2012 Singapore Cricket Association
Women’s International Cricket Challenge
INTRODUCTIONClare Cannon, Chair - Cricket Without Borders
Last year, Cricket Without Borders undertook its inaugural tour to England and Singapore. I always maintained that this tour would be a one off; but the spirit of the tour, and the fun and the experiences we all had got in our blood—and so we are off again! This time it is to play in the “Girls’ Cricket Festival” in Singapore.
We are deeply indebted to Saktti Mane Hammond of the Singapore Cricket Club for getting this tournament off the ground. Our thanks also to Prakash Vijaykumar of the Singapore Association for working with Saktti to bring in not only Singapore, but Japan, Thailand, Hong Kong and a Sri Lankan development team to play in the Festival.
Our motto at Cricket Without Borders is: “Be bold, show sportsmanship, have fun, make friends”. This sums up how we will play the tournament. There is no doubt that we like to win, and our track record is a successful one, but CWOB is not about just winning and losing--it is about the joy of playing the game, and the way we play it. We will continue to play our unique brand of cricket which is encapsulated in Stephen Field’s “The Way we Play” ethos.
Cricket, however, is only part of the experience. Singapore is a vibrant city, and we plan to enjoy as much of its culture as we can. When we played there last year, we found that the shared curry lunch was as important to the Singaporeans as the game itself. It is traditions such as these which make cricket “the great game.”
Fresh from the great success of the Dunkeld camp, Stephen Field is back to coach the team again. (Stephen will have some good insights to share on some of the competition as he has previously coached the Japanese national team).
There seems to be no one worth knowing in the cricket world whom Ken Jacobs doesn’t know! We may not know them, but they now certainly know about us! Ken has come up trumps with two three year sponsors in Pink Finance and Jeffrey Thomas and Partners. Cyan Sporting Images is again supporting our tour booklet, Albion has come on board with helmets and cricket bags, and we now welcome York Transport and Quick Cut Laser as supporters. We are again supporting the McGrath Foundation and travelling, and playing, in pink! We are now also community partners with the Melbourne Stars t20 franchise, and will have their star on our shirts.
It is fantastic to have Nat Schilov back as team manager to keep all the team on track—somehow always smiling.
A big welcome to Sarah Elliott, CWOB’s Manger Tours and Performance. It is wonderful to have Sarah on board before she heads off to her Southern Stars camp in Brisbane. We are very lucky to have someone of her experience involved with CWOB.
Mel Jones is unable to join us on the tour this year as she is travelling pre Olympics with her business which represents basket ballers and netballers around the world. We are delighted, however, that Mel is remaining in the loop in her role as CWOB Ambassador.
Again we welcome family, friends and supporters on the tour. It is great that you are coming along to share in the adventure. The CWOB “family” continues to grow, and the word is spreading.
A fi nal piece of advice to the players: wear the uniform with pride and respect; and enjoy the cricket, the curries and the culture in Singapore!

“THE WAY WE PLAY”
Cricket Without Borders plays a “fresh” brand of cricket which is all about developing the individual skills of its players, and the women’s game as a whole.
Our philosophy is:
Be Bold
Show Sportsmanship
Have Fun
Make Friends.
The CWOB way of play allows for a free fl owing game as girls are encouraged to play their shots and try new skills. The purpose of any game is always about developing the players’ cricket fi rst and foremost, without an eye on the scoreboard. Competitiveness is not lost, however, in this format: if you take away the “fear” of the win/lose scenario, the scoreboard will take care of itself.
The winner in this format is always the game itself. CWOB values respect for the game, respect for the players, and respect for the umpires and offi cials as paramount. Once these are taken as given, the enjoyment of a good contest is what it is all about.
The wonderful thing about cricket is that it is not all about being on the fi eld. Friendships and fun can be had while waiting to bat or running the drinks - CWOB girls always take the opportunity to talk and make friends with the opposition team. This is the way friendships are forged and opportunities are grasped.
CWOB style is young, fresh, dynamic and feminine. The aim is always personal best.

