GREENING VIRGINIA'S CAPITOL

The Greening Virginia's Capitol project is a pilot project that incorporates a variety of low-impact stormwater management techniques on an adjacent to the grounds of the VirginiaState Capitol in Richmond. Practices include permeable brick walkways, rain gardens,rainwater harvesting, and urban curbside bioretention planters. As a highly visible historicsite, all design features had to meet the Capitol Preservation Master Plan and the City ofRichmond Downtown Master Plan. This project is also a Sustainable Sites Initiative (SITES)Pilot Project.This presentation will review the various design and construction issues involved with thisproject, as well as some of the SITES-specific requirements and objectives.

Our instructor will be Christopher E Sonne, PE, LEED AP.

Chris Sonne is a professional civil engineer and LEED accredited professional. His 25 yearsof work experience have included a broad variety of projects, including water,wastewater, and solid waste facilities; environmental engineering and permitting; and sitedesign services. He formed Civil & Environmental Services in 2007 to provide low-impactand sustainable site consulting services, including design, review, inspection, training, andtechnical assistance. He is also the Board Chairman of the James River Green BuildingCouncil.

SPILLWAY PROTECTION WITHARTICULATED CONCRETE BLOCKS

Spillway Protection with Articulated Concrete Blocks

Mr. Rissmeyer has closely followed the changes in the state regulations for impoundingstructures or dams. He has been involved in numerous dam inspections, flood inundationstudies and rehabilitation design projects on dams. This includes the Royal LakeRehabilitation Project which received an ACEC merit award in 2010, and was also featuredin Erosion Control Magazine in June 2010. Mr. Rissmeyer will speak about the engineeringdesign of this type of project, which included the use of Articulated Concrete Block (ACB)matting to prevent erosion of the existing grass spillway. The discussion will include theengineering design, supporting hydraulic engineering calculations, and lessons learned

during both design and construction.

Our presenter will be Donald J. Rissmeyer, P.E.

Don Rissmeyer is Associate-in-Charge for the Richmond Office of A. Morton Thomas andAssociates. He has 20 years of consulting experience on a wide variety of projects, mostlyfor public sector clients. He is an alumnus of the University of Virginia and holdsprofessional engineering licenses in Virginia, North Carolina and Maryland at this time.

Mr. Rissmeyer is also active professionally with ASCE, where he currently serves as theVirginia Sections Chairman for the Stormwater Technical Committee. He is also a pastpresident of ASCEs Richmond Branch and Virginia Section, and is currently the Presidentof the Virginia Floodplain Managers Association.
