f you’ve ever considered snowshoeing, now is the time to try this fabulous out-

door sport. Join the staff at Pyramid Mountain Natural Historic Area in Montville

Township and take advantage of the winter season in an entirely new way!

Introductory programs are scheduled for Sunday, January 12 and Sunday,

February 9, from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Staff and equipment from REI in East

Hanover are on hand to help you learn more about this dynamic sport. Each program

features a variety of snowshoes to try, professionals available to answer questions,

and refreshments. Once you have the background and basics, join one of the guided

snowshoe treks on the trails, or a guided hike, if there is insufficient snow. These

programs are designed for ages 8 and older, and there is a general admission fee of

$15 for ages 13 and older, and $10 for ages 8 to 12.

Registration is required as the number of demo snowshoes are limited.

If you already know how to snowshoe, or want to venture out on your own,

rent a pair of snowshoes for a one-day rental at Pyramid Mountain, adult and

children’s sizes available. Patrons must be 18 years or older to rent snowshoes.

A photo ID or rental deposit is required, and the cost is $10 per pair, paid by

cash or check only. Shoes can be rented between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m., and must be

returned between 3:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. the same day. Please call in advance to

assure that snowshoes are available and conditions are suitable.

Even in the depths of winter, gardens are center stage at The

Frelinghuysen Arboretum. On Saturday, February 22 discover

a new world of gardens with The New Jersey Aquatic Garden-

ers Club. This group of New Jersey/Metro NY aquarists focuses on the

growth, propagation, and use of aquatic plants to create a natural and

beautiful landscape in the aquarium.

From 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at The Frelinghuysen Arboretum in Morris

Township, enjoy a variety of talks and demonstrations including: Stylesin Planted Aquariums, an illustrated talk on the different styles of planted

aquariums; Basics of Aquarium Plants, a general introduction to the plant

material available for indoor aquatic gardening including information on

light and CO2 needs, along with other care requirements; and Basics of

Aquarium Setup for the Beginner, a step-by-step guide to the basics of set-

ting up an aquarium, and its necessary maintenance.

A demonstration of the setup of a Nano Aquarium is ongoing through-

out the afternoon. Following its completion, the tank is given away as a

door prize to a lucky registrant.

Accompanying this one day event is the New Jersey Aquatic Garden-ers Club month-long exhibit of photographs in the Haggerty Education

Center’s Atrium Gallery. These beautiful images take you underwater for a

‘fish eye’s view’ of these unique and spectacular ecosystems.

Magic is the theme for Matilda’s Tea Party, the 11th

annual event at The Frelinghuysen Arboretum on

Saturday, March 8, at 11 a.m. Travel back in time

to the days of both Matilda Frelinghuysen and Harry Houdini.

When Matilda Frelinghuysen was a child, magic and illusions

were all the rage, as were parlor tricks done for family and

friends. So presto! Grab your favorite young person and join us

for tea and brunch, and then enjoy a magic show up close. Will

a rabbit get pulled out of a hat?Young people create and learn a magic trick to try on their

friends at home. Appropriate for children ages 6 and up. The cost

Kids are up-to-date on the latest technol-ogy, but are they ready for time travel? With the Travels in Time Apprentice

Camp, campers can have a unique opportunity to go back in history. Campers,along with trained museum staff, travel through time to the 1840s, 1880s, and1920s to learn about historical careers throughout three different time periods.

This year campers become an apprentice at the Speedwell Iron Works,learn about being a miller at the Cooper Gristmill, and all the activities neces-sary to work as a farmer at Fosterfields Farm. This four-day interactive camp includes visits to three historic sites: His-toric Speedwell in Morristown, Fosterfields Living Historical Farm in MorrisTownship, and Cooper Gristmill in Chester Township. Campers apprenticeat each of these historic sites, learning the trades that were popular duringthese time periods, all while having fun.

“Branching Out!” is the hands-on, gardening program for young people who are encouraged to playin the dirt at The Frelinghuysen Arboretum in Morris Township. This is the 42nd gardening season forthis fun, staff-supervised educational program. It takes place on Saturdays in the spring and two daysa week in the summer, depending on the age level. Gardeners may attend the spring, summer, or bothsessions. The children learn that with a little work and much patience, the food you grow yourself is often

much better! Time to get digging and get dirty. Registration information is available on The Friends of TheFrelinghuysen Arboretum’s website at www.arboretumfriends.org. Fees and times vary by age group.

This camp focuses on skating and fundamental hockeyskills including balance, agility, and acceleration, the use of edges, puck handling,passing, and shooting. for all level of skaters. Beginner throughelite, and both children and adults have an op-

portunity to hone their skills and have fun! This excep-

tional camp is flexible for all campers and there are manyoptions available. Skaters can choose the number of days, afull-day or half-day camp, and lunch options as well. The on-ice portion of the camp allows skaters to de-velop their skills and progress to the next level. Sessionsinclude, Power Stroking, Creative Footwork, Jumps, Spins,Moves, Ice Dancing, and Artistry in Motion. The off-ice ses-sions include Ballet, Jazz, Leaps n’ Turns, Yoga, Pilates,Zumba, Circuit Training, Stretching, Conditioning, and Plyo-metrics. Private lessons are available upon request for bothon and off-ice sessions.

