BIG SOUTH CONFERENCE Since its founding in 1983, the Big South Conference has matured into a competitive leader in college athletics, actively pursuing excellence on the field of play and in the classroom. The League’s growing presence as an NCAA Division I athletic conference is evident by athletic accomplishments on the national stage, innovative marketing and media partnerships, increased television packages, and quality athletic competition while intentionally fostering the academic, personal, social, athletic and leadership development of each student-athlete. This has evolved into the Conference’s mission of “Developing Leaders Through Athletics.” The Big South Conference was formed on August 21, 1983, when Charleston Southern (then Baptist College) Athletic Director Howard Bagwell and Augusta President George Christenberry began recruiting members into the Big South, receiving initial commitments from Augusta, Charleston Southern, Campbell, Coastal Carolina and Winthrop. One month later, Dr. Edward M. Singleton was selected as the League’s first Commissioner and continued to solicit new members. His efforts led to the additions of Armstrong State, Radford and UNC Asheville, giving the Big South more than the required six members to constitute an official conference. The Big South’s first year of competition was in the Fall of 1984, and in September 1986, the Big South Conference was granted full-fledged NCAA Division I status. During its infancy and prior to securing automatic bids to NCAA Championships, the Big South made early strides in earning at-large berths in several national postseason events, including volleyball, women’s basketball and women’s golf. In 1989, George F. “Buddy” Sasser replaced the retiring Dr. Singleton as Commissioner, and in 1990, the League received its first automatic bid – receiving an automatic qualifier to the NCAA Baseball Championship. Under Sasser’s seven years of leadership, the Conference implemented its public relations and compliance programs, and introduced its first-ever men’s basketball television package, featuring the Big South competing among some of the finest teams in the nation. In August 1996, Kyle B. Kallander replaced Sasser as the League’s third Commissioner, and in his 13 years at the helm of the Big South, Kallander has been instrumental in aggressively promoting the Conference to new levels. The Conference has enjoyed record levels in marketing revenue during the past several years, he has brought television coverage to Big South women’s basketball, baseball and softball for the first time in Conference history, as well as increased national television exposure to the League as a whole through aggressive and unique television packages. Under Kallander’s leadership, the Big South developed and initiated its first long-range strategic plan, re-affirming the League’s vision as a distinctive athletic Conference committed to the quality of institutional life through athletic competition. He also spearheaded the efforts to add football as a championship sport, which came to fruition in 2002, and has solidified Conference membership with the additions of High Point, Gardner-Webb and Presbyterian, and in 2011-12, the return of charter member Campbell University. Kallander’s long range vision has also included technological advancements, as the Conference introduced its first live event video streaming in 2005 and has since expanded its video offerings to more than 600 events annually through a partnership with the member institutions, as well as the creation of several online and social media platforms. In the last 15 years, the Big South Conference has experienced monumental growth and success in nearly every sport. During this time, the Conference has had two individual National Champions, more than 200 All-Americans, has reached the “Sweet 16” in men’s soccer, women’s basketball and baseball, has received national Top 25 rankings in men’s soccer, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, baseball, men’s outdoor track & field, and men’s golf, had an individual selected to play in the NCAA Singles Championship four times in addition to the first men’s tennis doubles at-large selection, had the No. 1 ranked men’s golfer in the country, has had the nation’s top scoring men’s basketball team three consecutive years as well as the national men’s basketball scoring leader twice, received an at-large playoff berth in the Football Championship Subdivision in 2006, and had an institution finish fifth in the NCAA Men’s Golf Championships – the Conference’s highest-ever team finish in an NCAA event. In 2006-07 alone, the Big South was the only Conference nationwide to have an at-large participant in the football playoffs (Coastal Carolina), a team in the Second Round of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament (Winthrop) and a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Baseball Regionals (Coastal Carolina). In fact, Coastal Carolina’s baseball program has been a No. 1 seed three out of the last five years, while its FCS playoff berth in 2006 came in just the fifth-year of the Big South’s football existence. The Conference’s tagline, “Developing Leaders Through Athletics” was unveiled in 2008-09 in conjunction with the Conference’s 25th Anniversary. The League also honored its heritage with the Top 25 “Best of the Best” moments in League history from 1983-2008, with Liberty University’s 10-year women’s basketball championship run from 1996-2007 being crowned the No. 1 moment in the Big South’s first 25 years. The Conference’s on-field accomplishments have been duplicated in the classroom. Annually, more than 40 percent of Conference student-athletes are named to the Big South’s Presidential Honor Roll for maintaining a cumulative 3.0 grade-point average, and the League has had more than 95 Academic All-Americans in its quarter-century of existence.

Gardner-Webb University (GWU), located on 250 acres in Boiling Springs, N.C., is a private, four-year, NCAA Division I institution affiliated with the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina. GWU has been recognized as one of only 134 institutions in America on the John Templeton Foundation’s Honor Roll for Character-Building Colleges.

