11 OF THE TOP 20 SUBURBS FOOD STORE SALES INCREASED; 9 DECREASED
Food Storesales include food consumed at home. Food sold in super stores or supercenters is often included in the GeneralMerchandise category. Thus, food dollars have shifted around toward many big box discount stores. The Chicago areasupermarket industry continues in transition as Jewel moves aggressively to remodel, Dominicks stores struggle to regainlost market share. Additionally, new stores are being added by independents and Marianos Fresh Market, along withsuperstores such as Costco, Sams Club, Wal-Mart Supercenters, Super Target, Meijer, and Woodmans. National smallerfood chains like Aldi, Food 4 Less, Trader Joes, and Whole Foods have added new stores. The decline in the Food StoresCategory has been surprising throughout the recession. Ordinarily, food store sales go up when Eating & Drinking Place salesgo down. In this recession, both went down, but Food Store sales the most.
Total Food Store sales for the Chicago Metro area in 2011 amounted to approximately $13.1 billion, increasing $321.4million, or 2.52%. The City of Chicagosaw its Food Storesales decrease by $93.1 millionin 2011 to $3.65 billion.Table 8depicts the Food Storesales results for 2007 through 2011.

OBSERVATIONS FOR 2012
In summary, 2012 will be a year of continuing recovery as retailers and restaurants claw their way back toward the 2007retail sales levels. Unemployment, and the slow growth in new jobs, combined with inflation, will continue to make 2012 adifficult year. (Especially, if Europe implodes). Filling retail vacancies will continue to be a problem. In our opinion, the realretail growth will occur in 2013. The consumer will remain cautious until unemployment moderates and incomes andhousing values begin to rise. Then we will begin to see some real increases in pent-up retail demand.
Note:Our analysis of sales changes is based upon 2007, 2008 and 2009, 2010, and 2011 retail sales tax data provided in Report ofSales Tax Receipts by Standard Industrial Classification for 2012 compiled and published quarterly and annually by theIllinois Department of Revenue. If any errors exist in the data, we take no responsibility for them since we have accepted theStates data as complete.
