2012 EUREKA COLLEGE SPRING SPORTS MEDIA GUIDE
Stacey Sparks will enter her fourth season as head coach of
the Eureka College softball program in 2012. The former NCAA
Division III softball standout has used effective recruiting and
groundbreaking statistical performances from her student-athletes
to make the Red Devils a regular contender in the St. Louis
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference softball landscape.
The Red Devils have enjoyed success in terms of wins and losses
as well as offensive numbers under Sparks’s watch. The 2011 Red
Devils belted 12 home runs in only 28 games to break the single-
season team record for the second consecutive spring. Eureka
has also been effective in the pitching circle for Sparks, as the Red
Devils set a new single-season mark for strikeouts with 142.
The crown jewel of Sparks’s tenure so far has been the 2010
campaign. Eureka’s nine conference victories were its highest total
during its four-year membership of the SLIAC and the most league
wins in any season since the Red Devils won 11 Northern Illinois-
Iowa Conference (NIIC) games and qualifi ed for the NCAA Division
III Tournament in 2002. The Red Devils continued their success
against conference opponents at the SLIAC Tournament, routing
Greenville 13-5 in an elimination game on May 6 to become the
third Eureka squad (men’s basketball, 2007, 2010) to win a SLIAC
postseason contest since the Red Devils joined the nine-team
league prior to the 2006-07 academic year.
Sparks has proved to be an excellent recruiter during her tenure at
Eureka. She has successfully welcomed 22 new student-athletes
to the program since the summer of 2010, two of which have
earned All-SLIAC honors.
The Lincoln, Ill. native also enjoyed a wildly successful collegiate
softball career at Division III Millikin in Decatur, Ill. After
transferring from Illinois Central, Sparks compiled a school-record
.467 batting average (56-for-120) en route to being named the
College Conference of Illinois Wisconsin (CCIW) South Division
Player of the Year and leading the Big Blue to the CCIW title as a
junior in 1990. She also smashed 10 home runs, a Millikin record
that still stands and the most by any Division III player that season,
and was named to the Division III All-America First Team.
She hit .407 and set another single-season school record with
14 doubles to earn All-America Second Team accolades as a
senior. Sparks was the fi rst player in Millikin softball history to hit
.400 or better in back-to-back seasons. Sparks, who also played
basketball at Millikin, earned a communications degree from MU
in 1992 and was inducted into the Millikin athletics Hall of Fame in
2007.
STACEY SPARKSHEAD COACHMILLIKIN ‘92FOURTH SEASON
In addition to her own collegiate playing success and coaching
duties at Eureka, Sparks has continued to be very active in
athletics. She has coached basketball at West Lincoln Junior High
School and was an assistant coach for Lincoln Land Community
College. She has coached various YWCA and summer youth
basketball and softball teams and spent two years coaching youth
softball in Bloomington-Normal. When she is not coaching, Sparks
is a commercial underwriter for Country Insurance.

SARA EGGLESTONASSISTANT COACHCULVER-STOCKTON ‘08SECOND SEASON
Former NAIA pitching standout Sara Eggleston will enter her
second season on the Eureka softball coaching staff. Eggleston
will work primarily with the Eureka pitching staff.
A four-year pitcher at Culver-Stockton in Canton, Mo., Eggleston
was a three-time All-Heart of America Athletic Conference (HAAC)
choice for the Wildcats, including a First Team selection as a junior
in 2007. Eggleston led the Wildcats that season with 16 victories,
183.2 innings pitched, 126 strikeouts and a 1.94 earned run
average, while opposing batters hit just .230 against her.
The Memphis, Mo. native compiled a 40-31 career record in 92
total appearances, including 72 starts. She struck out 322 batters
in 496.2 innings pitched and concluded her four-year career in
2008 with a 2.75 earned run average. The Wildcats won 98 games
in Eggleston’s four seasons.
Additionally, Eggleston is in her second year as Eureka’s fi rst full-
time assistant athletic trainer. She earned a B.S. in athletic training
from Culver-Stockton in May 2008.