GWU enrolls over 4,000 students from 33 states and 34 foreign countries in undergraduate, graduate and doctoral degree programs. Small classes in a personal learning environment allow the university to feature a 15-to-1 student-to-faculty ratio. With increased national exposure and attention given to the institution’s academic programs and character building opportunities, the enrollment has grown over 60 percent in the last 10 years.

There are 45 major fields of study on the undergraduate level. Graduate programs such as the School of Divinity, the Master of Business Administration (MBA) program, and the Graduate School are gaining regional acclaim for numbers of students served and quality of programs exhibited. Gardner-Webb’s GOAL Program (Greater Opportunities for Adult Learners) operates on 17 satellite campuses around North Carolina for working adults who are seeking to complete their four-year degrees at night. Recent expansion efforts also have created two new modern facilities for off-campus students - GWU at Statesville and GWU at Charlotte.

Perhaps there is no greater time to observe the academic quality of Gardner-Webb University than right now. All of the necessary factors for academic excellence – faculty, students, resources, curriculum – are working in conjunction with one another to gain widespread acclaim from alumni, friends, trustees, the media and the community. Over 130 full-time faculty members comprise a group of educators at GWU being heralded as the "premiere class of instructors ever assembled at the University." Over 80 percent of the faculty hold a Ph.D. or equivalent, and many boast well-documented activities in the business and professional worlds. With a student-to-faculty ratio of 15 to 1, Gardner-Webb is able to provide personal instruction to its students, who now number over 4,000, making Gardner-Webb the fifth-largest private institution in North Carolina. New technological features in our library enhance the learning experience for a higher quality student. The incoming freshman class this year averaged over 1020 on the SAT and a 3.5 GPA.

Dr. A. Frank Bonner, in his sixth year as the president of Gardner-Webb University, took office on May 2, 2005, and was inaugurated on April 6, 2006. Bonner is no stranger to Gardner-Webb, having been a part of the University family since 1987. A native of Greenville, S.C., Bonner graduated from Furman University in 1969, has a M.A. degree from the University of Georgia and earned a Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He was a faculty member and Associate Dean at Anderson College in Anderson, S.C., prior to beginning his career in Boiling Springs as Vice President for Academic Affairs. In 1992, Bonner was promoted to provost and senior vice president at Gardner-Webb, a post he held until assuming his current role in 2005. After a comprehensive, national search for the university’s new president, chairman of the presidential search committee and the board of trustees, Frank Beam, said, “We came to the conclusion that we had the most qualified candidate right here at the university.” Bonner succeeded Dr. Frank Campbell, who served Gardner-Webb University as president from October, 2002 until June, 2005. Active in civic life and in the community, Bonner has served on the boards of the United Way, the YMCA, and Communities in Schools, and he serves on the Cleveland County Sports Commission. He is a past chairman of the Cleveland County Chamber, a past president of the Shelby Rotary Club, and a Sunday School teacher and deacon at First Baptist Church in Shelby. Bonner is also a retired Colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve. During Bonner’s time as provost, Gardner-Webb emerged as a vibrant institution for higher learning, officially moving from college to university in 1993. The institution’s academic reputation has steadily improved during Bonner’s time in Boiling Springs, with an outstanding faculty and consistently evolving curriculum. Bonner is married to the former Florence “Flossie” Black of Chester, S.C., also a graduate of Furman University. They are parents of two adult daughters and five grandchildren.

Burch oversees all athletic operations at Gardner-Webb, including management and supervision of athletic programs, facilities and bud-gets. During his career at GWU, Burch has overseen across-the-board improvements in athletics facilities and the addition of five new sports since arriving in 1997. A sixth sport, men's swimming, was added in 2007-08. Burch is also responsible for continued improvements in the quality and quantity of Gardner-Webb’s athletics staff – with a number of full-time positions created to assist and enhance the entire department.

GWU athletics has seen a steady increase in academic perfor-mance since Burch's arrival, and the department has posted a com-bined GPA above 3.0 in each of the last three academic years.

The Bulldogs also finished third in the men's and women's combined sports standings – a very impressive effort in the race for the inaugural Bill Bibb Trophy.

Senior Woman Administrator Pam Scruggs is in her 31st year of service with Gardner-Webb University athletics, and remains one of the most vital components of the program’s success. Scruggs has served as Associate Athletics Director and SWA since 2000. Scurggs provides the athletics department with consistent and dependable performance in a number of crucial administrative areas. Her primary responsibilities include monitoring the athletics department budgets, monitoring the operation of the department’s women’s varsity programs, overseeing game-day operations and assisting in the administration of the University’s entire athletics program. Scruggs plays an invaluable role in the success of Bulldog athletics. Pam and her husband, John, have one daughter, Bonnie, who is a freshman at Gardner-Webb University.

