2011 Colorado MNM Mine Rescue Contest
TEAM BRIEFING STATEMENT Welcome to the 6th Biennial Colorado Metal and Nonmetal Mine Rescue Contest, we hope that you are enjoying your stay and now it is time for the field event…. The Goldrush Mine is a single level, multi-section, underground gold mine. Mining is accomplished using the room-and-pillar method. A typical production cycle includes drilling and blasting, followed by scaling and loading. The low grade gold ore is loaded with LHD’s to haul trucks which transport the gold ore to a surface crusher. There is one 10-hr production shift and one 8-hr maintenance shift per day, 5 days/week. The production shift starts at 7:00 AM, and the maintenance shift starts at 9:00 PM. This allows 4 hours between shifts for blasting gases to clear. The production shift crew numbers 7 miners and 1 foreman and the maintenance shift crew numbers 5 miners and 1 foreman. Last week mining was being conducted in the 3rd Left Section when on Thursday Jimmy the geologist, discovered some high grade gold veins near the proposed 2nd Right Section. Since then, all of the equipment is in the process of being moved to the 2nd Right Section. Today was scheduled to be the last day in the 3rd Left Section. One hour into today’s production shift, Sam Snead, the Mine Manager, went into the mine to the 3rd Left Section to speak with the foreman and to check on the progress of moving the equipment to the 2nd Right Section. As Sam turned into the 3rd Left Section he smelled smoke. Sam tried to contact the crew but failed. Sam made it outside where he called all local, state, and federal agencies. Several mine rescue teams have since responded and all sections and areas of the mine have been explored except for the 3rd Left Section. In this search they have not found any of the missing miners. The last mine rescue team in the mine did however, manage to set up a Fresh Air Base at the mouth of the 3rd Left Section. It is now 11:00 AM; approximately 3 hours since Sam Snead smelled the smoke and could not contact any of the day shift production crew. If your team is willing, we would like you to; bring any live miners to the fresh air base, account for the missing miners, extinguish or seal any fires, and to explore and map all accessible areas of the 3rd Left Section. A fresh backup mine rescue team is on site and is available if you have an emergency. All materials needed to work this problem are located at the 3rd Left Section and are identified with placards.
Good luck.

MINE INFORMATION SHEET
Mining & Equipment: Single level, multi-section, gold mine uses the conventional room and pillar method to extract low grade gold ore. The gold ore is loaded by LHD’s and is transported to the surface by haul trucks. The average mining height is 7 feet and mine entries are nominally 10 feet wide. All mobile mining and support equipment and miscellaneous utility vehicles are diesel powered.
Mine Category: The mine is classified as a Category IV mine, which applies to mines in which noncombustible ore is extracted and which liberate a concentration of methane that is not explosive nor capable of forming explosive mixtures with air based on the history of the mine or the geological area in which the mine is located. The concentration of methane in such mines is not explosive nor capable of forming explosive mixtures if mixed with air as illustrated by Table 1 above, entitled "Relation Between Quantitative Composition and Explosibility of Mixtures of Methane and Air".
Water: The mine has had water problems from time to time.
Electricity:
Underground electrical power is off, locked out, and guarded. It can be turned on if needed.
Ventilation:
The mine is ventilated using a 200-hp fan that is located on the surface. The fan pulls air through the main intake / haulage road. The fan is currently on and is being guarded and it is not reversible. This fan can be turned off. 480 volt, 50-hp auxiliary fans and flexible vent bag have been used to ventilate each section.
Ground/Rib and Roof Control:
Roof support is provided by 5-foot split-set bolts in a 5’ x 5’ pattern, and is occasionally supplemented by steel straps or mesh.
Communications There are mine pager phones located in the 1st Left Section underground warehouse and in the 2nd Left Section underground mine office.
2011 Colorado MNM Mine Rescue Contest
Mine Map:
The mine map was updated yesterday. There are no other known mines or oil/gas wells in the area.
Explosives:
Explosives are available and stored on the surface. No explosives are underground at this time.
Materials:
All materials needed to work this problem are located at or in the 3rd Left Section and are identified with placards.
