VIC SCHAEFER HEAD COACHA veteran coach of 29 seasons, Schaefer embarks on his second season

as head coach of the Bulldogs looking to take the next step in his quest of build-ing a championship program.

Schaefer began laying the pieces of a championship foundation last sea-son in Starkville. He led the Bulldogs to SEC wins against Ole Miss, Alabama, Arkansas and Missouri before capping the year with a thrilling upset of No. 11 Georgia. Under his watch, Martha Alwal earned All-SEC honors and won the Gillom Trophy as a sophomore after leading the SEC in double-doubles, re-bounding and blocked shots. He also added more stellar pieces to the Bulldog

program as his first recruiting class rated as one of the best in program history.Building a championship program is something he has done at every stop in his coaching career,

including his previous stops at Arkansas and Texas A&M. He has helped construct winners by teaching intense, high-pressure defense, and compiling some of the nation’s top-ranked recruiting classes.

In those 15 seasons in Fayetteville and College Station, Schaefer earned the moniker the “Secretary of Defense” as his defenses helped those squads to the postseason all but once (his first season at Texas A&M) while averaging 22 wins a year.

Under the guidance of one of the most-respective teachers of defense in the nation, Arkansas and Texas A&M to 11 NCAA Tournament appearances. In his first season in Fayetteville, the Razorbacks advanced to the Final Four before making three more trips to the second round. With his alma mater, he won a national championship while helping the program to a pair of Sweet 16 appearances, an Elite Eight showing, two trips to the second round and a first-round berth.

In his nine years as associate head coach to friend and mentor Gary Blair at Texas A&M, his teams consistently were atop the Big 12 in turnovers caused, steals, turnover margin and assist-to-turnover ratio.

In 2011, his smothering defense topped the nation in turnover margin en route to guiding the Aggies to the NCAA national championship in the program’s first trip to the Women’s Final Four. That squad also earned Texas A&M’s first No. 1 national ranking while finishing the season with a 33-5 record, the most wins in school history.

The following season, his final Texas A&M squad finished first in the Big 12 in turnover margin en route to advancing to a fifth-straight conference tournament title game and the Sweet 16 in the team’s seventh-consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance.

Schaefer was also part of Texas A&M squads that won two Big 12 Tournament titles (2010 & 2008) and the conference regular season title in 2007. In addition to the 2011 national championship, Schaefer helped coach the Aggies to the 2009 Sweet 16 and the 2008 Elite Eight.

Not only has Schaefer proven himself as one of the nation’s premier defensive coaches, but he has also been one of the top recruiters in women’s basketball, helping ink nine Top 20 recruiting classes dur-ing his tenures at Texas A&M and Arkansas. His strong reputation as a coach and recruiter earned him BasketballScoop.com’s 2009 Assistant Coach of the Year.

While at Texas A&M, he played an integral role in the Aggies finishing among the country’s Top 10 signing classes four-straight years. His final class with the Aggies rated as the nation’s No. 2 signing class, and he helped land the nation’s top class during the 2011 national championship run. In addition to 2012’s No. 2 class and 2011’s top-rated class, the Aggies’ 2010 signing class ranked No. 5 nationally and tops in the Big 12. A year earlier, he helped ink the Big 12’s No. 2 class and the sixth-best in the country.

In 2007, Schaefer earned the opportunity to coach the United States William Jones Cup Team, lead-ing that squad to a bronze medal in Taipei, Taiwan. He also joined with Athletes in Action to coach some of the top women’s college players in the nation. The only associate head coach to be named head coach of the USA Jones Cup Team, Schaefer guided Team USA to a 4-2 record in pool play with wins against Japan, New Zealand, Korea and Chinese Taipei.

The opportunity to earn international coaching experience came a year after Schaefer helped lead the 2005-06 Aggies to the first round of the NCAA Tournament. That season saw the program finish third in the Big 12, its highest finish at the time, and sign the Aggies’ first McDonald’s All-American.