The 2011 Gardner-Webb softball team will have a new look this season, as four-year players Melody Harrell, Mandy Ward, Alison Coffey and Christine Murray, as well as three-year players Christa Fullwood and Ashley Whitlock, have all graduated and moved on, leaving a youth movement for head coach Tom Cole and his staff this year. Coach Cole’s squad in 2011 is comprised of 12 underclassmen, including seven freshmen and two redshirt-freshmen that missed most of the season last year due to injuries, a redshirt-sophomore, four juniors, a redshirt-junior and one senior. Senior outfielder Kelsey Witter, along with redshirt-junior pitcher Cindy Boomhower, will be looked upon to provide both leadership and direction to a young team in 2011 that boasts a roster of 13 players that have played one season or less at the intercollegiate level. However, the Runnin’ Bulldogs roster is full of both talent and depth, as outside of both Witter and Boomhower, juniors McKenzie Morenus, Lindsea Hutchinson, Jane Savage and sophomore Jordyn Arrowood, all return having played in 44 games or more last season.

PITCHING With the graduation of Murray and Coffey, the pitching load in 2011 will fall on returners Boomhower, sophomore Jessica Milligan, redshirt-freshman Presley Wesson and newcomers Jessica Childers and Alyssa Gutierrez. “Our pitching staff is perhaps one of the deepest pitching staffs we have ever had,” stated Coach Cole. Boomhower, who missed most of 2009 due to back problems, bounced back in a big way for GWU last season, as the righty posted eight wins and a team-low ERA of 2.53 on the year. Boomhower, who made 33 appearances last season, including 20 starts, held her opponents to a team-low .257 batting average, while striking out 136 batters over 152.1 innings pitched. “Cindy returns after having a strong season in the circle last season,” stated Coach Cole. “We expect big things out of her this season and will look to her experience and leadership to help with our young team this year.” While Milligan saw limited time in the circle last season as a true freshman due to the depth of the GWU pitching staff, this season she will look to use the experience she gained from last year in working with the veterans. Last season, Milligan had two wins and struck out eight in 23.2 innings of work. “Jessica is a sophomore that we have high hopes for this season,” shared Coach Cole. “She gained a lot of experience last year as a freshman which will be very beneficial to her heading into this season.” Wesson, who missed most of last season due to a season-ending injury that required surgery, will look to have a strong season in the circle for GWU. Last year, before getting injured, Wesson made five appearances, picking up five strikeouts in 6.1 innings of action. “Presley is recovering very well and we are extremely optimistic about her this season,” continued Coach Cole. Freshman Childers and Gutierrez both had strong fall seasons and will see time in the circle for GWU this year. “Jessica Childers showed a lot in the fall and really impressed us,” stated Coach Cole. “While Alyssa has improved tremendously since stepping on campus in August. We are very excited about both Childers and Gutierrez.”

CATCHER Guiding the young pitching staff will be veteran catcher Morenus. The junior should see the bulk of the work for Coach Cole’s squad this season. Morenus is GWU’s top returning offensive threat, as she posted a .281 average, seven home runs, seven doubles, 27 RBIs and a .477 slugging percentage at the plate last season. “McKenzie has paid her dues over the last two years in splitting time with Mandy Ward,” stated Coach Cole. “It is her time and she should catch most of the innings. McKenzie is a two-time all-conference performer and we have high expectations for her as a leader. We expect her to be a key player for us both offensively and defensively this year.” Also seeing time behind the plate this season will be freshman Elizabeth Williams. “We expect Williams to see some time catching for us this season, as she is a very talented catcher, coming in behind a very talented and experienced catcher in McKenzie,” commented Coach Cole.

INFIELD With the loss of infielders Fullwood and Harrell, and the moving of Witter back to the outfield, look for a slew of new faces in the infield this season for the Runnin’ Bulldogs. First base is wide open, as three players in Lindsea Hutchinson, Michelle Primm and freshman Rebekah Reaves will compete for playing time. Hutchinson came on late offensively last season, posting a .231 batting average, four home runs, 16 RBIs and a .362 slugging percentage in 44 games. “Hutchinson, Primm and Reaves are all competing for time at first base,” stated Coach Cole. “All three are learning the position, but all three can hit.” With Witter moving back to her natural position in the outfield, sophomore Jordyn Arrowood will make the move from third base to second base this season. Last season as a true freshman, Arrowood had 32 hits, scored 21 runs and swiped 11 stolen bases offensively, while posting a .943 fielding percentage at third base where she played all 54 games for GWU. “Jordyn already has a lot of experience in the infield having played third base for us all season last year,” commented Coach Cole. “She has a very good glove and brings speed to our line up offensively.” Two other players could see time at second base this season in Primm and freshman Rachel Jablonski. “Michelle could see time at second base because of her stick offensively,” stated Coach Cole. “Michelle also worked hard over the summer on her speed and agility which we were very pleased with.”