She later served as a graduate assistant athletic trainer with the
softball and spirit teams at the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar
Falls, Iowa, earning a master of science degree in athletic training
in July 2010.
BRITTANY GARDNERASSISTANT COACHEUREKA ‘09THIRD SEASON
A member of the Eureka College softball team in 2007 and 2008
and one of the most accomplished players in Eureka women’s
basketball history, Brittany Gardner will enter her third season on
the Eureka softball coaching staff in 2011.
Gardner’s fi rst season as an assistant coach on the Eureka staff
produced ground-breaking results, including the Red Devils’ fi rst
St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament berth
since joining the league prior to the 2007 season. Eureka also
smashed what was then a school-record 11 home runs in 2010
and improved its single-season totals in batting average, runs
scored, slugging percentage,
on-base percentage and
fi elding percentage. The Red
Devils went on to break the
team home run record again in
2011 with 12 homers.
During her two-year softball
career, Gardner started all
61 games for the Red Devils,
collecting 23 hits, 19 runs, nine
runs batted in and four stolen
bases.
On the basketball court,
Gardner left Eureka as the
program’s all-time leader with
149 3-point baskets. She
also holds the single-game school record, burying eight treys at
Principia on Jan. 23, 2007. Gardner ranks eighth all-time on the
all-time Eureka scoring list with 1,075 points and 10th on the all-
time assist list with 206. Gardner was a Second Team All-SLIAC
choice in 2008.
A native of Mooresville, Ind., Gardner earned a degree in fi tness
leadership from Eureka College in 2009.

2012 EUREKA COLLEGE SPRING SPORTS MEDIA GUIDE32
The Eureka College softball team will enter its fourth season under
head coach Stacey Sparks and look to return to the St. Louis
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament in 2012. Eureka
returns eight letterwinners, including a pair of all-conference
outfi elders, in its quest to earn its second postseason appearance
since 2010.
The Red Devils will turn to one of the most experienced players
in program history for leadership in the infi eld, as Carissa Alig
will make the move from shortstop to third base. Alig, who also
excels in the classroom as a two-time academic All-American, has
started 94 consecutive games since fi rst donning a Eureka uniform
in 2008. She is the active Eureka leader in nearly every offensive
category and already ranks ninth in Eureka history with 30 bases
on balls.
Another Eureka senior will play a huge role in the heart of the
Eureka lineup. Sara Hamilton is back in the EC outfi eld after an
outstanding debut season that resulted in an All-SLIAC First Team
selection. Hamilton smashed fi ve home runs in 2011 to promptly
race to fi fth place on the all-time Eureka home run list. She also
put up a .488 batting average and drove in 22 runs in one of the
most productive offensive seasons in program history.
Heather Flanigan rounds out Eureka’s three-player senior class.
A defensive specialist in the outfi eld a year ago, the dual-sport
student-athlete (soccer) will likely play a larger role in 2012.
Veteran starting pitcher junior Sarah Jesse returns for her third
collegiate season in 2012. Her 13 career victories already rank
tied for 10th in program history, and she is poised to crack the
top-10 in strikeouts and innings pitched before her collegiate
career is done. The Red Devils will turn to Jesse as their clear ace
throughout the 2012 season.
Outfi elder Caty Eeten headlines a group of three returning
sophomore starters. The switch-hitter, who also stars on the
Eureka women’s basketball team as the 2012 SLIAC Player of the
Year, hit .314 out of the leadoff spot for the Red Devils last season
and will continue to be a threat from that spot this season. Eeten
also pitched 38.2 innings last season for the Red Devils and will
Senior infi elder Carissa Alig (left) enters her fi nal collegiate season after starting 94 consecutive games since her debut
in 2008. Junior pitcher Sarah Jesse (right) enters her third collegiate season in 2012 as the active Eureka leader in every
pitching category.
continue to provide depth in the circle in 2012.
