Dear Neighbor,We are continuing our initiative to enhance and expand our programs and facilities that encourages physical activity and promotes healthy lifestyles while having fun. This initiative is being promoted using the slogan “Get Active. Be Healthy. Have Fun!” This will position us as your local source for opportunities to participate in physically stimulating activities that improve fitness and well being while promoting healthy lifestyle choices. We also believe you can have fun and enjoy yourself while you are active.

We all know that physical activity and exercise are good for us, but we don’t often follow through to incorporate it into our daily lives. We want to help you become more active by offering more choices for activities and facilities that will improve your fitness and that of your family as well. The pages of this issue of Splash! are full of opportunities to play hard, get fit and have fun.

We are also focused on helping you make healthy lifestyle choices. By enrolling in our programs or using our many fine parks and facilities, you are demonstrating your commitment to a healthier life. We plan to offer simple lessons and common sense advice on how to practice a healthier lifestyle. We are partnering with other agencies in our community to offer you more healthy choices. In particular, we are working with the Atlantic General Hospital (AGH) and the Worcester County Health Department to offer community health education programs at the Community Center at Northside Park.

Finally, we believe that staying active and being more health conscious can be sustained over time through fun. We want to be sure to build in fun and enjoyment in all the programs, services and facilities we offer. We will be investing more of our resources into activities that contribute to your well being and enjoyment. That’s why we have made this position our call to action: “Get Active. Be Healthy. Have Fun!”

Sincerely,

Thomas J. Shuster Director

National Alliance For Youth Sports Selects Ocean City to Pilot New Program

The National Alliance for Youth Sports, America’s leading youth sports advocate has selected Ocean City Recreation & Parks to pilot their new program called Let’s Talk Sports.

Ocean City is proud to host the program, which if successful, will be available nationwide and internationally in the near future. This parent/child activity is designed to help kids in Ocean City, and the surrounding area, to learn life skills through sport, such as effort, leadership, fitness, sportsmanship and social skills.

Al “Hondo” Handy, Recreation Supervisor says “by being the first in the nation to implement such a program, Ocean City will be the example for the rest of the country. Children, with assistance from their parents or guardians, that successfully complete the program will receive a certificate and a tee-shirt that says, “ I am a Certified Youth Sports Kid.” So, lets talk sports, it’s more than just a game and that is why sports is often called the “Outdoor Classroom.”

Hailed by some as the “best concession stand on the East Coast,” the Home Run Café specializes in turkey clubs, Blts, pulled pork sandwiches, cheesesteaks, specialty coffee drinks, fresh squeezed lemonade, shaved ice, smoothies, and amazing breakfast favorites. Standard, but tasty concession fare, including hamburgers, all-

beef hotdogs, chili, pizza, chicken fingers, hot soft pretzels and so much more are available to hungry athletes and spectators. Our friendly staff makes all food to order, so it may take a little longer, but it’s definitely worth the wait.

For a smaller, but just as satisfying selection, the Soccer Field concession stand, located in the northwest section of the Park near the fishing pier, services soccer, lacrosse and flag football events throughout the summer and fall months. Come find our open window on the field-side of the comfort building just off our winding park pathway.

Planning to play in one of the many soccer and/or basketball tournaments held in the northside Park community center this March or april? Our concessions will be open inside to satisfy your hunger. Just follow the delightful aroma of freshly popped popcorn to the building’s kitchen area, where a full scale concession operation, still offering the best of the Home run Café’s menu, can be enjoyed.

Ocean City Recreation & Parks...get to know us!

Beautification CommitteeThe Town of Ocean City Beautification Committee is commissioned to help to determine the needs of the town for the planting, maintenance and protection of all trees on the streets and in the parks of Ocean City and to make referrals for the enforcement of the landscape code. They are, also, the Appeals Board for city landscape code violations. The Mayor and City Council appoint the members of the committee.

The Beautification Committee works in partnership with the Department of Recreation and Parks to bring the beauty of trees and color to our barrier island town. For many years, Ocean City has been the recipient of the National Arbor Day Foundation’s Tree City USA Award and the Maryland P.L.A.N.T. Award administered by the Maryland Community Forest Committee. Their major projects are:

TreeMendous Memorials – Benches in various parks can be purchased to remember or honor a loved one or friend. Contact 410-520-5403.

Reflections of Life Tree – Metal sculpture in the Roland E. Powell Convention Center on 40th St. and Coastal Hwy. Call Toni Wagner (410-250-0892) to purchase a leaf or stepping stone to honor or remember a special person or group.

Partnerships in Bloom – Places beautiful Ocean City Blue container planters at selected businesses which have no in ground planting area on Coastal Hwy. or on the Boardwalk.

Decorating City Hall – Committee decorates for the holidays and the Mayor’s Open House on New Year’s Day when the public is invited to view the new historical wall panels, displays, and photographs, as well as hear stories of bygone days in Ocean City.

Arbor Day – Celebrated each year at Northside Park with second grade students of Ocean City Elementary School. In addition to skits, poems and singing, Tree City USA and MD P. L. A.N. T. Awards will be presented to the Mayor and City Council.

Beauty Spot Awards – Presented by the Mayor and City Council at a fall meeting to those who have outstandingly planted gardens with the corporate limits of Ocean City.

The devoted and enthusiastic members of this committee are Toni Wagner, Linda Herzberg, Nancy Smith, Bonnie Mitrecic, Eleanor Curcio, Joyce Melocik and Jennifer Albright. For more information about the Beautification Committee, please contact the Chairman, Donna Greenwood (410-289-7060) Please visit our website—www.oceancitymd.gov/bc for current activities, photographs and monthly gardening hints.
