Hymn: TiS 201 1. King of glory, King of peace, I will love thee; and, that love may never cease, I will move thee. Thou hast granted my request, thou hast heard me; thou didst note my working breast, thou hast spared me.

2. Wherefore with my utmost art I will sing thee, and the cream of all my heart I will bring thee. Though my sins against me cried, thou didst clear me; and alone, when they replied, thou didst hear me.

3. Seven whole days, not one in seven, I will praise thee; in my heart, though not in heaven, I can raise thee. Small it is, in this poor sort to enrol thee: ev’n eternity’s too short to extol thee.

George Herbert 1593–1633

Invocation: Blessed be God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Blessed be God's kingdom, now and for ever.

Greeting: The Lord be with you. And also with you.

Sentence: Blessed are those whose way is blameless, who walk in the law of the Lord. Psalm 119.1

Prayer of Preparation: As we gather as God's people let us pray together: Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name, through Christ our Lord. Amen. The Summary of the Commandments: ‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ Jesus said: ‘This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: you shall love your neighbour as yourself.’ Kyrie eleison (Dudman Setting)

The Confession

Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, confident in God's forgiveness. Merciful God, our maker and our judge,

we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, and in what we have failed to do: we have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves; we repent, and are sorry for all our sins. Father, forgive us. Strengthen us to love and obey you in newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Absolution (Celebrant)

Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to him in faith: pardon you and set you free from all your sins, strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayer of the Day Almighty God, you gave the law to guide our lives: grant that we may never shrink from your commandments, but, as we are taught by your Spirit, may fulfil your law in perfect love; through Christ our Lord and Master, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God now and for ever. Amen. THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD

Readings from 'New Revised Standard Version' (NRSV) First Reading: Sirach 15.15-20 15 If you choose, you can keep the commandments, and to act faithfully is a matter of your own choice. 16 He has placed before you fire and water; stretch out your hand for whichever you choose. 17 Before each person are life and death, and whichever one chooses will be given. 18 For great is the wisdom of the Lord; he is mighty in power and sees everything; 19 his eyes are on those who fear him, and he knows every human action. 20 He has not commanded anyone to be wicked, and he has not given anyone permission to sin. Response: Hear the word of the Lord,

THANKS BE TO GOD

Psalm 119.1-8 1 Blessed are those whose way is blameless:

who walk in the law of the Lord. 2 Blessed are those who keep his commands:

and seek him with their whole heart; 3 Those who do no wrong:

but walk in the ways of our God. 4 For you, Lord, have commanded us:

to persevere in all your precepts. 5 If only my ways were unerring:

towards the keeping of your statutes! 6 Then I should not be ashamed:

when I looked on all your commandments. 7 I will praise you with sincerity of heart:

as I learn your righteous judgements. 8 I will keep your statutes:

O forsake me not utterly. Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 3.1-9 1 And so, brothers and sisters, I could not speak to you as spiritual people, but rather as people of the flesh, as infants in Christ. 2 I fed you with milk, not solid food, for you were not ready for solid food. Even now you are still not ready, 3 for you are still of the flesh. For as long as there is jealousy and quarrelling among you, are you not of the flesh, and behaving according to human inclinations? 4 For when one says, ‘I belong to Paul’, and another, ‘I belong to Apollos’, are you not merely human? 5 What then is Apollos? What is Paul? Servants through whom you came to believe, as the Lord assigned to each. 6 I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth. 7 So neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth. 8 The one who plants and the one who waters have a common purpose, and each will receive wages according to the labour of each. 9 For we are God’s servants, working together; you are God’s field, God’s building. Response: Hear the word of the Lord,

THANKS BE TO GOD

Gradual Hymn: TiS 349

1. In the cross of Christ I glory, towering o’er the wrecks of time; all the light of sacred story gathers round its head sublime.

2. Through the cross, Christ’s love empowers us worldliness and self deny; by his Spirit it inspires us him, through love, to glorify.

3. When the woes of life o’ertake us, hopes deceive and fears annoy, never shall the cross forsake us, from it shines our peace and joy.

4. Bane and blessing, pain and pleasure, by the cross are sanctified; peace is there that knows no measure, joys that through all time abide.

