PARK 2012 SOCCER FACT BOOK

Park University calls Parkville, Mo., and the Greater Kansas City area home, offering stu-dents the features of both small-town life and the flashing lights of a big city. With a population of more than 4,000, Parkville allows students the small-town lifestyle

and tightly knit community often times associated with small college athletics and the NAIA. Originally a trading post on the Missouri River, Parkville grew as Kansas City boomed in the late 1800s, which included the founding of Park University. Both the University and the city get their names from Col. George S. Park, who played a key role in the early development of the area. Today, Parkville’s historic downtown district, coupled with new shopping areas to the north and east, gives Park University students multiple entertainment opportunities within the area. Parkville sits within the Northland area of metropolitan Kansas City, which encompasses 15 counties, nine of which are in Missouri and six across the state line in Kansas. The North-land is locally referred to as “north of the river.” Contained wholly within Missouri, it encom-passes portions of Platte and Clay counties, including the northern half of Kansas City, Mo., and the cities of Parkville, Gladstone, Liberty and North Kansas City. Kansas City is situated at the confluence of the Kansas and Missouri rivers, often referred to as Kaw Point, straddling the border between the two states. The Kansas City Metropolitan Statistical Area, anchored by Kansas City, Mo., is the 29th largest in the United States, with an estimated population just over 2 million. A tradition-rich city known for its barbecue and storied sports history, Kansas City is currently home to Major League Baseball’s Kansas City Royals, the Kansas City Chiefs of the National Football League, Major League Soccer’s Sporting Kansas City and the Kansas Speed-way, which hosts multiple NASCAR and IRL events throughout the year, including two Sprint Cup Series event in the spring and fall. Kansas City is also home to the Kansas City T-Bones independent league baseball franchise and the Kansas City Explorers of World TeamTennis. The Sprint Center and the Power & Light District in the downtown area is one of the region’s top entertainment areas. The Sprint Center also houses the College Basketball Expe-rience, which includes the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame. A few blocks away sits historic Municipal Auditorium, home to the Buffalo Funds-NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament. In 2010, Park University made its third appearance in five seasons, and its fifth overall, in the national tournament. Additionally, the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics moved its offices downtown in the summer of 2007. Kansas City is also known for its historic shopping districts, including Westport and the Country Club Plaza, which is one of the world’s largest outdoor shopping areas designed for motor-vehicle traffic. Commonly referred to as “The Plaza,” it is home to one of the nation’s largest holiday light displays between Thanksgiving and January. In the Northland, Zona Rosa has become a popular shopping district, while Leawood Town Center and The Legends at Village West in Kansas City, Kan., keep shoppers occupied in Kansas.

Best Value, Nationwide Park continues to increase access to higher education by offering the quality under-graduate and graduate degrees students desire at locations, times and delivery formats that best serve their needs. In 2010, the University was ranked as the No. 1 value among private colleges and universities by Parents & Colleges, an online resource for parents of college-bound students. According to Parents & Colleges, institutions included on this list offer a diversity of de-grees, have affordable tuitions and/or offer generous financial aid, and report the highest SAT or ACT scores for the incoming class. Park was cited as offering “both proximity to big-city excitement and the safe, relaxed atmosphere of a small town… the student body represents 50 states and 100 countries, and the school prides itself on its diversity and global outlook. Tuition for full-time undergraduates is a fraction of other private institutions, and average class size and student-to-faculty ratio are low.”Founded Founded in 1875 in Parkville, Mo., Park University has developed into a comprehensive, independent institution that is a national leader in higher education. In 2000, Park achieved university status and now serves more than 24,000 students annually at 40 campus centers in 21 states and online.

