Fellow Citizens of Cuyahoga Falls,

Happy New Year! 2013 will be an exciting, memorable and eventful year in the long, colorful history of Cuyahoga Falls. We will be celebratingyet another extraordinary milestone – the 125th anniversary of the Cuyahoga Falls Electric System!

We are also in the midst of numerous, extremely ambitious community development projects that have begun to help us prepare for a new era of diverse economic opportunities that will bring about a Cuyahoga Falls that is more resilient than ever.

Municipal services will continue to evolve and expand, stimulating momentum as never before in response to, and in anticipation of, the dynamicneeds of citizens and businesses. Building upon strategic partnerships with neighboring communities will also further strengthen our communityby bringing greater strength throughout the region.

With an even greater emphasis on education, cultural awareness and the arts, as well as on further development of the very best recreational opportunities, Cuyahoga Falls will continue to reinforce a unique identity and sense of pride that we all hold in our hearts as individual citizenswithin a great community.

Finally, through an intense community spirit to continue to work diligently together alongside our outstanding municipal departments and employees,Cuyahoga Falls will energetically drive forward initiatives that ensure preservation of our natural environment while clearly defining a bold and solid path for the future.

Community DevelopmentCreating Dynamic Growth OpportunitiesIn Cuyahoga Falls, the Development Department ignites opportunities! Opportunities that lead to new projects, job creationand new housing choices. Throughout the City, we provide the catalyst for growth, whether it’s a new industrial park, housingdevelopment, mixed use building, major retail center or new events in our downtown riverfront district.

The Development Department makes its mark in so many areas of the City, from providing assistance in replacing siding anda roof for a homeowner, to the demolition and new construction of a vacated, abandoned home. Having a vision for a betterfuture and a solid plan that can carry it out is what the Development Department is all about. In the last 10 years, our depart-ment has successfully obtained over $8 million dollars in grant funding to clean up contaminated industrial sites, which willpave the way for hundreds of new jobs in our community.

We have highlighted three areas of the City that were targeted for redevelopment and have experienced notable success:

State RoadThe City continues its focus on State Road. From amassive public infrastructure project, completed in2002, which placed utilities underground, providednew solar bus shelters and awesome streetscapes, tocreating incentives to encourage business renovationto the purchase and redevelopment of the formerState Road Shopping Center, the DevelopmentDepartment will certainly make its mark on the land-scape of our great community one project at a time.

South Front Street From the demolition of the Prospect Mold and Die building inMarch 2008, to the grand opening of the Watermark Building in 2012, the South Front Street area has undergone a tremendoustransformation. Where vacant industrial buildings once blocked theriver from view, we now enjoy a beautiful urban park in a walkableneighborhood which spurred the grand opening of a $10 millionresidential and retail complex in 2012. And we are not done yet!

Portage Trail A large, vacant, condemned and foreclosed property sat for years at the corner of 11th Street and Portage Trail. It was clear theproperty owner was not going to taken any steps to improve theproperty, so the Development Department stepped in to purchase

the building using federal dollars, and demolished it with grant money.Without the City’s persistence toeradicate an eyesore, a new medicaloffice building would not be underconstruction – watch the progress!

Water Utilities DivisionProtecting and conserving our precious sources ofwater is critical. The Water Utilities Division hasdeveloped a long-term plan to ensure that watersupply needs will be met for many generations tocome. Voluntary efforts of residents and businessesto report chemical spills and other potential sourcesof ground water contamination play a most importantrole within our local water quality protection plan.

Ongoing development of strategies to also reduce flooding and to improve overall surface water qualityof local streams and the Cuyahoga River is priorityin both short and long-term planning. Our water andstorm water professionals take great pride in thestrength of our community’s initiatives to preventpollution and to assure quality of life.
