Young or not quite so young, music lives
in all of us. It’s powerful. Can you hear it?
For the 54th time in our history, the beat goes on. From
Dvořák to Debussy to Doc, the Milwaukee Symphony
Orchestra celebrates the liberating power of music. Listen
with your heart. You’ll find the lost art of relaxation is alive
and well whenever the MSO is playing.
Settle in, sit back, and relax. And dare to be free — wrapped
warmly in the magical sound of a live performance.

Through the veil of impressionism, their music beguiles and seduces. Debussy’s gentle Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun would shatter musical convention, while his Ibéria is an intoxicating evocation of Spain. Ravel, too, would offer his impression in the Rhapsodie espagnole, while his setting of Shéhérazade explores the exotic.

Dvorák: Symphony No. 9Whose World?March 7, 2013 | 7:30p | uihlein HallEdo de Waart, conductorGerard McBurney, creative director and narratorPresented in collaboration with UWM.
For one evening only, chicago’s engaging beyond the Score® program comes to town. Designed for classical music aficionados and newcomers alike, the first half of Beyond the Score® offers a multimedia examination of the score — its context in history, how it fits into the composer’s body of works, and events in the composer’s life that shaped its creation.
Dvořák’s New World Symphony is one of the most popular pieces of orchestral music ever written. Here the idea of Echoes of Nations becomes very complex: for Dvořák’s fellow countrymen, this work is perhaps the greatest Czech symphony and expresses the composer’s longing for his homeland. For Americans, this is the first great symphony about America. For African-Americans, this is the first great orchestral work to use themes inspired by their songs and spirituals. For Native Americans, it is the first, and so far the only, great work inspired by Native American music.
Learn how this symphony grew out of Dvořák’s abandoned opera based on Longfellow’s Hiawatha epic, and how Longfellow’s inspiration itself mixes North American and European stories and ideas.