Serving an ethnically diverse student population and non-traditional adult learners has, for many years, been central to Park’s educational mission. Even in its first year, Park University enrolled women students as well as men, something that was unusual at the time; and two of the original 17 students were Native Americans. Park was also an early integrator when it welcomed African-American students to live in Park’s residence halls in the 1950s.Present Providing such access has developed considerable diversity among the student popula-tion, with more than 650 international students from 110 countries, and a 42 percent student representation from racial, ethnic and cultural groups typically underrepresented in colleges and universities. The University has repeatedly been recognized as one of the top 100 Ameri-can colleges/universities in the nation graduating Hispanic, African-American and American-Indian students. In addition, extracurricular activities and championship-caliber athletic pro-grams complement Park’s outstanding scholastic programs. Park offers numerous degree programs online, and it maintains a long-standing rela-tionship with the U.S. military for which it has been recognized as one of the largest pro-viders of online undergraduate education to military learners worldwide. Park has received international recognition by Military Advanced Education magazine as one of its “Top 20 Mil-itary-Friendly Colleges and Universities,” citing Park’s “innovative academic degree programs steeped in excellence.”

In 2011-12, English had chief oversight in Park’s newest addition to its list of facilities when the Track & Field Complex opened as a train-ing ground for the track and cross country teams. The six-lane, compe-tition-ready track sits adjacent to the 1,500-seat Julian Field, which is also undergoing seating renovations in 2012-13, and the Park Univer-sity Softball Complex, which will feature an upgraded sound system in the upcoming year. English’s tenure has also included the opening of Comfort Field, home to the Park University baseball program, an agreement with The National Golf Club of Kansas City, which gives the women’s golf pro-gram one of the finest practice and competition facilities in the Mid-west, and Breckon Sports Center, home to the Park University men’s and women’s volleyball programs, in addition to administrative offices. In 2010, English was honored for his service as an athletics ad-ministrator by being inducted into the McLendon Minority Athletics Administrators Hall of Fame, representing the NAIA in a group of sev-en individuals honored by the John McLendon Minority Scholarship Foundation, which supports the McLendon Minority Postgraduate Scholarship fund. Later in 2010-11, English was honored by a second hall of fame in his home town, earning a spot in the Chattahoochee Valley Sports Hall of Fame in Columbus, Ga. English began his affiliation with Park University in the 1992-93 men’s basketball season, beginning a 15-year coaching run with the Pirates that saw a trip to the NAIA Fab Four in 1998 and 182 coach-ing wins, making English the Pirates’ winningest coach. He owns 227 total wins, which includes a three-year head coaching stint at his alma mater, the University of Rhode Island, an NCAA Division I school in the Atlantic 10 Conference. He was the A-10 coach of the year in 1981-82, and in 1997-98, after guiding Park to a 27-8 overall mark, the win-ningest season in a Park history that dates back to 1961-62, he was honored with the Charles A. Krigel Award for outstanding sportsman-ship. His team was also honored that season, earning the Dr. James Naismith-Emil S. Liston Sportsmanship Award. In his playing career, English was a two-year standout at Christian College in Dallas, Texas, before finishing his collegiate career at Rhode Island. After college, English was drafted by the Portland Trail Blazers and played one NBA season, 1970-71, before finishing his basketball career with the Hartford Capitals of the Eastern Basketball Association. He was a three-year captain for the Capitals and helped the team to an Eastern Association title in 1973-74. When the men’s soccer season begins Saturday, question marks will be addressed for Park University head coach Efrem Shimlis. He returns both goal keepers, his scor-

ing leader, and his assists leader from 2011, but the 12th-year head coach will turn to a young batch of newcomers to fill a few vital roles left behind by the 2011 roster. George Kennedy, last season’s leading goal scorer (five goals, two assists) returns to the 2012 lineup, along with Dawit Gebremar-iam, who led ball distribution with three assists, adding four goals. Kiel Williams leads the remaining pack of returners on the offensive side of the ball, which also includes seniors Phillip Hayes (five games played), Anass Moudfir (nine starts), and Devon Mehaffey (seven starts). Defensively, Nermin Abidovic (17 games played and started) and Nick Cintron (four games played) return to the back line, which will help Park’s two returning keepers, Ryan Miller and Reece Harris, who combined for a 1.39 goals-against average and 76 saves in 2011. Harris played in 11 games with 36 saves last season, and Miller finished 2011 with 37 saves, playing 13 games between the posts. Both are expected to see time in 2012. “Having two keepers back with experience is critical for our team,” Shimlis said. “Kiel (Williams) and Dawit (Gebremariam) start-ed in every game last year, and they’ll lead our returners. All of our returners have to set the tone and show the new guys how we go about things in this program.” Park’s newcomer class, which includes 11 new faces, in all, is sparked by five players from Chile, who Shimlis describes as tough players who play the game with a lot of heart. “We have a young team with a lot of new players, so it will take time for our chemistry to be right,” Shimlis said. “So far, though, things are the way we need them to be. The guys are taking the first step, and that’s working hard. They also have the right attitude to get us where we need to be, but we are a long way from where I’d like to

