Dear Alumni & Friends,
Thank you for your continued support of Thiel Athletics – your generosity
is making a difference in the lives of the more than 400 student-athletes
who represent the Blue & Gold on a yearly basis. I hope you enjoy this
edition of Cat Tracks as we recap an exciting year that saw continued
improvement on the field, mats, and courts as well as in the classroom.
I am proud to share with you some of the academic accomplishments of
our programs. Twelve of our twenty two teams earned a cumulative yearly
GPA of 3.0 or higher and once again our athletic programs had a higher
GPA then the rest of the student body. We had 80 student-athletes earn
PAC Academic Honor Roll distinction by having an in-season semester GPA
of 3.6 or higher; this brings our total to 284 student-athletes recognized
over the past four years (’09-’13) compared to only 184 in the previous
four-year period (’05-’09). We welcomed 16 new members to Chi Alpha
Sigma, the College Athlete National Honor Society, who have attained a
cumulative GPA of 3.4 or higher by their junior or senior year, have lettered
in their sport, and have been endorsed by the athletic department for their
character and community service involvement; this brings the total
membership of Chi Alpha Sigma to 71 since its inception three years ago.
I am also pleased to share with you that our overall winning percentage for
the athletic department was .503, which is the first time we have been over
.500 as a department in recent history.
In addition to the improvements in the academic and athletic arenas we are
improving our facilities as well. We are currently in the process of
renovating the athletic training room in Beeghly Gymnasium, which will
nearly triple in size. We will also be installing competition level lighting at
Alumni Stadium, which will benefit the entire campus community by
increasing the usage opportunities for not only our athletic programs, but
also intramurals, band, spirit squads, and other college and community
events. Mark your calendars for a night time home soccer doubleheader
and the first night time football game; Wednesday October 16 women’s
soccer vs. Westminster at 6:30 p.m. and the men’s team will follow at 8:30
p.m., and Saturday, November 9 football vs. Westminster at 7 p.m.
Thank you again for your continued support and I hope to see you on
campus in the near future at one of our athletic events. Go Cats!
Sincerely,
Jack Leipheimer ’74

2013 Blue-Gold Golf Outing
On a chilly Friday morning at the Greens of Greenville,
132 golfers gathered for the Thiel College Blue-Gold
Club's Golf Outing. The 132 participants was the most
to attend the annual golf outing since 2003.
The overall winners of the 32-team tournament were
Nick Reiser, Jeff Mullen, Chris Owens, and Dave
Bracco. The mixed team made up of male and female
golfers to win the outing was John Viglio, Linda
Moreland, Matt Gentile, and Todd Hedderick. The
female winners of the outing were Amy Schafer,
Barbara Blue, Amy Becher, and Melissa Erdice.
The winner of the annual Hawaii raffle was Mark Malvin
from Pittsburgh, Pa., who bought the winning ticket
from baseball student assistant, Bill Bendgen's mother.
Golfers enjoyed hot dogs, chips, and beverages for
lunch, and a catered dinner of baked chicken, pasta,
potatoes and salad in the late afternoon.
The annual outing is one of the primary fundraisers for

Fall Review
FOOTBALL
The Thiel College football team took a
significant step in the right direction in
2012, snapping a long losing streak in
dramatic fashion against Geneva
College Nov. 15 in overtime, 21-14.
Led by head coach Kurt Reiser, the
Tomcats finished 3-7 in 2012 with all
three wins coming in Presidents’
Athletic Conference play. A total of 11
players were named to PAC All-
Conference teams. The Tomcats were
led by senior defensive end Tim Taylor,
who was named to the All-PAC First
Team for the second straight season. In
all, the 11 all-conference selections
were the most by the Thiel football
team since 2007, when 14 Tomcats
were honored as all-conference picks.
Taylor concluded a brilliant career in
2012, making a strong case for
enshrinement in the Thiel College Hall
of Fame in 10 years. The 2-time All-PAC
First Team selection set career records
for tackles for loss (66.5) and sacks
(34.5) in 2012. He went on to earn All-
American accolades from the
Associated Press (Little All-American
team) and American Football Coaches’
Association (AFCA), while also being
named to the D3Football.com 2012 All-
South Region team and the CoSIDA
Academic All-District team.
With three PAC wins in 2012, the
Tomcats look to continue their
improvement in 2013.