“Rachel could see time all over the infield for us,” continued Coach Cole. “She had a very good fall season and we are very impressed with her defensive ability.” With the graduation of four-year starter Melody Harrell, the shortstop position will be taken over by redshirt-freshman Morgan Baker. Baker, who missed most of last season due to a back injury, is 100 percent and is ready to make an impact for GWU both offensively and defensively in 2011. “We have very high expectations for Morgan this season,” said Coach Cole. “She has very soft hands and a big stick.” With Arrowood making the transition to second base, freshman Samantha Meenaghan will see immediate playing time at the third base position. “Meenaghan has a very good glove and an incredible arm,” shared Cole. “She is long and has very good range at third, is a solid hitter offensively and is deceptively quick.” Depth at the third base spot will come from Brittney Morrow, Jablonski and Reaves. “Brittney returns for her second season having split time at third base and catcher last year as a freshman,” stated Coach Cole. “Brittney is a hard worker and will get to focus all her efforts on just playing third base this year.” “Reaves is a big hitter who has a strong arm and a solid glove,” stated Coach Cole. “She will contribute both offensively and defensively.”

OUTFIELD Perhaps the strongest area of the Runnin’ Bulldog team this season is in the outfield, as it is the deepest and most experienced group of players on the team for Coach Cole. Returning in the outfield is Witter, who is looking to finish her career at GWU with a strong season, Savage, Hutchinson and redshirt-sophomore Melinda Dulkowski. Witter, who is returning to her natural position in the outfield where she was an all-conference performer in 2009, hit .217 with 31 hits, four home runs, seven doubles, 13 RBIs and a .378 slugging percentage in 53 games last year playing second base as a junior. “Kelsey returns for her senior year and to her primary position of left field where she was an all-conference player in 2009,” said Coach Cole. Also returning is Savage, who had a strong sophomore season last year. Savage, who started in center field all 54 games last year for GWU, was third on the team with a .277 batting average, swiped eight bases and scored 27 runs on the year. “Jane is a very good contact hitter and has very good speed on the base paths,” stated Coach Cole. Dulkowski returns to the line up after missing last season with an injury. Two years ago as a true freshman, she played in 43 games, finished tied for fifth on the team with five doubles and was perfect in the stolen base department on the year. “Melinda has a great glove in the outfield and makes great breaks on the ball defensively,” continued Coach Cole. “She has very good speed. We expect her to be a solid contact hitter in our line up this season.” Hutchinson, who started in the outfield for GWU last season, could also see time in either left field or right field. “Last year Lindsea played all 44 games in the outfield,” stated Coach Cole. “Her arm is a definite attribute.” Freshman Emily Bowman will also see time in the outfield this season

for Gardner-Webb. “Emily had a very good fall and impressed us tremendously,” stated Coach Cole. “She is improving each and every practice defensively and will be a weapon for us offensively.”

SCHEDULE The Gardner-Webb 2011 schedule will as always be a very challenging slate, however, this season will prove to be even more so as 30 of its scheduled 43 regular season games will come on the road away from Varsity Field in Boiling Springs, N.C. After opening up the season with a double header at USC Upstate on February 16th, Gardner-Webb will open up its home slate with a non-conference double header versus Furman on Saturday, February 19th. The Runnin’ Bulldogs will then hit the road for its next 23 games, which includes games at the Seahawk Classic hosted by UNC Wilmington on February 25-27th, five games at the UF Tournament in Gainesville, Florida from March 4-6th, and then five games at the Winthrop Adidas Invitational in Rock Hill, S.C. from March 11-13th. Gardner-Webb will then remain on the road to take on the Charlotte 49ers in a double header on March 15th, when the Runnin’ Bulldogs will then travel to Greensboro, N.C. to take on the Lady Aggies of North Carolina A&T the very next day, March 16th. Coach Cole’s squad will then open its 2011 Big South schedule at Presbyterian College on March 24th, before returning home for the first time in over a month to step out of conference play and host South Carolina State in a double header on March 26th at Varsity Field. The double header with South Carolina State kicks off a 12-game home stand, which includes 10 Big South conference games. Radford, the defending Big South Champions, come to Boiling Springs, N.C. for a three-game series on April 2-3rd, while on April 5th, the Runnin’ Bulldogs will host the Blue Hose of Presbyterian College for a single tilt. Gardner-Webb will then host Winthrop for a double header on April 13th, before wrapping up its home schedule with a three-game conference series with Liberty on April 15-16th in Boiling Springs, N.C. The Runnin’ Bulldogs will wrap up its 2011 regular season slate with nine road games, all coming in the Palmetto State of South Carolina. GWU will play a single game at Winthrop on April 19th, before playing back-to-back three-game conference series at Charleston Southern on April 22-23 and at Coastal Carolina on April 30-May 1st. The 2011 Big South Softball Championship Tournament will be held this year from May 12-14th and will be hosted by Winthrop University in Rock Hill, S.C.

