As for 2011 the economy of the North East during 2012 has again proved to be one of the fewshining lights in a period of relative economic gloom. The energy sector has again proved to bevery strong and following the unwelcome tax rise of 2011 it is encouraging to note a muchimproved understanding by the UK Government of its significance to the UK economy. The regionis of course not immune from the effects of a generally flat lining economy, with the most obviousexample being that of housing where a lack finance and mortgage availability, particularly for firsttime buyers, continues to be a hindrance to recovery in the construction sector and also tobusiness generally in terms of attracting much needed new people into the region to work.Following the Chancellor’s autumn statement, which delivered additional capital funding, it isimportant that the Scottish Government delivers speedy investment in housing and key transportinfrastructure to help boost the wider economy.

Transport continues to be of major concern to SCDI members in the region and SCDI has lobbiedregularly during 2012 for the protection and enhancement of air and rail links between the regionand London. The continued pressure on Heathrow landing slots and the delays to the award ofnew East and West Coast rail franchises ensure that this will remain a focus for our policy workduring 2013. It is of course a great relief and welcome boost to the North East that the variouslegal challenges to the Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route (AWPR) during 2012 have all beendismissed and that real progress can now be made on this critical piece of infrastructure. We lookforward to the Scottish Government and Local Authorities progressing this project as speedily aspossible.

Finally, SCDI would like to thank its members in the North East and beyond for their strongsupport in 2012 and of course we look forward to this continuing during 2013. If you are interestedin learning more about SCDI please contact Ian Armstrong, Regional Director,[email protected] or Tel: 01224 263380.

SCDI IN THE NORTH EAST

SCDI in its present form was created in 1946 by the amalgamation of the Scottish DevelopmentCouncil (1931) and the Scottish Council on Industry (1942). It is 48 years since a presence wasfirst established in the North East through the creation of an Advisory Board in 1965. Today itssuccessor body, the North East Committee, continues to act as the focus for SCDI’s work in theregion along with our full time office in the city of Aberdeen.

SCDI’s remit is broad and covers policy research and lobbying; networking events for members;the encouragement of young people into technology based careers via our flourishing YoungEngineers and Science Clubs (YESC) and also business support services such as the organisationof trade missions and information provision. The core purpose of SCDI is to influence and inspiregovernment and key stakeholders to create sustainable economic prosperity for Scotland, anambition as relevant today as it was when SCDI was established in 1931.

Since our 2012 Lecture the policy debate in Scotland has been increasingly influenced by theconstitutional debate and whether independence would be positive or negative for the Scottisheconomy. With at least 18 months to go until the referendum we can expect this process tocontinue and intensify during 2013. SCDI intends to facilitate and inform the discussion on keyeconomic aspects of the debate over this period and has established three working groups led byBoard members to explore the topics of Energy, Fiscal and Europe/International. The first stage ofthis process will be to identify key issues which can be shared widely with the membership forfurther discussion and inputs via round table sessions and other events. Members will be keptinformed and involved in this during the course of the year.