5. In the cross of Christ I glory, towering o’er the wrecks of time; all the light of sacred story gathers round its head sublime.

John Bowring 1792–1872 alt. v.2 Charles Louis Fouvy 1928–

We stand for the reading of the Holy Gospel as a sign of respect as we greet our Lord who is present in His Holy Word.

The Lord be with you AND ALSO WITH YOU The gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Saint Matthew chapter 5 beginning at the 21st verse.

GLORY TO YOU, LORD JESUS CHRIST. 21 ‘You have heard that it was said to those of ancient times, “You shall not murder”; and “whoever murders shall be liable to judgement.”22 But I say to you that if you are angry with a brother or sister, you will be liable to judgement; and if you insult a brother or sister, you will be liable to the council; and if you say, “You fool”, you will be liable to the hell of fire. 23 So when you are offering your gift at the altar, if you remember that your brother or sister has something against you, 24 leave your gift there before the altar and go; first be reconciled to your brother or sister, and then come and offer your gift. 25 Come to terms quickly with your accuser while you are on the way to court with him, or your accuser may hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the guard, and you will be thrown into prison. 26 Truly I tell you, you will never get out until you have paid the last penny. 27 ‘You have heard that it was said, “You shall not commit adultery.” 28 But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart. 29 If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away; it is better for you to lose one of your members than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. 30 And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away; it is better for you to lose one of your members than for your whole body to go into hell. 31 ‘It was also said, “Whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce.” 32 But I say to you that anyone who divorces his wife, except on the ground of unchastity, causes her to commit adultery; and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery. 33 ‘Again, you have heard that it was said to those of ancient times, “You shall not swear falsely, but carry out the vows you have made to the Lord.” 34 But I say to you, Do not swear at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God, 35 or by the earth, for it is his footstool, or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. 36 And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black. 37 Let your word be “Yes, Yes” or “No, No”; anything more than this comes from the evil one. Gospel Response: This is the gospel of the Lord,

PRAISE TO YOU, LORD JESUS CHRIST.

SERMON - (copy of sermon available at back of church)

The Nicene Creed

Let us together affirm the faith of the Church. We believe in one God, the Father, the almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

THE GREETING OF PEACE (all stand)

{Celebrant} We are the body of Christ. His Spirit is with us. The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you.

Offertory Hymn: TiS 598

1. Dear Father, Lord of humankind, forgive our foolish ways; reclothe us in our rightful mind: in purer lives thy service find, in deeper reverence, praise. in deeper reverence, praise.

2. In simple trust like theirs who heard, beside the Syrian sea, the gracious calling of the Lord, let us, like them, without a word rise up and follow thee, rise up and follow thee.

3. O sabbath rest by Galilee! O calm of hills above, where Jesus knelt to share with thee the silence of eternity, interpreted by love, interpreted by love!

4. Drop thy still dews of quietness, till all our strivings cease; take from our souls the strain and stress, and let our ordered lives confess the beauty of thy peace, the beauty of thy peace.

5. Breathe through the heats of our desire thy coolness and thy balm; let sense be dumb, let flesh retire; speak through the earthquake, wind, and fire, O still small voice of calm, O still small voice of calm.

John Greenleaf Whittier 1807–92 alt.

Offertory Prayer: Blessed are you, Lord, God of all creation. Through your goodness we have these gifts to share. Accept and use our offerings for your glory and for the service of your kingdom. BLESSED BE GOD FOR EVER.

Final Hymn: TiS 545

1. Shout for joy! The Lord has let us feast; Heaven’s own fare has fed the last and least; Christ’s own peace is shared again on earth; God the Spirit fills us with new worth.

2. No more doubting, no more senseless dread: God’s good self has graced our wine and bread; all the wonder heaven has kept in store. now is ours to keep for evermore.

3. Celebrate with saints who dine on high, witnesses that love can never die. ‘Hallelujah!’— thus their voices ring: nothing less in gratitude we bring.

4. Praise the Maker, praise the Maker’s Son, praise the Spirit — three yet ever one; praise the God whose food and friends avow heav’n starts here! The kingdom beckons now!
