Perhaps the most rapidly improving athletics facility Eureka College has to offer, the Eureka

College softball team will play its home games at the same on-campus facility that once

served as home for Eureka’s only NCAA Tournament team in school history.

The Eureka softball facility has a two-story press box that allows for game operations, media

and equipment storage. The facility includes two spacious covered concrete dugouts, a new

gravel warning track and a state-of-the-art windscreen along the outfi eld fence.

“Eureka, of course, is a Greek word that

means I have found it and it described

perfectly the sense of discovery I felt the

day I arrived here in the fall of 1928. Eureka

was everything I had dreamed it would be

and more.”

-- Ronald Reagan ‘32

40th President of the United States

THIS IS EUREKA COLLEGEEureka College is a family. A small family.

Our historic campus, located on 112

wooded acres in the heart of Central Illinois,

can best be described as charming and

friendly. Our focus on a comprehensive

liberal arts education, with major emphasis

on leadership and service to others, is

one-of-a-kind. Our proximity to Peoria,

Bloomington-Normal, Chicago, St. Louis,

and Indianapolis make us ideal for those

looking for major market facilities, yet like

to return to a safe, secure, and small town

environment.

THE FOUNDING OF EUREKA COLLEGEEureka College was founded by abolitionists

from Kentucky who were members of a

religious movement known as the Christian

Church (Disciples of Christ) and were

committed to providing young people a

liberal education. These pioneers believed

in an education infused with values as

a basis for leadership. Chartered by the

Illinois Legislature in 1855, Eureka was

the fi rst college in the state and third in

the nation to admit men and women on

an equal basis. To the present day, the

college has continued to be interested in the

development of character as well as intellect

and technical competence with emphasis on

service and leadership.

Eureka College has had a major impact on

American life, with alumni who have had

successful careers in education, business,

management, the arts, and community

service. Graduates include forty-two

college presidents, seven governors and

members of Congress, a Nobel Laureate

team member, and former President Ronald

Reagan, Class of 1932.

HOW SMALL IS SMALL?Eureka College has just under 800 students.

Is this a disadvantage? On the contrary

-- we view it as an amazing advantage.

David Everett’s (1769–1813) line, “...large

streams from little fountains fl ow, tall oaks

from little acorns grow “ rings true at Eureka.

Each of those lucky enough to become a

part of Eureka College and our traditions

fi nd themselves supported, encouraged,

and treated, not as a number...but as the

extraordinary and creative individuals they

are.

In this unique and empowering environment

some of the best and brightest have

discovered their strong sense of self, their

vocation for their future, and a deep love

for this special small campus. Imagine -

from this small campus has come forty-two

college presidents, seven governors and

members of Congress, a Nobel Laureate

team member, and the 40th President

of the United States. EC has over 5,000

living graduates located around the world.

You’ll fi nd many of them serving the current

Eureka’s historic campus has 112 acres with 24 buildings. The College offers more than 30 majors and programs of study.

President of the United States, serving as

doctors, lawyers, teachers, and heads of

non-profi t organizations around the globe.

AROUND CAMPUSAs a student at Eureka College, getting

involved is a tremendous opportunity

that will have lasting impacts on your life;

short term and long. With the turning of a

new academic school year, the amount of

organizations and activities are plentiful. No

matter if you are a new fi rst year, transfer

student, commuter, or upperclassman,

taking advantage of what we have to

offer will be to your benefi t. The college

experience is about growing the holistic

student in all areas including outside the

classroom. By giving of your time and

talents to an organization, the organization

can thrive and your college experience will

be even more valuable.

The Student Activities Offi ce at Eureka

College strives to promote co-curricular

involvement in the areas of organizations

and activities using various resources on

and off campus including the Cerf College

Center; center of campus community life.

We encourage personal development

socially, interpersonally, and morally

through student engagement. Providing

programming, campus activities, and

resources we strive to cultivate holistic

student growth and development and in turn

support the mission of Eureka College.

The Donald B. Cerf Center is a focal point

of campus activity, housing the “Burgoo“

-- the campus snack bar -- and the College

Bookstore. The Cerf Center also houses the

Ronald W. Reagan Museum. It is frequently

the site of public and private events.

ABOUT THE FACULTYEureka College faculty play a pivotal role

in working toward the success of each

and every EC student. The College has an

average class size of fi fteen students and

a student-faculty ratio of 12:1. Many faculty

have earned national and international

recognition in their areas of scholarship,

such as: social responses to alcoholism, the

history of slavery; recognition in lepidoptery,

philosophy, Native American literature;

and individually recognized Fulbright

Scholarship recipients.

