SEASON’S GREETINGS Happy, happy Christmas, that can win us back to delusions of our child-

hood days, recall to the old man pleasures of his youth, and transport the

traveler back to his own fireside and quiet home!

- Charles Dickens

The Holidays are a great time for reflection, providing an opportunity of thinking about the things we value most – such as time with family and friends, education, and the caring people we work with on a regular basis in Perry. We have much to be thankful for in Perry Local Schools - motivated and eager students; dedicated and inspiring staff in our schools; and, caring, involved families, just to name a few. During this holiday season our efforts and thoughts often turn towards giving. The season affords all of us a great opportunity to think about our blessings and realize the true meaning of the season. Even in the midst of all of the holiday performances and events, our students and staff continue to find time to think of others and reach out to those less fortunate, with a wide variety of community projects. Thank you for your pas-sion, compassion, persistence and generosity in making this happen. It is especially fun to see our younger students growing increasingly excited as Christmas morning and the holiday break grows closer. There is also a sense of relief that a vacation is fast approaching, as we are all ready for the opportunity to enjoy the celebrations of the season with our families and friends. On behalf of the Perry Local Board of Education and administration, we extend our wish that the joy, peace and contentment of the season be yours. However you are spending this holiday season, we wish you good health, the pleasure of spending special time with those special people in your lives, and a New Year filled with hope and optimism. With gratitude and holiday cheer! John V. Richard, Superintendent Jim Casey, School Board President

SENIOR MOMENTS

Dear seniors, it is that Holly and Mistletoe time of the year; DECEMBER is a time of the year for exchanging expressions of Holiday cheer. Turquoise is your birthstone and the Nar-cissus is your flower. Special Days include: December 7th is Pearl Harbor; December 22nd is the first day of winter; December 25th is Christmas Day and December 31st is the official end of WW11. Christmas is a JOYOUS season for one and all. Indeed we are blessed by the thoughtfulness of others. This is a time when our families gather together and renew the ties of home. A holiday letter is a wonderful way to find out what’s new with friends and family members who are far away. DID YOU KNOW? WHIPPLE ELEMENTARY (perrylocal.org/whipple)

4800 12th Street N.W. Canton, Ohio 44708 (330) 478-6177 WHIPPLE STUDENTS HONOR SOLDIERS To honor the men and women serving in the United States Armed Services, Mrs. Ousley’s 4th Grade class took part in a very special service and learning project. Her class decided to “adopt” the local Army National Guard Aviation Unit Co. B 3-238th GSAB and to write a personal letter to every member of the troop thanking them for all they are doing for our country on their tour of duty in Af-ghanistan. The students wanted to make sure that everyone in the troop received their own personal letter, so they spent many hours writ-ing over 130 letters in order to ensure each soldier had a hand-written letter from “home”! The students also wanted to send the soldiers a special treat to enjoy while they were in Afghanistan, so they decided to collect can-dy to send it to them. They collected enough candy to fill three large boxes which they then sent overseas for the soldiers to enjoy. To expand their knowledge even more, the students also read stories about September 11th and helped create a “ Wall of Heroes” that features medals that they hand-made to represent the various first re-sponders and members of the military that live right here in our Perry community. The pictures they brought in of family members and the medals they created are proudly displayed in the school hallway for all to see. The Whip-ple Heights fourth grade students are all very proud of their project. They were honored to touch the lives of our soldiers and residents that are currently dedicating their lives to serving both our country and community!

Students at Lohr Elementary are Mad Scientists! Stu-dents are exploring imaginative learning each Tuesday when school is out. The six one-hour after school sci-ence programs are themed around a particular area of science and include such topics as rocketry, magnets, polymers and even the science of toys. The program encourages and promotes inquiry based thinking through a six week schedule that supports the national and state science curriculum. Students perform hands on activities and participate in several discussions that arise as a result of their various creations each week. Lohr students are seeing just how cool science can be.