The 2004-05 season saw Texas A&M advance to the WNIT Elite Eight, the first postseason appear-ance under Blair and Schaefer. That season, Schaefer helped ink the nation’s 20th-best signing class, a year after their initial class rated No. 27 in the country.

Schaefer had the opportunity to accompany Blair to his alma mater following a six-year stint as as-sociate head coach at Arkansas from 1997-2003. During that run, he helped the Razorbacks to four NCAA Tournament appearances, including a Final Four berth in his inaugural season. The following year, Arkan-sas went on to claim the WNIT national championship. While in Fayetteville, he helped tutor Shameka Christon, who would go on to earn SEC Player of the Year and First Team All-SEC honors.

Schaefer, a Houston, Texas, native, went to Arkansas after serving as head women’s coach at Sam Houston State from 1990-97. In his next-to-last season there, he was tabbed the Southland Conference Coach of the Year after leading the Bearkats to their most wins in a decade (18). At SHS, he tutored either the SLC’s Freshman or Newcomer of the Year in three of his final four seasons. In his first year at the school (1990-91), he coached Sierena Autman to Southland Conference Player of the Year accolades.

Schaefer took the reigns of the women’s program after assisting the SHS men’s team from 1987-89 between stints as the assistant boys basketball coach and head tennis coach at Houston’s Milby High School. As a player, Schaefer was an all-state performer at Houston Lutheran High School before going on to play two seasons at Alvin Community College.

Schaefer is a dedicated family man. He is married to the former Holly Davis, who played basketball at Arkansas State and later served as an assistant coach at UT Arlington. The couple has 18-year-old twins, Blair Nicole and Charles Logan.

SETTING THE SCENE► Mississippi State wraps a three-game homestand Saturday night as it hosts South-ern Mississippi in the 40th meeting between the two teams.

► The contest will be the 20th meeting in Starkville

► MSU comes into the game 9-1 overall following a 75-49 home victory against Ala-bama State on Dec. 7.

► The Golden Eagles come to Starkville 6-1 after winning their home tournament with victories against Mississippi Valley State (76-61) and Florida A&M (96-69) Nov. 29-30. USM’s game at Central Arkansas last Saturday was cancelled by winter weather that hit the area.

LOOKING AT THE OPPOSITION► The Golden Eagles are hitting the road for the second time this season. Their first road contest was their lone setback, a 74-58 loss at Hampton on Nov. 16.

► Southern Miss is paced by junior newcomer Tamara Jones’ 19.0 points per game. She also tops the squad on the boards, pulling down 8.3 rebounds per contest.

► Jamierra Faulkner and Brittany Dinkins are averaging 15.7 and 12.4 points per con-test, respectively. Faulkner tops the nation with 10.6 assists per game.

LOOKING AT THE IN-STATE SERIES► Southern Mississippi leads the overall series 22-17 after claiming a 61-59 victory in Hattiesburg last season on an Ance Celmina bucket with 21 seconds left to play.

► The setback snapped a four-game win streak for the Bulldogs in the series. State has won five of the last seven meetings.

► State is 51-4 (.927) in home pre-SEC action since the 2007-08 cam-paign.

► MSU’s .717 free-throw percentage rates third in the SEC.

► The Bulldogs have gone to the line 20 or more times in all but one game, and have 30-plus attempts in seven contests.

► State went to the line 44 times against Louisiana-Lafayette on Dec. 4, the most since the Bulldogs tied a school record with 47 attempts against Alabama State on Dec. 1, 1998. The Dawgs made 32 of their chances against the Ragin’ Cajuns, the most since the 2008-09 squad made 36 against Northwestern State on Nov. 23.

DAWG-TOUGH DEFENSE► State held Alabama State to 26.2 percent from the field, the second-lowest tally allowed this season behind a 24.5-percent clip against Jackson State on Nov. 13. MSU has held foes to under 27 percent from the floor for two-straight games after limiting Louisiana-Lafayette to 26.6 percent on Dec. 4.

