Welcome to Portland, Oregon! Thanks for being here for the Barbershop Harmony Society’s 74th In-ternational Convention! 2012 marks 10 years since

our last convention in Portland, OR, and if you were here then, you’ll remember what a fantastic week THAT was. The Society even won the Portland Oregon Visitors Association’s “Twin Spires” award for the convention “that had the greatest impact on the city of Portland in 2002.” Let’s do our best to once again show our beautiful host city why barbershoppers are the greatest people around.

Conventions are time for people to come together and celebrate what they do on a regular basis, but on a much larger scale. I’d like to be so bold in saying that we barbershoppers take that to the next level…and beyond! We gather each year for many reasons…to catch up with old friends, make new friends, tag into the wee small hours, compete with our chorus or quartet on the “big stage,” share the joy of barbershop singing with the younger generations of singers, take in a show or two (or three or four), visit beautiful cities...the list goes on and on. What ties us all together, however, is the opportunity to combine our voices in song to celebrate and share the gift of barbershop harmony with others. That is why we are here this week!

Putting on a convention of this size takes a lot of hard work. I’d be remiss if I didn’t acknowledge those people who made this year’s con-vention possible. So please be sure to thank our Convention Chair-man, Bob Cox, when you see him, for all he’s done with his team of hundreds of volunteers who have worked hard (and will continue to work hard) to prepare for this event. Also thank Dusty Schleier, the Society’s Manager of Meetings and Conventions, for his tireless ef-forts in running the Society’s conventions. Both Bob and Dusty, along with their teams, ensure this convention runs as smoothly as possible so you can just enjoy the ride.

Good luck to all of the competitors this week. And if you are watch-ing the contest from your seat, be sure to cheer loudly. Each man has worked hard to put his best performance on the stage to entertain you. Let’s all show them how much we appreciate them.

Enjoy your week, and remember to register now for Orlando in Janu-ary and Toronto in July…the two conventions taking place during our 75th Anniversary year in 2013. They will both be a party you’ll never forget!

The highlight for many of us each year and the culmination (or is it the start?) of each year is our In-ternational Convention. This year we welcome you all to the end of the Oregon Trail. We started this journey last year in Kansas City at the start of the Trail. As al-ways, the chorus and quartet con-

tests will be barn burners between groups performing at a very high level of expertise. The shows will pro-vide diversity and a chance to sit back and just enjoy our wonderful hobby. And Portland is a beautiful city with lots of things to do and lots of places to go. Mt. St.Helen’sisashortdistance.ThePacificCoastandthe Columbia River gorge offer breath-taking views ofamagnificentpartofourcountryandourcontinent.The city’s parks and the rose garden are unsurpassed in their beauty.

It is a wonderful opportunity to visit with old friends and make new ones. Take time between sessions to share a meal and a song with someone new. Take time to catch up with each other on news since the last time you met. You have the choice or running yourself raggedforfourfunfilleddaysorjustsavoringallthebest the Barbershop can offer.

Whatever you do, enjoy the week, make plans to attend the 2013 Midwinter Convention in Orlando and the 2013 International Convention in Toronto, and refresh yourself for another six months or year until we meet again!

BarberTots RoomThe BarbersTots Room is available to parents with small children during all contest sessions. Parents must remain with their children at all times. The BarberTots Room for ALL contests is located in the Preferred Din-ing Room (Club Level) of the Rose Garden Arena.

Elevator CourtesyHotel elevators can sometimes stall for lengthy periods due to overload-ing. When you are part of a large crowd of people, all trying to get to differentfloorsofahotel,thewaitforanelevatorcanbetime-consum-ing and frustrating. Waiting patiently for an available car, however, can help prevent elevator failures that delay you and your fellow passengers. Remember, consideration for others is one of the hallmarks of being a Barbershopper.

MusicJudges in this category adjudicate the musical elements in the performance: melody, harmony, range, and tessitura; tempo and rhythm and meter; construction and form; and embellishments. They judge the extent to which the musi-cal performance displays the hallmarks of the barbershop style, and the degree to which the musical performance demonstrates an artistic sensitivity to the music’s primary theme.

PresentationThese judges evaluate how effectively a performer brings the song to life. They respond to both the visual and vocal aspects of the presentation, and evaluate the interaction of these aspects in creating the image of the song, as well as everything about the performance that contributes to emo-tional impact upon the audience.

SingingJudges in this category evaluate the degree to which the performer achieves artistic singing in the barbershop style: the production of vibrant, rich, resonant, technically accu-rate, and highly skilled sound, created both by the indi-vidual singer’s use of good vocal techniques, and by the ensemble’s process of tuning, balancing, unity of sound and precision. They listen for a sense of precise intonation, a feeling of fullness or expansion of sound, a perception of a high degree of vocal skill, a high level of unity and con-sistency throughout the performance, and a freedom from apparent effort that allows the full communication of the lyric and song.

Each judge may award up to100 points per song.

The Barbershop Harmony Society Hall of Fame was established by action of the Society Board of Directors as a means of bestowing Society recognition and honor to members and quartets -- living or dead -- for exceptional contributions made that have enhanced the life blood of the barbershop experience for the Society. Honorees are recommended to theSocietyBoardbyafive-mancommittee,eachcommitteemanservingafiveyearterm;termsarestaggeredsothat each year the current Society president selects the chairman and the replacement for the retiring member.