The winningest coach in Gardner-Webb softball history, head coach Tom Cole enters his 11th season at the helm for the Runnin’ Bulldogs. Cole came to Gardner-Webb in 2001 and produced immediate results, supervising GWU’s transition to NCAA Division I status and directing the Runnin’ Bulldogs to a school-record 36 wins in just his second year in Boiling Springs. Gardner-Webb finished the 2010 season in a three-way tie for third-place in the Big South Conference regular season standings, turning in an 8-10 conference record on the year. Overall the Runnin’ Bulldogs were 22-32 on the season, its first 20 win season since 2008, but were even more impressive at home where they posted an 11-6 record. For the second straight year, the Runnin’ Bulldogs softball team advanced to the Quarterfinals of the Big South Conference Championship Tournament, this time falling to the host and No. 6 seeded Coastal Carolina Chanticleers. The Runnin’ Bulldogs had four players receive postseason honors for the second straight year, as senior first-baseman Christa Fullwood and sophomore utility player McKenzie Morenus both earned spots on the All-Conference First-Team, while junior pitcher Cindy Boomhower and senior catcher Mandy Ward both were named to the Second-Team All-Conference. Coach Cole’s squad also placed 15 members on the 2010 Big South Presidential Honor Roll, a huge academic achievement for the Runnin’ Bulldogs softball program. Fullwood, who was named to the All-Conference Academic Team, also earned a spot on the NFCA Mid-Atlantic Region All-Second Team and the North Carolina All-State University First-Team by the North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association. Fullwood was also named as a Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award Finalist, a first in GWU’s history. The end of the 2010 season saw the rewriting of GWU’s Division I career record books, as departing seniors Christa Fullwood, Melody Harrell, Mandy Ward and Christine Murray all left their mark on the Gardner-Webb softball program. Fullwood finished her career at as GWU’s DI career leader in batting average (.380) and in fielding percentage (.992). Fullwood ranks second in career RBIs (107), second in doubles (31), third in homeruns (20), third in total bases (272), tied for third in extra base hits (56) and fifth in walks (61). Fellow teammate Melody Harrell wrapped up her career second in extra base hits (57), second in total bases (292), second in runs scored (105), tied for second in triples (9), third in hits (190), tied for third in doubles (30), fourth in at bats (666), fourth in RBIs (103), fourth in homeruns (18), fifth in batting average (.285) and fifth in stolen bases (37). Harrell is also the only Runnin’ Bulldog in GWU’s Division I history to have at least 100 RBIs and 100 runs scored in her career. Catcher Mandy Ward finished her four-year career at GWU as the Runnin’ Bulldogs DI leader in homeruns (26) and ranks third in RBIs (106), third in fielding percentage (.984), third in runners caught stealing (36), tied for third in extra base hits (56), tied for third in doubles (30), and fourth in total bases (265). Right-handed hurler Christine Murray, who shattered GWU season records as a junior, finished her career as the leader in strikeouts per 7 innings pitched (7.47) and second in strikeouts (471). Murray also ranks third in wins (31), third in complete games (33), third in innings pitched (441.2), third in shutouts (8), and fifth in ERA (3.46).

For the Gardner-Webb softball team, 2009 was a season of firsts - the Runnin’ Bulldogs first year competing as members of the Big South and the first ever appearance for Gardner-Webb in the Big South Softball Championship tournament. Despite a very young team, as the roster consisted of seven freshmen and only two seniors, Coach Cole did not allow the youth to perturb the Runnin’ Bulldogs, as GWU picked up 19 wins on the season. The Runnin’ Bulldogs entered its first ever Big South Softball Championship tournament in 2009 as the No. 5 seed, but turned some heads in the three-day event. Gardner- Webb went 2-2 in the tournament, defeating No. 4 Charleston Southern in the opening round and then eliminating No. 6 Coastal Carolina in the first elimination game of the championships. While at the tournament the Runnin’ Bulldogs made history, as in the 12-8 win over No. 6 Coastal Carolina, the two teams combined for 20 runs, the third most in Big South Softball Championship history. GWU had four players receive postseason honors, as junior first-baseman Christa Fullwood and sophomore utility player Kelsey Witter both earned spots on the All-Conference First-Team, while junior shortstop Melody Harrell and junior catcher Mandy Ward both were named to the Second-Team All- Conference. The four all-conference selections were the most ever for a GWU team in one year since the Bulldogs moved to the NCAA Division level in 2000-01. Fullwood along with Christine Murray were both named to the 2009 Big South Softball Championship All-Tournament Team as well. In 2009, Gardner-Webb’s Christa Fullwood also made waves nationally, as at the conclusion of the season, the junior was ranked seventh in the nation in batting average with her average of .460 on the year. Fullwood was also ranked 23rd in the country in on-base percentage at .519 and 48th nationally in slugging percentage at .719. Fullwood also was named to the All-Conference Academic Team and also earned a spot on the North Carolina All-State University First-Team by the North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association. The 2008 Gardner-Webb team was able to reach the A-Sun Tournament for the third consecutive season by earning the No. 6 seed. Cole and his squad went into the tournament and shocked No. 1 seed Lipscomb by a 3-2 score. The team competed just as hard in the classroom, finishing with the No. 2 grade point average (3.45) in the country among all NCAA Division I softball programs while 10 GWU players were named All-American Scholars. In 2007, Cole guided the program to a 10-7-1 record in the A-Sun and a 35-26-1 overall mark, recording its first-ever postseason win in Division I. The Runnin’ Bulldogs, with solid all-around team play, earned the No. 2 seed in the league and advanced to the conference championship for the first time in the program’s history. The team broke nearly every major offensive statistical category en route to a second-

