use it to let us know your views! Every month the suggestions

will be reviewed by the committee and we will report back to

you via the newsletter to see what you think.

There have been two suggestions so far. One is to have the

calendar available as a single sheet when the newsletter goes

out.. The other is to have a money tin in the kitchen for people who have a cup of tea or

coffee to make a contribution. Any comments?

FCC ‘THROWLINE ’ CLUB MAGAZINE

This camping weekend is for youth members. We go to the wonderful Forest of Dean and paddle on the River Wye

on two days. Ideal for open boats and kayaks.

You need to bring A tent (or share one with a

friend, single sex tents only), Sleeping bag plus mat Overnight things Waterproofs and wellie

boots Canoeing things, which you

can pick up from the club on the morning.

We pitch the big club marquee so that we can all eat together and if it is raining at least we can shelter together.

Pam sorts out all the food and everyone mucks in together to prepare it and then do the clearing up afterwards.

We canoe on Saturday afternoon, a fairly long river trip and end up jumping from the Yat rock into the water. On Sunday we play on the rapids in the morning.

The cost includes the transport, the food for the weekend, campsite fees and paddling on two days. To book a place talk to Sally or Pam on the desk on Wednesdays or email Pam ([email protected]). A deposit of £10 secures your place.

YOUTH members:

This trip is for you!

5th May Ball Mill Slalom (Div 2/3) by Andrew Lyall

What a long way to Bala - 4½ hours but worth every

minute.

Challenging course starts below Bala Mill Falls - 20

gates.

What great weather, mainly dry and not cold - 12oC to 14°C.

Despite a few swims Jack Overhill came up smiling - irrepressible and

8th on Saturday.

Ben Nicol coming 3rd on Sunday out of 41 - what a pro, making it look

so easy.

Chris Bartlett coming 11th on Sunday - same time as Ben but more

penalties. 18 seconds quicker on his second run.

These 10 and 12 year olds are quick round the gates in their little

boats. What a great time they are having.

Dave Radmore from Cool Blue Canoes smiling as he won the veterans

event.

Richard Davies aged 75 has now done 51 years in slalom and still go-

ing.

What a great job Ken Cunliffe did organising the slalom. Everyone

got their runs before the water was turned off. A close run thing on Saturday!

Our two over 25 year olds were not disgraced in the division 2 event.

FCC had 5 competitors this year and only 1 in 2010 - what an im-

provement.

What an excellent B & B Mary and Mike Gareth run (Tel: 01678

521640). 5 minutes walk to the centre of Bala.

Come to the Slalom training Every Wednesday

at the Market Yard 7-8pm

And talk to Ben Nicol or to John Kent

Our first in-house canoe course

The survey we did last year asked for more canoe skills for members. Our re-sponse was a weekend course.

So Stuart organised the Saturday at Market Yard and the Sunday at Langham Farm. It was a great success and we learned a few of the one-hundred for-ward paddling strokes, some of the turning strokes including the inside pivot turn. It’s a shame Stu forgot the support strokes though, because we needed them on the open boat trip we did at the end of May!

Then on the Sunday, in some slightly moving water, we did a bit of ferryglid-ing. We tried poling which worked well but the tracking and lining was a dis-aster. We also got to use Neil’s sail but with only a little wind, we didn’t get far.

By way of thanks we gave Stu a thorough drenching - he wasn’t too cross!

The open boat trip at the end of May where we put all the new skills together is reported on P14

Swimming Coaches on the Open Boat trip - 26th May

FCC ‘THROWLINE ’ CLUB MAGAZINE

There were a few red faces (and not from sunburn, though we did have a glorious day!) when a string of calamities made this Open Boat trip a trip to remember!

As with any FCC trip, it operated under the highest of standards with an admirable complement of qualified Coaches. Unfor-tunately this seems to have created its own problem, with onlookers left flabber-gasted by the events that followed.

Andy Vowell, an intrepid white water pad-dler, said ‘It’s unbelievable really, FCC Coaches are seasoned paddlers, you just wouldn’t expect it to happen – especially on a flattish river with hardly any flow’

As events unfolded an eye witness de-scribed seeing Head Coach RICH CARTER drop down over a weir and promptly fall out of his boat – a fellow paddler who asked for his/her anonymity to be pre-served said ‘It was just a straightforward drop, a support stroke would have done it. It’s such a shame, he was just starting to look confident on the water’.

ARTHUR BELBIN had a slightly more disas-trous day earning himself 6 points from two swims. Despite being assisted over a weir by a fellow coach he quickly capsized, staying afloat as one onlooker put it ‘for probably less than a minute’. On hearing that this had happened at not one but two weirs, club chairman Alun Jones said ‘we accept that some coaches did struggle to-day and have put in place an accelerated

learning programme for those con-cerned’.

Another Coach to make a quick exit from her boat was PAM DIXON at Clifford Weir but onlookers said this was in no way a reflection of this respected Coach’s paddling skills ‘Yeah but, no but, it was just one of those things’ said Ga-reth McGiveron the club’s vice chair.

Unexpectedly, as we are informed by sources close to STUART MILES that ‘Open Boats are his thing’, Stuart earned the most points of the day with TWO SWIMS and a TECHNICAL RESCUE. Hav-ing also benefited from the assistance of the Head Coach when shooting a weir, Stuart fell out of his boat and had to be rescued whilst clinging precariously to the weir in question. One concerned onlooker said ‘you could see he was sunk even before he even went over’. To add insult to injury Stuart went overboard again further downstream whilst at-tempting a ‘stand up and stretch’ ma-noeuvre. Unfortunately eyewitness ac-counts are sketchy about this but onlookers agreed ‘it was pretty embar-rassing really’.

Since the trip we have been able to catch up with John Kent, Club Treasurer who told us ‘we are mobilising resources to ensure that this sort of thing doesn’t happen again – all coaches will now be issued with stabilisers as a matter of

course’.

In the meantime Kath Norton who inciden-tally ACED ALL THE WEIRS, with absolutely no help whatsoever, not even a little bit (don’t believe the eye witness accounts they are not always reliable) has agreed to act as substitute coach until all those above have got their mojo back.

Frome Canoe Club organised a slalom event for the South West Region to encourage females into the sport. The day was attended by 12 people from as far away as Cornwall, Devon and Gloucester. It was a thoroughly successful day.

Thank you, Su, Kath, Isi, Stu, John and Rich for coaching.

Did you know that Frome Canoe Club is being used as an example of good practice, by our PDO (Paddlesport Development Officer). Apparently he tells other clubs about our Wednesday club sessions and how we organise the groups using the coloured bibs. He ad-vises other clubs to adopt our good practice!

Manoeuvre of the month (2) Goes to Chris Churchouse for getting stuck on lip of Clifford Weir and looking really desperate, as the realisation hits him that the outcome will be a wet exit from kayak in very shallow water. Ouch!

£1000 - a massive donation from Frome Town Council

towards the purchase and fitting of the roof lights in the upstairs room. Thank you FTC!

Frome Canoe Club is joining with the Frome Activity Day and Bike Jam, 22nd June, to offer canoe sessions to members of the general public. Can you help us on that day to introduce people to canoeing? We need volunteers to help kit out the participants and com-petent paddlers to take participants in open boats. Please let Pam know or sign the sheet if you are able to help.

Arthur after Shawford Weir. Yes, you guessed, he went swimming!

Ed: he also went swimming again at Rode Mill Weir! That’s 6 points today!
