“Building Community Through Recreation”

fined) and facilities to city residents that emphasize ahealthy lifestyle, physical well-being, personal develop-

ment, citizen involvement, integration of differing culturaland economic communities, and fun.

Partnerships: The Takoma Park Recreation Depart-ment has formal partnerships established with neighbor-hood, community, business and not-for-profit organi-

zations. These partnerships allow our department toleverage resources and generate citywide interest and

support for our system facilities, programs and events. We appreciate your support!

Recreation Committee

Chair: Jay Keller, Vice-Chair: Cindy Dyballa

Members: Abraham Coleman, Carolyn Leary Bobb, Cherwanda Oliver, Christopher

King, Howard Kohn, Jane Hurst, Jen Wofford, Pat Rumbaugh, Peter Munger, Ray

Scannell, Sharon Reed

Staff from M.A.N.U.P. at a food bank with the teens!

Spotlight on our Partners - M.A.N.U.P.Making a New United People (M.A.N.U.P.) has been a solid

partner of the Takoma Park Recreation Department for the past

three years. During this time, they have made great strides in

changing the culture of young men and women in the commu-

nity. This has been accomplished by exposing teens to positive

endeavors such as going to college, giving back to the commu-nity, and achieving personal and professional goals. Another

aspect of the program focuses on defining “cool” - education,

social responsibility, self-empowerment, and economic aware-

ness; and what’s “not cool”, such as detrimental behavior that

could have long term negative effects.

M.A.N.U.P is a mentor organization made up of staff volunteers

and youth ages 12-19. Each week, on Tuesdays, the teens

meet at the Takoma Park Community Center. While at the

meeting, they have an opportunity to socialize and learn with

their peers. M.A.N.U.P. tailors to the teens by creating indi-vidualized and group mentoring sessions, forums, trips, various

academic programs, and community involvement initiatives.

An important element of the program is the mentors. The men-

tors are relatively young, positive male and female minorities,

that have come from similar environments.

Given the nature of mentorship and abstract measures,

M.A.N.U.P. believes that the full impact and outcome of their

mission will not be apparent for years to come; even with thatsaid, they are confident that lives have already been improved

in a positive way.

Short term goals include: increased graduation rates; higher

grade point averages; college admission and retention; maintain

full or part time jobs; increased attendance within the program;

the beautification and recognition of the local community; a

decrease in contact with the juvenile justice system; and the

individualized progress of each participant.

Taekwondo (Saturdays)Taekwondo, it is composed of three

parts as shown in the English spell-

ing, though it is one word in Korean.

“Tae” means “foot,” “leg,” or “to step

on”; “Kwon” means “fist” or ‘’fight’’; and

“Do” means the “way” or “discipline.”

So it can mean the way or discipline

of foot and fist. Now let us look at theterm Martial Art which is the root of

Taekwondo: Martial arts are systems of codified practices and

traditions of training for combat. Today, martial arts are studied

for various reasons including combat skills, sport, fitness, self-

defense, self-cultivation (meditation), mental discipline, char-

acter development and building self-confidence. The martial

art of Taekwondo can easily satisfy all of these reasons for

practice and many of them are practiced every day in gymna-

siums across the country. *Same class – pick which day works

Backyard CompostingWant to know the secret to a healthy thriving garden? Compost! Yard waste and vegetable scraps can make up as much as

20% of our household garbage and end up in landfills. Now that’s real waste because these are treasures when it comes to the

vitality of your garden. Costing next to nothing and easy to maintain, compost piles provide rich fertilizer for your garden. In this

workshop, we will learn what makes a good compost pile and how to make one.

Make Your Own Worm Composting BoxWorms get a bad rap, but they are actually vital to our food system. They transform the soil and leave behind the best natural

fertilizer around. But if you live in the city, finding a place to have worms and a compost pile can be difficult. Worm boxes take

up very little space, can be used indoors and provide excellent compost for your vegetable or house plants. In this workshop, we

will learn how to make and use worm composting boxes.