Beginner skaters are encouraged to take a private les-son for an assessment prior to the start of camp to ensureproper placement. Camp Sunrise Lake is an adventurous, fun-filled outdoor recreationcamp your kids will talk about for years! This one-week camp, now in its7th year of operation, is situated within the 1,000 acres of Lewis Morris

County Park in Morris Township.New to 2014 is the ‘Campers In Transition’ or CIT program. This

program provides a safe opportunity for preteens ages 12 and 13 toexperience a sense of growing independence and responsibility by of-fering new experiences and added privileges that they would not haveas a general camper. This program affords opportunities to develop andexpand their leadership skills, become a role model for younger chil-dren, assist in motivating others, and become part of a high-performingteam, all while having fun! For kids ages 5 through 11, Camp Sunrise Lake is packed with avariety of activities to enjoy. Campers can play on the sandy beach of the

beautiful Sunrise Lake or cool off after a morning of fun in the refreshingwater. They can have a blast running, jumping, and climbing across theWibit, an inflatable obstacle course that sits on the lake, or slide down thenew Zoom Floom.

Campers enjoy daily craft sessions and a wide variety of activities, suchas parachute activities, paddle boat rides, and relay races. Each weekcampers are bussed off site for a day of fun when they take a special fieldtrip! Additionally, there are special theme days that are designed aroundall the activities. The annual Junior Police Academy is an extremely popular summer camp thatprovides boys and girls lessons in police practices and the training involvedin becoming a police officer. During this five-day program, activities includephysical training, detective work, handcuffing techniques, motor vehicle stops,and tours of the county jail.

Special guests have included the Morris County Park Police MountedUnit, Sheriff’s Office, and other state and federal law enforcement agencies.Each recruit receives a hat, t-shirt, gym shorts, and bag. Upon completion ofthe Academy, recruits participate in a graduation ceremony and earn an hon-orary Junior Police Academy certificate. Class size is limited to 50 participants.

Catch the action, from 12 noon to

4 p.m. at Fosterfields Living Historical

Farm in Morris Township. Experience

a day-in-the-life as lived by early 20th-

century farm families when the estatefarm opens its doors to offer tradition-

al, hands-on winter-season activities.

Climb aboard the open-air, tractor-

pulled wagon for a memorable ride

around the farm, and get up close and

personal with the farm animals, including

horses, pigs, chickens, cows, and sheep.

Weather permitting, see the magnificent

Belgian draft horse team, Calvin and

Hobbes, haul the ice by sled to The

Willows, the Fosters’ mansion ice house.

Pitch-in and help with another cold-

weather job, and tap maple trees to col-

lect sap. Lend a hand with on-going daily

farm chores, such as collecting eggs and

sawing wood. Visit The Farmhouse, andfollow the scent of savory seasonal foods

cooking on the wood stove.

Stop by the Visitors Center auditori-

um to see a demonstration of weaving on

a loom. Visit the Transportation Exhibit

to see Charles Foster’s Rockaway car-

riage, and Caroline Foster’s Model ‘T’

Ford and Hupmobile. Be sure to try out

all the interactive displays.

The American landscape is a melt-

ing pot of diverse cultures that

have come to this country for

hundreds of years. Especially during

the 19th century, many Irish flocked

to the United States. They often heard

the well-known phrase, “Cead Mile

Failte” – which in English translates to

“A Hundred Thousand Welcomes”, as

they embarked on a new life in America.

Get to know the experiences of the Irishimmigrants who came to the Mor-

ristown area and those who worked at

Fosterfields. On Sunday, March 16,

from 12 noon to 4 p.m., at Fosterfields

Living Historical Farm, in Morris Town-

ship, explore first-hand their lives and

experiences in America as farmers and

domestic workers.

While touring Fosterfields, meet

the farmer’s wife, ‘Mrs. Cahill’ as

she is busy in the Creamery build-

ing, churning cream into butter. Stop

by the Carriage House and introduce

yourself to ‘Andrew Gibbons,’ the

coachman, before boarding an open-

air wagon ride around the farm. Join

alongside the Irish farmworkers androll up your sleeves to assist with

cracking corn, feeding chickens, pump-

ing water, and cleaning harnesses for

the horses. In the Farmhouse, follow

the delicious smells to the kitchen, and

discover what traditional Irish foods

are being prepared on the wood stove.

Role players portraying the Foster fam-

ily, owners of Fosterfields, along with

their Irish house servants welcome and

invite you for a tour of The Willows,

the Gothic Revival-style mansion.

At the Visitors Center, enjoy a

presentation by Cheryl C. Turking-

ton, author of “Ordinary Days,Extraordinary Times: Morristown

New Jersey’s Irish Immigration

Past,” and gain an insight into the

lives of other Morristown-area Irish

residents. It wasn’t all work and no

play on the farm! You can revisi t the

Irish culture through the music of

Linda Russell, hear stories of Irish

folklore, and learn to dance an Irish

jig! Also, families can make a fun

craft to remind them of their unique

visit to Fosterfields.
