NEW HOPE CELEBRATES
Ten years after our debut, New Hope Celebrates once again welcomes you to the adventure of experiencing the beauty and excitement of the quaint and colorful New Hope and Lambertville area. We cordially invite you to explore all of historic Bucks County, PA and its buffet of resources.
During our ten years as an all-volunteer LGBTA leadership marketing group, it has been our pleasure to bring to you not only our annual Pride festival, but also activities such as New Hope Celebrates Film, New Hope Celebrates Talent, New Hope Idol, New Hope Celebrates Youth and now Retro-Scope, our online LGBT history archive. We have been the scene: from memorable parties and parades to top-notch entertainment; history and art tours; train, bus and barge rides; family picnics; softball tournaments and so much more!
It is our mission and joy to share with you our peaceful and diverse community, nestled within the beauty of its cozy countryside. While you are here, take a deep breath to smell the warmth of our community; take a walk on our quiet canals; climb to historic Bowman’s Tower; see a theatrical show at the Playhouse; visit our famed art galleries; go antiquing; or amaze at the offerings available in our quirky shops, specialty restaurants and busy bars. Our world will become yours.
Most importantly, feel the power of being able to view our area as a non-stop “come as you are” party. Known for decades as an outpost for tolerance and diversity, you will find that whatever you define yourself as quickly becomes part of the palette. So–go ahead–hold hands, embrace, kiss if you feel it. Wear your tats, bring your bikes, howl if you want!
Because whatever is your uniqueness, bring it! It is revered in New Hope–a town always anxious to show off, be brave, have fun. Always ready for what’s new, what’s hot, what’s cool. Always eager to embrace the likes of YOU!

I want to welcome everyone who is celebrating the 10th anniversary of Gay Pride Week in New Hope. New Hope is more than a tourist destination as a lovely river village with history, shops, theater, galleries and excellent restaurants. Our residents pride themselves on maintaining a terrific quality of life and strong sense of community while accepting diverse lifestyles. Please take the time to see what New Hope has to offer! Larry Keller, Mayor of New Hope
We are honored to be the home of New Hope Celebrates!
It is my pleasure and privilege, as the President of New Hope Borough Council, to welcome you to the 10th Annual New Hope Celebrates Pride week. The Pride Celebration is one of the highlight events of the year, attracting thousands of people to New Hope!
Organizing an event of this magnitude is a task that requires dedication, focus and hard work. A huge “thank-you” to the committed group of volunteers, sponsors and service groups who gave freely of their time to make this week the outstanding event we have come to expect! If this is your first visit to New Hope, you will find, that as a community, we recognize and care about quality of life; we are accepting, and, expect diversity among us. We welcome all and discrimi-nate against no one. In New Hope, you are safe to be you, for you dwell among people who do not tolerate segregation but actively promote equality. You may find it interesting to know New Hope has a long and eclectic history of diversification! In the 1940’s to the early 70’s, the Bucks County Playhouse became a summer theater. It was the starting point for many actors and became the venue where plays, slated for Broadway were tried out. Grace, Liza and Ella strolled our sidewalks while Redford, Matthau and Wallach could be found at the bar in the Canal House. We have been the home to political activists, renowned artists and Playwrights. We’ve a reputation for attracting the quirky and free spirited! The gay community is well established here. Abbie Hoffman lived and died here. Daniel Garber and John Folinsbee painted our landscapes. Moss Hart, Kitty Carlisle and Oscar Hammerstein called this home. Odette Myrtle held court at Chez Odette’s while Jessica Savage and Michael Finestein perished in our canal. With this history, it is only fitting that New Hope Celebrates be acknowledged as a part of the historic fabric that is New Hope! Many of you have traveled far to share this week with us! So, unpack your bags, settle in and get ready for a New Hope Pride week! Explore our shops, retrace the steps of legends, welcome the inspiration as you explore our unforgettable town... And, when the urge to return to New Hope hits you, don’t fight it. Come on back and be prepared to stay, for a very long time.
Regards,Claire E. Shaw, DMDPresident, New Hope Borough Council
Welcome to New Hope, Bucks County, Pennsylvania

New Hope Celebrates is a non-profit 501(c)3 all-volunteer marketing organization whose mission is to provide events which stimulate LGBT tourism to New Hope from throughout the Northeast region as well as provide fun community events for local Bucks County residents. Proceeds from NHC’s events are often granted to needy LGBT organizations such as the Rainbow Room, the Trevor Foundation for LGBT troubled teen intervention, and medical groups providing help to those with HIV-AIDS.
“This week of Pride is important because it keeps New Hope on the radar of LGBT tourists nationwide,” commented Daniel Brooks, Founder and President of NHC. “Always a welcoming environment, New Hope is a mainstay in the course of LGBT history and this event gives it a chance to shine—to be discovered by some, or rediscovered by others. Open to all, it is like a springtime country fair that happens to be run by gay folks. Therein lies it’s uniqueness.”

