Teams continued and more about slalom

Special mentions must go to: Cucumber Wombats which was the only all-female team and they need

to be congratulated for their performance. Gine who made up two teams on the morning and so paddled twice as

far as everyone else!

Our thanks to John for organising it all, and thanks to those kind people who trekked back and forwards doing the timing and judging! It was a brilliant day in the end. It did start with some reluctant paddlers because the wind and rain were not pleasant at all. We had some bright suggestions including the gem of a comment from Kath “Let’s skip the event and go straight to the presentation”. Needless to say some of the paddlers’ faces showed a little support for this when they heard her!

Winchester Slalom, 17th May by Rich Carter

FCC ‘THROWLINE ’ CLUB MAGAZINE

A very enjoyable day was had by all at Winchester. For once the weather was glorious and the gazebo came in handy for shade! Unfortunately the water was thundering down and the eddies were vicious. It turned out to be a very wet day for me, though I hasten to add that everyone else seemed to cope with the big stoppers and fast moving water.

It was a fine group of Frome Paddlers who secured promotions, prizes and certificates today. All in all, Frome Canoe Club did us proud at this event today!

Su and Kath try something different

Here is a summary of our achievements: Chloe: First in Womens Div 4 Tierney: Second in Mens Div 4 Alex: The J12 prize in Div 4 Stuart The J14 prize in Div 4 John: First in Mens Open Kieran The J16 in Mens Open Su: First in Womens Open

Another excellent mini slalom on Friday evening, with lots of competitors and a sprinkling of helpers! Thank you Lou, Tracey and Ian for running up and down, doing the timing! Ignoring the guest paddler who joined in tonight, we saw Kath in first place, with a magnificent time of 101 secs, so the training is certainly paying off! But Kath, you need to watch out because there is someone close behind - Chloe came in not far behind. Well done Chloe in second place, with 104 secs! The full set of results is on the website. Su took some photos and we shall see them in the next issue.

Our next mini slalom is 27thJune. Come if you can!

Ed: Just in case anyone is wondering about the vicious eddies and thundering water in Rich’s article, please be reassured that Winchester is not really like that. It is a lovely slalom, flat water, and very gently moving. If you want to find out what really happened to Rich, turn to p18.

Leptospirosis - information

FCC ‘THROWLINE ’ CLUB MAGAZINE

All about Leptospirosis / Weils Disease

Leptospirosis is an infection that can affect people who come into contact

with water where rats live. It can cause a disease called Weil's disease,

which feels a little like flu with a persistent and severe headache to start

with. It is far more serious than flu and it is important that you tell your

doctor if you’re feeling unwell after kayaking/canoeing. As canoeists and

kayakers we are all at risk of suffering from this infection, but following

some basic rules can reduce the likelihood of getting it. Cover all cuts and

broken skin with waterproof plasters. It can be a bit tricky to keep the

plasters on, but your instructor will have some ideas for keeping cuts cov-

ered. Wash your hands after paddling and always before eating or drinking.

Better still, have a bath or shower after paddling.

Remember that live on the rivers that we like

to paddle.

Always after paddling and definitely

wash hands before

This article is not to alarm you - it is to give you information. Please be reassured that we are not telling you about Leptospirosis because we have any more concern than normal, at the moment - the last case in the club was about 15 years ago.

Have fun paddling, be aware of the risks and

Llandysul Slalom - by John Kent

I drove down Friday after-noon hoping to have a C2 practice with Andrew in the evening. As it turned out the water was up so we had a run down in kayaks instead. The water was still up on Saturday . We just coped by doing a slow run and came 4th out of 6. Su was supposed to

turn up in the early evening for a practice but was delayed 3 hours due to a trailer breakdown. After help from Chloe's grandad they set off late but arrived too late for practice.

The water was still up on Sunday. The plan was for Su to take Chloe down the course before the event. Half way down the course there

was a breakout left, followed by a breakout right a few yards further down. Breakout left was OK but Chloe capsized breaking in twice due to not leaning down enough and not keep paddling. At that point she got cold so gave up for the day. Such a

shame.

Kieran and Keiran just got on with prac-tice on their own. On Kieran’s second run he missed a gate and by the time he got going again it was too late. However, on the second part of the course with the harder water he really went for it which was impressive. Other Keiron took it steadily but that meant he had a slower run.

Alex in the Div 4 on the lake came 6th and so missed promotion to Div 3.

We all look forward to Langham Farm slalom on 8/9th June. I hope we will have a good club turnout!

Courses: Thank goodness we don’t do it like this anymore!

