Mission StatementKali Institute for Massage & Somatic Therapies, L.L.C. (KIMST) is an educational and clinical center for the advancement of somatic therapies through postsecondary academic programs, public education and therapeutic clinical services.

KIMST offers basic training in massage therapy which prepares students for California Massage Therapy Council Certification as a Massage Practitioner at 250 Hours and Therapist at 500 hours and licensure in any California municipality enabling them to work in private practice and/or with chiropractors, physical therapists, health spas, commercial massage establishments and other health care facilities.

In addition to it’s educational programs, KIMST serves as a source of information to health care practitioners and the public through public speaking engagements, access to an extensive library, and the publication of manuals, workbooks, articles and videos.

Finally, KIMST offers massage and somatic therapy sessions to the public at a low cost, performed by students who have completed the appropriate course work, and are fulfilling clinical practice requirements.

Eligibility for CA State CertificationStudents who complete the 250-hour Massage Practitioner Program are eligible to apply

for CA State Certification as Massage Practitioners. This certification qualifies them to secure business licenses from any city in CA.

The state requires 500 hours of education to qualify for the Massage Therapist Certification. If a student opts to continue his/her education beyond the 250 hour Massage Practitioner Program Certification the administrative office will send an official transcript to the California Massage Therapy Council (CAMTC) when 500 hours of education has been completed.

Students who opt to apply for these certifications are required to notify the administrative office and pay a $11 fee to have an official school transcript sent to CAMTC.

Page 5: 2013 STUDENT HANDBOOK - c1940652.r52.cf0.rackcdn.com

5

In addition, they must submit an application provided by CAMTC directly to them, accompanied by a passport photo, a copy of a CA driver’s license, a $150 application fee. Finally, they have to get a Live Scan Fingerprints completed in CA, which is automatically sent to CAMTC by the vendor.

STUDENT FEEDBACKStudents are welcome to provide feedback to the school’s directors, faculty or staff at any time. Suggestion forms are available in the administrative office. We ask that students submitting complaints include their ideas regarding possible resolution. In addition, program and class evaluation forms are available with some handout materials or from the office. These forms allow students to both acknowledge what they like about our trainers and course material as well as to make suggestions for improvement. Over the years we have made several additions and changes to our curriculum and policies based on this valuable feedback. Students in our 250-hour Massage Practitioner Program can also provide this kind of feedback at midterm and exit interviews with the directors.

REFERRALS, JOB PLACEMENT& PROFESSIONAL SUPPORT

Our graduates’ personal and professional goals involving massage and bodywork is our primary goal. While we cannot guarantee job placement or clientele, we have several ways of supporting students who have taken our programs and classes. Please take responsibility for your status in this database by maintaining communication with us regarding changes of address or phone number, current employment or private practice information and future goals through the administrative office.

Each student in our 250 hour Massage Practitioner Program is scheduled for personal midterm and exit interviews with the school directors. The midterm interview allows for discussion of the student’s personal and professional goals, progress in the program, and any special concerns regarding successful program completion. Data regarding the student’s interest in further programs/classes, nature of their intended private practice, interest in opportunities in chiropractic offices, spas, salons, health care facilities, massage establishments or joint practice with other body workers is entered into our computers for easy reference when these opportunities arise. The director may make suggestions at this time that will help the student clarify his/her goals before graduation. The exit interview provides the student with the opportunity to update this information just before graduation.

Students who have not taken our 250-hour Massage Practitioner Program are welcome to schedule a guidance session with a Director of Academic Programs & Development at any time to discuss their personal, educational professional goals and implementation strategies.

BOOKSTORE, LIBRARY & PRACTICE EQUIPMENT Our bookstore is located in the main administrative office where you can purchase binders with handouts for programs and classes, required and recommended books, massage tools and supplies and a variety of lubricants,

Page 18: 2013 STUDENT HANDBOOK - c1940652.r52.cf0.rackcdn.com

18

analgesics and aromatherapy oils. Students can also order student table and chair packages. A presentation on these packages is given in the second week of our Massage Practitioner Program.

Our library serves as an important resource to students and includes books, reference works, periodicals, anatomical models and videos on every subject included in our curriculum. These materials as well as massage tables and equipment are available to all students from noon to 5:30 p.m., Monday – Thurs. Library resources are not available to sign out or remove from the premises, but can be used on the premises during the above hours. Practice rooms can be books with the administrative office.

Educational Facilities & EquipmentKali Institute has two primary classrooms and is equipped with numerous anatomical models and bones, in addition to a library of audio-visual materials. Instructors may also use overhead or LCD projection of training materials to support students’ integration of presented topics. We also have tables, table accessories and exercise equipment which is available for student use by signing for it in the office.

HousekeepingWe believe that respect and care for healing space is one of the qualities that make a massage therapist/bodyworker great. We therefore request that you honor our space, equipment and supplies by participating in their care through any or all of the following guidelines:

Please do not enter any room to the right of the main hall with shoes on, and use the shoe racks rather than the floor of the main hall.

Please wipe down tables after use if using a lubricant. Cleaning supplies are provided and stored in the kitchen.
