I did not think I would ever get my Roman stripes done on my Sandy shawl, but I did and I am hoping to have the shawl done by the June meeting. I know some of you have already fin-ished and shown your shawls, but bring them to the June meeting along with anyone else who has finished so we can do a group show and tell. As if one shawl was not enough, I am also pick-ing yarn for my next Sandy shawl for my sister whose name is, you guessed it, Sandy.

Is everybody ready for the TKGV Scavenger Hunt on June 1? The Yarn Club is sponsoring another great opportunity to knit in public with a booth at the Town Center in Virginia Beach on June 15, from 3-6 p.m. Bring a chair and a cool drink, and join Rusty for a few hours of relaxing knit time.

Our final KIP activity will be a Tides game on June 29 at 7 p.m. Tickets are $11 and I will need the money by the June meeting if you want to sit with the Guild. Your families are welcome to come, too. In fact, I depend on mine to watch for any fly balls coming my way and sacrifice themselves to save the knit-ting.

Summer is almost here and before you know it, it will be September and time to turn in your knitting contest entries. If you haven’t started or even thought of a project, now would be a good time. Information about the contest is on Ravelry and has been in our newsletter, which is on Facebook. Hard-copy rules and registration forms are available at the Guild meetings.

I just glanced out my window and noticed dirt and plants flying in the air. Apparently, I forgot to close my garden gate and the Sandy shawl namesake is “plowing up” one of my boxes. That is my cue to end this letter.

WWKIP Day, June 15, 3-6 p.m. at Towne Center Fountain (in front of Bravo’s): Join Rusty and Hazel for a fun-filled afternoon of fiber and yarn. Virginia Beach is hosting a Crafter’s Day and we have all been invited to share our craft. Spinners are welcome to bring their wheels. New yarns continue to roll in. The Yarn Club has the newest creations from Pagewood Farms as well as their fabulous Denali Sock yarn. I love the new ribbon with felted flowers! Rowan introduced their first hand-dyed yarn in a beautiful fingering wool/mohair/silk and nylon blend, for socks and more. Any yarn with the Rowan name is sure to be a work of fine art. This one delivers in every colorway. There is a new indie dyer in the house. Gorgeous sock yarn, breathtaking merino/cashmere/nylon blends, scrumptious sport

weight in merino/cashmere/silk and a wonderful DK 100 per-cent superwash that will blow you away. The colors are dreamy and the fibers delightful. Oh, yeah! We also have roving com-ing in from our new supplier. Oops, I forgot to say who it is … Come in to find out! Look at the new calendar with TONS of new Knit-a-longs and classes. Join in any one or more of our spring KALs, learn a few new techniques and try out a fun pattern with friends. See www.yarnclubknits.com/Classes_Events_Yarn_Club.html. Happy Knitting, Crochet and Spinning,

Charity knitting: Thank youBy Chris Goudeau

Thanks to all who took home some of the charity yarn that I brought to our meeting. I’ll be bringing some each month for you to use. If you are knitting blankets for the Navy Marine Corp Relief Society, please remember to enclose the form with your blanket with your name on it. It would be greatly appreciated if you returned the blanket in a plastic bag.

To date, we have 20 members who have knitted charity items which were donated to 16 different organizations.

When you are looking for a project to start and/or trying to figure out what to do with your scraps of yarn, here’s a recap of the local organizations asking for knitted/crocheted items:

Pet blankets – Virginia Beach and Norfolk animal sheltersBaby blankets – Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society8” squares – Hugs from the Heart (hospice patients)

Hats and scarves for Veterans – American Red CrossCaps/blankets for kids – St. Mary’s Home, Project Linus,

Newborns in Need

We always welcome all of your knitted/crocheted items that you record on our charity log and donate every month for us to distribute, and we commend all of your efforts to make and donate items using skills other than knitting.

However, in the future, since we are a knitting guild, we will only accept and record those items that are knitted or crocheted.

Bring your items to be donated locally to the next meet-ing and we’ll see that they are distributed. Remember to sign the charity knitting log each month when you attend our meetings or email me at [email protected].

Shawl frenzy By Lynn Clements

I pick up such great information at the Guild meetings. At the May meeting, one of our members mentioned the Laylock Knitwear Design blog, www.laylock.org. Since our Guild KAL is a shawl, I checked out the "Fill-in-the-Blanks" Shawl Design pattern for $12.50; see http://bit.ly/19qoA1y.