MEN’S SOCCER
The Thiel men’s soccer team will usher
in a new era in 2013, as Chris Limle was
named the program’s new head coach.
Limle replaces Andy Hoggarth, who
resigned after six seasons at the helm
to accept an assistant coaching position
with the Division I Akron women’s
soccer team. Limle brings a strong
soccer background to the men’s soccer
program, and places an added emphasis
on giving back to the community.
The Tomcats had a successful offseason,
and the 2013 Tomcats will return three
key players who were named to the All-
PAC honorable mention team:
sophomore Arran Robertson and
seniors Francis Ahia and Erik Gabrich.
From his forward position, Ahia finished
second on the team in goals with four.
Gabrich proved to be an integral part
of the Tomcats in 2012, starting 17 of
the Thiel’s 18 matches. Robertson
showed great potential, seeing action in
all 18 of the Tomcats contests in 2012.
Rising senior forward Rory Duncan led
the Tomcats with five goals in 2012
while Luke Mesing, another rising
senior, scored two goals. A rising junior,
Troy Elsea netted two goals last season
while Conor Shanley dished out a
team-best four assists as a freshman
last fall. Also returning for the Tomcats
is senior goalkeeper Andrew Hindman,
who led the team with 53 saves a
season ago.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
The 2012 Thiel College women’s
soccer team built on the success of last
season as they finished their season 5-
11-1. Two of those wins came in
Presidents’ Athletic Conference play,
the second of which came on Oct. 13
in a 3-0 win at Chatham University. The
win marked the first time since 2004
that the Thiel women’s soccer team
won multiple conference matches in a
season.
The Tomcats placed one player on the
All-PAC team in 2012, as then-
sophomore defenseman Nicole
Jeschelnig was named an honorable
mention selection. Jeschelnig was a
defensive stopper for Thiel, playing in all
sixteen games while scoring one goal.
Another top returner for the Tomcats
is goalkeeper Mary Oakey, who led the
team with 67 saves in 2012 as a
freshman. Also returning is junior
forward Emily Skebo, who scored two
goals and added an assist as a
sophomore.
Aaron McGuiness took over as head
coach of the women’s soccer team
following the 2012 season. He spent
two seasons as an assistant for the
men’s and women’s soccer teams,
including the 2012 season when he
served as the associate head coach for
both programs.
8
CROSS COUNTRY (M & W)
The men’s and women’s cross country
teams showed continued improvement
as they revealed good showings at both
the PAC Championships and NCAA
Regionals. Also, both the men’s and
women’s teams were awarded with
2012 Division III All-Academic status by
the U.S. Track & Field and Cross
Country Coaches Association.
The men, paced by Steve Morgan,
finished fourth in the PAC
championship. Morgan, a rising junior,
was Thiel’s top finisher at the
championship race as he finished eighth
overall in a field of 96 runners. Ryan
Thomas was Thiel’s second best finisher
in just his freshman season. Thomas
finished in 20th place for the Tomcats
while Mason Bednash and Alex Knaby
both finished in the top 45.
As a team, the women finished fifth at
the PAC Championships. Meri
Steinmetz was the first to finish for the
Tomcats. In her freshman season with
the Tomcats, Steinmetz took 16th place.
The finish was good enough to be
named to an All-PAC Honorable
mention pick. The Tomcats’ next top
finisher was Stephanie Felix. Then a
freshman, Felix took 24th place while
another freshman, Megan Kidder,
finished 25th.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
The women’s volleyball team finished
the 2012-13 season 23-8 overall with
15 wins coming in conference plays. The
team’s .741 winning percentage was the
program’s best since 1983 (.778) and
the second best total in the program’s
history.
The Tomcats started their PAC
Tournament journey in the semifinals
where they faced the Bethany Bison, a
team they lost to twice in the regular
season. That was no matter as the
Tomcats defeated the Bison in four sets
to advance to the PAC Championships,
where the fell to the top-seeded
Thomas Moore Saints.
Five members of Thiel’s 2012 women’s
volleyball team were named to the All-
PAC squad. Senior middle hitter Kelly
Barzak, along with senior outside hitter
Alyssa Chine received first team nods.
Barzak received all-conference laurels
in all four of her seasons at Thiel, as she
became the all-time leader in both kills
(1,292) and total blocks (449). For
Chine, it was her third all-conference
laurel. She finished the season second
on the team with 261 kills and had a
team-best 391 digs. Chine became only
the third Tomcat in program history to
have both 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs in
a career.