SIMPLY PUTEureka College is one of the best

educational experiences that a prospective

student can have. Eureka College is a

remarkable family, populated with some of

the fi nest, dedicated, caring individuals in

the world. Over 150 years of excellence

in learning, service, and leadership is our

guiding force. Unfortunately, the College

simply cannot accommodate everyone.

Entrance is limited. This opportunity should

not be allowed to slip by.

THE PRESIDENT’S WELCOMEOn behalf of all Eureka College students, faculty, staff, alumni and

trustees, I am pleased to welcome you to Eureka College. We are

happy to have you on campus as we observe our 158th year of

excellence in learning, leadership and service.

Athletics play an important role in the lives of students at

Eureka College. Nearly half of our students play a sport at the

intercollegiate level and most other students participate at the

intramural level. Athletic teams are integral to the educational

process, providing means to learn leadership, discipline, tenacity,

persistence and cooperation.

I am proud of the student-athletes that you are watching today.

They are wonderful ambassadors for Eureka College, and their

efforts exemplify learning outside of the classroom, developing teamwork and building school

spirit.

J. David Arnold, Ph.D.

President of the College

THE REAGAN INFLUENCEThey were simply known as Dutch and Moon, nicknames passed down from their father. Ron

was thought to have resembled “the Dutchman” while Neil looked like comic strip character

“Moon Mullins” with his slicked back hair. The names stuck.

During his four years at Eureka, Reagan demonstrated his gratitude by immersing himself in

the life of the College. He even convinced his older brother Neil to enroll in the fall of 1928,

creating the enviable situation of his older brother waiting on him as a pledge at the TKE

house.

Ronald Reagan graduated in 1932 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in social science and

economics. He moved to Davenport, Iowa, to accept a position as a sports announcer for

radio station WOC. His career led him on to Hollywood and then into state and national

politics, but his loyalty to Eureka College was evidenced by his three six-year terms on the

College’s Board of Trustees and his continual involvement in various college related events.

In his 1992 Commencement address, President Reagan related the experience of the class

of 1932. “We took with us from Eureka College the strength born of a spirit of fellowship,

willingness to work together for common goals, and a deep faith in the word of God.” In the

case of Ronald Reagan, who graduated from Eureka in the early years of the Depression,

those values propelled him to a lifetime of leadership.

From sports broadcaster, to actor, to politician, Dutch Reagan’s four years of personal

development at Eureka launched him into a lifetime of leadership.

Nearly 300 Eureka College students participate in athletics. A total of 27 student-athletes earned their degrees in May 2012.

2013 EUREKA COLLEGE SOFTBALL MEDIA GUIDE

Paul Bryant is in his fi fth year as the Director of Athletics at Eureka College. Since Bryant arrived at the helm of Eureka’s athletic

department in the summer of 2008, the Red Devils have experienced unprecedented success on the playing fi eld and in the classroom.

After only two Eureka squads qualifi ed for the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference postseason from 2006 through 2009, the

Red Devils have qualifi ed for eight SLIAC Tournaments in Bryant’s four-plus years as Director of Athletics, including championship game

appearances by men’s basketball in 2010 and 2013, and women’s basketball in 2012. In all, fi ve of Eureka’s nine eligible programs

have played in the SLIAC Tournament during Bryant’s tenure, including multiple appearances from men’s basketball (2010, 2012, 2013)

and women’s basketball (2012, 2013).

In addition to the strides the Red Devils have made on the playing fi eld, Bryant

has also placed a signifi cant emphasis on academics, creating the Director

of Athletics Honor Roll prior to the 2009-10 academic year. A record-high 81

student athletes were named to the A.D. Honor Roll in Spring 2010, while Eureka

is represented on a regular basis on the SLIAC and Upper Midwest Athletic

Conference All-Academic Teams. Eureka earned a total of 27 academic all-

conference selections during the 2011-12 year, and fi ve student-athletes to earn

the award participated in more than one sport.

Bryant has also made tremendous use of Eureka’s celebrated athletics history,

welcoming a pair of Eureka College Hall of Famers back to the athletics staff as

head coaches.

On Dec. 4, 2008, Bryant hired 1998 EC graduate Kurt Barth to direct the Eureka

football program. Barth, who starred on the gridiron for the Red Devils from 1994

through 1997, has rapidly made his mark on the Red Devils. Barth has coached

Eureka to its most successful three-season stretch in more than a decade and

posted the best 30-game debut by a Eureka football coach since 1997. Barth’s

infl uence has also allowed the Red Devils to produce record-breaking statistics

on the playing fi eld, as Eureka has broken 14 team and individual program

records since his arrival in 2009.

