They included auto repair, boxing, photography, filmmaking, woodshop, band, and even a football team (the Midtown Bears). In time, funding came for a girls’ program. Sometimes the best things have the humblest beginnings.MEF began back in 1965

with no money and no staff,

but a great idea. It was to

help at-risk youth not only

escape the problems of the

inner city but to flourish, in

school and in life.

It began with the boys. Programs were modest but appealing. They included auto repair, boxing, photography, filmmaking,

woodshop, band, and even a football team (the Midtown Bears). In time, funding came for a girls’ program.

Like any adolescent, the organization had growing pains. The Metro Achievement Center for girls, for example, had to relocate a

total of nine times in ten years because of space and leasing problems. And no one has forgotten the year 2008, which brought

severe economic challenges for everyone.

In 2015, MEF will have reached the age of

fifty—mature, but still richly developing and

more than vigorous. We warmly thank those

whose names appear on the following pages.

They have helped MEF reach this milestone

and deserve to join in the celebration.

Our Mission

Midtown Educational Foundation, through its Midtown Center for boys and Metro Achievement Center for girls, helps close the achievement gap for Chicago’s urban youth ages eight through eighteen.

How do we accomplish this? MEF integrates academics, virtues, and exposure to the world of opportunity beyond the classroom for each child it serves. Midtown and Metro programs engage parents and adult mentors in developing students of strong character with a desire for academic excellence, a college education, and service to others.

MEF derives its inspiration from the social teachings of the Catholic Church and the Prelature of Opus Dei (Work of God). Students and volunteers of all religious backgrounds are welcome.

Financial Highlights for the Fiscal Year Ended May 31, 2013

A Summary of MEF Programs:Walgreens One-on-One Program (4th to 6th grade)Volunteers serve as tutors and mentors for students one-on-one, encouraging good study and personal habits and also serving as role models.

Midtown/Metro Achievement Program (7th & 8th grade)Courses in math, English and science prepare students to enter college preparatory high schools and ultimately, college. Students acquire the habits and attitudes of achievers. Character development is strongly emphasized throughout.

College Orientation Program(9th to 12th grade)Students explore college options and prepare for college entrance exams. They also participate in field trips, academic “clubs” and service projects, among other enriching activities.

The Parenting ProgramThis program helps equip parents to meet the challenge of raising kids in the inner city. It offers seminars, conferences, informal support groups and much more, to assist parents in their job as the primary educators of their own children.