PEP RALLY! We've got spirit yes we do! We've got spirit how about you? Students at Lohr were visited by our huge "Perry Panther" on a warm sunny afternoon in September. As a behavior incen-tive, students were rewarded with an outdoor Pep Ral-ly to cheer on their very favorite team... the Perry Pan-thers!! We cheered very loudly, we learned our Perry fight song, met our Homecoming Queen, Megan Bro-

phy, and even had time for some dancing.

COSTUME DAY AT LOHR Books came to life as students dressed as and reported on their favorite story book characters during Lohr Elementary's Harvest a Good Book - Character Dress Up Day. First grader, Xavier Vazquez went with a clas-sic, Peter from Peter Pan. Hobbes from Bill Watterson's famous cartoon "Calvin and Hobbes" was portrayed by fourth grader, Riley Brown. "Wowie! Wow! Wow!" Grace Weisenstein dressed as her favor-ite character, Junie B. Jones from the series of the same name. We even got to meet Soul Surfer's, Bethany Hamilton, characterized by our own Abby Logan. The classrooms were full of princesses telling about how all of their stories have happy end-ings. Several students paid tribute to our men and women in uniform and shared information about wars of the past or amazing state of the art military equipment. Even our teachers and parents joined in on the fun! Character Dress Up Day helped us make reading come to life at Lohr!

During the 2002- 2003 school year, Ab-by Middaugh, Maria Phillips and Brianna Andriotti were in Mrs. Lash’s second grade class at Knapp. Now, ten years later, all three girls are back at Knapp as Teacher Academy students. Maria is in Mrs. Laura Keller’s kindergarten class while Brianna is in the fourth grade with Mrs. Amber Hicks. Abby is right back in second grade with Mrs. Cindy Lash. All three girls are do-ing a fabulous job working with the Knapp students. They enjoy coming back to the place where their love of learning began. What a difference 10 years makes!

PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION Campaign, candidates, ballot, Republicans, Democrats…just a few of the words studied by the first through fourth grad-ers as they learned about the 2012 election. STUDENTS VISIT VETER-

ANS MEMORIAL On Tuesday, November 6th the second graders at Genoa Ele-mentary did their annual walk to the Veteran’s Memorial at Perry High School. This year was very special because while we were there, one of our students, Destiny Smith, was surprised by her father Sgt. Da-

vid Bissett who has been currently stationed in Japan. Sgt. Bissett spent some time talking with the students about his time in the mili-tary and how the military has helped us. Our students then went around and did rubbings of some of the names and writings found on

the memorial.

NEW READING LOFT Genoa recently had Tim Blythe donate and build a reading loft for Mr. Campbell’s classroom. The val-ue of the loft is over $2,000! Terry Hosner from Hosners Carpet donated a $300 piece of carpet as well. Genoa is one of the lowest socio-economic schools in our district and the fact that these two men donated their time and money to help promote early reading skills speaks vol-umes about their dedica-tion to our community and our schools.

EXCELLENT NINE WEEKS

Students and staff at Pfeiffer Intermediate have com-pleted an excellent first nine weeks and are well on their way for an excellent first semester. Teachers have been diligently preparing lessons and students have stepped up to the challenge that has awaited them. Recently, students participated in activities related to Red Ribbon Week which is designed to give students an awareness of the problems with drug and alcohol

abuse. Pfeiffer students from Girl Scout Troop 35 helped plan and implement various activities to help students make positive choices. At the end of the week, many students voluntarily signed a drug free pledge which was displayed in the cafeteria. The motto was "We Pledge to be Drug Free!" As we head into our holiday season, we are excited about our choir and band performances that are planned. The 6th grade choir concert will be held on December 6th at 5:45 and 7:15. The Pfeiffer choir has grown to over 200 students! The name of their concert in entitled "Jingle Bell Jukebox 2...the Flip Side" and is sure to entertain and delight the audi-ence. The band show will be held on December 18th at 7:00 pm. The band has also enjoyed continued success as its membership has increased. Band stu-dents have been able to meet everyday and have shown tremendous progress in their abilities from the beginning of the year. In and out of the classroom the

students and staff at Pfeiffer have been hard at work to make this school year one of the best yet!