see us in November.” Shimlis expects Johans Bucholz, a freshman defender from San-tiago, Chile, to fill a gap left by two all-conference defenders, Rob-ert Palmer and Alain Matingou, who were the backfield’s anchors in 2011. Ignacio Flores could also add to the defensive depth, and Max Albayay is another Chilean defensive player that will add to the Pi-rates’ midfield. Offensively, Andreas Sharpe, also from Santiago, is expected to fill a scoring gap left by four players who departed from the 2011 roster and scored at least one goal last season.

George Kennedy returns five goals and two assists from last season’s AMC tournament runner-up team.

PARK 2012 SOCCER FACT BOOK

Ken Hefner enters his eighth season as the head coach of the Park Uni-versity women’s soccer program, entering the season with a mark of 83-41-11 (.656 winning percentage) at Park, while his overall record,

including 29 wins as a men’s head coach, is 252-174-20. In women’s games, Hefner is 223-161-18 all time. The Pirates finished the 2011 campaign with an overall record of 11-8-0 and were 8-2 in the American Midwest Conference, including five straight shutouts from Oct. 19 to Nov. 17 where Park outscored its opponents 23-0. Hefner has carried the winning tradition of the Park women’s soccer pro-gram leading the Pirates to its 22nd winning season in 24 years of competi-tion and the 21st time with at least 10 wins.

In 2010, Hefner was named AMC Coach of the Year, sharing the honor with two other league coaches after leading Park to a share of the AMC regular season championship. His Pirates finished with an overall record of 12-5-2, following an 8-2 mark in AMC games. Hefner took the Pirates to the AMC Tournament championship game where the team earned its 10th-straight decision without a defeat, drawing at McKendree University and ending the season on penalty kicks. His 2010 team set a school record for one-goal outcomes, as all five losses in 2010 came by a single tally, and in all, the team had eight one-goal decisions during the year. Ashley Maxwell head-lined Hefner’s all-conference selections by being named AMC Player of the Year. During the 2009 sea-son, Hefner’s Pirates qualified for the postseason for the fifth-straight season and were within striking distance of an AMC title throughout the regular season, scoring 63 goals on the year while holding opponents to just 10. Hefner led the Pirates to their eighth NAIA National Tournament appearance in 2008 after claim-ing their third-straight MCAC regular season championship and fourth in the previous five years, cap-ping the conference season with a second-straight MCAC Tournament championship at Julian Field. Park finished the year with a 14-2-3 record, losing to NAIA national champion Lee University in Daytona Beach, Fla. At the conclusion of the 2008 season, Hefner garnered a pair of honors, being named NSCAA/adidas NAIA Midwest Region Coach of the Year, as well as MCAC Co-Coach of the Year. He also coached nine all-conference players, two of which went on to be named NAIA All-Americans. Hefner ranks as the eighth winningest coach in NAIA history, owning 223 career women’s wins in seven seasons at Park, seven seasons at Lindsey Wilson College (1993-1999) and three seasons at Tennessee Wesleyan College (1990-93). Additionally, Hefner posted 19 wins as the head coach at NCAA Division I Arkansas State, helping his career coaching wins total to eighth all-time among NAIA women’s coaches. He also has 29 men’s wins from his time at Tennessee Wesleyan to push his overall career total to 252 wins. In 1999, Hefner was tabbed to lead a start-up soccer program at Arkansas State, which began play in 2000. His teams qualified for the Sun Belt Conference tournament four years in a row under his guidance and had three players named to the all-conference team from 2000-2003. In addition to Hefner’s success on the field, his players have enjoyed success in the classroom. At Lindsey Wilson, he had 18 academic all-conference selections and eight NAIA All-America Scholar-Athletes. During his time at Arkansas State, his team owned an overall GPA of 3.0 or better in six of seven semesters. Hefner owns a United States Soccer Federation National B License, an Advanced Na-tional License, and an NSCAA National Diploma. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology from West Georgia College in 1987. He and his wife, Dawn, have three children, Matthew (26), Megan (25), and Mackenzie (21).

