President’s Message

Kirk Kitchen, MT(ASCP)SBB

55th President, South Central

Association of Blood Banks

Did you know that Baton Rouge means “Red Stick”? And that the red

stick was used by the local natives to mark their hunting boundaries?

OK, so I may be a little slow—but I just learned this fact last summer.

The “Red Stick” also marks the spot for the South Central

Association of Blood Bank’s 55th Annual Meeting in

Baton Rouge, Louisiana, April 18-21 and AIMS

April 21-22. SCABB promises another meeting full of relevant topics for

our industry with presentations by experts in the field. It’s an

opportunity to showcase research, new ideas and discoveries

through formalized and informal exchange with experts, peers, friends and vendors. It’s also a

time to enjoy local cuisine and music...ahhh, Cajun…Zydeco…

I am pleased to present to you our Annual Meeting Preliminary Program so that you can save

the date and start making plans. You Gotta Geaux and see what Blood Banking on the Bayou

is all about!

Blood Banking on the Bayou – You Gotta Geaux!

Baton Rouge, capital city of Louisiana (LA) state, is steeped in history and was founded in the

early 1700s. Standing alongside the Mississippi River, Baton Rouge is home to an important port,

which has brought the city considerable wealth, together with oil and gas. Uncover the secrets

of one of America’s fastest growing cities and immerse yourself into the many landscapes that

define Louisiana’s capital city. From the legendary Southern cuisine that tantalizes taste buds to

the renowned action of The LSU Fighting Tigers and Southern University Jaguars, to the

blossoming film and television industry, Baton Rouge’s past is intriguing and our hospitality and

charm is contagious. The is first time the SCABB Annual Meeting has been held in Baton Rouge –

so please join us for Blood Banking on the Bayou.

The Old Governor’s Mansion is a historic house museum

listed on the National Register of Historic Places, an

elegant venue for special events. Built in 1929 by the

“Kingfish,” Huey P. Long, the Mansion served as Executive

Residence from 1930 until 1963 and housed nine of

Louisiana’s governors including Earl K. Long and the

“singing governor,” Jimmie Davis. The Mansion will serve

as the perfect venue to host the Awards Banquet as we

honor our donors and many others.

Opening Plenary

Geaux to Opening Plenary on Thursday, April 18th!

Louisiana Legend and one of the greatest college baseball coaches of all time, J.

Stanley “Skip” Bertman has made the seamless transition into the athletics director’s

chair with the same enthusiasm, vision and demand for excellence that were

trademarks of his stellar coaching career. After his tenure ended on June 30, 2008,

he remained at LSU as athletics director emeritus through 2010, working as a vital

fund-raiser for the university. In six years as LSU’s director of athletics, Bertman has

added to his impressive list of on-the-field achievements. Under his direction, LSU has

enjoyed arguably the greatest athletics seasons in the history of the institution. The

2006-07 season saw 12 LSU teams finish among the nation’s top 25, including a No. 3

final ranking for the football team and a fourth consecutive Final Four appearance by the

women’s basketball squad. The LSU men’s and women’s track and field teams each finished No. 2

in the nation. In 2005-06, LSU joined North Carolina (1997-98) as the only schools to have their

football, men’s basketball and women’s basketball teams all finish in the nation’s Top 5.

Skip Bertman’s unyielding desire to succeed drove him to the pinnacle of his profession, and his

astute knowledge of the game -- obtained from over 40 years of coaching -- combined with his

steadfast determination and irrepressible enthusiasm transformed LSU Athletics into the nation's

premier program. Bertman has been inducted into the College Baseball Hall of Fame, the

Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame and the American Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame. Skip

has established himself as a much sought after motivational speaker whose ideas about teamwork

and cooperation are concepts that energize all who hear him speak.
