Executive Summary
The Tampa Bay Partnerships Foreign Direct Investment Study was conducted to provide aggregated and individual data on key
international operations in the Tampa Bay market as well as identiy and increase uture investment opportunities or international
business in the Tampa Bay region. The study identied 480 companies rom 41 nations, operating across the entire spectrum o
industry. These 480 companies operate rom 1,821 separate locations within the region, employing over 41,500 workers. The top
investor nations and industry sectors are:

O the 1,821 locations, employment gures were ound through Hoovers. Data rom these sources showed that 87 percent o the
companies had less than 50 employees. Broken down urther, 60 percent o the companies had less than 10 employees. At the
opposite end, 5 percent o companies had more than 100 employees.
The FDI Study surveyed oreign-owned companies on a variety o inormation points, rom employment levels to location selection
actors. The 50 respondents revealed the ollowing trends:
Companies were asked where they sell their products and/or services, o which 50 companies responded. Nearly hal, or
46 percent, o oreign-owned companies in the Tampa Bay region export a portion o their goods or services outside o the
U.S. Only 28 percent o companies are selling solely within the state o Florida or Tampa Bay region.
When asked about parts and materials procurement, 57 percent o the 46 respondents indicated that they source parts andmaterials solely within the state o Florida or Tampa Bay region. Only 13 percent o the survey respondents indicated they
solely source via imports.
Based on location actors rom 50 respondents, the most common reason given or locating in Tampa Bay was merger/
acquisition cited by 46 percent o respondents. This was ollowed by central location (30 percent), and market/customer
base (12 percent).
O the 50 respondents, several cited the ollowing as advantages o being located in the Tampa Bay region: low costs o
business, quality workorce, climate, and inrastructure such as our regional ports and airports.
O the 50 respondents, several cited the ollowing as disadvantages o being located in the Tampa Bay region: lower local
incomes (presumable or consumption purposes), lack o transportation options both locally (mass transit) and globally
(international fights).
The Foreign Direct Investment Study was conducted or the eight counties which make up the Tampa Bay region. Below is the
breakdown by county o the 1,821 locations operated by the 480 oreign-owned companies:

MethodologyThe Tampa Bay Partnerships Foreign Direct Investment Study identied oreign business investment in the Tampa Bay region as o
the second quarter o 2011. This is an update o the 2009 Foreign Direct Investment Study. The study was administered by phone to
companies in Citrus, Hernando, Hillsborough, Manatee, Pasco, Pinellas, Polk and Sarasota counties. The original list was compiled
rom inormation provided by:

The Tampa Bay Partnership Foreign Direct Investment Study was designed to validate each companys presence within the Tampa
Bay region, as well as its oreign ownership. In addition, the study contained qualitative and quantitative elements intended toprovide a better picture o who Tampa Bays oreign companies are, what they do and why they do it in Tampa Bay. The result is a
listing o 480 companies rom around the region representing 41 dierent nations and a wide swath o industries. The comparative
statistics rom the 2009 study are 394 companies and 34 countries.
The Tampa Bay Partnership Foreign Direct Investment Study report is divided into ve sections: the Company Analysis; Country
Analysis; Industry Analysis; Survey Results; and Company Directory. Data within the Company Analysis section analyzes the ndings
or all o the companies contacted and provides a general breakdown o demographic and psychographic data or the eight county
area. The Country and Industry analysis sections provide a more in-depth look at the data or the countries and sectors that have
the largest oreign investments. Industries are dened by utilizing the NAICS 2007, North American Industry Classication System.
The Survey Results are the compilation o data collected rom surveying the 480 companies, o which 50 provided responses. The
Company Directory lists all o the conrmed oreign owned companies and includes their county location, nation o origin, industry,
and employment. The employment numbers or individual companies are provided in ranges to ensure condentiality.
Additional inormation on the Foreign Direct Investment Study can be obtained through the Tampa Bay Partnership. The Tampa Bay
Partnership is the regional organization that works with its partners to market the region nationally and internationally, to conduct
regional research and to coordinate eorts to infuence business and government issues that impact economic growth and development.