Senior middle hitter Megg Andrews and
senior setter Chelsea Meister
represented the Tomcats on the All-
PAC second team while defensive
specialist Alex Hall was named to an
honorable mention selection.
TENNIS (M & W)
It was a year of firsts for the Thiel
College tennis teams, with the women’s
tennis team setting the tone by picking
up their first Presidents’ Athletic
Conference win in over 13 years during
their fall season. Freshman Sandy
Rodeheaver picked up wins at number
five singles and number three doubles
to help the Tomcats defeat the Bethany
Bison 5-4, securing Thiel’s first
conference win since Sept. 14, 1999.
Fellow freshman Lauren Mittner
showed promise in her first season as
a Tomcat, tying for the team-lead with
six singles wins.
The men’s tennis team, also under the
direction of third-year head coach Tim
Dunford, set a program record for
most wins in a season with its 14th
victory, a 6-3 win over Waynesburg
University on April 16.
The Tomcats had their best showing at
the PAC Championships since 2006, as
the Tomcats took third place behind a
pair of all-conference finishes by
sophomore Richard Parks. Parks was
victorious over fourth-seeded Erin
Thompson to secure third place in
number one singles while he and
sophomore Collin McAndrew also
teamed up to take third in number one
doubles.

Winter Review
MEN’S BASKETBALL
The men’s basketball team finished the
year with a record of 14-9. The squad
opened the season with an exhibition
victory over the Division II Clarion
University Golden Eagles 61-59 with a
dramatic buzzer-beater by senior
Anthony Harvey. The victory over
Clarion was Thiel’s first victory over a
Division II program since 1949. The
Tomcats started off the regular season
on a six-game winning streak, the best
in school history, defeating three
straight conference opponents along
the way. The Tomcats finished the
season with a 10-6 conference record
and defeated the Grove City
Wolverines in the first round of the
conference tournament before falling
to the Thomas More Saints in the
semifinals.
The Tomcats were paced by senior
Chase McKinney, who led the team in
scoring with 13.9 points per game and
a field goal percentage with 52.2
percent. He was also second on the
team in three-point percentage (34.5%)
and free-throw percentage (78.8%) and
in doing so, was named to the All-PAC
first team. Sophomore Kamran
McCaskill finished second on the team
in scoring with 10.8 points per game
and also scored a team-best 38 points
in a win over Geneva on Nov. 28.
Senior Ladell Trottly led the Tomcats in
rebounding average (7.5) and three-
point percentage (39.5%)
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
The 2012-2013 women’s basketball
team had an up-and-down season but
showed continued improvement on the
court under first-year head coach Rob
Clune. The team finished the year with
eight wins, seven of which were in the
Presidents’ Athletic Conference.
The Tomcats were led by their two
senior All-PAC selections in Kelly
Muffley (first team) and Kelly Barzak
(second team). Barzak and Muffley
finished one and two in scoring
averages on the team and first and third
in the conference with 18.1 and 17.3
points per game, respectively. Muffley
finished first in the PAC and second in
all of Division III in free-throw shooting
percentage, an astounding 92.1 percent
from the line. Muffley also finished first
in the PAC and 18th in the nation in
three-pointers made in the season with
an average of 2.8 threes per game.
Barzak finished first in the conference
and 10th in the nation in blocked shots
per game with (3.2). She also finished
second in the PAC in field goal
percentage (54.7%) and third in
rebounds per game (9.3).
Freshman point guard Kayla Welty
stepped up throughout the year and
proved to be a very important member
of the team. She averaged two assists a
game and finished second in the PAC in
minutes played per game (36.6).
Bethany Hines, Jaclyn Watkins, Hannah
Stoneman and Leanna Yeager also
played pivotal roles on the team.
WRESTLING
The young Tomcat wrestling team
finished their 2012-2013 campaign with
a dual meet record of 12-7 including
sweeps in the sixth annual Mel Berry
Dual Tournament and the Si Ostrach
Meet, which was hosted by Case
Western Reserve University. The
Tomcats also finished with three wins
and two losses in the Budd Whitehill
Dual Tournament hosted by Lycoming
College, and two wins and one loss in
the Mount Union Duals. In PAC play,
Thiel defeated Washington & Jefferson
but lost to Waynesburg.