Funniest cricket moment: Guy who sledged us all day from Benalla in Melbourne Country Week game as a fast bowler and continued to harp on whilst Benalla looked like chasing down our score easily. He came in at number 7 and was at the other end with his team having 1.3 overs to get 1 run to win. Again he sledged as he thought the end was nigh. Our bowler then took a hat trick from his last 3 deliveries, leaving the sledger to score one run off the fi nal over with no spare wickets in hand. Of course fi rst ball he was bowled by our spinner and apart from our boys having a fair laugh at his expense, it got funnier when the Benalla bus left him behind and he had to come and beg for a lift. Interesting sideline to the story was if they won Benalla would have played off in the fi nal, as it turned out they were relegated with us. The following year we played them in fi rst round and won and the rest of the week was washed out and they got relegated again. Moral to the story: Play cricket like the CWOB girls and nothing will come back to bite you.
Actually in 30 years of playing and coaching cricket there have been plenty of funny moments and watching the Japan national women’s team try and teach the rest of the nation’s how to play backyard cricket in the dark, surrounded by stinging nettles and with very little English up their sleeve was pretty good too.
Oh and this year one of my team mates who didn’t bat much and never bowled played a few games in A Grade (some of you will remember him as farmer Russ from Farmer wants a wife). We were 50 runs in front with two overs to go and I thought I’d better give him a bowl as he hadn’t batted for 3 games. After 12 deliveries he had bowled 3 legitimate balls and the fellas were rolling around the ground with laughter. Some bounced 5 or 6 times, others just missed the pitch by 2 or 3 metres. At that point I asked the umpire who was getting a bit sick of it what can I do. He said the only way he could come off was if he was injured. So I chatted to poor old Russ and explained that he would have to continue unless he was injured. Quick as a fl ash he said well I am psychologically disturbed. 6 balls later it was all over and they only needed about 30. We did win.
3 Dream Dinner guests: Sir Jack Hobbs (made 99 fi rst class hundreds after his 40th birthday so it might rub off), Adam Gilchrist (just loved his approach to the game) and Bill Lawry (had a little time with him when I started with VCA and Ken and his knowledge and passion for the game was infectious).
Greatest fear: Actually it is probably not making the most of things or as most parents would say losing my kids or having them injured badly.
Teams you support: Jess tells me I have to now look at the Bulldogs as an option instead of the Pies, but it is Collingwood. I like Wigan in the premier league, but have followed Man U for many years. Not into a big bash team yet.

The McGrath Foundation was co-founded by Jane McGrath and her cricketing husband Glenn after Jane’s initial recovery from breast cancer. It was Jane’s personal experience that led her to believe that the McGrath Foundation should raise money to place McGrath Breast Care Nurses in communities right across Australia, as well as increase breast awareness in young Australian women.
Today, the McGrath Foundation is working to ensure every Australian woman diagnosed with breast cancer, and her family, has access to the support of a breast care nurse, as well as encouraging all young Australian women to be breast aware.
As of May 2011, there are currently 61 McGrath Breast Care Nurses supporting women diagnosed with breast cancer and their families in communities throughout Australia, helping to coordinate care and ensure their physical, psychological and basic support needs are met, regardless of their financial situation.
To date, these 61 McGrath Breast Care Nurses have helped support over 7,500 Australian families experiencing breast cancer. Jane’s breast cancer diagnosis at only 31 led her to be passionate about encouraging all women, including younger women (under 40), to be breast aware by regularly checking their breasts for any changes, as Jane believed early detection meant more effective treatment. Everyday, the Australian community supports the McGrath Foundation by making donations, hosting or attending community events, or purchasing a pink product in our name. With the help of the Australian public, the Federal Government, our generous Corporate Friends and our supportive Foundation Friends, the McGrath Foundation continues to work tirelessly to ensure there is a breast care nurse to support every Australian woman diagnosed with breast cancer and her family. To find out more about the McGrath Foundation and how you can help make a difference, please visit our website (www.mcgrathfoundation.com.au), or join us on Facebook (www.facebook.com/mcgrathfoundation) or Twitter (www.twitter.com/mcgrathfdn) and encourage your friends to do the same.
Together, we can make a difference!