Nearly one year later to the day after Barth’s arrival, Bryant chose Eureka icon

Craig Gerdes as the new head coach of the baseball squad on Dec. 1, 2009.

Gerdes promptly guided to the Red Devils to a program-record 19 victories and

their fi rst-ever appearance in the SLIAC Tournament in 2010. The effort earned

Gerdes SLIAC Coach of the Year honors. The 1971 Eureka graduate won 31

games in two seasons as head coach prior to his retirement in 2011.

Bryant has spearheaded several projects to improve Eureka’s

on-campus facilities. In June 2011, Bryant secured the funding

for the purchase and installation of a new hardwood fl oor in the

Reagan Center. The surface, formerly used as a practice fl oor

by the NBA’s Minnesota Timberwolves, gives Eureka a regulation

hardwood fl oor for basketball and volleyball for the fi rst time since

2008. In addition to the hardwood fl oor, two new state-of-the-art

Nevco scoreboards were installed in the arena in December 2010,

and new shot clocks were installed in June 2012.

The latest facilities improvement under Bryant’s watch was “The

McKinzie Project”. A permanent brick wall was installed at the

Red Devils’ football facility along Reagan Drive in addition to

improvements to the visiting bleachers and the installation of a new

fence behind the visitors’ sideline.

A native of Dayton, Ohio, Bryant was formerly Associate Director of

Athletics at Urbana University in Urbana, Ohio. In addition to his

administrative duties at UU, Bryant served as the men’s basketball

head coach for fi ve seasons. While guiding the Blue Knights,

Bryant was chosen as the American Mideast South Division Coach

of the Year and American Mideast Conference Coach of the Year.

Before coaching at Urbana, Bryant began his coaching career

at the collegiate level during the 1996-97 season as a men’s

basketball assistant coach at Sinclair Community College in

Dayton, Ohio. He went on to become the head coach at Sinclair

the following season, directing the Pride for six seasons from 1997

until 2003.

During his six seasons, Bryant won 88 games, led Sinclair to four

NJCAA Division II regional appearances, two national tournament

berths and a national runner-up fi nish in 1998. He was named the

Great Lakes Region Coach of the Year.

While in Dayton, Bryant also served for eight years as the CEO of

the community’s Learn to Lead youth services agency, where he

licensed foster parents and placed foster children in appropriate

homes.

Bryant played four years of college basketball between North Idaho

College and Alaska Pacifi c University before earning a bachelor’s

degree from APU in 1989 and a master of education degree from

Urbana University.

Bryant is a member of the National Association of Basketball

Coaches, Black Coaches and Administrators and the National

Association of College Directors of Athletics. He also served

as the SLIAC Administrative Council Chair during the 2010-11

academic year.

Bryant and his wife Shannon reside in Eureka and have two

children, Kayla (18) and Paul, Jr. (12). Kayla is a freshman at

Eureka College and a member of the women’s basketball team.

2013 EUREKA COLLEGE SOFTBALL MEDIA GUIDE

Debi Neff will enter her fi rst season as head coach of the Eureka College softball program in 2013. Neff, who was named head coach

by Director of Athletic Paul Bryant on July 3, 2012, brings nearly two decades of softball head coaching experience to the Red Devils.

Neff comes to the Red Devils after a successful run as head coach at East Peoria Community High School. She went 355-193

(.648) in 17 seasons, leading the Raiders to three Mid-Illini Conference titles (2001, 2006, 2007) and a pair of IHSA regional crowns

(2006, 2011). Her fi nal EP squad won 33 games in 2011 to break the program’s single-season wins record and advanced to the IHSA

sectional title game for the fi rst time in school history.

Under Neff’s guidance, East Peoria also won 10 consecutive Lincoln Tournament titles, set an IHSA record for most consecutive hits in

a game and another statewide record for most doubles in a game. Neff’s successful program at EP regularly developed players that

received collegiate scholarships. She also coached two players that were named Player of the Year by the Peoria Journal Star.

The LaHarpe, Ill. native is a three-time Illinois Coaches Association Coach of the Year, having earned the award at the AA level in

2007 and twice receiving the 3A award (2009, 2011). Neff served on the IHSA Softball Advisory Committee from 2000 until 2010

and also worked as the IHSA State Softball Tournament Manager at the Eastside Centre in East Peoria. She was the recipient of a

Distinguished Service Award from the IHSA in 2009.

Neff’s contributions to female youth sports extend beyond softball. She was the girls basketball head coach at East Peoria from 1993

until 1996. She also served as an IHSA volleyball offi cial from 1985 until 2010 and worked as an offi cial at fi ve IHSA state tournaments.