Emily Campbell, one of nine multi-sport student-athletes
(volleyball) on the roster, returns as Eureka’s catcher after making
26 starts as a freshman last spring. Campbell, who joined Alig
as academic All-Americans in 2011, will give the Red Devils a
dependable bat in the lineup and a consistent glove behind the
plate.
Manteno, Ill. native Amanda Murphy returns for the Red Devils at
fi rst base after a debut season in 2011 in which Murphy compiled
a .264 batting average. Murphy, one of only two players on the
roster to throw left-handed, is expected to continue her stay at fi rst
base this spring.
Sophomore Jackie Nauracy rounds out Eureka’s eight-player
group of returning letterwinners. The Schererville, Ind. native
added women’s soccer to her student-athlete resume in 2011 and
will provide depth in the Eureka outfi eld for the second consecutive
season.
A large collection of newcomers will bolster Eureka’s attack in
2012, as nine new student-athletes will join the program.
The most accomplished newcomer for the Red Devils is former
Illinois Central slugger Kelli Dunne, who will play second base in
2012. Dunne led NJCAA Division II in RBI as a sophomore last
season, compiling 98 runs batted in for the powerhouse Cougars.
Dunne, a junior, is the only three-sport student-athlete on the
Eureka softball roster after also participating in volleyball and
basketball in her fi rst season on campus.
Jaylynn Stewart also joins the Eureka softball program after
transferring to Eureka College at semester break. She played a
large role on the Eureka women’s basketball team that qualifi ed
for the SLIAC Tournament in 2012 and will anchor the shortstop
position for the Red Devils this spring.

Eureka returns six starters and eight letterwinners, including All-SLIAC choices
Sara Hamilton and Caty Eeten, for 2012. The Red Devils will also welcome nine
newcomers this season.
After missing her freshman season with various injuries, sophomore Ashley Segerstrom
will immediately improve the Eureka outfi eld as she beings her collegiate softball career
in 2012. Segerstrom joins Hamilton, Eeten, Stewart and Dunne as players who also
participate in women’s basketball.
Five players will have freshman eligibility for the Red Devils in 2012, another large
recruiting class for Sparks. Sarah Ackermann will give Sparks a versatile option after a
decorated prep career at Affton High School in St. Louis. Courtney Crone, another utility
player, also joined the program.
Tanisa Geiman, Karson Gragert, and Taylor Newby round out the freshman class for
2012. Gragert, who also plays volleyball at Eureka, was a two-time Female Athlete of
the Year at Georgetown-Ridge Farm High School and will immediately improve Eureka’s
pitching rotation this spring. She is also expected to contribute as an outfi elder.
Eureka will open the season in style, playing eight games during spring break as part of
the National Collegiate Sports Invitational in North Myrtle Beach, S.C. The Red Devils will
play two games each day beginning Monday, March 12 through Thursday, March 15.
Upon returning to the Midwest, Eureka will open its 16-game St. Louis Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference schedule at home on Saturday, March 24 against Westminster.
The Red Devils will also host Webster in the month of March on the 31st as part of the
program’s “Pitch for Pink” breast cancer awareness event. The Red Devils will also play
a non-conference doubleheader at North Park (March 21) and host Monmouth (March 25)
and Knox (March 28) in the month of March.
Eureka will make SLIAC doubleheader trips to Greenville (April 4), Fontbonne (April 6),
Blackburn (April 18) and Spalding (April 21) during the second half of the season. The
Red Devils will host league foes MacMurray (April 11) and Principia (April 14). The April
schedule also includes non-conference showdowns against Beloit (April 1), Rust (April 15)
Robert Morris-Springfi eld (April 25) and Franklin (April 28).
The top four teams in the fi nal SLIAC regular season standings, excluding NCAA Division
III provisional member Spalding, will qualify for the double-elimination SLIAC Tournament
in early May. The winner of that tournament will earn the SLIAC’s automatic berth to the
NCAA Division III Tournament.