► The Dawgs are keeping foes to 32.3 percent from the field this season, the second-best tally in the SEC and 11th in the nation this week.

► State is holding foes to 53.2 ppg, the fourth-lowest mark in the SEC and No. 10 in Division I.

STATE FORCES THE MISTAKES► State’s stellar scoring defense can be attributed to forcing the opponent to turn the basketball over an SEC-most 261 times. MSU’s +10.5 turnover margin is first in the SEC and entered the week fourth nationally.

► Saturday’s game will be a battle of two of the nation’s best when it comes to turnover margin, as USM rates 15th at +7.3.

► The Dawgs have won the turnover battle in all 10 games this season, something the squad only did 11 times a year ago. State has forced 20 or more turnovers in nine of those contests.

► State forced a school-record 45 against New Orleans and 34 more the fol-lowing contest against Tennessee Tech. Opponents averaged 19.3 turnovers per game against the Bulldogs in the three Gulf Coast Showcase games.

SWIPING THE BASKETBALL► State claimed a season second-most 15 steals against the Lady Hornets last Saturday. MSU is second in the SEC and 13th nationally with 12.3 steals per contest.

► Against UNO, the Bulldogs tallied 30 steals, the second-most in school history behind 32 against Nicholls State in 2008. The 30 steals are tied for fifth-most in SEC single-game history.

► Junior Savannah Carter is third in the SEC and No. 29 nationally with 2.9 steals per contest.

BULLDOGS GROWING ON OFFENSE► In addition to solid defense, Mississippi State has shown growth on the of-fensive end in year two under Schaefer. The Bulldogs are averaging an SEC sixth-most 77.6 points per game. The team was scoring at a 59.0 per-game clip at the same point last season.

► This year’s squad has scored 70 or more points in eight games, some-thing last year’s squad did five times.

► From Nov. 13-Nov. 26, MSU went four-straight games with 80-plus points, a first for the Bulldogs since the opening four games of the 2009-10 season.

BALANCING THE SCORING► Mississippi State has done a good job balancing the scoring between the two halves this season.

► State is averaging 38.5 points per game in the first half this season, and 39.1 in the final 20 minutes. 1st Half 2nd HalfPoints 38.5 39.1FG Percentage .441 .4143-Point FG Percentage .378 .257FT Percentage .662 .764Rebounds 21.7 20.9Assists 83 82 Turnovers 96 60Blocks 22 27Steals 58 65

MSU BREAKS CENTURY MARK► In a 111-38 win against New Orleans on Nov. 17, MSU went over the cen-tury mark for the first time since Nov. 13, 2010 (106-48 W vs. Arkansas-Pine Bluff). The 111 points tied for third-most in school history, and the most since a 115-60 victory against Belhaven on Nov. 30, 1993.

► The 73-point margin of victory is second only to the 82-point differential the 1985-86 team claimed in a 117-35 win against Judson College (2/24/86).

MSU ADVANCES TO GULF COAST SHOWCASE TITLE GAME► Mississippi State played for a regular-season tournament championship for the first time since the 2010-11 squad fell to host Lehigh at the Christmas City Classic in Bethlehem, Pa.

► In a three-game tournament format, it was the first title game appearance since the 1997 Kona Classic.

STATE LIMITS JMU’S PRESEASON CAA POY PICK► Mississippi State held James Madison’s Kirby Burkholder, the preseason pick for CAA Player of the Year, to a season-low nine points. It was the first time she failed to reach double figures in nine games dating back to last season.

KATIA LEADING THE DAWGS► May has been stellar at the point this season, dishing out 68 assists for a 6.8 average that is second in the SEC and 12th nationally.

► She dished a career-best 13 assists in a Nov. 21 win against Tennessee Tech, the second-most in MSU single-game school history behind the 17 set by Polly Branch against Judson College in 1986.