In individual competition, freshman
165-pounder Jordan Powell became the
18th wrestler in Thiel history to
become a NCAA All-American with a
seventh-place finish in the Division III
National Championship in March. In the
tournament, Powell finished with a
record of 3-2 to mark the fifth
consecutive season that the Thiel
wrestling team has placed an All-
American and the sixth in the past
seven years.
In the PAC tournament, which was held
at Thiel, four Tomcats won individual
titles. The individual champions
included: first time winners Jordan
Powell and sophomore 141-pounder
Adam Matthews, and two-time
champions 197-pound sophomore Jake
Lowry and heavyweight senior Will
Ringer.
The PAC honored the Tomcats by
presenting them with the Team
Sportsmanship Award. Only losing a
couple top wrestlers from 2012-13, the
Tomcats will look for another strong
campaign next season.10
MEN’S VOLLEYBALL
The Thiel College men’s volleyball team
started their season off solid, taking
three out of the four matches they
played in the 2013 Thiel College
Tournament. Led by Senior Dante
McCoy, the Tomcats pushed through
their season and finished 20-12. The
men took eight wins at home and 12
on the road.
The Tomcats set school records for
wins in a season (20), and longest
winning streak (8), as they won eight
straight matches over an exhausting 13-
day stretch in March, with a 3-0 win
over Hilbert on March 30 marking the
record-setting eighth win.
The season culminated with the
Tomcats playing host to the
Continental Volleyball Conference
Tournament as the third seed in the
East Division where they fell to fourth-
ranked Carthage College in the
quarterfinals, 3-1. In his last match as a
Tomcat, senior Dante McCoy led the
team with 16 kills. Junior Corey
Hamilton handed out 23 assists and
sophomore Ian Phillips threw up a
team-best 17 digs in the final match of
the season. McCoy ended his
spectacular career as a Tomcat by
receiving his third CVC All-Conference
award when he was named to the all-
conference team.
INDOOR TRACK (M & W)
The Tomcat track and field teams had
an indoor season to remember with
many school records broken and quite
a few personal bests established.
Freshman Meri Steinmetz broke the
school record in the one-mile run
twice during the indoor season. She
first set the school record (5:38.87)
during the Dan Kinsey Invite at Oberlin
College, besting Emily Petrak's previous
record time of 5:45.94 set during the
2011 indoor season. Steinmetz shaved
precious seconds off of her best time
at the last indoor meet of the season,
recording a time of 5:29.57 at the PAC
Invitational.
Another record-breaker was freshman
Morgan Berg in the 60-meter hurdles.
She first broke the school record at
Mount Union College during the Jim
Wuske Invitational with a time of 9.47
seconds. Berg cut six seconds off of her
school record-best time at the PAC
Invitational, completing the 60-meter
hurdles in 9.41 seconds. Berg bested
LaToya Locke’s 2007 time of 9.77
seconds to break the school record.
On the men’s side, R.J. Malson notched
a lifetime-best throw in the shot put
(44-8.75) to place fourth at the PAC
Invitational. Sophomore distance
runner Steve Morgan also set a
personal best record at the Invitational,
taking fifth in the 800-meter run with a
time of 2:08.09.

BASEBALL
The Tomcat baseball team finished the
2013 season 24-18 on the year, with 16
wins in conference action, which
qualified them for the Presidents’
Athletic Conference Championship
Tournament as the second seed. It was
the first tournament berth for the
Tomcats since 2009.
The year couldn’t have started off any
better for senior Nick Rossmiller, who
threw the first perfect game in Thiel
baseball history and at the time the
16th perfect game in NCAA Division III
history on March 15, 2013 in a 14-0
victory over Hiram College. Not only
was Rossmiller a force on the mound,
he was one of the best hitters in not
only the PAC, but in the nation.
Rossmiller hit for an average of .436,
which was 22nd in the nation for
batting average. Not surprisingly, he was
named PAC Player of the Year.
Senior left fielder Eric Steininger
finished the season as the conference
hits leader (67) and led the PAC with
89 total bases on the season. He
produced 24 multi-hit and five multi-
RBI games on the season and had a 26-
game hitting streak to open the 2013
campaign. Designated hitter Jarod
Nanna hit .389, which was sixth best in
the conference, and hit six home runs,
which tied him for the conference lead.
He also ranked second in the PAC with
43 RBIs. Second baseman Eric King
finished ninth in the conference in
hitting (.364), sixth in total bases (78),
and tied for seventh in on-base
percentage (.441).
