ESPERANZA COMMUNITY BIKE SHOP

www.cabq.gov/parksandrecreation/recreation/bike

Esperanza Community Bike ShopEsperanza means hope. At the Esperanza Community Bike Shop we hope to create a better Albuquerque by promoting bicycle education and transporta-tion. With some basic knowledge and access to the necessary equipment bicycling can be a safe, healthy, dependable, inexpensive, and fun way to get around. The Esperanza Community Bike Shop will introduce people of all ages to the joy and freedom of bicycle riding, and provide opportunities for them to learn how to repair bicycles. At the Bike Shop we will not fix your bike for you; instead, we show you how to fix it yourself. In our classroom, participants will build confidence, critical thinking skills, self-esteem, leadership and life skills. They will also learn what it means to give back to their community - through logging community service hours, participants can earn their own bicycle and also discover they have valuable skills to offer others in need. Operating as a cooperative shop, we will provide affordable ways to acquire and maintain a bike, offer youth programs, encourage re-use and recycling, and work with community groups to get more people on bicycles.

BIKE RODEOThis program will teach the child how to “drive” their bike through a safety talk and hands-on ex-perience. The lessons learned will help the child avoid injuries and how to follow the rules of the road. The program will provide bikes, helmets, props, signs, and the best instructor in the coun-try. Groups must provide at least 15 youth, a smooth surface (parking lot or basketball court) and some adult help.

The bike rodeo is a free event offered to all community centers.

The Bike Rodeo is approrpriate for children going into 3rd grade through 6th grade. The bike Rodeo will begin witha 45 minute saftey presentation. The presentation is offered to all children at the center. After the presentation the children will be broken up into groups of 20-25 kids. The groups will rotate in 45 minute increments through the outside portion of the Bike Rodeo. The outside portion consists of the children riding through a simulated road.Cancelations may be appropriate if the weather does not permit it safe to riide, i.e. rain and lightning. If a cancelation occurs at your center our staff will do the inside presentation and ac-comodations will be made to bring the outside portion of the Bike Rodeo back to the Commu-nity Center.

Any group interested in hosting a bike safety clinic for youth ages 7-10 can call (505) 768-BIKE (2453) to schedule a Bike Rodeo.

Veterans Memorial ParkThe Veterans Memorial Park is a special place to respect our Veterans past, present and future who have served our country here and other places around the world. The design of the New Mexico Veterans’ Memorial Park is intended to speak to all veterans about their experience. From the moment of decision to become a member in service to one’s homeland, to the return home, veterans share certain experiences and memories. The design evokes those memories. The Memorial Rose Garden is located in the New Mexico Veterans’ Memo-rial Park at the southern end of Phil Chacon Park in Albuquerque, New Mexico. It is a unique place to recall experiences common to many veterans such as The Call, The Preparation, The Battle, The Conversations, The Word From Home, The Fallen Friend, and The Homecoming. The gardens, the sculptures, and the beautiful Sandia Mountains provide settings for memories, but the memories of the visitors them-selves are the true memorial. Covering 25 landscaped acres, the New Mexico Veterans’ Memorial Park provides places for reflection and celebration of those that answered the call.

FACILITY RENTALSet in the shadow of the majestic Sandia Mountains, the Memorial provides the perfect place for:

- Reunions- Meetings- Conferences- Banquets- Weddings- Showers- Family Gatherings- Receptions..and other events.

With indoor facilities that accommodate 150 guests, a private courtyard that hosts 400, and outdoor grounds that seat 3,500, the New Mexico Veterans’ Memorial cre-

ates a setting for events unlike any other in Albuquerque.

TO INQUIRE ABOUT RESERVING THE EVENT FACILITIES, PLEASE CALL (505) 256-2042.