► She bettered her previous high of 11 set in the season opener at Houston and matched against New Orleans on Nov. 17.

► May has a 3.24 assist/turnover ratio that is second in the league and 18th nationally.

► Saturday’s game will be two of the nation’s leaders in assists. May rates 12th, while USM’s Jamierra Faulkner is first with 10.6 per game.

DILLINGHAM SPARKING THE BULLDOGS► Freshman Dominique Dillingham’s 13 points against Alabama State followed a career-best 19 points against Louisiana-Lafayette.

► In the last two games, Dillingham leads the Bulldogs with a 16.0 scoring aver-age, a .550 shooting percentage, 3.5 offensive rebounds and 4.5 steals.

► This season, Dillingham is third on the squad in scoring (10.3 ppg), and her 30 offensive boards are two back of Martha Alwal for tops on the team. The Spring, Texas, native’s 3.0 offensive boards per game is tied for eighth in the SEC and the most among league freshmen.

► Dillingham’s intense play has created free-throw opportunities for the rookie. Her 54 free-throw attempts are a team high, and her 39 made freebies are tied for second-most among the Bulldogs.

► Her 2.2 steals per game is 12th overall in the SEC, second among freshmen.

MARTHA ALWAL — MSU’S SWATS QUEEN► Martha Alwal became Mississippi State’s career blocks record holder with three swats against Middle Tennessee in the Dec. 1 Gulf Coast Showcase champion-ship game. Alwal broke the previous high of 180 set by Chanel Mokango in the 2009 and 2010 seasons.

► Alwal blocked a season-high five shots against Alabama State to increase her record tally to 189. She is sixth among active NCAA Division I players and first out of current SEC players.

► Her 2.9 blocks per game this season is 14th in the nation and first in the SEC. It leads an MSU squad that is fourth in the SEC and 35th nationally with 4.9 per game.

DOUBLE-DOUBLE ALWAL► Martha Alwal collected her second double-double of the year against Louisiana-Lafayette, scoring 14 points and grabbing 14 rebounds. Alwal notched her first of the season against Tennessee Tech with 17 points and 10 boards.

► Alwal has 21-career double-doubles, the second-most among active SEC play-ers and two back of the 23 claimed by Kentucky’s Denesha Stallworth.

MARTHA CONTRIBUTES ON OFFENSE TOO► Although she has made her mark as a defender, Alwal has also contributed on offense, tallying double digits in eight of the team’s 10 games this season. She scored a career-high 25 points against Grand Canyon Nov. 29 and leads the Bull-dogs with a 14.8 scoring average.

MARTHA EARNS GCS ALL-TOURNEY NOD► Martha Alwal was named to the Gulf Coast Showcase All-Tournament Team after averaging 16.7 points, 7.3 rebounds and 3.3 blocks in the three games.

► Prior to the season, the Worthington, Minn., native claimed Second Team Pre-season All-SEC honors from the SEC coaches.

► It followed a stellar sophomore year that saw her claim Second Team All-SEC accolades and SEC All-Defensive Team honors. She was also named the Gillom Trophy winner as Mississippi’s top female basketball player.

GRANT HAS THE SCORER’S TOUCH► Kendra Grant has scored double figures in eight of the team’s 10 games this season, including matching a career high with 23 points against New Orleans on Nov. 17. Grant added a game-high 16 points against Alabama State last Saturday, giving her double figures in 10 of her last 13 games dating back to last season. She tops the returning Bulldogs with 38-career games in double digits.

► The Richland, Miss., native, who has started all 70 games in her career, passed 700-career points her last time out after claiming No. 600 earlier this season.

