    About us

    Kollaboration is an annual talent competition showcase

    and movement produced by Asian and Pacic Islander (API)

    professionals and students in 14 major cities across North

    America to promote a strong API presence and support in

    entertainment and media.

    Kollaboration was founded in 2000 by Executive

    Director Paul PK Kim. Under the guidance of

    Executive Producer Roy Choi, Kollaboration ociallyincorporated as a 501(c)(3) non-prot organization

    in 2006 and has emerged as the premier Asian and

    Pacic Islander talent showcase across North America.

    Our mission and mantra is Empowerment through

    Entertainment. In addition to encouraging the

    diverse talents of Asian Pacic Islander youth,

    Kollaboration seeks to empower:

    (1) API youth by poviding them with a ceative

    outlet and leadeship taining that seves as an

    altenative to gang-activity and delinquency fo

    those at isk.

    (2) APIfamiliesbyoeringaplatformfor

    communicationthatbridgesthegapbetweenrst

    geneation paents and latte geneation youth.

    (3) The API community at lage, by aising awaeness

    fo othe citical community issues and NGOs.

    It is evident that APIs are often categorized into a

    certain image. APIs may nd it increasingly dicult to

    get jobs outside the model minority or foreigner

    role. Such barriers often result in the lack of APIs in

    mainstream entertainment industries. Thus, APIs are

    not only unfairly portrayed but also disproportionatelyunderrepresented in the mainstream media.

    Therefore, our youth are left with few visible role

    models and a narrowed pool of aspirations.

    Through generous sponsorships, Kollaboration

    endeavors to bring about a paradigm shift of

    perceptions and to pave the way for future APIs

    to accomplish their goals and dreams that may be

    entertainment related. In contrast to our mission

    statement of Empowerment Through Entertainment,

    the ultimate vision for Kollaboration is Entertainment

    Through Empowerment, envisioning a future when

    our organization represents a movement of innovative

    and creative artistry with all races and ethnicities.

    Founder Paul Kim was also recently invited to the

    White House as part of the AAPI Initiative Whats

    Your Story campaign as one of the nine Champions

    of Change community leaders, recognizing his work

    with the Kollaboration movement. Kollaboration was

    also honored with the 2012 API Policy Summits

    Community Impact Award.

    With an initial team of volunteer sta members

    brought together by Executive Director Kevin Park

    and more volunteers joining the movement, the team

    worked together to bring the best of Seattle to the

    stage and sold out their inaugural show on October

    23, 2010 at the Auburn Performing Arts Center withover 1,100 in attendance.

    Among the eight competitors, four special guests

    and ve guest judges, many took the initiative

    to capitalize on the springboard that was the

    Kollaboration stage. Special guests New Heights,

    and competitors GOWE and The Melancholics

    have all funded successful Kickstarter fundraising

    campaigns with the help of their fans. Competitor

    Yoshi Wright of Hip Hop Anonymous went on to be

    the grand prize winner of Seattle Superstar Search2011. GOWE is fast becoming one of the fastest

    rising and well-regarded emcees. Both Samuel Shinand kings have played on the coveted stage of

    Seattles Hard Rock Cafe at TD Wangs annual APAHertiage Bash. Grand prize winner Erin Kim is nowbusy writing new songs in the midst of her rst few

    years in college.

    2011 was a year lled with events for the

    Kollaboration Seattle sta as we partnered with

    several local community organizations to put on

    more events for the API community. From artists

    concerts such as Clara Cs Shaking O SilenceTour and New Heights Album Release Party, to

    benet concerts such as United for Japan and No

    Boundaries with University of Washingtons Korean

    Student Association. Kollaboration Seattle spoke

    with high school students at Northwest Asian

    Weeklys Summer Youth Leadership Program and

    held workshops at the annual Community Health

    Plans Healthy Holidays event.

    Kollaboration also held its agship show for the

    rst time at the world famous Nokia Theater L.A.

    Live. All Kollaboration city winners were given yet

    another chance to compete for the last competitor

    position for the agship show through an online

    voting contest of their winning performance. Lions

    Ambition, the Grand Prize winner from Kollaboration

    Seattle, had the honor of performing alongside

    seven other competitors for a 2000+ audience.

    After two years down at the Auburn Performing

    Arts Center, Kollaboration Seattle will be bringing

    a bigger and better showcase this year to Seattlesoldest remaining theater in the heart of Seattle

    downtown, the Moore Theater. Kollaboration

    Seattle became the rst show of its kind in the

    Pacic Northwest. Its strong talent showcase and

    community involvement made it a historic landmark

    event for the API community in Washington. With

    such a promising start and continued eorts, this

    movement will grow and continue to spread with

    each passing year.

    Kollaboration Seattle was among ve other cities to join the

    Kollaboration movement in 2010 for its 10th year and had the

    extreme honor of capping the year as the last show hosted by

    Kollaboration founder Paul PK Kim, who retired to pursue

    other endeavors.