THE INCREDIBLE HUMAN MACHINE On Wednesday, November 7th, the students and staff at Watson Elementary enjoyed a day long assembly entitled, “The Incredible Human Machine.” The as-sembly was organized by Watson UNITE; and helped to expand the students understanding of how the hu-man body functions. After a forty-five minute general assembly, grade level classes took turns participating in hands-on sessions where the students were able to explore the digestive, nervous, and circulatory systems. Students also learned the importance of eating nutritious food and the posi-tive effects of exercise on your health. Thank you to all the volunteers who took time out of their day to help the students in each hands-on station. We also want to thank our Watson UNITE group for the tremendous support they provided in helping or-ganize this outstanding event.

On Wednesday, Nov. 7th, Edison Middle school held an assembly for 7th and 8th grade students focusing on the damaging effects of Cyber Bull-ing, as well as, the legal aspects attached to this destructive behavior. Mr. Jacob Morgan, Family Court Intake officer, spoke to the students about the dangers of Cyber bulling, inappropriate texting and sexting. The assembly was very effective and informative for students and staff members. An opportunity for questions was provided at the end of the assembly. On Thursday, Nov. 8th, Edison Middle school hosted a parent workshop for all parents in the Per-ry Local School district to become better informed about how to protect and manage their children in the Cyber world. Judge Rosemarie Hall and Mr. Jacob Morgan facilitated this informative session that included topics such as: password protection, parental controls for technology and the potential legal ramifications for parents and minors. A heart felt thank you to Judge Hall and Mr. Morgan for donating their valuable time and efforts for our community. Handouts and pamphlets were pro-vided that evening. If any parent would like this information please feel free to stop by Edison Mid-dle school and pick up the literature.

STAFF PERFORMS THRILLER

Teachers at Edison Middle School went all out for TEEN READ WEEK dancing and scaring stu-dents – all to pro-mote reading! The theme was DARE TO READ for the fun of it! Each day throughout the week, we had scary story activities. On Thursday, all we told students: Fri-day is scary surprise day. Be here if you DARE! The teachers dressed up as zombies, but that was-n’t the scariest surprise for the day. What the stu-dents didn’t know was the teachers had been prac-ticing a THRILLER dance all week after school with a dance teacher. At the end of the day on Fri-day, students were called down for a special sur-prise assembly. When the curtains opened, they were shocked as their zombie teachers performed THRILLER! We have the best staff on the planet!

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY AT PHS

Do you enjoy working with teens? Perry High School Healthcare Occupations & Technology program in the Career Tech Department prepares students of junior standing to function as nursing assistants in nursing homes, hospitals and home care settings. The course-work focuses on 25 personal care skills needed to care for the needs of individuals across the life span, espe-cially the elderly. For example, students must weigh the person on a doctor’s scale, learn to take vital signs and assist with transfer needs. Would you like to help students master these skills by volunteering to spend time in the classroom and allow them to practice with you? Classes meet from 8:30-10:30 a.m. and volun-teers would be needed from November through May. Please call Mrs. McCaffrey @ 330.704.5241 for more details.

MANY THANKS! On November 2nd and 3rd, Perry Local Schools hosted their annual Speech and Debate Tournament, which kicks off the Forensics season. Perry Schools and the Speech and Debate Booster Club graciously hosted over a thousand students, coaches, and judges. Our hospitality was made possible through the generous donations of several area businesses. Please return the favor by supporting these patrons in exchange for their generosity. The following businesses donated: Canton Centre Walmart Subway, Massillon Lincolnway Wen-dys, Shearer’s Chips, and Strasburg Meats. The Perry team continued to make our community proud with not only their behavior and attitude, but also with a first place finish at the tournament. Best of luck for a great season, Perry Speech and Debate Team!