She was an instructor of physical education, driver education and health for 18 years at EPCHS. She was the lead teacher in each

department prior to her retirement from the faculty in 2011.

Prior to her time at EPCHS, Neff was an educator and coach at Northwestern High School (now West Prairie) in Sciota, Ill. from 1975

until 1989. She was Northwestern’s volleyball head coach for 13 seasons, as her squads earned fi ve regional titles, four conference

championships, two sectional championships and a berth in the 1977 state quarterfi nals. She also led the Huskies to four track & fi eld

league championships and went 27-9 in two seasons as the school’s softball head coach.

Before embarking on her teaching and coaching career in Sciota in 1975, Neff was selected to the American Softball Association (ASA)

Fastpitch All-Star Team in 1972.

Neff’s contributions to the Eureka softball program began before the Red Devils will even take the fi eld this spring. She helped

coordinate renovations to Eureka’s on-campus softball facility, bringing the outfi eld fences in approximately 20 feet and installing a new

warning track along the outfi eld fence.

Neff played basketball and softball at Illinois State University in Normal, Ill. and ultimately earned a B.S. in driver education/physical

education from ISU. She went on to receive an M.S. in sports administration from Western Illinois University in Macomb, Ill.

ST. LOUIS INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETIC CONFERENCE

ABOUT THE ST. LOUIS INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETIC CONFERENCEThe St Louis intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) was formally chartered in September of 1989 at Maryville University of St.

Louis and the fi rst championships were conducted during the 1990-91 school year. The constitution of the conference is structured

according to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) format and all member schools will be associated only with the NCAA.

Member institutions have adopted an NCAA competitive philosophy, which in part states, the college places special importance of the

impact of athletics on the participants rather than on the spectators. SLIAC member schools are committed to this end. Scholarships

to SLIAC schools are based on academics and need only.

There are no provisions for athletic scholarships. This helps

assure that the student-athlete is a student in the purest

sense.

The SLIAC is composed of nine private institutions in

Kentucky, Illinois and Missouri. Members are: Blackburn

College, Carlinville, Ill.; Eureka College, Eureka, Ill.;

Fontbonne University, St. Louis, Mo.; Greenville College,

Greenville, Ill.; MacMurray College, Jacksonville, Ill.; Principia

College, Elsah, Ill.; Spalding University, Louisville, Ky.;

Webster University, St. Louis, Mo.; and Westminster College,

Fulton, Mo.

SLIAC institutions provide student-athletes the opportunity

to compete on an equal and competitive level, thus

permitting the student-athletes the opportunity to compete

for conference, regional and national championships. Team

championships are contested in women’s cross country,

soccer, volleyball, basketball, softball and tennis. Men’s

championship sports are cross country, soccer, basketball,

baseball, golf and tennis.

ST. LOUIS INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETIC CONFERENCE MISSION STATEMENTTo enhance the student-athletes’ educational process through intercollegiate competitive activity encompassing the rules of fairness

based on the highest standards of integrity and sportsmanlike conduct.

Colleges and universities in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference consider the athletic experience an integral component of

the educational process. In so doing, the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference seeks to coordinate the objectives and programs

of athletics with the academic developmental objectives and to ensure the integration of athletes with other students.

2013 EUREKA COLLEGE SOFTBALL MEDIA GUIDE

SPORTS INFORMATION DIRECTOR BRYAN MOOREBryan Moore is currently in his fourth year as the Sports Information Director at Eureka College. Moore is

responsible for coordinating all athletics media relations, operating EurekaRedDevils.com and compiling results

and statistics for each of Eureka’s 18 varsity sports.

Prior to his arrival at EC in July 2009, Moore was a sports information intern at Bradley University from 2007 until

2009. He was the primary sports information contact for seven of BU’s sports, including the nationally-recognized

men’s soccer program during its run to the NCAA Division I Elite Eight in 2007. He also completed a broadcast/

media internship with the Peoria Chiefs during the 2005 season. With the Chiefs, Moore wrote news releases,

helped coordinate media operations during the 2005 Midwest League All-Star Game and called play-by-play for

the middle three innings of most home games. He has since returned to the organization as the Chiefs’ offi cial scorer since 2009.

An East Peoria native, Moore earned a B.A. in broadcasting from Western Illinois University in Macomb, Ill. in May 2006. At WIU,

Moore was the television play-by-play broadcaster for WWIR-TV from 2003 through 2006, calling WIU football, basketball, baseball,

softball and soccer. He also served as the sports director at WIUS-FM in 2006.

Moore and his wife Laura were married in July 2012. They reside in East Peoria.