The Bluegrass Student Union The Blue Grass Student Union, organized from within the Louisville Chapter in 1973, was crowned International Quartet Champions in 1978. In their early years as young men whose aver-

age age was eighteen, they were privileged to receive valuable training from their director, Jim Miller, and inspiration from International Champions such as the Suntones, the Buffalo Bills and their Louisville heroes, the Citations. They have remained favorites of older barbershoppers, but have become, through the legacy of their many recordings, an inspiration and idolized hero to the mul-titudes of young barbershoppers who have joined our Society in the last several years. With their innovative style, expertly crafted musical delivery and more than twenty-five years of an extremely active performance schedule, The Blue Grass Student Union will always be held in the highest regards in our hearts and our memories. We proudly welcome Alan Hatton, Ken Hatton, Dan Burgess and Rick Staab into the Barbershop Harmony Hall Of Fame.

any current Hall of Fame committee member, is eligible for nomi-nation. Quartet nominations are considered to be for the quartet as an entity and not as individuals. Honorees are selected by a majority vote of the committee, and there is no maximum or minimum limit on the number of inductees in a given year.

The award criteria used by the committee fall into general cate-gories of music and administration/leadership. In music, judging, arranging, composing, chorus directing, coaching and singing are important.Inadministration/leadership,serviceasanofficer,advi-sor, and in planning, writing or editing are considered.

Jay GiallombardoJay Giallombardo has achieved excellence as musician, arranger, composer, director, educator, coach, and judge. At age 15, he joined the North Shore Chapter in the Chicago area and immediately showed proficiency in arranging and tag singing,

starting a barbershop club in his high school. In 1968 he helped form the quartet Grandma’s Boys, which sang together for seventeen years and won the gold medal in 1979. Jay went on to achieve high recognition as a coach, working with quartets and choruses at all levels, including championship groups in both BHS and SAI. He served as a faculty member at Harmony College and became the first District Music Educator for the ILL Dis-trict, later serving the district as VP of Chorus Director Development. In 1981 he turned his attention to direct-ing, forming the New Tradition Chorus. Buoyed by Jay’s musical leadership the chorus rose quickly and won an unprece dented 19 consecutive medals starting in 1988, including one gold. For many years Jay has directed the annual show of the AIC Chorus, the showcase of many of his epic compositions and arrangements, including “Anthems/Ode,” “A Tribute To World Peace,” and “All Nations Rise.” In 1993 Jay was certified in the Music Category which, along with the entire barbershop com-munity, has been profoundly influenced by his wisdom and insight into the barbershop style. We are proud to honor Jay by inducting him into the Hall of Fame.

Lou LaurelAdministrator, quartet man, coach, judge, Society president, record-setting chorus director and 50-year barber-shopper whose accomplishments and personable leadership made him a legend in two BHS districts: Louis (Lou) Laurel.

Lou was the first man to direct two different choruses to gold medals: the El Paso, Texas, Border Chorders in 1964 and the Phoenix Saguaro Chapter Phoenicians in 1972 – then again in 1976 and 1983. In twelve

Rudy HartRudy Hart (1914-2005) was a fine com-poser, arranger, pianist, vocal coach, cho-rus director and teacher. During WWII he served in the army and was stationed near Liverpool, England. There he often entertained the troops by playing the

piano and leading sing-alongs. In June of 1956, Rudy directed The Ambassadors of Harmony Chorus of Michigan City, Indiana to an in-ternational championship. He also founded and directed The Hartsmen, a 20-voice all-male a cappella chorus that traveled throughout the United States and Canada and performed in England during a two-week tour. It was Hart who, in 1961, conceived and initiated the first Harmony Education Program. This was begun as a single, one-weekend school per year. That program grew and has become today’s annual Harmony University where hundreds of barbershoppers, both men and women, hone their skills and learn barbershop craft. Joe Schmitt of the famous 1951 international cham-pion quartet, The Schmitt Brothers, described Rudy Hart, who became their coach and arranger, as “the man whose friendship most influenced the quartet and gave their singing the ‘soul’ that gave their voices warmth.” Rudy had a gift for making music come alive and inspiring performers to give their very best.

Dr. Drayton Justus Dr. Drayton Justus embraced the four-part harmony “way of life” over 50 years ago, and has continually excelled musi-cally and administratively. To date, he is only the second man to have both won quartet gold (Gentlemen’s Agreement,

1971) and served as Society President (2006). During his presidency, Nashville, Tennessee was selected as the new permanent site of Society headquarters. His quar-tet entertained our troops in Vietnam and sang for the United Nations General Assembly.

Drayton has won quartet championships in four dis-tricts and as lead singer. Throughout the 1980s, he sang lead with the 1961 champions, the Suntones. He has held numerous Society/district/chapter offices, chaired committees, taught classes, coached, directed, MC’d and arranged. He received both chapter and district BOTY awards and is a member of Dixie District’s Hall of Fame.

A retired university official, Dr. Justus holds degrees in music, human resource management and education. He and his “Sweet Adeline” Sue Ann reside near their children in northern Georgia.

Lou Laurel, Cont’dcompetitions in the Southwestern and Far Western dis-tricts, those two choruses won twelve championships, and they all medaled in international competition. Lou’s quartet, the Desertaires, twice placed in the top 10 at international. He is a Hall of Fame member in both the SWD and FWD. He was founder and first chairman of the Far Western District Chorus Directors Guild. Long before his directing days, Lou was a Voice Expression judge, a member of the Board of Re-view and received the pretigious Judge Emeritus Award. He served as SWD President, International Board Member, and was elected president in 1962. Lou died in 1997. In its final tribute, the Phoenix Chapter wrote, “He taught us how to sing, how to entertain, and how to make music. More importantly, though, he taught us how to laugh, and how to love.”
