Troy Polamalu and SMU Head Coach June JonesSpeaks to BGCAS Summer Academy

Offering Special Remarks at the Opening Ceremony

launching the 2011 BGCAS/GUAS Summer Academy, Governor

Togiola Tulafono reminded the youth participants about how

fortunate they are to have such a unique opportunity to walk

the halls of an institution of higher education so early in their

academic journey. I commend the American Samoa

Community College for hosting this program and allowing

young, elementary level students from across American

Samoa to be exposed to higher education. This is an excellent

approach to creating the pathway to postsecondary education

and increasing college readiness. Governor Togiola Tulafono shared his commitment

to providing a Youth Center for the youth; a safe place with structured and

adult-supervised activities where students can learn and grow in a positive manner.

Programs such as the Boys & Girls Clubs of American Samoa (BGCAS) and the GEAR

UP give you opportunity and hope for the future. They work with you to make sure you

have all the tools, skills and knowledge you need to succeed in school and have a bright

future. In closing, Governor Togiola thanked the BGCAS Board of Directors, ASCC

President, Board of Higher Education, GEAR UP and all the partners from public

agencies and community organizations who worked to make the Summer Academy a

    reality.

Be humble. Be great. And be a good ambassador for American Samoa, no

matter where you go, advised Troy Polamalu of the Pittsburgh Steelers. During his

remarks Mr. Polamalu urged the young audience to always remember where you come

from and to never forget that you represent your country and your culture. Troy

Polamalu encouraged all the students to pursue their education to the fullest and to aim

their goals up high. Troy was grateful to visit American Samoa and to give a little of what

he has learned as a professional athlete to the young students of the territory.

    Issue 1, JuneSeptember 2011

During the June Jones Goodwill Missions 3rd annual visit to Am. Samoa Coach

Joness keynote speech to BGCAS/GUAS youth participants emphasized four important rules

that were taught to him as a young child: 1) Always tell the truth, 2) Never steal, 3) Do not

cheat and 4) Choose good friends. He stressed that he has lived by these rules and teaches

them to all his student athletes. Applying these rules in your life will help you build good

character. Good character, powered by the desire to succeed in school, will help you

achieve anything in life; including playing in the NFL says Coach June Jones. June Jones

was a former Quarterback for the Atlanta Falcons and was nationally named Coach of the

year 1999 and three time Regional Coach of the year while at the University of Hawaii.