Kitti Katona begins her third season as an assistant coach for the team she helped build into a defensive power, moving to the Park sideline after four years as a starting defender for the Pirates between 2005

and 2009. Katona began her playing career at Park in 2005, earning 20 starts and scoring three of her five career goals as a freshman. In the 2006 season, she helped orchestrate one of the nation’s top defen-sive turnarounds, as the Park defense held opponents to just 10 goals after allowing 39 the previous season. She sat out 2007 with a knee injury, but bounced back in 2008, again anchoring a defense that held opponents to less than 20 goals, giving up 17 on the year. She also scored her fourth career goal during the 2008 campaign and helped the Pirates advance to the NAIA national tournament, marking her third appearance on the NAIA’s national

stage. She graduated in 2010 with a degree in international business and is currently attending gradu-ate school at Park University.

PARK 2012 SOCCER FACT BOOK

As the Park University women’s soccer team starts its American Midwest Conference regular season title defense Saturday, it will rely heavily on its veteran lineup according to head coach

Ken Hefner. “Like everyone else we have high hopes for this team,” Hefner said. “The immediate challenge is to understand each other and fit the pieces together, but we have put the preseason to good use. It has given us the ability to raise our fitness level, our technical level, and more importantly the relationship of players on the field.” Hefner enters his eighth season at the helm of the Pirates with eight starters of the 12 returning players from a year ago, one which saw Park finish 11-8 overall (8-2 AMC) earning the No. 1 seed in the AMC Tournament, where it fell in extra time to Hannibal-LaGrange in the championship match. Dana Hemmingsen, the Pirates’ leading scorer from last season (18 goals, nine assists), returns to the lineup for her senior campaign after being named an NAIA Honorable Mention All-American and AMC First-Team All-Conference selection in 2011. She finished the season as the second-leading scorer in the AMC. “Dana is a talented attacking player with and array of combina-tion and finishing skills,” Hefner added. “She has prepared herself for this year and is leading the team in attacking opportunities in train-ing so far.” Three other AMC First-Team honorees are back for 2012 in se-niors Nichole Hemmingsen (one goal, two assists), Juneille Watkins (six goals, 10 assists), and Melanie Brewer (19 starts). Brewer will anchor the Park defense along with junior Cara Ligh-tle, an honorable mention all-conference selection in 2011, sopho-more Christina Harold, and senior J’Vonelle Simpson. The four com-bined to start 73 games on the back line last season. “All five seniors are stepping up and providing leadership,” He-fner said. “They know the aches and pains we have put ourselves

through the last couple of years and want to get rid of that label of ‘almost’. We have been on the very edge for the last three years and it is time for us to break through this barrier.” A pair of goalkeepers in senior Ellen Ghirardi (0.91 goals against average) and sophomore Alisha Hoskins (1.78 GAA) are back be-tween the posts for Park. The duo backstopped the Pirates to five-consecutive shutouts last season heading into the AMC champion-ship match with HLG. Park faces a challenging schedule from the opening match as it takes on three opponents that reached the NAIA National Tourna-ment last season (Graceland, Baker, Hannibal-LaGrange). Both Grace-land and Baker open the season ranked in the top 20 of the NAIA Preseason poll. “The non-conference portion of our schedule is brutal and every game is a challenge,” Hefner said. “These games will make us grow up quickly, but more importantly we must embrace the challenges and fight through each game. With a larger conference schedule, there are more chances for mistakes so we must take each of these games one at a time and be the conference leader in soccer.”

NAIA Honorable Mention All-American Dana Hemmingsen leads Park into the 2012 season.