SOFTBALL
The Thiel College softball team is
looking to build on their 14-win season
(seven in the Presidents’ Athletic
Conference).
The 2012 softball team was led by
NFCA All-Region members catcher
Danielle Massengill and second
baseman Ashley Dolan. Massengill (first
team) and Dolan (second team) were
also named to the All-PAC team, along
with outfielder/pitcher Amanda
Callahan (first team). Massengill proved
to be a terror from the leadoff position
for the Tomcats, leading the PAC in
home runs (6), runs batted in (30), and
slugging percentage (.772). She also
finished second in the conference in
batting average (.456), runs scored (37),
triples (5), total bases (88). Massengill
finished third in the conference in
stolen bases (15) and on-base
percentage (.519). Dolan recorded 53
hits for the Tomcats in 2013, the second
most in a single season in the history
of the program. She also tallied 28 RBIs,
the third most in the PAC during the
regular season. She ranked fourth in
the PAC during the regular season with
a .434 batting average and seventh with
a .457 on-base percentage. Callahan hit
five triples on the season, which tied
her for the second most in the
conference in the regular season. She
ranked eighth in the PAC with a .384
batting average and ninth with a .545
slugging percentage. On the mound,
Callahan won eight games, which tied
for seventh in the conference and
struck out 74 batters, which also
ranked seventh in the PAC.
MEN’S LACROSSE
The third season for the men’s lacrosse
team showed a lot of potential for
things to come in the future. The
Tomcats finished the year at .500 for
the campaign with seven wins and seven
losses, including a program record four-
game winning streak.
The team was led by midfielders
Carmen Papa and Francis Ahia, both of
whom are rising seniors. Papa led the
team in goals (36), assists (25), and
points (61). Ahia finished second on the
team in assists (19) and third in points
(37). He also led the team in faceoff
percentage with a 59.3 win percentage.
Both Ahia and Papa showed great
leadership, as did defenseman Taylor
Zain in becoming team captains of the
young, but skillful lacrosse team.
Freshmen attackers Timothy O’Shea
and Alex Casile stepped up and showed
off the future of the team. O’Shea
finished a close second in goals (35) and
points (51). He also finished third in
assists (16). Casile proved to be a sniper
on the Tomcat attack, scoring many
times from long range. He finished third
on the team in scoring with 27 goals
and led the team with 10 man-up goals
on the season.
With only one graduating senior (Ray
McDonald), the Tomcat men’s lacrosse
teams looks to build on the .500 season
next year.
12
WOMEN’S LACROSSE
The second season of women’s
lacrosse at Thiel proved to be a season
to remember. The Tomcats finished the
year with a record of 11-7, including a
team-record seven-game winning
streak. The Tomcats were undefeated in
the PAC and capped off their year by
winning eight of their last ten games
including a 15-13 win over St. Vincent
College in the inaugural PAC women’s
lacrosse championship, which was held
at Alumni Stadium.
Two standouts were named to the
Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse
Coaches Association All-Region Team.
Sophomore midfielder Cassy Mahdi
and freshman attacker Beth Snider
were named to the All-West Region
Second Team. Mahdi was fantastic for
the Tomcats in her sophomore
campaign, leading the squad in nearly
every category, including goals (51),
assists (17), points (68), ground balls
(62), draw controls (90), and caused
turnovers (33). In Thiel’s 23-4 win over
Waynesburg on April 10, Mahdi tallied
six points on five goals and an assist,
becoming the first Tomcat to surpass
the career 100-point plateau. In just her
first collegiate season, Snider finished
third on the team with 44 goals and 56
points, while also tallying 14 assists and
25 ground balls. Snider notched at least
one goal in 17 of the Tomcats’ 18
matches, including six goals in the PAC
Championship Tournament. Her 56
points is the most in a single season by
a freshman in program history.
OUTDOOR TRACK (M & W)
The Tomcats went into the outdoor
season looking to build on an
impressive indoor campaign.
Captains junior Bobby Hritz and
sophomore Nic Jones paced the jumps
for the field team. Jones and Hritz
finished 1st and 2nd, respectively, at the
PAC Championships with high jumps of
6’4” and 6’2”. With their top finishes,
the two earned All-PAC honors. Jones
also finished third in the long jump with
a jump of 21 feet and 8.25 inches while
Hritz took fourth place in the 110-
meter hurdles with a time of 16.59
seconds. At the same meet, sophomore
R.J. Malson tallied a fourth place finish
in the shot put with a throw of 44 feet
and six inches.
