Academic System for the Courses
Support Services through Study Centres:StudyCentresarebeingsetupalloverthecountryandabroadtoprovidethecandidatesaplatformtointeractwithcounselors,othercandidatesandforuseofthelibrary.Candidates would be getting personal attention at these centres in addition to the hands-on-training oncomputersatthesecentres.
Programme Delivery:A multi-form of instruction has been adopted, comprising of:
a) Print material:Studymaterialforallsubjects,whicharesuppliedintheformofbooks
b) Counseling Sessions:WillbeheldatStudyCentres,tosuittheconvenienceofcandidates.
c) Practical Sessions:WillalsobeheldattheStudyCentres
d) Assignments:Forassessment,evaluationandforfeedbackofcomprehensionofstudymaterial.
e) Project work: To enable the candidate to gain an insight into independentworking on a practicalproject.
Credit System:TheUniversityfollowsthe‘CreditSystem’foritsUndergraduateandPostgraduateProgrammes.Eachcreditentailsapproximately30hoursofstudycomprisingofallactivities.Thus,a3-creditcourseinvolves90studyhours.Thishelpsthecandidatestounderstandtheacademiceffortsonehastoputinsuitablytocompletethecourse.
Face to Face Programme: Experiments, practical, labs workshop and intensive Programmes such asEngineeringarenot conducive throughdistanceeducationmode, hence face to facemode is introducedwhereastudenthasanopportunity tocomplete the theorycontentsof thesubjects in theclass roomsoftheStudyCentres throughcompetent facultiesduring flexihoursor inpart timemodeandpractical, labs,experimentsandworkshopassignmentsarecompletedinanInstitutionhavingtherequiredInfrastructureForExample–AnAICTEapprovedEngineeringCollegeoranEngineeringPolytechnicwithwhomthelocalStudyCentrehasanarrangementforthecompletionofpracticalcontent.Instructional System: Themethodology of instruction in thisOpenUniversity is different from that of theconventionalUniversities.TheOpenUniversitysystemismorelearner-oriented,somuchso,thecandidatehastobeinvariablyanactiveparticipantintheteaching-learningprocess.TheUniversityfollowsamulti-channelapproachforinstructionssuitablycomprisingofthefollowing:

Tostartwith,thecourseswillbedeliveredonInternet,conventionaldistanceeducationmodeandfacetofacemode.Induecourse,itwillshiftmoreandmoretowardsonlineinteractionbetweenteacherandthetaught.

Skillanddexteritywillbeinculcatedrightfromthebeginningthoughinteractivecomputerapplications.Self Instructional Material: Printed materials are the primary form of instructional materials. These aresuppliedtothecandidatesintheformofbooklets.Therefore,candidateshavetorelymainlyupontheprintedmaterials,whicharesenttothemthroughtheStudyCentres.Theprintedmaterialswouldbesufficienttotheextentofabout70%to75%towriteanyassignmentandpreparefortheterm-endexaminations.However,candidatesarestronglyadvisedtorefertoothersourcesandtexts,suggestedundereachunitinordertogetacomprehensiveknowledgeofthesubjectmatter.
Counseling Sessions: In distance education, face-to-face contact between the learners and their tutors/counselorsisrelativelylessandthereforecounselingisanimportantactivity.Thepurposeofsuchacontactistoanswersomeofthequestionsandclarifydoubts,whichmaynotbepossiblethroughanyothermeansofcommunication.ThereareexperiencedacademiccounselorsattheStudyCentrestoprovidecounselingandguidanceinthecoursesthatarechosenforstudy.ThecandidatewillbeinformedoftheProgrammescheduledetailsbytheStudyCentreCoordinators.
It should be noted that the counseling sessions would be very different from the classroom teaching orlectures.Counselingdoesnotmeandeliveringlecturesasinconventionalteaching.CounselorswilltrytohelpovercomeacademicdifficultieswhichonemayfacewhilegoingthroughtheProgrammes.Inthesesessionsonemusttrytoresolvesubjectbaseddifficultiesandanyotherrelatedproblems.
Beforethecandidateattendsthecounselingsession,he/sheshouldgothroughthecoursematerialandmakenotesofthepointstobediscussed.Unlesstheunitsaregonethrough,theremaynotbemuchtodiscuss.TheCoordinatorsoftherespectiveStudyCentrewillmakethedetailscheduleofthecounselingsessionknowntothecandidates.Usually,atleast10%ofthecredithourswillbeearmarkedforthecounselingsession.
Assignments:Assignmentsareanintegralpartofdistancelearning.Themainpurposeofassignmentsistotest thecandidate’scomprehensionof the learningmaterials received fromtheUniversityandalso tohelpbettercomprehensionthecoursesbyprovidingfeedback.Theinformationgivenintheprintedcoursematerialsshouldbesufficientforansweringtheassignments.However,thecandidatemayhavetorefertootherbooksand referencesgiven in the coursematerial to have a comprehensive knowledgeof the subject. But theassignmentsaregenerallydesigned insuchawayas tohelp toconcentratemainlyon theprintedcoursematerialwithafleetingtouchtootherreferences.Thecandidatemayalsonotethefollowingpoints:
a) Itiscompulsorytosubmittheassignmentsandwillnotbeallowedtoappearfortheterm-endexaminationofacourseifonedoesnotsubmitthespecifiednumberofassignmentsinrespectivecoursesontime.
b) AllassignmentsshouldbesubmittedtotherespectiveStudyCentresc) Theassignmentresponsesshouldbecompleteinallrespects.Beforesubmissionthecandidateshould
ensurethatonehasansweredallthequestionsintheassignments.Incompleteanswersheetswillfetchpoorgrades/marks.
d) TheStudyCentrehastherighttorejecttheassignmentsreceivedafterduedate.Hence,thecandidateisadvisedtosubmitthesamebeforetheduedate.
d) Acopyofthevaluedassignmentswillbereturnedtothecandidatesalongwiththemarks/gradesandthewrittencomments,whichserveasalearningexerciseforthecandidates.
f) Twopercent(2%)oftheevaluatedAssignmentsbytheAcademicCounselorswillbereviewedbytheUniversityfromtimetotime.
Practical Training: Considerable importance is given to hands-on training on computers in thisProgramme.A set of practical exercise for subjectswhichneed laboratorywork is available at theStudyCentresasalsoonthewebsite.CandidateneedstodothispracticalexerciseundertheguidanceoftheirStudyCentrefaculty.MajorpartofthecontacthoursattheStudyCentreswillbedevotedtothislaboratorywork.

Theory PapersThepatternofquestionpaper forallUniversityTheoryExaminationswillconsistof twoparts.Part-1willbecompulsorywithobjectives/shortquestiontypefor25marks.Part-llwillhavechoiceandwillbefor50marks.Thetotalwillbefor75marks.Practical ExaminationsRegarding Practical Examination, the examination will include questions on all practical of that Semesterand candidate has to do a questionwhich comes to himby lot. Thequestionmaybe fromoneormoresubjectsofpracticalconductedduring theSemester.Thequestionpaperwillbesetby theUniversityandsenttotheExaminationCentres.TheUniversitywillalsodeputeExternalExaminerstoExaminationCentresforconductingpractical.Dependingonthestrengthofthecandidates,StudyCentresmaybeclubbedandPracticalExaminationswillbeheldatselectedStudyCentres.
