Amstutz ScholarshipThe Amstutz Scholarship is the premier student recogni-tion program that shapes the legacy and secures the future of the American Association of Bovine Practitioners.

The Amstutz Scholarship supports educational and professional opportunities for outstanding students interested in careers in bovine veterinary practice. It is critical to attract outstanding, motivated students to become well-trained professionals who are prepared for the wide-ranging challenges facing 21st century bovine veterinarians.

Since 1996 when the Amstutz Scholarship Program began, 236 students from 30 different U. S. and Canadian veterinary schools have been awarded scholarships totaling $581,750. The scholarship is named in memory of Dr. Harold E. Amstutz (1919-2013), first Executive Vice-President of AABP, charter diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine, past and Honor-ary President of the World Association for Buiatrics, and Professor Emeritus, Purdue University.

Proceeds from the annual Amstutz auction and this year’s first AABP raffle, will go into the Amstutz Scholarship endowment fund. Individual member and industry dona-tions are used to support the current year’s scholarships, making the auction and raffle the primary method to grow the future of this scholarship program.

Bryan Mergen, Zoetis

Meet the Auctioneer

Bryan Mergen has been involved in the auction industry for 15 years since graduating from the Continental School of Auctioneering in 1998. He deeply enjoys all things antique and holds a special place in his heart for antique toys, vintage advertising, and vintage farm tractors and equipment. He founded Red Garage Auction Co. in 2012. He continues to work on his craft and was runner-up in the Wisconsin Auctioneer Championship Competition as the Wisconsin State Fair in the fall of 2012. Bryan is also able to switch gears from the efficiency needed in a traditional personal property auction to being an entertainer in a benefit auction format. He is equally comfortable selling a benefit event for a local hunting club or for a celebrity event in New York City. While auctioneering provides a fun hobby his stock in trade is serving as a Territory Business Manager for Zoetis in Northeastern, Wisconsin. Most importantly he is happily married to wife Beth and has two sons, Jack and Benjamin.

Item #8Idaho Outdoor Adventure

Donated by: Magic Valley VMA & Dr. Paul Biagiotti (with thanks to Dr. Keith Sterner for concept)

LIVE AUCTION

Description: The nation’s third largest milk producing state is also home to the biggest wilderness area in the lower 48. Take your choice between a guided, two-day whitewater float trip for two on the scenic and historic Salmon or Snake Rivers, or a two-day fishing trip, also for two, in blue ribbon trout and steelhead waters.

The fishing trip may entail fly casting on the fabled Silver Creek, where Ernest Hemingway once cast for trophy rainbow and brown trout, a spring (March/April) or fall steelhead outing, or a summer drift boat trip for cut-throat trout down the Salmon River beginning in glorious Stanley, Idaho.

The whitewater trip will be a two day, one night camping trip through pristine canyons in the River of No Return Wilderness, running exhilarating rapids with seasoned guides.

Trips can be tailored to individual needs and interests. Successful bidders will be responsible for airfare, local travel and some meals not provided by the guides.

Idaho is a sportsman’s and sportswoman’s paradise. Come and partake of the restorative powers of the wilderness: “I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived”. - H.D. Thoreau

“Princessa”Original Oil Painting by Phil Gross of Davis, CA

Donated by: Dr. Thomas Graham, Davis, CA

LIVE AUCTION

Description: “As a former geologist I spent a great deal of time studying and dissecting landscapes. That coupled with my experience in filmmaking and theater together inspire what ultimately ends up on my canvas.

My compositions often contain re-occurring characteristics; low or high angle perspectives, compressed telescopic viewpoints, strong contrast in lighting, objects along the foreground (like a telephone pole) that draw you in by bracketing the edge (repoussoir) and a practice called “contre jour” meaning painting into or “against” the daylight. My goal is to bring a landscape forward, vertically stretch it, imbue it with saturated colors and drama so that you ‘the viewer’ feel you are standing in and surrounded by it rather than viewing it from afar. It’s front row orchestra.”

In 2007 Gross was selected to be part of the prestigious “Yosemite Artist in Residence Program”. His work is dis-played in the California State Capital representing district 5 and he regularly exhibits with Elliot Fouts Gallery, Nat-soulas Gallery, Brigg’s Gallery and the Artery, all in north-ern California. Phil’s inspirations start with the French Impressionists, American painters Sargent, and Hopper, as well as contemporary Californian painters Thieibaud, Kondos and Tollefeson and Verkeet.

“Unlike other painters who choose to eliminate manmade objects from the picture plane, Gross puts in the stuff you always see: images of traffic signs, telephone poles, hay bales, irrigation ditches, railroad tracks and other imprints of human existence are depicted without a trace of any actual people. The effect is similar to Charles Scheeler’s paintings earlier in the century, but with more dramatic light and better color. What’s left is a lonely, quiet, intro-spective feel not unlike walking through an empty field at sunset.” Tim White, Sac News and Review 2003

40”x40” Oil Painting “GRETA” by Valerie Miller of Steel Cow Gallery

Donated by: Boehringer Ingelheim

LIVE AUCTION

Description: Valerie Miller is a popular artist among cow folk. Born and raised in Iowa, Valerie grew up surrounded by farms and animals. At an early age she developed a fascination with cattle that she carried with her through college while studying art at Bradley University and busi-ness at The University of Iowa. Her paintings isolate indi-vidual cows from the herd, showing the individual charac-ter of each of “the girls” against a vivid background with an absence of location. The signature of Valerie’s work is her unique large paintings ranging from a few feet on can-vas to 25+ft. murals on the sides of buildings and barns. Personally meeting each cow is one of the hallmarks of Valerie’s work. She visits “the girls” in fields around the world, naming each painting after the actual cow studied in the field. If the cow is unnamed, Valerie chooses a name, often for people who have influenced her.

For every design to reach its utmost level of ergonomic comfort and maximum performance we often take features and engineer/rework them into a more diminutive pattern. Vintage Hoard’s Dairyman Farm Glass

Donated by: Hoard’s Dairyman magazine

SILENT AUCTION

Item #47

Description: Vintage Hoard’s Dairyman farm glass quart milk bottle. Soon after W. D. Hoard purchased the Hoard’s Dairyman farm in 1899, it became the farm foreman’s responsibility to oversee bottling of milk from the grow-ing Guernsey herd. By 1908, all of the farm’s milk was bottled for city customers, mainly local stores.

There were no on-farm sales of bottled milk, but the farm delivered milk and cream every few days to the publish-ing plant to fill employee orders. A cooler at the plant also offered small bottles of milk for sale for lunches.

Bottling of milk and cream ended in January 1947, when changing regulations would have required costly updat-ing of equipment. Since then, these bottles have become a piece of Hoard’s Dairyman Farm history, and very few are left today. These antique glass milk bottles are rarely sold because of their unique nature and collectability.

Two Small Bovine Paintings

Donated by: Dr. Thomas Graham

SILENT AUCTION

Item #55

Description: Marie-Thérèse Brown, paints in the delta and foothills of the Sacramento Valley and throughout California especially in Santa Barbara where her two daughters live. She has also painted in Jamaica, France, Ireland, and Mexico. “I love the sport of plain air painting - pairing down my equipment, dressing for the weather, finding a good location, and getting set up. I work quickly to capture the essence of a place and to create a founda-tion for the rest of the painting. Once the shadows are established and the darkest darks and the lightest lights are indicated, I start with a focal point and build around it. I mix and blend intuitively to express the myriad shades of green and gold of the landscape. Being in the moment with nature and painting is the greatest of plea-sures. Wherever I go I take my paints.”
