke released into the air.

· Nearly 500 farmers received training in sustain-

able agriculture and environmental protection techniques. They planted 23,500 trees.

· Six workshops were facilitated on Peace and Reconciliation and Creation Care for churches and communities. Plant With Purpose partnered directly with two churches to meet the physical and spiri-tual needs of their communities.

· Plant With Purpose partnered with 2,500 people in 51 villages in the Dominican Republic.

· 343,676 trees were planted in agroforestry and re-forestation efforts, restoring the land, preventing erosion, and improving families’ livelihoods.

· Plant With Purpose launched a savings-led micro-finance model. In our project along the Haitian/Do-minican border, 12 new savings groups were formed and trained as a part of this pilot. These groups have already accumulated $15,000 in savings.

· 503 lay leaders were trained and 144 new Bible study groups were established as a result of Plant With Purpose’s partnership with 51 rural churches. Over 300 groups meet regularly which foster com-munity, discipleship, and spiritual growth.

· The work on the Haitian/Dominican border continues to grow as farmers demonstrate strong camaraderie as together they over-come poverty and revive their communities.

Dominican rePublic Led by Carlos Disla Country Director, Floresta Incorporada

· Plant With Purpose extended its work to 74 villag-es with 2,603 members in three regions of Haiti.

· Community members protected 37 watersheds by planting over 191,471 trees and constructing over 457 miles of soil erosion barriers.

· Staff members were trained in the Village Sav-ings and Loan methodology and five groups were identified to pilot this new savings system. Addi-tionally, Plant With Purpose facilitated 347 finan-cial management trainings to equip community

members to improve their business skills.

· Plant With Purpose provided Bible study curriculum and training for pastors which greatly assisted local churches in their outreach and service to their communities.

· Community members constructed 50 ecologically friendly latrines, and received 100 drinking water systems. These measures protect the water table and provide families with access to safe, clean water.

Plant With Purpose partnered with over 260 communities in six countries. Collectively, Plant With Purpose’s partners have planted over 7,461,180 trees and empowered thousands of rural families to transform their lives. This year we accomplished the following:

· Over 900 families (4,840 people) in 58 commu-nities made great efforts to conserve their re-sources and improve their livelihoods in Oaxaca, Mexico.

· 41 cisterns were constructed to store 16,000 gal-lons of rainwater each; 28 family vegetable gar-dens were established to improve incomes and nutrition; 73,628 trees were planted across 163 acres to reforest degraded hillsides.

· 346 families received chickens that will provide a

continual source of eggs to eat for protein and sell in the mar-ketplace.

· 72 “Festivals of Values” events were facilitated to promote spiritual growth.

· 19 loans were granted through Village Savings and Loan groups, allowing members to start small businesses and generate income.

· The Church, Community, and Change project continued to empower the local church to be an agent of positive change in the community.

mexico Led by Luis Alberto Castellanos Country Director, Misión Integral Para el Desarrollo

· Plant With Purpose partnered with 1,883 farmers in 42 villages with dramatic results: families have produced nutritious food to eat and sell, children have been able to go to school, and communities have joined together to grow in their faith and transform their lives.

· Plant With Purpose teamed up with USAID to imple-ment a three-year program that will help farmers maxi-mize local markets to receive more money for their crops, improve their livelihoods, and foster long-term growth and prosperity.

· 312,041 seedlings were planted in deforested areas; 446 fuel-efficient stoves were built to save wood, produce less smoke, and improve family health.

· 2 new Village Community Banking (VICOBA) groups were established for a total of 66 groups. Together, these groups saved $86,128, which they lent out to members for improvements on their farms or investing in small businesses. In addition to promoting savings and loans, these groups create a setting for personal growth through group devotions and training opportunities.

tanzania Led by Richard Mhina Interim Director, Floresta Tanzania

· Plant With Purpose worked with 22 villages in North-ern Thailand. Farmers continued to make great strides in reducing poverty, healing environmental and social scars, and developing healthy, sustain-able economies.

· 337 hill tribe members were assisted in the process of receiving Thai citizenship.

· Farmers trained in agroforestry and sustainable hill-side farming techniques starting 26 new agroforestry plots that improved soil quality and crop yields while

providing families with nutritious food to eat and sell. Farmers plant-ed 29,487 trees in agroforestry and reforestation efforts.

· Plant With Purpose USA hosted a Holistic Ministry Sum-

mit for the six international program directors. During this eight-day summit, leaders worked to develop a unified but contextually appropriate strategy for Christian witness throughout the Plant With Purpose program. The directors cast a long-term vision for spiritual growth, renewal, and church partnership in the regions where we work.

· Plant With Purpose was invited to join Compassion Inter-national, World Relief, International Justice Mission, and other world-class nonprofits to form Live.58, an unprec-edented alliance working together to end extreme, global poverty by 2035. The core of this initiative is based on Isa-iah 58 with the goal to fast-forward the end of poverty.

· Plant With Purpose held its annual Planting Hope Gala at the Paradise Point Resort in San Diego and raised a record breaking $380,236 for its programs worldwide.

· Plant With Purpose launched a new savings-based credit system called Village Savings and Loan (VSL) in many of its international programs. This methodology is at the cut-ting edge of microfinance. VSL groups provide farmers who usually wouldn’t have access to financial services, the opportunity to save their money in a safe place, re-ceive loans to invest in businesses, and build a network of community and accountability.
