Swimming Camp

Stroke breakdowns will be done each morning while afternoon workouts will be more endurance oriented. Proper stroke technique will be taught in addition to stroke rates, drills, starts, turns and finishes as well as psychological skills training. There will be strength training with our dryland sessions. Underwater filming will be available. Individual sessions will be extra.

Campers will learn: the importance of and proper techniques for stretching; strengthening and conditioning for diving; and specific techniques for somersaulting and twisting. Additionally, students will learn how to perfect the hurdle and the art of "ripping." The camp will also cover goal setting, meet preparation and video analysis.

Residents stay in an CMU residence hall and enjoy meals provided by our campus dining service in our University Center Dining Hall. Commuter campers should be dropped off at El Pomar Natatorium each day, and picked up after the camp activities are done.

Ron Allen, Head Swimming & DivingRon Allen begins his first season as the head coach of the men’s and women’s swimming and diving programs at Colorado Mesa University. Coach Allen brings over 15 years of Division II collegiate experience, including a history of building successful programs at every level.

Allen began his collegiate coaching career at California State University Bakersfield as a volunteer assistant with the men’s swim team in 1990 and 1991. He assisted with all aspects of training, day-to-day operations and meet duties. CSU-Bakersfield won the 1991 NCAA Division II National Championship, the sixth consecutive title at CSUB.

From 1991 through 2005 Coach Allen was the Head Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving Coach at University of South Dakota. In his 15 years at the helm of the USD program he was named North Central Conference Men’s Coach of the Year four times and a two-time Women’s Coach of the Year. He coached 57 North Central Conference Champions and 79 NCAA All-Americans.

Coach Allen guided USD men’s team to eight NCAA Division II Top Ten final rankings and its first ever North Central Conference Championship in 1997 and its second title in 1999. In 1999 the men reached its highest ranking in school history finishing third in Division II. The women’s team earned its highest ranking finishing eighth in 1999. In 2000 USD boasted its first ever NCAA Individual Champion. During his tenure at University South Dakota he received the American Swimming Coaching Association (ASCA) Coaching Excellence Award 12 times, coached 18 team and 26 individual NCAA Academic All-Americans.

In 2005 through 2008 he was the Head Men’s and Women’s Swimming Coach at Morningside College (NAIA). While at Morningside the Mustangs set 28 school records, qualified 22 individuals for the NAIA National Championships and coached six NAIA Scholar Athletes. In 2007 the men finished the year ranked eighth and the women 10th at NAIA Nationals. Aside from his head coaching duties he was the Aquatics Director in charge of; daily pool operations, coordinated the swim program for over 500 children, staffing, training of lifeguards, scheduling and budgeting.

Coach Allen has been the Head Swim Coach since 2008 for the Idaho Falls (ID) Cutthroat Swim Team overseeing all aspects of training, scheduling, budgeting, and fundraising. Team members have more than tripled under his supervision and he has coached numerous nationally ranked swimmers.

Allen earned his Bachelor’s Degree from Lewis & Clark College in Psychology and Physical Education. He earned his Master’s Degree in Social Psychology of Sport from University of Oregon.

Chuck Edgar, Diving Coach In the beginning of his diving career, Chuck trained under coaching greats John Narcy, Michigan State University Diving Coach, and Dick Kimball, 9 time USA Olympic Diving Coach from the University of Michigan. In Coach Edgar’s early years as a high school coach, he helped place several divers into the finals of the Michigan’s High School State Meets. He also has Two Colorado High School State Champions to his credit.

In his 4 years at Colorado Mesa University, Coach Edgar has coached his divers to 6 Rocky Mountain Athletic Association Championship titles. He also has had 9 divers qualify and compete in the NCAA Division II Nationals. Coach Edgar’s diver Brock Martin has placed 8th, 7th, and 4th place in the Division II National Championships gaining him All- American Status three years in a row. Two of Coach Edgar’s women divers have placed 12th and 14th in the D2 National Meet as well. Brock Martin will be one of the leading contenders for the National Title in the 2014 Championships.

Coach Edgar also runs an age group dive club “Mesa Diving” where divers can train year round in preparation for competing in high school and college diving.

Brock Martin, Guest Diver & Counselor All American Brock Martin, Division II National 4th Place Finalist, and captain of the Colorado Mesa University dive team, will demonstrate 1 & 3 meter diving techniques and help work with the diving campers.