STATE INKS HISTORIC CLASS► Mississippi State inked five standouts to the 18th-ranked recruiting class in the country, including Mississippi’s reigning Miss Basketball Victoria Viv-ians, who is rated as high as No. 6 nationally, and another Dandy Dozen selection in guard Blair Schaefer, who is a four-star recruit according to Pre-mier Girls Basketball Report and the 55th-rated guard by ESPN/HoopGurlz.

► The tandem joins Florida’s LaKaris Salter, the 89th player in the nation and No. 18 forward; Texas native Kayla Nevitt, the ninth-rated player in Texas and No. 87 overall; and Alabama’s Morgan William, the No. 24 point guard in the nation.

2013-14 GAME RECAPS

Mississippi State won its 10th straight season opener with a hard-earned 76-68 win over Houston in women’s basketball action Friday night at Hofheinz Pavilion.

Freshman Breanna Richardson led the MSU offensive attack with 14 points. Kendra Grant added 13 points, including 11 in the second half, as MSU won while playing a season opener on the road for the first time since 2003.

Junior Savannah Carter added 12 points in her Maroon and White debut and fell one rebound shy of collecting a double-double. Sherise Williams added 11 points and nine bounds as well. Martha Alwal added 10 points and seven rebounds, despite fouling out in the early stages of the second half.

The Bulldogs finished with a plus-10 rebounding advantage and never trailed after a 14-0 run erased an early 3-2 lead by the hosts. Houston answered with a 9-0 run only to see MSU push the lead back to double digits with six points of its own. Down 22-11, the Cougars turned up the defensive pressure and benefited from foul issues for the Bulldogs to close within 31-29 at the intermission.

Like they did in the opening half, the Bulldogs started the second stanza with a very strong push. MSU opened the half with a 14-3 run and ran the lead to 45-32 with 16:19 left.

2013-14 GAME RECAPS

A dominating first-half performance helped lift the Mississippi State women’s basketball team to an 81-63 victory over Savannah State Tuesday night in Humphrey Coliseum.

The Bulldogs won all four games on the homestand. MSU’s 5-0 start is the program’s best since the 2008-09 squad won its first 11 games.

MSU shot 51.7 percent from the field in the opening half and led 50-33 at halftime. Foul trouble and sloppy play made the Bulldogs attempt at separation hard to come by in the second half of play.

The Bulldogs used a 10-0 run to build a double-digit lead as the game approached the midway mark of the first half. A jumper by Dominique Dillingham ran the lead to 20-9 with 10:46 left in the half.

Dillingham finished the contest with 18 points, five rebounds and three assists in 25 minutes of play. Two free throws by Grant ran the lead to 27-11 with 9:39 left before halftime. With a total of 36 fouls

called in the opening half, each team had ample foul shot opportunities. The lead grew to 19 at 38-19 on an old-fashioned 3-point play by Dillingham.

Grant had 12 of her 19 points in the first half as the Bulldogs led 50-33 at the intermission.

A dominating first-half performance lifted Mississippi State past Alabama State 75-49.In the opening half, the Bulldogs shot 50 percent from the floor and quickly sprinted to 39-12 lead at the

intermission. However, in the second half, the Bulldogs continued their recent struggles of putting a game away and were actually outscored by a single point in the final stanza.

With strong shooting early and a suffocating defense, MSU scored the first 11 points of the game. A 3-pointer and follow-up layup by Kendra Grant capped the run. The Bulldogs followed with a 9-0 run to build a 20-2 advantage with 12:39 left before halftime.

The lead grew to 24 at 29-5 on a jumper by Ketara Chapel with 5:52 left before halftime. In the opening half, the Bulldogs held the Lady Hornets to four total field goals and 13.3 percent shooting

from the field. MSU forced 18 of Alabama State’s 28 turnovers in the opening half.In the second half, the Lady Hornets shot 38.7 percent from the field and remained in the contest.Another basket by Grant ran the lead to a game’s best 29 points at 54-25 with 11:05 left in the contest.

Alabama State followed with one final run but got no closer than 22 points at 56-34 about three minutes later.