place finish in the league during regular-season play. The 23.5 game improvement from the 2006 campaign marked the eighth-best turnaround in Division I history. Melody Harrell finished the season ninth in the NCAA with 1.09 RBIs per game after amassing 51 in just 47 games. Abbie Looper, after blasting one final triple in her career in the second round of the A-Sun Tournament, ended her season 14th nationally in triples per game (0.10). Off the field, Joanna Ward earned first-team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District III honors. Harrell garnered A-Sun All-Freshman team accolades. After the 2007 season, Cole took over the reigns of the Michigan Ice professional softball team for the final three series of the season. While with the Ice, he was able to coach his former student-athlete and former assistant coach, Lani Shaffer, who was playing her second season with the team. With only one senior on the squad and 11 underclassmen, Cole led his young 2006 team to a 12-38 record, finishing 7-13 in the Atlantic Sun despite having to deal with multiple injuries to the pitching staff. The seven wins were good enough for a spot in the conference tournament. Jessi Williams, who led the team in seven offensive categories, was named second-team all-conference and second-team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District III. In 2005, Cole saw his Runnin’ Bulldogs post a 19-33-1 mark while suffering through a plague of assorted injuries, which hampered the squad all season. Not all was lost however as Rachael Riopel was named Second Team All-Atlantic Sun and was tabbed by CoSIDA as an ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American Third Team. Riopel was also selected to the North Carolina All-State Team by the North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association. Cole guided Gardner-Webb to the nation’s 14th-best turnaround in 2004, as it posted a 30-32-1 record to improve 10.5 games from the previous season. The Runnin’ Bulldogs also went 11-9 in the Atlantic Sun Conference, good enough for a sixth-place finish and the program’s first-ever appearance in the A-Sun Championship. After leading the Runnin’ Bulldogs to a spot in the A-Sun Championship and just the third 30-win season in school history, Cole was voted as the A-Sun Coach of the Year by his league peers. Now with ten seasons under his belt in Boiling Springs, Cole owns a 227-313-3 record at Gardner-Webb, making him the only coach in school history with 200 career victories to his credit. Off the field, Cole’s teams have been extremely successful, as on three separate occasions, he has had the program rated in the top-20 academically by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association. In 2008 the team finished with the No. 2 grade point average (3.45) in the country among all NCAA Division I softball programs while 10 GWU players were named All-American Scholars. Following the tremendous 2007 campaign, Cole’s team had 10 student-athletes garner NFCA All-American Scholar Athlete awards. The team finished fourth nationally with a 3.493 GPA. In 2006, he had nine earn NFCA All-American Scholar Athlete status while the team placed seventh with a 3.43 GPA. After the 2005 season, five were named to the NFCA All-American Scholar Athlete roster. In 2003, the team was 20th in the NFCA with a 3.24 GPA. Eight of his student-athletes were named NFCA All-American Scholar Athlete.

All ten of Cole’s teams have recorded a GPA of at least 3.07 since his arrival at GWU. In 17 years as a collegiate head coach, Cole has put together a 353-481-3 career record. He picked up his 300th career victory with a 6-0 win over Presbyterian on March 18, 2008. Prior to coming to GWU, Cole was the head coach at NCAA Division III Elmhurst (Ill.) College. There, the Jamison, Pa., native inherited a program that had to forfeit the last two games of its previous season due to a lack of players. Cole wasted little time in turning around the struggling program and during his five seasons there, became the winningest coach in the history of the program. In 1997, Cole was named the CCIW Coach of the Year and the NFCA Division III Midwest Regional Co-Coach of the Year. Before his tenure as Elmhurst, Cole spent two years as an assistant at Kutztown (Pa.) University with the softball and women’s basketball teams. From 1988-92 he was the head softball coach, head women’s basketball coach and a physical education instructor at Broward Community College in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Cole also served a five-year stint as athletics director and head coach for softball, girl’s basketball, and volleyball at Orlando Christian (Fla.) High School. Cole earned a bachelor’s degree in recreation and parks administration from North Carolina State University in 1977. Cole then went on to get his master’s degree from Florida International University in 1989.

