Highlights from 2013 at United Way of Midland, TXTRANSCRIPT
• CampaignChairRyanHamiltonandhisteamraisedarecord$3,505,937forthe2012-2013campaign.ThesefundsbenefitUnitedWayofMidland’s(UWM)programs,initiativesandcommunitygrants.
• UWMhosteditsinauguralRunaKforUnitedWayonApril6,2013.The5Kand10Kracedrew119participants.Inaddition,thegenerosityofsponsorsenabledustoraise$12,877.
• TheworkoftheTransitionalHousingSteeringCommitteecontinuedthroughout2013.TheFamilyPromiseofMidlandandUWMcollaboration,FamiliesForward,becamearealityinDecember,whenaduplexwasacquiredandthefirstfamilymovedintoaunit.ThisfamilywasabletoenjoyChristmasintheirtemporarynewhome.Groundwillbebrokenlaterthisspringfortheconstructionoftwomoreduplexes.
• DuringtheSummerof2013UWMpartneredwithCasadeAmigostopilotClubRead.ClubReadisaprogramtopreventsummerreadinglossinlowincomechildren.72childreninsecondthroughseventhgradereceivedareadingkit,consistingoffivebookstokeepandajournal.UWMismonitoringthereadinggradesofthesestudentsandpreliminaryreportsshowthemajorityimprovedtheirreadinggrade.
• InAugustaWomen’sLeadershipCouncil(WLC)SteeringCommitteewasformed.Laterin2013,40chartermemberswererecruitedanddonatedmorethan$40,000towardsaReadytoReadinitiative.ReadytoReadisdesignedtoenhanceearlygradeliteracy.InFebruary,WLCgaveliteracykitsto88Pre-KandHeadStartstudentsatCrockettElementary.Volunteersreadtothestudentseveryotherweekandpresentthemwithabookeachtime.Wewillmonitorthereadingandliteracyprogressmadebythesechildrenthroughthethirdgrade.EllenHouseservesasChairandJayneKrawietzasViceChair.
• The12thAnnualXTOandConchoResourcesBustin’ClayforUnitedWaywasanothergreatsuccess.Theeventkickedoffthe2013-2014UnitedWaycampaignbyraising$182,000,thankstothegenerosityofsponsorsandparticipants.
• InJanuary2014,UWMsponsoreditssecondseasonofUSAFitMidland.The12-weektrainingprogrampreparedabout40walkersandrunnersalongwith10volunteercoaches,forthesecondannualRunaKforUnitedWay.
