Trustee Recruitment

Thank you for your interest in joining the trustee board of Student Hubs. This information pack has been designed to provide you with more information about us and encourage you to explore how, as a trustee, you could make a difference to our work and all those that we support.

This is an important time for Student Hubs - and an exciting phase in our development. We have grown rapidly since our foundation in 2007 and now seek to strengthen our trustee board to support our management team in the continuing growth of the charity.

We passionately believe that universities should produce not only world-class minds but also world-class citizens, and that such a culture change will help to create a just and thriving society. We hope that you might be interested in supporting us on that journey.

Should you need any additional information, or would like to discuss the role further, please do not hesitate to get in touch.

With best wishes, Adam O’Boyle, September 2013

About Student Hubs

We believe students have the power and potential to shape a better world

Vision Our vision is of a society in which every student engages with social and environmental challenges during their time at university and that this engagement develops with them, empowering them to become socially active

citizens for life.

Mission Our mission is to act as a catalyst for student involvement with social and environmental challenges, supporting a

new generation of socially engaged citizens to achieve positive change now and in the future.

Student Hubs – our Impact

The UK must develop a new generation of volunteers, social entrepreneurs, campaigners and citizens to tackle the social and environmental issues that we all face.

But not enough young people are engaging with these issues: only 50% of students think that volunteering is a mainstream activity, even if they volunteer themselves. We work to tackle this problem across our 8 local Hubs and national programmes. Over the 2012-13 academic year, we saw the following: •  1275 students have dedicated their time and energy to volunteer on a Hub project in their local community. •  Over 11,000 students attended an event or conference to learn more about social or environmental issues. •  Over 1/3rd of students that we work with had never been involved in volunteering, campaigning or social action before. •  90% of students believe that we inspire students to stay involved in social action for the rest of their lives, as well as at university.

Student Hubs was founded in autumn 2007 in response to a lack of student engagement with social and environmental issues. By promoting and facilitating volunteering, philanthropy and social entrepreneurship we mobilise students - the leaders, thinkers, consumers and decision-makers of tomorrow - to tackle pressing community needs and begin a lifelong journey of civic engagement. We have a growing network of ‘Hubs’ in universities that increase student involvement in social action and ensure these efforts are effective and sustainable. Student Hubs is both an infrastructure and a frontline delivery organisation, working across the areas of social action, the environment, international development, social enterprise and ethical careers.

Trustee Role Description

The trustees provide a non-executive oversight of all Student Hubs’ activities and lead the overall governance and strategic direction of the charity. Responsibilities include: •  To ensure that Student Hubs pursues its aims and objectives as outlined in its governing documents; •  To ensure that Student Hubs complies with charity law, company law and other relevant legislation and

regulations; •  To ensure that Student Hubs uses its assets exclusively in pursuit of its charitable objectives; •  To ensure the financial stability and effective administration of Student Hubs; •  To contribute actively to the board of trustees’ role in giving firm strategic direction to Student Hubs, setting

overall policy and defining clear goals and objectives; •  To monitor the performance of the staff team, and in particular the Executive Director; and •  To safeguard the good name and values of Student Hubs. In addition to the above statutory duties, trustees are encouraged to use any specific skills, knowledge or experience to help the charity develop its activities. This may involve: •  Providing guidance on new initiatives •  Advising or taking the lead on other issues on which the trustee has special expertise •  Increasing public awareness of the work of Student Hubs •  Supporting fundraising at a strategic and practical level

How the Board works in practice

Time commitment We currently hold trustee meetings four times a year in either Oxford or London, lasting about 3 hours each. In addition, given the complex nature of our work, we ask each of the trustees to 'champion' an area of our work. This gives trustees the opportunity to get more involved in the organisation and contribute towards the development of projects that they find particularly interesting. Term in office There is no fixed term of office, however we have found that trustees are able to contribute more to the charity if they are involved for at least two years. We also ask that trustees provide a minimum of 1 month notice if they choose to step down from the board at any time. Trustees can serve for up to 3 years before they have to stand for re-election. Structure of the board The Board of Trustees is composed of 8 individuals. At any one time, we will have representation from at least one student and one Hub alumnus. The student on the board is nominated by the Student Hubs Student Executive Committee, and represents the students on the Board of Trustees. There are no permanent sub-committees, but different working groups are sometimes established to deal with particular strategic issues. Working groups have some trustee representation and often involve other advisors and stakeholders. Examples of previous working groups have included impact measurement, website development and capital campaign fundraising.

John graduated from Oxford with a degree on Computer Science, and was involved with the Oxford Hub when it was first set up, designing it’s first website back in 2007. He has been on the Trustee Board for the last 3 years, both bringing an alumni perspective, and also continuing his involvement with IT. Things have changed a lot since 2007, so Jonn’s perspective is really helpful in keeping us on track if we ever lose sight of the original vision. On IT matters, John has provided ongoing advice throughout this time, checking the team’s proposals for a new website and letting us know of the latest innovations at Google, where he works, so that we can be a really efficient team. When we decided to build our website in house, John joined a working group of staff and volunteers to steer the plans and ensure that the result was a successful one, supporting the team to learn and develop.

Trustee Case Studies

JOHN MELLOR TRIS LUMLEY

Tris leads strategy, development and fundraising at New Philanthropy Capital. He has been on the board since we registered as a charity. Throughout all our years of growth, Tris has provided advice on our monitoring and evaluation work as well as general mentoring and leadership to our relatively young senior team. When we decided to substitute our Annual Review for our first organisation-wide Impact Report for the academic year 2012-13, he provided support and direction to our Research Manager, ensuring that the report followed best practice. He also provides valuable advice and expertise in overseeing the governance of the charity generally.