Diana Deal, a former standout softball player for Appalachian State University, enters her first season as a full-time assistant coach and her third year overall on head coach Tom Cole’s staff having served the last two years as a graduate assistant coach. Deal assists in everyday happenings of the GWU softball program including on the field coaching, recruiting, travel and field upkeep. Deal also assists head coach Tom Cole with the Runnin’ Bulldog hitting and offense. In 2010, the Runnin’ Bulldogs had four players hit over .270 on the season, as senior Christa Fullwood led the team with an average of .389 and was in the top-five in the Big South Conference in almost every offensive statistical category. Last season, in 2010, GWU knocked out 342 hits on the season, the fifth-most in GWU’s Division I single season history, and scored 196 runs on the year, the third-most in a single season for the Runnin’ Bulldogs since 2001. The Runnin’ Bulldogs also blasted 38 homeruns, the second most in a single season since GWU hit 52 as a team in 2007, while the team’s 96 extra base hits ranks third in the record books for a single season. Deal, formerly Diana Cook, came to Gardner-Webb after a stellar playing career at Appalachian State. While with the Mountaineers, Deal virtually re-wrote the school’s record book. For a single season, she ranks first in walks, games played and started while also being etched in the record book as second for runs batted in and third in both doubles and homeruns. On the defensive side, Deal was first in fielding attempts, putouts and double plays. For her career, she is first in fielding attempts, putouts, double plays turned and walks. Deal is second in at bats, runs scored, games played, games started and in homeruns. She also finished her career by notching third-place overall for career RBI’s and total bases. Deal also brings a wealth of coaching knowledge to an already strong staff. Deal was a camp counselor from the fall of 2003 through the spring of 2006 at Appalachian State youth softball clinics, instructing beginners to advanced students in softball skills and strategies. For three summers, she was a volunteer assistant coach for the Cabarrus County Challengers ASA softball team. Deal graduated with a bachelor of science degree in physical education K-12 in December 2007 from Appalachian State and received her master’s degree in sport science and pedagogy from Gardner-Webb in August 2010. Diana married Jeff Deal, a N.C. State Highway Patrolman, on August 14, 2010.

Former Gardner-Webb standout Stacie Reichert returned to Boiling Springs as an assistant coach on Tom Cole’s staff in August 2007 and is now in her fourth year with the team. In 2010, her third season as the GWU pitching coach, Reichert help guide Cindy Boomhower back from injury in 2009 to a place on the Big South All-Conference Second-Team. Boomhower posted a 2.53 ERA on the season and held her opponents to a .257 batting average while striking out a career-high 136 batters. Christine Murray collected a team-high 142 strikeouts in 2010, as the senior hurler tied with Boomhower with three shutouts on the season. Under Coach Reichert’s tutelage, Murray finished her career as the leader in strikeouts per 7 innings pitched (7.47) and second in strikeouts (471). In her second season with the Runnin’ Bulldogs in 2009, Reichert had a tough task of mending together a pitching staff that was devastated by injuries and untimely illnesses all season long. Despite the obstacles, she helped junior hurler Christine Murray to 11 wins and a place on the 2009 Big South Championship All-Tournament Team. In the regular season conference games only, Murray was first in the Big South in innings pitched (90.0), strikeouts (98), and games started with 13. On the overall season, Murray was first in the conference in strikeouts (193), third in the conference in opposing batting avg. (.250), third in innings pitched (181.1). Murray was twice named the New Balance Pitcher of the Week, coming on April 6 and April 23 and recorded a streak of 23 consecutive innings without issuing a walk. During her first season as an assistant coach, she helped her alma-mater to the fourth-best ERA in the school’s Division I history. Reichert also helped rookie Cindy Boomhower record the fewest walks per seven innings in GWU’s history, allowing just 0.91 walks per seven innings pitched. Reichert also directed the squad’s Christine Murray to first place in the record book for strikeouts per seven innings as she struck out 7.46 batters every seven innings pitched. Reichert, who topped multiple single-season and career categories for the Runnin’ Bulldogs during her playing days, returned to Gardner-Webb after coaching at Frostburg State from 2005-2007. Reichert etched her name in multiple categories throughout her career. Upon graduating, she was the single-season leader in wins, complete games, innings pitched, strikeouts, ERA and shutouts. She topped the school’s record book for career wins, saves, complete games, innings pitched, strikeouts, strikeouts per seven innings, ERA and shutouts. During her freshman season, she recorded a team-best 69 strikeouts while tallying a 2.36 ERA. Reichert led the team in wins her sophomore campaign while amassing an impressive 2.12 ERA in 28 appearances. She earned second-team all-conference honors her junior year and was named to the North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association all-state team. Reichert posted 18 wins and led the A-Sun with a school-record 213 strikeouts. She also tossed a career-best 1.71 ERA. Reichert finished her career in 2005 by posting 166 strikeouts in 183 innings with a 2.33 ERA. Reichert received her master’s from Frostburg State in May 2007 in human performance.