From the archives, July 1994:

Hypothermia a Speciality OR how the Canoe Safety (FSRT )used to be run!

Things didn’t look too good for the canoe safety course - there was sleet falling as I drove home from the pool session the night before the course was due to start.

I was actually quite relieved to find snow on the ground next morning so I decided to phone Rich just to confirm he had cancelled the course, and looked forward to returning to my bed with breakfast and the papers.

But this was FCC and Rich decided to go ahead. By the time we reached the Scout Hut in Bradford on Avon the snow was starting to melt but there was a bitterly cold wind. We admired the Scout facilities - just what we needed in Frome, then rushed to turn on the electric fire and the tea urn.

The morning was spent cosily in front of the fire covering theory, with each person presenting a topic in turn. After lunch we headed to the nearby river to learn the rescues. The local rowing club was appalled at the whole idea and kept their distance. The water was icy and the wind a cutting northerly. A jolly time was had by all, then we headed back to the hut to thaw out.

A good fug was generated in the little room we were using and everyone felt better after a square meal and hot drink. Graham turned up to hurl abuse

and receive abuse (nothing changes

then!) and then the softies went home

while the tough ones went to terrorise the locals at the pub, followed by a sleep at the hut.

Next morning didn’t feel any warmer though at least the sun was shining. After breakfast Rich’s victims pottered down to the river again for their test under the eagle eye of Graham and Rich. A few locals hardy enough to be out were mind-boggled by this group who voluntarily kept leaping into the water. By the end everyone was very, very cold, but no-one moaned.

Six people passed their Canoe Safety under horrid (but perhaps realistic) conditions. As the person with the relatively warm job of providing food, I felt that they were very brave even to have turned up at all that weekend. Or were they just plain mad . . . ?

Ed: we don’t do it like this any more! And to think in those days, no one had dry suits. How did they manage it?

See next page for photo of how Rich does it these days! End of June is bound to be warmer and there won’t be snow on the ground!

From Andrew Lyall re the Grand Team Event 11th May 2014

After four years of trying, Mark and I with the help of Kath, finally won the team event. (We had been second the last two years). It is not always about having the best competitors in your team as tactics are crucial. Here are some tips:- 1) If possible try and practise before the day. 2) If a slalom boat is available use it as these are quicker than a plastic boat. 3) Work together as a team. Until the last person finishes the clock is still running. Don't trip each other up! 4) It is generally quicker to have your quickest person last, second quickest first and third quickest second.

Above all, enjoy the day and like us, have another go next year. Andrew Lyall.

Ed: Yes good tips indeed, and all we need to do is to remember them all for next year’s event.

Improve your flat water canoe skills - from the basics to a competent level!

FCC Detective Agency solves yet another mystery!

A little while ago the Town Council approached the club saying that a boat had been found on the river

bank, and asked if we had we lost one! Pam duly responded and picked up the boat. It went on

display at a Wednesday club session with the notice attached. Several sug-

gestions were made as to the owner, but it was Tom K who nailed it! And the owner, Tony Rogers, was incredibly pleased to

get his boat back! THANK YOU Tom!

The committee has taken the decision to stop providing wetsuit shoes for club members to borrow at club sessions. This is due to the large number of shoes going missing. Sadly we just cannot afford to keep replacing them. But we are still selling wetsuit shoes at club sessions. At £5 a pair they are good value for money.

Bits and Pieces

Manoeuvre of the month

Rich (our Head Coach) came a cropper in the C1 race at Winchester. All credit to him, he was giving C1 a go. It went like this: a confident start and Gates 1 to 4 achieved, no problem. Rich now carries on the story “I hit the stopper, which dragged the back of the boat under the water, resulting in my capsize at gate 5.”

At this point a very surprised Rich stood up and walked to the side with his boat. Ah well, there was always the second run to excel in!

ALL CHANGE FOR THE TIVERTON TRAINING WEEKEND Our usual accommodation is not available this year so we have found another place - Haache Mill (Rock and Rapid Adventures). Set in the middle of no-where, it is a 20 minute drive from the Exe, but it has beds! They are giant beds, so cosy, and they do have mattresses! Smaller than our usual accommodation our numbers will be restricted to 36 people.

The rather nice thing about it is there is a giant climbing wall on site and we can arrange to have an evening session for a group if people are interested! This would cost an additional £10 for 1½ hours (with instructors).

Tiverton dates are 4/5th October.

Help needed!

27th July is our next starter session day, for members of the public to have a go. We need coaches and volunteers to help us from 10am till 3pm.
