May is Older  AmericansMonth. It is aperfect time to

show our appreciationfor older adults in our community

and for celebrating their

contributions and achievements.“Senior Citizens Month” wasestablished in 1963 when only 17million Americans had reachedtheir 65th birthdays. Thanks to

President Jimmy Carter, thename was changed to “Older  Americans Month” in 1980.

The theme for OAM 2012 isNever Too Old to Play! It puts a

spotlight on the important roleolder adults play in sharing their experience, wisdom, andunderstanding, and passing onthat knowledge to other generations in a variety of

significant ways.Lifelong participation in social,

creative, and physical activitieshas proven health benefits as wellas improved cognitive abilities. While Boone County Senior

Services provides services, support, and resources to older  Americans year-round, Older  Americans Month is a greatopportunity to show specialappreciation for some of our most

beloved citizens.

BCSSI is joining in the national

celebration by promoting the

month through “Fun Fridays”.

Each Friday during May, we willoffer activities between 1-3PM.

Come and join us and

remember —you are Never Too

Old to Play!

Pauline Reeves AwardedCaregiver of the Year!

Pauline has always been a selfless

person. Her husband, Mike wasdiagnosed in 2006 with Lewy BodyDementia. Pauline immediately doveinto research to learn more about hiscondition. Her knowledge savedMike‟s life when he went to thehospital for gallbladder surgery and

she stopped the nurse beforeadministering medicine that wouldreact adversely with his other medications. The next day, the headhospital pharmacist thanked Paulineand asked her to lead a panel

discussion with hospital doctors. When Pauline saw there was not alocal support group for Lewy Bodyfamilies she started one. There arecountless other things Pauline hasdone for Mike. She truly sacrificeseverything. “If I help at least oneperson, it‟s worth the time,” Paulinesays.

BCSSI is a member of the EAT Coalition withother Central Indiana

agencies. We havefound that traditionallyhunger focuses on theneeds of children. While

children do need our attention, there isanother group of individuals whoexperience food insecurity-the elderly. One of the biggest issues facing hungryseniors is the lack of awareness thatthere is a problem. Seniors are themost vulnerable population. Perhapsthey have no family or no one whocares for them. The elderly may have

to decide whether to buy prescriptiondrugs or groceries.

Therefore, the EAT Coalition wasformed. Members have come together for 3 reasons:E-Education A-Access C-Choice

Each month the group will focus onEducation, Access, & Choice by using aspecific theme. BCSSI will discuss thetopic during our Lunch „n Learns, through the media, on our Facebookpage, and on our website.

SNAP To! What is SNAP? During themonth of May BCSSI will talk about thisvery important program for seniors.

2-1-1. The 2-1-1 program is all about

sharing information and finding

resources. During June BCSSI willshare what this means.

Grandparent Visitation

By Tamie Jo Morog, attorney

I frequently receive calls fromgrandparents because they areprevented from visiting their grandchildren. Other calls come from

grandparents who have been raisinggrandchildren due to the parents‟problems with the law, the parents‟drug problems, or because theparents generally ignore their responsibilities to care for their children and now the parents deny

the grandparents visitation with thegrandchildren.

Common law does not automaticallyprovide grandparents visitation rights.Statutory law, however, does provide

visitation rights to grandparents.Indiana Code § 31-17-5-1 providesrelief to grandparents if the child‟sparent is deceased, the marriage of the child‟s parents has been dissolvedin Indiana or, in certain instances, when the child is born out of wedlock.

Thus, the only time grandparents mayseek court granted visitation is if adivorce has occurred, a child is bornout of wedlock, or one of the child‟s

parent is deceased. If the child wasborn during a marriage and the parentsare still married, the grandparents donot have the statutory right to seekvisitation with their grandchild. Thisright of visitation exists for grandparents of the custodial parent

and non-custodial parent alike. In evaluating a grandparent‟s requestfor visitation, Indiana courts are guidedby the “best interest” of the childstandard. In determining the child‟sbest interest, typically the court

considers whether a grandparent hashistorically had or attempted to havemeaningful contact with the child and if so, the extent of this contact andrelationship.

An objective of the legislature in

enacting the grandparent visitationstatute was to strengthen family bondsin an era which has seen generaldisintegration of these bonds. From apolicy perspective, grandparentvisitation is designed to promote

intergenerational contact andstrengthen the bonds of an extendedfamily when the family itself has been

8/2/2019 2012 May June for Website

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/2012-may-june-for-website 15/20

15

dissolved. In many cases, a specialbond develops which is significantlybeneficial to both the grandparents

and the grandchildren.

In reality, in interpreting thegrandparent visitation statute, thecourts are reluctant to order visitation. The perspective, generally, is that thechild‟s parents know what is in the

best interest of their child. The courtshave been more willing to entertaingrandparent visitation requests whenthe grandparent is the parent of thenon-custodial parent and the non-custodial parent is not involved with

the child. In these instances, our courts will look at the relationshipthese grandparents had with thegrandchild prior to the custodialparent‟s refusal to allow visitation tothe grandparents.

The adults should remember that thechild has almost always suffered atleast one terrible loss. The adultslove the child and should realize thata legal war over who is fit/unfit, stable/unstable or legally forced into or

forced out of the children‟s lives isdetrimental to the child.

Parents should welcome and desiretheir child‟s grandparent‟sinvolvement with the grandchild.

Unfortunately, though, children aretoo often used as pawns or adultslose sight of what is in the best

interest of the children. Allgenerations are extremely importantin a child‟s life for any number of

reasons. Before withholding a childfrom their grandparent, the parentshould focus on the children and thefuture of the family. As Charlie Asher, the founder of www.uptoparents.orglikes to remind attorneys, “Parentsand grandparents alike need to

understand they have one scorecard, the children‟s well-being, and theyeach score well by reducing conflict, building cooperation and beingcourteous and; No legal „victory‟stands to restore the parent-

grandparent cooperation that childrendesperately need.”

As my 8 year old son Jake‟sclassmates traveled south for springbreak, he was disappointed that hewas not going to the beach or Disney World. Little did he know Ihad a very special visit planned. Thanks to Lebanon residents Allen

Andrews, a retired history teacher and war historian and Ray Mahoy,a Vietnam Veteran, we traveledwest to the Ropkey ArmoredMuseum just outside Crawfordsville.

The museum is owned by FredRopkey who served in the U.S.Marine Corps from 1949-55. Hebegan his collection at 8 years of age when he received his great-

grandfathers civil war pistol. The museum is free to thepublic and features one of thelargest armored military collectionsin the country. It is a beautifultribute to our military history and canbe shared for generations to come.

I know the museum visit along withthe opportunity to speak with twoveterans left a lasting impression onJake‟s life. He is begging me to

return!

Thank you to Allen Andrews, RayMahoy and Fred Ropkey for sharing their knowledge andpassion with my son.