You get an e-book with four top-down shawl shapes. The idea is that you can design your own shawl without charting

it. The author, Laylock, suggests you can even create a pattern and name it after the recipient. Our KAL shawl pattern is named after a dog, so does that count?

For mindless summer knitting, the blog also offers a Free Shawl Knitting Cheat Sheet, at http://bit.ly/115rDF1. These are neck-down shawls in five basic shapes, and you can knit away with any yarn and any stitch and decide if you want to add borders, fringe, etc. Very popular since it has been down-loaded more than 10,000 times in a year. Plus, free is good.

There's also free Circular Shawl Knitting Cheat Sheet, at http://bit.ly/15ms6H8, that's been downloaded 12,000 times.

The "What's in My Closet?" program at the May Guild meeting was excellent. Cindy and Denise Call artfully displayed their work, along with the patterns and yarn in-formation. Knit Swirls dominate the Calls's closet!

The president opened the May 2013 meeting at 7:15 p.m. and extended birthday greetings for TKGV members celebrating May birthdays. The president welcomed our guests.

The April 2013 meeting minutes were approved.

The treasurer reported the Guild’s balance as of this meeting is $4,485.00.

The charity chair advised she had yarn from the Navy/Marine Relief Society for baby items. In addition, she reported this year, to date, 17 members have completed knitting items for 12 charities.

The June program will be a round robin of how to apply fringe and other embellishments to knitted items.

Yarn Shop News:

Baa Baa Sheep: will have two trunk shows in May, one from C2Knits and one from Plymouth Yarns. On 5/18, Cheryl Moore will teach a workshop on how to fix knitting mistakes. On 6/15, Nell Knits will offer one or knitting workshops.

The Knitting Corner: will offer a four-session workshop on creative thinking on Thursday nights.

The Yarn Club: has two trunk shows now, one from Scrumptious Yarns and one from “November Knits." On 6/15, The Yarn Club will host a Knit in Public event at the Virginia Beach Town Center.

The president advised we will have a Knit in Public event on 6/29 at the Tides baseball game. The tickets are $11.00/person, and family members are welcome. Please bring your ticket money to the June meeting.

The secretary announced the particulars of the 6/1 TKGV KIP LYS Scavenger Hunt. We will meet at 9:15 a.m. at the Panera Café at Virginia Beach Blvd. and Columbus Circle for breakfast and to kick off the event. Guild members will visit our four local yarn shops to Knit in Public at the shops and answer scavenger hunt questions. Members may start the event at one of the four local shops instead of at the breakfast. We will collect the scavenger hunt answers and the Knit in Public confirmations at the June meeting to determine who earned the most points. The three Guild members who earned the highest number of points will win prizes.

The June program was a true walk in the closets of mother-and-daughter Guild members and knitters, Cindy and Denise Call. The Guild enjoyed the informative display of knitted garments both had completed, along with the patterns and yarn information.

The Ways and Means committee conducted the raffle of various donated items.

Following a review of the Fiber Kentucky Derby Hats, a winner, Sue Von Ohlsen was declared for wearing the hat that best represented fiber arts and the Kentucky Derby theme.

The Guild enjoyed the show and tell.

There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 8:45 p.m. Respectfully submitted,

Katie Gerwien Secretary, TKGV

I'm looking forward to all the members of the TKGV who will be visiting the shop on June 1 as part of the scavenger hunt. It should be a fun day. Mark your calendar for Saturday, June 15, and look for my email with details about Nell Ziroli'svisit to the shop. Ziroli, the designer behind NellKnits, will be teaching a class and demonstrating her new sock pattern. It's time to start planning your yarn road trips for July. Sixteen yarn shops throughout Virginia are participating in Get Your Knits. In addition to seeing Virginia's wonderful scenery, you'll reap the benefits listed in the description below. For a com-plete listing of participating yarn shops, go to www.getyourknits.com.

Here’s how it works: 1. Purchase a cool white cinch sack for $25 from any partici-pating independent Virginia yarn shop. 2. Enjoy 15 percent off your regularly-priced, non-special order items (excluding needles and notions) for the whole month of July. 3. In each cinch sack you’ll find a card. When you spend at least $10 at a participating shop, have your card initialed. Send the card back to us and those with the most stamps will be entered into a drawing for cool prizes! 4. For every $25 (pre-tax) you spend, you’ll be entered into a drawing for a $50 gift card at that shop. The more you add to your stash, the better your chances to add to your stash on us!

Thank youto the members of the Guild who have made me feel wel-come in the Tidewater knit-ting community. I look for-

ward to meeting many more of you. Roz Klein