On the women’s side, Meri Steinmetz
and Morgan Berg carried their
excellent showings from the indoor
season into the outdoor season with
Steinmetz finishing first in the 800-
meter run out of the “slow” heat. In
doing so, Steinmetz broke the school
record for the 800-meter, formerly held
by Erin Rodgers in 2001, with a time of
2:23:70. Senior Cassidy Kravec finished
second in the javelin (120-11) to also
earn a spot on the All-PAC team.
Morgan Berg joined Steinmetz and
Kravec on the All-PAC team with a
third place in the 100-meter hurdles
with a time of 15.43 seconds. Freshman
Taylor Kelter narrowly missed making
an All-PAC team in the discus (112-1)
with a fourth place finish.
GOLF (M & W)
Both the men’s and women’s golf teams
finished the 2012-13 seasons with
fourth-place finishes at their respective
PAC Championships.
Two Tomcats placed in the top 10
individually at the PAC Championships,
earning All-PAC recognition in doing so.
Sophomore Kayla Langer shot a 197
during the two-day tournament, good
enough for eighth place. Junior Bryan
Smith shot a combined 153, which was
good enough for a seventh place finish
in the 40-man field. It was Langer’s first
All-PAC honors and Smith’s second.
Smith was an All-PAC first team
honoree in 2012 with a second place
finish. Former All-PAC first team winner
Matt Fiore finished tied for 12th overall
with a 155 overall score, just two
strokes shy of All-PAC status. Senior
Emily Friedrich shot a 200 overall to
finish tied for 11th in the women’s field.
The season culminated with head
coach Dan McMillen ’86 receiving the
prestigious Bill Strausbaugh Award from
the PGA for leadership and service to
the Tri-State Section of the PGA and
both the men’s and women’s teams
being honored with PAC Team
Sportsmanship awards.

GREENVILLE, Pa. – Troy D. VanAken, Ph.D., president at Thiel College, will serve
as the chair of the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) Presidents’ Council in
the 2013-14 academic year, beginning July 1. VanAken succeeds Brother Norman
W. Hipps, O.S.B., president at Saint Vincent College, who served as the chair of
the PAC Presidents’ Council in 2012-13.
VanAken became the 19th president and professor of mathematics at Thiel in July
2009. Since taking leadership at Thiel, he has been active in launching many new
programs and initiatives aimed at enhancing the student experience at the
College, such as the Thiel Commitment, five new varsity sports, a marching band,
a new youth ministry major and many others.
VanAken was recently appointed to the NCAA Division III Management Council, where he will play a role in dealing with
the day-to-day operations, budgets and championships of Division III athletics.
VanAken, an enthusiastic supporter of the 24 men’s and women’s Tomcat athletic programs at Thiel, said he is delighted with
this leadership role.
“I am honored to represent the PAC both in this leadership role in the 2013-14 academic year, as well as on the NCAA
Division III Management Council. In both roles, I will continue to work actively with my colleagues to foster a positive
environment of integration of varsity athletics into the overall enterprise of higher education. The PAC has long been at the
forefront of presidential leadership and oversight of athletics in Division III, and I will endeavor to continue the outstanding
work of my predecessor, Br. Norman Hipps of Saint Vincent, as PAC Presidents’ Council chair,” said VanAken.
The Presidents’ Council holds ultimate authority and responsibility for PAC governance. The Presidents’ Council is
responsible for the establishment, direction, and if necessary, the enforcement of general policy, including the conference
office's annual budget and all other financial matters.
Thiel, a private, liberal arts college affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America located in the picturesque
town of Greenville, Pa., was founded in 1866 and chartered by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in 1870. Thiel joined the
PAC in 1958.
VanAken holds a bachelor’s degree from Hillsdale College, and master’s and doctorate degrees from Bowling Green State
University. A native of Michigan, his career in higher education began in 1994 when he was appointed assistant professor of
mathematics at the University of Evansville and where he was later selected as assistant vice president for instructional
technology. In 1999, Albion College named VanAken as vice president for information technology. After being awarded an
American Council on Education Fellowship and working at San Jose State University in 2002-2003, VanAken returned to
Albion College with expanded responsibilities as athletic director and executive assistant to the president, and eventually
vice president for business and finance. VanAken participated in Harvard University’s Institute for Educational Management in
2005 and was named Albion’s executive vice president in 2006. Dr. VanAken and his wife, Annette, have two children, Trey and
Gabriella.