The Gardner-Webb Runnin’ Bulldogs finished the 2010 season with a 22-32 overall record and an 8-10 conference record, placing them in a three-way tie for third-place in the Big South regular season conference standings. Gardner-Webb posted a solid 11-6 home record on the year, yet struggled on the road going 6-17 in true road contests and 5-9 in neutral site games against what proved to be a very challenging schedule. The Runnin’ Bulldogs, which were a senior led team, had four players earn all-conference honors, as senior first-baseman Christa Fullwood and sophomore utility player McKenzie Morenus were both named to the All-Conference First-Team, while redshirt-sophomore pitcher Cindy Boomhower and senior catcher Mandy Ward both earned a spot on the All-Conference Second-Team. Fullwood, which was also named to the Big South All-Academic Team and was a finalist for the Lowes Senior CLASS Award, led the Runnin’ Bulldogs and was second in the Big South Conference in batting average (.389), RBIs (47), and on-base percentage (.473). Fullwood also led GWU with 61 hits, 38 runs scored, 11 doubles, 106 total bases, a slugging percentage of .675, 27 walks and was tied with fellow senior Mandy Ward for the team lead with 10 home runs on the year. Overall offensively, GWU had four players hit over .250 on the year, with Fullwood, Morenus and Ward providing the power and RBIs, while sophomore outfielder Jane Savage, who hit .277 on the year, provided the base runners and speed for the GWU offense. In the circle, GWU was led by Boomhower, who posted a team best 2.53 ERA over a team-high 152.1 innings pitched, and senior Christine Murray, who had a team-high 11 wins and 142 strikeouts. After starting off the year at 3-0 with two wins at S.C. State and a neutral site win over South Dakota State, the Runnin’ Bulldogs then loss four straight at the Seminole Classic hosted by Florida State. GWU bounced back with four straight wins at the Seahawk Classic in Wilmington, N.C. to move to 7-4 on the year, yet again hit a skid, dropping nine of its next 10 games to fall to 8-13 overall. Coach Cole’s squad then went 2-2 over its next four games to move to 10-15 overall heading into the conference slate. The Runnin’ Bulldogs picked up a conference opening win over Presbyterian College at home on March 27, only to suffer eight straight losses, four of which came in Big South play, before defeating Presbyterian College again this time in Clinton, S.C. to move to 2-4 in the Big South and 12-23 overall. After a three-game home sweep of Coastal Carolina, the Runnin’ Bulldogs dropped five straight conference road games before taking two of three at Charleston Southern to move to 7-10 in the Big South and 17-29 overall. GWU finished out the regular season with a 5-1 mark, dropping a 2-1 contest to East Tennessee State as the lone loss,

and finished the regular season at 21-30 overall and in a three-way tie for third-place overall in the Big South with an 8-10 conference record. Drawing the No. 4 seed in a tie-breaker for the 2010 Big South Softball Championship tournament, GWU defeated Charleston Southern 8-3 in the first round, yet dropped its next two games in the double-elimination tournament to fall to 22-32 overall. While the season did not go quite the way that the Runnin’ Bulldogs and head coach Tom Cole liked in terms of the wins and losses, the seniors finished their careers rewriting the GWU Division I record books, while a handful of underclassman made strong strides to showing the Big South Conference that the future looks bright for the Runnin’ Bulldogs softball program. Fullwood finished out her career at GWU in the top-five of a number of categories in GWU’s Division I career record book. Fullwood is tops all-time in GWU’s Division I history with a .380 career batting average and first in fielding percentage with a career mark of .992. Fullwood, who only played three years at GWU, also sits second in career RBIs with 107, second in doubles with 31, third in home runs with 20, third in total bases with 272, tied for third in extra base hits with 56 and fifth in walks with 61. Fellow senior Melody Harrell also finished her career in the top-five in GWU’s Division I history in a handful of categories, as Harrell sits in second-place in extra base hits with 57, second in total bases with 292, second in runs scored with 105 and tied for second in triples with nine. Harrell also finished her stellar four-year career at GWU, third in total hits with 190, tied for third in doubles with 30, fourth in home runs with 18, fourth in RBIs with 103, fourth in at bats with 666, fifth with a .285 career batting average and fifth in stolen bases with 37. In fact, Harrell is the only Runnin’ Bulldog in GWU’s Division I history to drive in over 100 career RBIs and score over 100 career runs. 2010 seniors Mandy Ward and Christine Murray also etched their names in the GWU Division I career record books, as Ward is the GWU DI career leader in home runs with 26. Ward is also third in RBIs with 106, tied for third in doubles with 30, tied for third in extra base hits with 56 and fourth in total bases with 265.