“TRANS” is an extraordinary documentary feature film about men and women… and all the variations in between. It is about the Transgender Community, perhaps the most misunderstood and mistreated minority in America and around the world.Inspired by the incredible story of Dr. Christine McGinn, (herself a “transwoman”) and her important work as a transgender surgeon, TRANS provides an up-close and very personal vision into the lives, loves, and challenges of a remarkable cast of characters of all ages and from all walks of life.
We will meet 7-year-old Danann Tyler and her parents as she boldly sets forth on a long and complex journey. We will meet Cris, a biological female who is just discov-ering “his true gender identity.” We will follow Pam and Erica, through surgery and beyond, as they discover the thrill and the heartbreak of transitioning late in life and risking everything to be able to be “their authentic selves.” We will witness the tragedy of a teenage “male to female” who has lost her way. From the dark and dangerous streets, to the quiet sanctity of the Operating Room,TRANS will take you into a world you have never before imagined. There you will see stories of confusion and courage, excitement and emotion that have never been told—until now. Stories that will open both the mind and the heart.
“TRANS” is a documentary feature about males and females—and everything in between. It is an “Up Close and Personal” view of the Transgender Community that will change both your mind and your heart.
To anyone who ever looked in a mirror and wondered, “who they really are?” TRANS asks another question…”are you brave enough to find out?”

We Petition The Obama Administration To:Repaint the US Capitol Building to Match the Gay Pride Flag
Since not every congressional representative has a gay son to personally remind him/her that marriage equality is a basic human right, it is deemed necessary to paint the U.S. Capitol Building the colors of the gay pride flag. For those who find it easy to ignore the LGBT community's quest for the same basic rights as heterosexuals, this blast of color would provide a clear reminder of the injustice millions experience in this country. To save costs, the interior of the Capitol dome could remain the same, but the Capitol's exterior, the offices of all legislators, and the carpets of both the House and Senate floors will be converted to match the gay pride flag. Only when marriage equality is the law of the land in all 50 states may the Capitol be returned to its original color.Created: Mar 21, 2013 • www.whitehouse.gov
To change their views, Congress needs a constant reminder of the injustice millions of Americans endure because they don’t have the right to marry. Recently, Sen. Rob Portman (R-Ohio) changed his view on same-sex marriage after his own son told him he was gay. Since not every member of congress has an openly gay family member reminding them of this injustice, we hope the new paint job would remind them that the freedom to marry is a fundamental right same-sex couples deserve as well.

For Equality Pennsylvania (EQPA), the past several years have been marked by rebuilding, reorganizing and some remarkable successes.
We can point to our work helping to pass 13 local non-discrimination ordinances, or our successful initiative to establish and grow an LGBT Equality Caucus in the General Assembly. In one year alone, the Caucus expanded from 27 members in 2012 to 58 in 2013. With several allies, we stopped a constitutional amendment on marriage last year and we’ve seen policy victories ranging from securing a fully inclusive gender marker change to Pennsylvania’s driver’s licenses for the transgender community to first time conversations with the state’s Department of Aging on ways to raise cul-tural competency when it comes to working with LGBT seniors. In many instances too, EQPA has become the voice of the state’s LGBT citizens to the media and we’ve taken our place on social networking sites as a point for real information and as a community platform. Our endorsement process has seen us support candidates from across the state and once elected those we’ve endorsed have become strong advocates for the LGBT community. We are particularly pleased to have endorsed three successful statewide candidates for Treasurer, Auditor General and Attorney General. Today each of these statewide officeholders stands in support of full equality for the LGBT community including in marriage and nondiscrimination. That’s a first and a strong victory for equality. Recently we’ve seen success when we fought for the rights of LGBT students too whose access to the creation of a Gay Straight Alliance has been denied. And finally, our leadership in helping to move US Senator Bob Casey toward his full-throated support of marriage equality made national news and helped move the dial in that debate.
EQPA knows this fight is real. But we also know how to win and that’s what keeps us fighting.

Lambertville
The “Bridge” symbolizes a long standing friendly symbiosis between the unique yet connected small town communities of New Hope and Lambertville, NJ. Though in different states, the towns grew up fertilized by the seeds of shared water--first the Delaware River, an important symbol of freedom from Revolutionary days, and later the man-made canals, which brought industry and prosperity to the entire Delaware Valley.
While both towns evolved because of common bodies of water, each took on their own characters. When New Hope emerged as a more boisterous haven of the arts, Lambertville maintained a distinct essence of culture, developing an outstanding standard of proud, austere reverence to the past and a commitment to subtle and traditional excellence.
Currently a walk down Bridge or Church Street pays awesome homage to a long history, with fine antique stores, a bevy of multi-ethnic restaurants and specialized shops alongside some of the most notable “old school” as well as contemporary art galleries in the area.
Determined not to be a river reflection of its neighbor to the west, Lambertville is the essence of individuality–not a “sister city” but more the quiet and beautiful, distinguished “first cousin”–a remark-able and memorable entity of perfection.
Visit Lambertville and experience why this community has for centuries epitomized harmony and equality, while maintaining a diverse and amazingly beautiful spirit that is all its own.
