Our Leadership

2013 has been a year of reflection and evolution. 160 years is no small feat for any organization and we owe our sustained impact to the forward thinking of our founder. Thanks to student volunteers from Temple University who meticulously cataloged our basement archives earlier this year, I had the opportunity to read a copy of the original by laws. I was truly amazed at how closely we follow the same charge today, as laid out by Elizabeth Hutter in 1853. From serving orphaned children of Civil War casualties to offering hope to young mothers forced onto the streets, Northern has continuously fought for the right of all Philadelphians to grow up safely and happily.

Today, Northern Children’s Services’ continued commitment to provide assistance to children at risk, nearly 3,000 children and families each year, is a testament to how far we have come. To honor this remarkable feat, and celebrate our rich history, we established the Elizabeth Hutter Society. The Elizabeth Hutter Society is an exclusive group of women, working together to provide support for the Generations Programs. The Generations Programs serve teenage mothers, either aging out of foster care or formerly homeless, each with at least one very young child, who live in the Buck, Weinberg and Merrick Residences on our Ridge Avenue campus. Community members now have opportunities throughout the year to meet, network and strategize how to use their influence, affluence and combined resources to support the residential facilities and the Generations Programs that service these young women.

Further celebrating our commitment and growth, we pushed ahead on the Merrick Hall renovations, set to complete in 2014. Thanks to our lead corporate partners Wawa, Inc. and IKEA together with the Jon Bon Jovi Soul Foundation and the generosity of many others, we were able to renovate the oldest building on campus, offer new housing opportunities for our young mothers and reaffirm our community legacy as the heart of Ridge Avenue.

Like our efforts for Merrick, our ability to build strong relationships with corporate partners throughout the years is key to our sustainability and it is why we chose to honor Beneficial Bank and its President & CEO, Gerard P. Cuddy, recipient of the Partnerships for the Children Award in September, 2012. Gerry leads Beneficial by adhering to their 160 year traditions and values, emphasizing the importance of strong community relations as foundational to a stronger Philadelphia.

Our honoring of Beneficial is more than an award, but also a signal to all of our current and future partners, that Northern values the importance of intentional corporate, civic, social and grassroots collaboration and is open to working with anyone committed to the same beliefs.

On behalf of all of us at Northern Children’s Services, we thank you and look forward to what our collective futures will hold.

Northern Children’s Services supports the healthy development of children, while stabilizing their families to build stronger communities .

Our Mission

Page 7: Northern Children's Services FY13 Annual Report

Everything we do at Northern Children’s Services is designed to ensure a more promising future for children and is driven by our belief that every child possesses inherent value, potential, and the ability to transform him or herself—regardless of his or her background or life circumstances. If we invest in that potential through child welfare and behavioral health services that emphasize safety, health, permanency, self-sufficiency and positive relationships, then the children will lead happier, healthier, and more productive lives and contribute to society in meaningful ways.

We help children and their families do better today, so that we all do better tomorrow .

Our Theory of Change

Historian Kerry Bryan, realistically depicting Elizabeth Hutter, at our inaugural Women for Women Elizabeth Hutter High Tea.

Page 9: Northern Children's Services FY13 Annual Report

In 1853, Elizabeth E. Hutter founded The Northern Home for Friendless Children, a residential facility that would care for children whose parents were unable to provide for them. Today, over 160 years later, Northern Children’s Services honors this remarkable woman by establishing The Elizabeth Hutter Society, an exclusive group of women, working together to provide support for the Generations Programs. Generations serves teenage mothers, who have aged out of foster care or were homeless, together with their very young children. Members of the Elizabeth Hutter Society will have opportunities throughout the year to meet, network and strategize how best to use their influence, affluence and combined resources to support the residential facilities and the Generations Programs that serve these young families.