With Dr. VanAken assuming the chair of the Presidents’ Council, the other standing PAC councils will also be chaired by
Thiel representatives in the upcoming academic year. Jack Leipheimer ’74, Thiel’s director of athletics, will serve as the chair
of the PAC Athletic Administrators (AA) Council, while assistant director of athletics and head softball coach Amy Schafer
will chair the PAC Senior Woman Administrators Council (SWAC) in 2013-14. The PAC Faculty Athletic Representatives
Association (PAC FARA) will be chaired by Dr. Chris Moinet, a professor in Thiel's English department.
Joe Onderko will continue to serve the PAC as its commissioner in 2013-14, beginning his eighth year directing the league
and 13th year overall with the conference this fall. Kevin Fenstermacher begins his second year as a member of the PAC staff
this fall as the league’s Assistant Commissioner/Director of Communications after an 11-year career at conference member
Thiel.

Former Tomcat debuts in ArizonaDiamondbacks farm system
Thiel College alumnus Bobby
Hillier, who signed a free-agent
contact with the Arizona
Diamondbacks in February, was
assigned to the Missoula Osprey and
made his debut on June 24.
Located in Missoula, Mont., the Osprey
compete in the Pioneer League and
play a short season as Rookie-
Advanced affiliate for the Arizona
Diamondbacks. The Osprey has won
three Pioneer League championships,
including last season.
In his debut, Hillier pitched 4 1/3
innings of relief Saturday, allowing three
earned runs on five hits. The right-
hander struck out four batters and
issued two walks.
"I felt great," Hillier said in regard to
making his debut. "When I first got up
there and got done warming up before
my first actual pitch, it hit me – my
dream came true. It was an amazing
feeling, but also a humbling feeling
knowing where God has brought me
over the years. I was so amped up,
though. It was awesome. I don't get
nervous when it comes to baseball, I
was just ready to do whatever I could
for the team."
Hillier was an All-PAC First Team
selection following his junior season
with the Tomcats, in which he was
second in the conference in hits (58)
and batting average (.423). In 2012, he
led the Tomcats with a team-low
earned-run average of 3.19 and tossed
two complete games. In 42 1/3 innings
of work in 2012, Hillier struck out 32
batters and opponents batted just .263
against him.
A native of Brook Park, Ohio, Hillier
took part in the California Winter
League in January and February, which
opened the door for the right-hander
to sign a free-agent contract with the
Arizona Diamondbacks on Feb. 17.
Hillier hit .333 (11-33) with six RBIs
and three runs scored for the
California Winter League's Palm
Desert Coyotes. He owned a .424
slugging percentage, a .389 on-base
percentage and a .920 fielding
percentage. On the hill for the
Coyotes, Hillier went 2-2 with a 5.40
earned-run average. Hillier struck out
12 batter in 10 innings and opponents
batted just .261 against him.
After his stint with the Coyotes in the
California Winter League, Hillier took
part in extended minor league spring
training within the Arizona
Diamondbacks organization prior to
his assignment to the Osprey.
Wrestling, Men’s and Women’s Golf Teamsrecipients of PAC Sportsmanship Awards
The Presidents’ Athletic Conference selected the Thiel
College men’s and women’s golf teams and the wrestling
team for the PAC Sportsmanship Awards in their respective
seasons.
The Sportsmanship Awards began in 2008-2009 to recognize
excellent sportsmanship among PAC teams. This special
honor is sponsored by a group of PAC student-athletes who
make up the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).
Each individual sport is asked to vote for the conference
team which displayed the highest level of sportsmanship
during that season.
The Thiel College men’s golf team concluded the spring
season with a fourth place finish at the PAC Championships
with a 72-hole score of 1,245. Bryan Smith earned Second
Team All-PAC honors with a seventh place finish and a
combined score of 153.
The Thiel College women’s golf team wrapped up the season
with a fourth place finish at the PAC Championships with a
combined score of 1,644. Kayla Langer led the way for the
Tomcats with an eighth place finish and a score of 197,
earning her Second Team All-PAC recognition.
The Thiel wrestling team placed second and four wrestlers
won individual titles at the PAC Championships in the
winter. Will Ringer and Jake Lowry won their second career
conference titles and Adam Matthews and Jordan Powell
won their first career titles.