When Perry Theatre Director, “Louie” Mattachione announced that this years Broadway Musical would be the Tony Award Winning MAME…an air of excitement seemed to come over theatre-goers not only in Perry, but throughout all of Stark County. The reason for the excitement is simple. The show itself is a real winner. Add the “special touches” that the 51 year “tradition steeped” Perry Players seem to mold into their shows and the excitement is understandable. MAME is sure to be another “spectacular hit” that audiences will not want to miss. Plan ahead...don’t be closed out of THIS show! The show will be a “return engagement” for Perry as it was first presented by the Perry Players in 1975. The show, at that time, was met with an avalanche of enthusiasm and great reviews. Everyone fell in love with the show. The show was definitely a hit. All performances were sold out. MAME was a fairly new show at the time...having opened on Broadway in1966 at the Winter Garden Theatre on Broadway. It played for 1508 performances before touring across the United States and around the world. The show won 3 Tony Awards as well as the Outer Critics Circle Award for the BEST MUSICAL OF 1966. The storyline...the characters...and the music of the show all blend together to make MAME the hilarious winner that it is. The Character of Mame is best described as being “a happy happening”. She is well-to-do, lives in New York City and is suddenly surprised by a "wonderful present"…...her 10 year old orphaned neph-ew named Patrick. Young Patrick needs his aunt…..and this is something new for Mame. It changes her life. With familiar songs…wild choreography….and a definite twist in circumstances …..this is one Broadway Musical that offers a million laughs and still seems to “tug at the heart strings”. The show is as hilarious and heart-warming today as it was in 1975. MAME is certain to become one of your all-time favorite Perry Broadway Musicals. You will leave the theatre with a great big smile on your face as you head for home humming the strains of the beautiful and familiar music. The show is a WINNER! Mark your calendars. MAME Show dates are set for March 20, 21, 22, 23, 24 in the PHS MATTA-CHIONE THEATRE. All seats are reserved @ $9.00. Ticket Order Forms will be mailed out in early Feb-ruary to all Perry Theatre Mailing List Patrons. If your name is NOT on the Perry Theatre Mailing List and you would like to be included...simply send a request to: “Louie” Mattachione - Perry Theatre 3737 13th St SW - Massillon, Ohio 44646 and we will gladly add your name to our theatre mailing list. Your MAME Ticket Order Form will be mailed to you in mid-February. Don’t miss MAME!

FUND FACTS FROM THE TREASURER

MAJOR STATE EDUCATIONAL SPENDING CUTS FORCE DISTRICT INTO DEFICIT SPENDING

The table below summarizes the District’s fiscal year 2012 general operating fund financial activity along with the previous years information for comparative purposes.

▪ As of June 30, 2012, the cash balance of the school district was $22,123,092, decreasing $2,098,625 over the previous year’s cash balance.

▪ Revenues decreased $2,200,766; the significant decrease can be attributed to dramatic cuts made by the State’s and less federal stimulus funding.

▪ Total Expenditures decreased $2,088,769 from fiscal year 2011.

While the District has made significant cuts, the District’s spending during fiscal year 2012 still exceeded revenues by $2,098,625. Due to significant State cuts; State revenues collected during fiscal year 2012 were less than 2009 state funding levels. The Board and administrative team are monitoring expenditures and try-ing to resolve the deficit spending situation. Without additional revenues, the spending deficit will be very difficult to eliminate without making major changes to programs offered.

School lunches now include more fruits, vegetables (including vegetables from the five vegetable food groups: red/orange, dark green, leg-umes (beans), starchy and other vegetables), and whole grain-rich foods; only fat-free or low-fat milk; “right-size” meals with por-

tions designed for a child’s age; and less saturated fat, trans fat and sodium. These new changes are a result of the new school meal standards established by the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010—the first major changes to school meals in more than a decade. The changes are based on the latest nutrition science and the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans. When students eat healthy foods, they perform better in school. Children can learn good habits for life by making healthy food choices and getting proper exercise now. Here at Perry we are encouraging children to make the healthy choice by offering a variety of fruits and vegetables, both fresh and cooked, offering new foods, and planning meals that are both nutritious and delicious. We would like to challenge parents and grandparents to also reinforce healthy eating by offering similar foods at home. Improving the health and nutrition of children by providing nutritious meals in school is a top priority for Per-ry Local Schools. Together we can teach our children healthy habits that last forever.
